Devin McCourty has wild draft plan Patriots fans could get behind

Devin McCourty explains what he would do if he chose the Patriots’ first three draft picks

Former New England Patriots safety and current NFL analyst Devin McCourty has an NFL draft scenario that will probably excite fans. Here’s a hint: the scenario deals exclusively with the offensive side of the football.

The Patriots certainly need upgrades on offense, starting with the quarterback position. The organization attended both pro days for LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye last week. They have also met with other quarterbacks throughout the pre-draft process.

But quarterback is not the only position that needs upgrades on offense.

The Patriots could also use an explosive playmaking wide receiver to help build the offense around the quarterback. Just recently, they met with UNC wide receiver Devontez Walker, while at the Tar Heels pro day.

McCourty spoke at the organization’s pre-draft event for season-ticket holders and very clearly laid out how he would handle the draft, as transcribed by ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

“As much as I love defense, I would love to see first round/offense, second round/offense, third round/offense. Just keep it rolling and go get offensive guys! That’s where it’s needed the most,” said McCourty.

This would certainly be a way to reignite a unit that has been dismal over the past two seasons. Although it’s probably not the way the draft is going to go, this would be a plan that many fans could get behind.

Jason McCourty jokes on brother while discussing Patriots’ draft plans

Jason McCourty turned the Patriots’ draft situation into a hilarious joke on his brother Devin

Former New England Patriots corner and current NFL Network analyst Jason McCourty had a hilarious take on what the organization should do with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

The consensus by many is that the team should draft a quarterback, as the team prepares to build for the future. Others have suggested a playmaking wide receiver, such as Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr.

Whatever the case may be, when appearing on “Good Morning Football” on Wednesday, McCourty joked about what the team should stay away from, while ribbing his brother, Devin McCourty, in the process.

The 2024 NFL draft is set to take place in a little less than a month. New England will need to make sure they hit on this entire draft, especially after failing to address several holes in free agency.

Rodney Harrison took issue with portrayal of Bill Belichick in new Patriots docuseries

Rodney Harrison was not a fan of how “The Dynasty: New England Patriots” treated Bill Belichick

Former New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison was not pleased with how much was left out of “The Dynasty: New England Patriots,” which is the docuseries that is making quite a wave on Apple TV+.

He sat down for an interview with fellow safety Devin McCourty, who was also not pleased with the documentary in his own right.

“It didn’t tell the stories of like me coming and Corey Dillon,” Harrison told McCourty, per a video via Pro Football Talk. “I interviewed for five or six hours when I was in New York, and all they had me saying was, ‘(Expletive) them all. (Expletive) them all.’ That’s it.”

Harrison, who is a Patriots Hall of Famer, signed with the team as a free agent back in 2003 and ended up spending six seasons with the organization. He tallied 446 combined tackles during his run in New England and was a part of three Super Bowl-winning teams.

However, judging by the docuseries, you would not have known how Harrison even came to New England. He told McCourty that him coming to New England was left out of the documentary.

Harrison also stood up for coach Bill Belichick. Many are claiming the docuseries is one-sided, and Harrison’s statements certainly added credence to that feeling.

“He gives guys who are the underdog an opportunity. No one talks about that,” Harrison said. “When everybody else is done with a guy, he brings in a Corey Dillion, he brings in a Randy Moss, he brings in a Rodney Harrison. And I just don’t think he got enough credit, enough respect, enough props. This dude is the greatest coach of all-time.”

The docuseries has been creating a bit of a stir ever since its debut. Even those connected with that timeframe do not approve of it.  At the very least, it has made for compelling television and an even greater conversation.

Devin McCourty feels ‘kinda duped’ by new ‘Dynasty’ docuseries

Devin McCourty admitted he felt “duped” by all of the negativity in the new docuseries “The Dynasty: New England Patriots”

Devin McCourty did not have a rave review of “The Dynasty: New England Patriots” docuseries on Apple TV+. The former New England Patriots safety opened up about his feelings toward the documentary.

“I felt like I got kinda duped,” McCourty said in an interview with former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, via Pro Football Talk. “I was like, ‘Man, this is gonna be great. Like the storytelling, we’re talking about this and we’re talking about that.’ Everything that we all gave to the 20 years that it encompassed, it only hit anything that was negative.”

The Rutgers product had a big hand in several of the Patriots’ best seasons. He was a three-time Super Bowl champion that helped the organization fully cement itself among the best in NFL history. He was there for most of it and was ultimately named a member of the Patriots All-Dynasty Team.

It’s no secret that everything wasn’t perfect behind closed doors for the Patriots throughout their dynasty run, but McCourty still feels like the docuseries left a lot of the key positive details out.

If anything, it’s a good reminder that things may not always be what they seem.

Devin McCourty recognizes Chiefs’ push for next great dynasty

Devin McCourty believes the Kansas City Chiefs will go all in to try to surpass the Patriots’ dynasty

Former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty believes the Kansas City Chiefs have a real chance at asserting dominance in the NFL the way the Patriots did over the years.

Kansas City is fresh off their third Super Bowl victory in five years, and they are showing no signs of slowing down. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is already being thrusted into the conversation as one of the all-time greats, even though he feels he isn’t ready to be compared to Tom Brady.

McCourty knows a thing or two about winning Super Bowls. He was part of three Super Bowl-winning teams with the Patriots.

McCourty appeared on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Wednesday and put into perspective what the Chiefs are doing.

“Travis Kelce will be hanging on as long as possible to play,” McCourty said. “I think the Hunt family will be pouring in whatever amount of money that [general manager Brett] Veach and [coach Andy] Reid think they need. Like, why wouldn’t you? You’re this close and you have, like, we keep seeing all of these graphics where they keep putting Mahomes and Brady after his first seven years or six years—whatever it is, or at the age of this.

“They understand we have somebody who is very rare and as awesome as Brady was. We’re one year removed from him playing football, and we’re already talking about a guy that could possibly catch him. I think Kansas City will pour every single resource into not just trying to catch the Patriots or be even, [but] to, like, set something that will never be caught.”

There have been tons of debates as to whether or not Mahomes is ready to surpass Brady. Fans are even debating on whether Travis Kelce or Rob Gronkowski is the greatest tight end of all time.

One thing that isn’t a debate, however, is that the Chiefs are the next great dynasty.

Kendrick Bourne on Mac Jones, void left by Devin McCourty’s departure and more

Patriots WR Kendrick Bourne spoke about Mac Jones’ tough season in New England, the void left by Devin McCourty and more

On a Radio Row jam-packed with legendary NFL players, both past and present, Kendrick Bourne also garnered some of the spotlight with candid and insightful comments about the Patriots, the team he has competed for since 2021

The 28-year-old, who also played four seasons with the 49ers, sat down with USA TODAY’s Christian D’Andrea to speak about all things New England Patriots.

Bourne, a pending free agent who is currently rehabbing and progressing “ahead of schedule,” agreed with D’Andrea when asked if Mac Jones was “done dirty.”

“I think it was just more the environment for him and not gelling with the OC or the head coach,” said Bourne.

Still, Bourne thinks Jones will remain a Patriot – maybe as a backup if New England drafts a QB, or even as a starter.

“I think he’s too valuable (to lose),” said Bourne.

Bourne made sure to leave no doubt that he remains a member of “Team Mac, for sure.”

Within their conversation, the receiver who has 21 career receiving TDs, also spoke about the huge void left by the departure of Devin McCourty, where he sees Bill Belichick in 2025, and his thoughts on new Pats coach Jerod Mayo, who he anticipates will be a players coach.

Devin McCourty believes change of scenery could be good for Mac Jones

Devin McCourty gave an honest answer when sharing his thoughts on Mac Jones’ future in New England

Former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty has a plan in regards to what the organization should do with quarterback Mac Jones next season.

Jones’ struggles were well-documented last year. The 2021 first-round draft pick finished the year throwing for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Jones’ progression has fluctuated in New England. He had a promising rookie campaign in 2021. The Alabama product threw for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and got selected for the Pro Bowl. He then struggled in 2022 with defensive coach Matt Patricia serving as the offensive coordinator.

New England brought in longtime offensive play-caller Bill O’Brien in hopes that there would be improvement offensively, but Jones continued to struggle.

Multiple former members of the Patriots organization have weighed in on the quarterback’s future in New England. McCourty spoke on the “Eye on Foxborough” podcast earlier this week, and he believes a change of scenery would do Jones some good.

“Right now, without having that offensive coordinator, if you’re asking my opinion, I’d move on from Mac, start from scratch,” said McCourty, as transcribed by MassLive.com’s Karen Guregian. “I think it would help him to be elsewhere … So I think if the opportunity comes to trade him, I think it will help both sides.”

A reset for both Jones and the Patriots wouldn’t necessarily be the worst thing in the world. Whatever decision is ultimately made could be riding on what New England does with the third overall selection in the 2024 NFL draft.

Devin McCourty made strong case for Bill Belichick as Cowboys coach

Devin McCourty believes the Cowboys should pursue Bill Belichick

The Dallas Cowboys lost to the Green Bay Packers by a 48-32 margin on Sunday afternoon. This included trailing in the game at one point by a 27-7 score.

Several NFL personalities chimed in, including former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty, who believes Bill Belichick would have had the Cowboys more prepared if he coached the team.

The loss ended what was a 12-6 season for Dallas. It was also the second loss in a wild card playoff game in three years for the organization. Decisions are going to have to be made, as talented Cowboys teams continue to fall short.

McCourty implored for the organization to make Belichick the next head coach, as transcribed by WEEI’s Mike Kadlick.

“If Bill Belichick is the guy that comes in there, this team will never show up for a playoff game like that,” said McCourty. “That’s one thing I promise you. …If they have the opportunity to get Coach Belichick in there, you don’t turn that down.”

It will be interesting to see what the Cowboys do and where Belichick lands with both parties clearly needing a fresh start.

Matthew Slater reached out to Patriots legends, including Tom Brady, for post-career advice

Matthew Slater has reached out to multiple Patriots legends, including Tom Brady, for advice on life after football

New England Patriots long-time special teams ace and captain Matthew Slater has spent time calling and getting advice from former Patriots players on his future after football.

Retirement isn’t a certainty, but there’s a chance Slater could be playing in the final game of his career on Sunday.

So he is reaching out to former teammates, like Devin McCourty, Jerod Mayo and even former legendary quarterback Tom Brady for advice. When speaking with the media, Slater offered a little insight into some of his conversations, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Zack Cox.

“I’ve spoken with all those guys about crossing over, so to speak, and what that experience was like for them,” Slater said. “I think all three of them were in pretty unique positions. Tom probably feels like he can still play to this day. Jerod obviously had his injuries, and then Devin made his decision last year. But it’s been helpful. It’s been helpful to talk to those guys about their experience, take their feedback.”

Slater began his career with the Patriots in 2008 and has served as a cornerstone of the special teams unit ever since. He’s been named to 10 Pro Bowls, as well as the Patriots’ All-Dynasty team.

In addition to those accolades, he was also a big part of three Patriots Super Bowls.

The good news for Patriots fans is Slater has at least one more game to play this Sunday against the New York Jets. One has to wonder if this will be the final time we see him on a football field.

Devin McCourty admits Patriots more at fault for Mac Jones’ struggles

Devin McCourty put the onus on the Patriots for Mac Jones’ shaky development.

Devin McCourty has a deep love and appreciation for the New England Patriots organization, but he’s also fair in his critique of the team, particularly on the unfolding situation involving quarterback Mac Jones.

The former legendary Patriots safety was asked who was more at fault for Jones’ struggles under center. While some have been quick to put the blame on the player, McCourty took a different route and put the onus back on the organization.

“I mean, to me it’s a no brainer,” said McCourty, when appearing on “The Greg Hill Show,” via WEEI’s Mike Kadlick. “Everybody in the organization’s raved about the guy’s work ethic. How he’s there early, he’s there late. So, to me, it’s hard to just say, like, it’s his fault… I don’t think, no matter how you feel about him, I don’t think you’d walk away from the situation and say, ‘Hey, you know, this situation that they built around him was really good, and he just didn’t get the job done.’ Like, to me, there’s no way, if you’re gonna be factual, you gotta look, there’s just no way.

“But I think. overall, if you say, ‘Hey, which side do you see more at fault?’ To me it’s no doubt the organization, what’s been put around him, for these straight three years.”

McCourty pointed to great examples of the Patriots failing Jones, including the fact that Jones has had three different offensive coordinators in the last three years, letting Jakobi Meyers walk in free agency and severely limiting Kendrick Bourne’s snaps last season.

The Patriots failed to develop Jones into the quarterback they needed him to be. There have also been issues on the offensive line, which has led to both Jones and backup Bailey Zappe being sack lunches this season.

Zappe was sacked five times in the 6-0 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Not even Patrick Mahomes could succeed with the ongoing issues in New England right now.

Jones never stood a chance.
