Here’s how much Chiefs DE Charles Omenihu can earn in incentives in 2023

A quick breakdown on the money that #Chiefs DE Charles Omenihu can earn via incentives during the 2023 NFL season.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

Back in March, the Kansas City Chiefs added former San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Charles Omenihu on a two-year deal worth up to $20 million. We later learned that the “up to” in his contract included $4 million in incentives, leaving him with a two-year contract worth $16 million at its base value.

The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov recently did a deep dive into the money that players around the NFL can earn via incentives in the 2023 NFL season. Omenihu’s package of incentives in 2023 and 2024 both include the following structure with up to $2 million in total incentives each year.

  • If Omenihu plays 65% of the defensive snaps in 2023, he’ll receive $500K in incentives.
  • If Omenihu plays 65% of the defensive snaps in 2023 AND the team reaches the playoffs, he’ll receive $1M in incentives.
  • If Omenihu plays 65% of the defensive snaps in 2023 AND the team reaches the AFC Championship Game, he’ll receive $1.5M in incentives.
  • If Omenihu plays 65% of the defensive snaps in 2023 AND the team wins the Super Bowl, he’ll receive $2M in incentives.

The playoff-related incentives are a good bet given the team’s recent history. Omenihu is certainly confident in his ability to carve out a large role on defense in Kansas City. Last season, Chris Jones was the only defensive lineman for the Chiefs to play more than 65% of the team’s defensive snaps (just under 80%). Omenihu has never played more than 54% of a team’s defensive snaps in a given season in the NFL.

Actual players will be allowed in ‘EA Sports College Football’

Will this influence your decision to buy the game?

When EA Sports announced that college football would be returning to its lineup, former enthusiasts rejoiced. Now, thanks to the advent of NIL, the rechristened “EA Sports College Football” will be even better. That’s because EA Sports has confirmed to ESPN that actual Football Bowl Subdivision players who opt in will be featured in the game. Those players will be compensated.

It is not yet known whether Notre Dame will agree to be included in the game, which is slated for release in 2024, but it appears a major hurdle for that scenario has been cleared. When EA Sports made the fateful return announcement in 2021, the university was among a handful of schools that said it wouldn’t participate in the new game unless NIL compensation could be agreed upon. Northwestern and Tulsa opted in after this latest announcement, so it appears to be only a matter of time before the Irish domino falls.

3 players the Saints should sign to contract extensions before training camp

Cameron Jordan and Cesar Ruiz are among the players the Saints should sign to contract extensions before training camp, via @DillySanders:

The NFL training camp begins in July for the New Orleans Saints and the rest of the league. One of the main focuses up until that point will be ironing out some important contract extensions for players in the last year of their deals.

The Saints currently have 26 players on their roster that will have expiring deals next year. The mission will be figuring out who the most important players will be, in terms of securing their spots for the future and what price point you want to have these players at.

Here are the three most important players that the Saints need to prioritize:

A couple more Notre Dame offers went out today, find out who was offered

The Irish staff has been busy

Once again I feel like a broken record, [autotag]Notre Dame Football[/autotag] offered another prospect. Actually they offered two others aside from Texas linebacker Justin Williams who we reported about earlier today.

There is so much positive energy surrounding the program and recruiting, it’s starting to get infectious.Head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] has everything moving in the right direction and it’s showing with recruits.

A lot of the offers going out right now aren’t just ones where the Irish don’t have a chance with the recruit, they have legit interest between both parties. Find out below which two other players were offered scholarships to play their football in South Bend.

Chiefs projected to receive two compensatory picks in 2024 NFL draft so far

The #Chiefs have done an alright job navigating this offseason as it relates to 2024 compensatory picks.

The Kansas City Chiefs have done an alright job navigating the 2023 free agency period as it relates to compensatory draft picks for 2024.

According to Over The Cap’s Nick Korte, the Chiefs are projected to receive two fifth-round compensatory picks in the 2024 NFL draft as a result of their free agents gained and lost. Kansas City has lost six qualifying compensatory free agents: Orlando Brown Jr. ($16M), Andrew Wylie ($8M), JuJu Smith-Schuster ($8.5M), Juan Thornhill ($7M), Mecole Hardman ($4.5M) and Khalen Saunders ($4.1M). Meanwhile, the team has gained four qualifying compensatory free agents: Jawaan Taylor ($20M), Charles Omenihu ($8M), Drue Tranquill ($3M), and Mike Edwards ($3M).

Contracts for Brown Jr., Wylie, Hardman and Saunders cancel out the contracts for Taylor, Omenihu, Tranquil and Edwards in the compensatory pick formula, leaving Kansas City with two projected fifth-round picks for the departures of Smith-Schuster and Thornhill.

The Chiefs signed DT Byron Cowart, but his contract is not worth enough to cancel out any of the qualifying free agents lost. The inverse goes for the Denver Broncos’ deal with FB Michael Burton and the Dallas Cowboys’ deal with RB Ronald Jones. That could certainly change depending on their performance and playtime in the 2023 NFL season. That previously happened with Damien Wilson, for instance. He signed a non-compensable contract in 2021, but he played enough for the Panthers to earn Kansas City a comp pick.

Kansas City could be due for more compensatory picks in 2024 as they still have several free agents available who could sign with other teams after the draft. Guys like Carlos Dunlap, Justin Watson and Jerick McKinnon still remain free agents. If those players are signed to qualifying contracts before May 2, they’ll be eligible to earn the team another comp pick. Conversely, if the Chiefs sign any players to qualifying contracts before May 2, they could eliminate one of the two compensatory picks they’re currently projected to receive.

2024 college football recruiting team rankings as of March 24, 2023

Notre Dame gets passed by a couple of rivals (they rarely play these days) and USC falls out of the top 50. See it all here…

As the dead period for college football recruiting ends, we thought it’d be a great time to do another check-in where teams rank nine months before the early signing period opens.

Being really high in the rankings right now doesn’t guarantee a high finish, but it certainly goes a long way toward preventing a brutal end in the rankings.

The same goes for those with a slow start. Just because USC isn’t ranked in the top 50 right now doesn’t mean it will not get commitments from a couple of highly regarded talents and soar up the rankings. Will it be able to get enough to get back into the top 10 like last year? Time will undoubtedly tell.

Notre Dame checked in at second place when we checked the rankings out a month ago, but have had no new commitments since. Not surprisingly, it fell a few spots.

The Irish are hosting their pro day Friday and have a big on-campus recruiting weekend they hope will help result in a few more commitments before too long.

We’ll continue to do this on at least a monthly basis throughout the non-game months and check in on how the team rankings are shaping up.  As of March 24, 2023, here are the top 50 team recruiting rankings on the 247Sports composite.

Jordan Love’s fifth-year option worth $20.27 million in 2024

The fifth-year option for QB Jordan Love would cost the Packers a little over $20 million during the 2024 season. The team must make that decision this offseason.

The Green Bay Packers have a big decision to make this offseason in regards to whether or not they will pick up Jordan Love’s fifth-year option, which will come with a salary of $20.272 million for the 2024 season.

Every draft pick receives an initial four-year contract, but first-round selections also have a fifth-year option for the team to either pick up or decline. This decision has to be made prior to the player’s fourth NFL season, and if picked up, guarantees their contract in that fifth season.

The value of that guaranteed contract is based upon the position played along with some performance benchmarks that can increase the contract value.

The potential difficulty in this decision for the Packers is obvious in that this is a hefty price to guarantee for Love, who has very little NFL experience. However, despite the lack of meaningful playing time, the Packers have seen him on the practice field, in the locker room, and in the film room for three seasons, which, as Brian Gutekunst told reporters during the 2022 season, gives him the confidence to make a decision.

“We’re really pleased with his progression and what he’s been able to do,” Gutekunst told reporters. “I think it would be really good for him, the growth you need to go through, seeing things for the first time, making those mistakes you need to make, but I think from our end of it, we’ve seen what we need to see.”

Although it’s a small sample size, Love appeared to take a big step forward in his development this past season, which many saw against Philadelphia. He was confident, his footwork looked much improved, and he was decisive in his decision-making, which led to timely and accurate passes.

He is now in a position to potentially be the Packers starting quarterback in 2023, depending on what happens with Aaron Rodgers. While Rodgers is still yet to make his decision official, the reports of a trade taking place have been rampant, and one would think that if true, and the Packers are willing to engage in those discussions, they feel comfortable with Love taking over. Whereas on the flip side, if they still have doubts, I imagine they will be fighting hard to keep Rodgers around in 2023.

If we want to go down the rabbit hole of what happens on the off chance that Rodgers is a Packer in 2023, Green Bay should then trade Love, and the fifth-year option discussion becomes a moot point. But if they want to keep Love around for the 2024 season, picking up his fifth-year option in this scenario feels like the likely outcome as a way to keep Love under contract in 2024, not knowing Rodgers’ future, but also as a sign of good faith. There have been reports out there that Love could demand a trade if Rodgers is back for the 2023 season.

Since the fifth-year option is a one-year deal, all $20.272 million have to be recognized on the 2024 salary cap if picked up. The easiest way around this would be to extend Love next offseason, which would lower his cap hit that season, but of course, that is dependent upon how well he will play in 2023.

Green Bay has to make their official decision on Love’s option by the week after the draft. If I were to guess right now, I’d venture to say that they pick it up. If Love plays well in 2023, they can then extend him in 2024 and lower the cap hit, as already mentioned. If he struggles and they need to look for a new quarterback in the draft next offseason, in the grand scheme of quarterback contracts, $20.272 million is on the light side, and with it only being a one-year deal, it shouldn’t impact how they go about their offseason too drastically.

Auburn basketball to play in 2024 Maui Invitational

The Tigers last played in the tournament in 2018.

The Auburn Tigers are headed back to the Aloha State in 2024.

College basketball reporter Jon Rothstein reported on Twitter Friday that the Auburn Tigers will fill out the final spot in 2024’s Maui Jim Maui Invitational next season. Auburn last played in the tournament in 2018, its only appearance thus far. This year’s iteration of the tournament, which will see Tennessee represent the Southeastern Conference, will take place in November.

The Tigers will face off against North Carolina, UConn, Michigan State, Memphis, Iowa State, Colorado and Dayton in the tournament. An SEC team has not played in the final of the tournament since 2015 and an SEC team has not won the Maui Invitational since 1993 when Kentucky beat Arizona in a close 93-92 contest. Arizona won last year’s tournament by beating Creighton 81-79.

Auburn’s only year participating in the tournament saw it winning its first game against Xavier and then losing to Duke in the second round. The Tigers finished in third place after beating Arizona.

Is USC’s Caleb Williams a lock to go No. 1 in the 2024 NFL draft?

Is there a single person in America who thinks Caleb Williams *won’t* be the top pick in the 2024 NFL draft?

Caleb Williams, the USC Trojans’ signal caller and 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, was the star of the Cotton Bowl versus Tulane, with 462 passing yards and five touchdowns, the most in Cotton Bowl history.

Even though he and USC’s offense had 594 yards against the Green Wave, they came up short due to a late rally from their opponent in the final 4:30 of the game. Tulane scored 16 points on two touchdowns and a safety to pull off a 46-45 win over the Men of Troy.

Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams had an incredible performance in year one, Williams set the USC single-season record for passing touchdowns (42) and passing yards (4,537). Yet, a lot of those feats were overshadowed by Alex Grinch’s defense.

This next item doesn’t have anything to do with Grinch or the defense: Caleb Williams’ draft stock has never been higher.

What is next for the projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft?

Is Caleb Williams already a lock to go No. 1 in the 2024 NFL draft?

This year, the quarterback class is extremely talented. With studs such as C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young,  Will Levis and many others, teams with mediocre field generals are scrambling to find ways to get their hands on these top talents.

However, some teams may have already made the decision to pass on picking a QB in this draft. They would rather wait one more year until the 2024 draft comes around to be able to get their hands on Caleb Williams.

Lincoln Riley has already coached Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, who went first overall, and Jalen Hurts, who is an NFL MVP candidate for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Will Williams be next in line? Only time will tell.

Is Caleb Williams already a lock to go No. 1 in the 2024 NFL draft?

Williams’ combination of physical and mental traits is hard to come by and makes him a fairly easy evaluation.

A lot can happen in the next 18 months, but a strong finish to his 2022 season could give Caleb Williams a comfortable lead over the rest of the 2024 QB class which includes North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman, Texas’ Quinn Ewers, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, and Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss.

Tennessee 2024 athlete has Ohio State in his top 5

The Buckeyes made up a lot of ground in the last few months #GoBucks

The Buckeyes missed on a scholarship running back during the 2023 recruiting cycle though they took a preferred walk-on, [autotag]Willtrell Hartson[/autotag]).

They have not yet focused their efforts on the 2024 class of prospects either. As an example, when Tennessee’s [autotag]Boo Carter[/autotag] announced his initial top list of 12 schools in October, [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] was nowhere to be found.

Fast forward about two months and [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] has made a positive enough impression on Carter to be included in his top five along with Oregon, Colorado, Michigan and home state Tennessee. It’s a very good development for Day and running backs coach [autotag]Tony Alford[/autotag]. The need to add another quality back in the next cycle is very important.

What’s interesting about Carter is there is potential for him to play on the defensive side of the ball if playing on offense doesn’t work out. In short, he’s a football player we would love to see suit up in scarlet and gray at the next level.
