2023 Women’s World Cup: Portugal vs. Vietnam odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Portugal vs. Vietnam odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

In a Group E matchup, Portugal (0-0-1 / W-D-L) and Vietnam (0-0-1) meet Thursday in the 2023 Women’s World Cup at FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Portugal vs. Vietnam odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Portugal suffered a 1-0 defeat in the opening match against Netherland, while the Dutch outshot it 12-3. Midfielder Fatima Pinto, not to be confused with the singer of the same name, managed just 1 shot in the opening contest.

Vietnam was held without a shot against the USWNT, falling 3-0 in the opening match. It’s not much of a shock, as Vietnam was outscored 20-3 during matches in 2022 against teams in this year’s World Cup, while getting outscored 18-2 in 2023 in matches leading up to the tournament by fellow World Cup opponents.

  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: -150 | U: +110)

Portugal vs. Vietnam picks and predictions

Prediction

Portugal 2, Vietnam 0

Moneyline (ML)

Portugal (-750) should be able to get off to a quick start against the Group E doormat, Vietnam (+2000). However, laying 7 1/2 times your potential return is just not a solid investment for a standalone wager, or even as part of a multi-team parlay. Including Portugal sucks the value right out of your ticket.

PASS, and instead, and if you’re a bit of a conservative bettor, consider PORTUGAL TO WIN TO NIL (-250), although that’s still a little on the expensive side. I like taking the “multiple correct score” prop with PORTUGAL 1:0, 2:0 OR 3:0 (-110) at near even-money.

Over/Under (O/U)

I would take a chance on UNDER 2.5 GOALS (+110) at plus-money. Vietnam did a pretty decent job shutting down the USWNT in the opening match. It was 1-0 until stoppage time in the 1st half, and 2-0 until Lindsey Horan tacked on a late goal at 77′. I think Vietnam is able to keep Portugal to just 2 markers, while Vietnam fails to score again with its toothless offensive attack.

2023 Women’s World Cup: Australia vs. Nigeria odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Australia vs. Nigeria odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Australia (1 win, 0 draws, 0 losses) battles Nigeria (0-1-0) in the 2nd match for each Group B side. Kickoff Thursday from Suncorp Stadium is set for 6 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Australia vs. Nigeria odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Australia, without arguably the best player in the tournament, F Sam Kerr (calf injury), beat Ireland 1-0 Thursday. It had 4 more shots and 1 more shot on target. The winning goal was a 52nd-minute penalty kick by D Stephanie Catley. Australia did control most of the match, holding possession for 63%. It sits 10th in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.

Nigeria, which ranks 40th and is the lowest-ranked Group B side, drew Canada 0-0 Thursday despite being significantly outplayed on most fronts. It had 5 fewer shots, 2 fewer shots on goal and possession for a mere 33% of the match. Nigeria will also be without starting M Deborah Abiodun, who received a red card in the 98th minute of the opener.

  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: +110 | U: -155)

Australia vs. Nigeria picks and predictions

Prediction

Australia 2, Nigeria 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

There’s not a lot of value here either way. Australia is a deeper and more talented side. Even without Kerr, it was able to win almost every facquet of the game against Ireland. Expect a similar match. With Nigeria down Abiodun, its midfield may take a hit, and even a draw isn’t worth the high payout.

If you are looking to play Australia, the better plan would be BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE – NO (-190). Nigeria struggled heavily to get through on Canada and may again find it difficult against an Australian side that will be both at home and allowed just 1 shot on got versus Ireland.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (-155).

Without Kerr, Australia’s offense should be able to produce, but asking it to score multiple times after it only netted a goal via a penalty kick in its opener is too much.

Similarly, its defense held firm, and Nigeria’s offense was nowhere to be found in its first match. Its defense didn’t have a one-off game. It has held its opponent to 1 or 0 goals in 5 of its last 6 matches.

Expect a strong showing from both defenses, just as they did in the 1st matchday. Take UNDER 2.5 (-155).

2023 Women’s World Cup: USA vs. Netherlands odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s USA vs. Netherlands odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

USA (1 win, 0 losses, 0 draws) battles Netherlands (1-0-0) in the 2nd match for each Group E nation. Kickoff from Wellington Regional Stadium is set for 9 p.m. ET Wednesday (FOX).  Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the USA vs. Netherlands odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

The USWNT, the favorite to win the World Cup, won its 1st match against Vietnam 3-0 with 28 shots and 7 on target. Vietnam didn’t have a single shot. However, USA didn’t cover the 5.5-goal spread and wasn’t able to dominate as expected. USA is No. 1 in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.

No. 9 Netherlands should pose a far greater challenge. It beat Portugal 1-0 Sunday via a 13th-minute goal from D Stefanie van der Gragt. Netherlands had 12 shot and 5 on target; Portugal had 2 shots and 1 on target. The Dutch are led by 30-year-old F Lieke Martens, who had 145 caps and 59 goals as of July 2.

  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: +120 | U: -165)

USA vs. Netherlands picks and predictions

Prediction

USA 3, Netherlands 0

Moneyline (ML)

BET USA (-140).

While USA didn’t show it often in its opener, the skill is still there, and the defense held Vietnam to zero shots on target, which is impressive regardless of the opponent. The USA had many players making their World Cup debut as well, so nerves were likely high.

It also dominated possession, which the Netherlands didn’t do in its 1st game. Portugal has 44% of the game’s possession. Germany is the only top-5 team the Netherlands have played this year, and it lost 1-0 on April 7 at home.

Considering those struggles against top-tier sides and the USA’s dominance, take USA (-140) despite the juice.

Over/Under (O/U)

LEAN OVER 2.5 (+120).

The Netherlands has a competent attack. It played 5 friendlies prior to the World Cup, and it scored at least 4 goals in 3 of them. It went north of this total in 4 of its 6 games this year. It did manage 12 shots against Portugal and may be able to test a young USA defense.

The USA has several big-name forwards like F Alex Morgan and F Sophia Smith. While it didn’t break through as often as expected against Vietnam, it did have 28 shots and should be able to convert more often if given those opportunities again.

Put both elite attacks together and back OVER 2.5 (+120).

2023 Women’s World Cup: Spain vs. Zambia odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Spain vs. Zambia odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Spain (1-0-0 / W-D-L) takes on Zambia (0-0-1) Wednesday as Group C play continues. Kickoff from Eden Park is at 3:30 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Spain vs. Zambia odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

The results in the opening games for both these teams were not surprising. Zambia was +775 to beat Japan and lost 5-0. Spain was -10000 against Costa Rica and won 3-0. But sometimes it’s how you play that matters.

Zambia made its World Cup debut against Japan Saturday and was overpowered by the 2015 runner-up. It wasn’t immediate though as Japan only led 1-0 at halftime on a goal from M Hinata Miyazawa in the 43rd minute.

Japan’s defense prevented the African nation from any offensive success. Zambia failed to take a shot on goal, or any shot close to the goal, even with its lone corner kick.

Spain’s 3-0 win against Costa Rica, while impressive, was still much lower than what its stats show. Spain took 22 corner kicks and 46 shots against Costa Rica (12 on goal). It held the ball 80% of the time, while Costa Rica failed to take a single shot on goal.

Despite all that, Spain only scored twice, on goals by M Aitana Bonmati and F Esther Gonzalez — 1 of Spain’s goals was a Costa Rica own goal.

Spain is No. 6 in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings; Zambia checks in at No. 77.

  • Over/Under: 4.5 (O: -135 | U: -105)

Spain vs. Zambia picks and predictions

Prediction

Spain 5, Zambia 0

Moneyline (ML)

Like its 1st match, Spain (-15000) is heavily favored. The moneyline odds are so high, you have to PASS and look to other options.

From the last game, Spain shook off a lot of its pre-World Cup drama and showed how dominant it can be. But despite the one-sided match with Costa Rica, it took Spain until the 23rd minute to score.

Zambia has problems with its defense, but held Japan scoreless until right before the 1st half ended. So far in this tournament, it’s taking teams a fair amount of time to score. Of the 1st 32 goals scored, only 8 have come before the 45-minute mark. Teams are averaging 42 minutes per goal.

BET DRAW AT 30 MINUTES (+195).

Over/Under (O/U)

Only 2 of the 1st 12 matches played have gone Over 4 goals, but there are a few reasons to like the Over here. First, Zambia’s loss to Japan was 1 of those Over results. Second, Zambian GK Catherine Musonda was given a red card late in that game, disqualifying her from playing against Spain.

Zambia won’t be playing their 2nd-stringer because Musonda was the backup. Hazel Nali was the starter, but had to bow out days before the World Cup began with a knee injury. If the backup allowed 5 goals it may be impossible to keep this game close. Spain had 12 shots on goal in the 1st game.

BET OVER 4.5 (-135).

2023 Women’s World Cup: Japan vs. Costa Rica odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Japan vs. Costa Rica odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

In a Group C matchup, Japan (1-0-0 / W-D-L) and Costa Rica (0-0-1) meet Wednesday in the 2023 Women’s World Cup at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Japan vs. Costa Rica odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Japan rolled to a 5-0 victory against Zambia in the team’s opening match, as Hinata Miyazawa hit the back of the net twice, while Jun Endo, Mina Tanaka and Riko Ueki each contributed goals.

Costa Rica was on the short end of a 3-0 score against group favorite Spain. CRC had a difficult time in the possession game, with Spain winning the battle 80% to 20%, and Spain had 22 corner kicks to just 1. In addition, Costa Rica failed to get a shot on goal, while Spain racked up 12.

  • Over/Under: 3.5 (O: +130 | U: -185)

Japan vs. Costa Rica picks and predictions

Prediction

Japan 3, Costa Rica 0

Moneyline (ML)

Japan (-1200) will cost 12 times the potential return. That’s way too much risk for not nearly enough reward. A Costa Rica (+2800) victory would pay 28 to 1, but Costa Rica has very little shot at winning outright, PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

As long as Japan doesn’t go ballistic on the offensive end, playing the “multiple correct score” prop with JAPAN 1:0, 2:0 OR 3:0 (-105) is the way to go.

As far as the total, playing UNDER 3.5 GOALS (-185) is a solid play, based on the wager above. The -185 is more juice than I usually prefer, but I’m willing to risk it here.

In addition, take a look at the “half with most goals” prop, and consider the 2ND HALF (-105) as the winning play.

2023 Women’s World Cup: Canada vs. Ireland odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Canada vs. Ireland odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Canada (0 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses) battles Ireland (0-0-1) Wednesday in each nation’s 2nd 2023 Women’s World Cup group stage match. Kickoff from Perth Rectangular Stadium in Australia is set for 8 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Canada vs. Ireland odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Canada drew Nigeria 0-0 Thursday despite having 68% of the possession, 5 more shots and 2 more shots on target. Canada also 10 less fouls, finishing with 6 to Nigeria’s 16. Canada, No. 7 in the FIFA Women’s Rankings, is led by 40-year-old F Christine Sinclair, who had 323 caps and 190 goals as of April 11 of this year.

Ireland, No. 22 in the FIFA rankings, suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to host Australia to kick off its group stage action. Ireland had 4 fewer shots and 1 fewer shot on target. It had just 37% of the possession. The only goal scored was a penalty, so Ireland’s defense held up well.

  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: +138 | U: -190)

Canada vs. Ireland picks and predictions

Prediction

Canada 1, Ireland 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

I don’t love suggesting anything more than -150, so Canada (-160), despite being the better side, to win outright isn’t worth the risk. Ireland received a break with Australia F Sam Kerr missing the opener. Canada will have its full squad and should push Ireland’s defense to its limit.

Given neither team scored in its first game, the better high-juice wager is both teams to score: no (-100), but I also wouldn’t suggest that given the potential return.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET ALTERNATE UNDER 1.5 (+150).

It’s not just that neither team scored in its opener, it’s that neither team really had many opportunities.

Canada had 3 shots on target despite controlling 68% of the possession. It will likely repeat that ownership of the ball, but there’s no reason to think it can produce against an Ireland side that limited a top-tier Australia

However, Ireland had just 1 shot on target despite having 7 corners in its opener. In a game which it should again lack possession, Ireland likely won’t be able to generate much more offense.

Seven of the first 12 Women’s World Cup games finished Under 1.5 goals. TAKE UNDER 1.5 (+150).

2023 Women’s World Cup: Switzerland vs. Norway odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Switzerland vs. Norway odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Norway (0-0-1 / W-D-L) battles Switzerland (1-0-0) Tuesday in a Group A stage match of the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Kickoff from FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand, is set for 4 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Switzerland vs. Norway odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Norway suffered a stunning 1-0 loss Thursday to kick off the event, falling to New Zealand, which benefited a bit with a home-field advantage. Norway outshot New Zealand 13-12 — both with 2 shots on target — but had 3 times as many fouls (15 to 5). Norway does have one of the best rosters in the world, led by F Ada Hegerberg, winner of the Women’s Ballon d’Or in 2018.

Switzerland opened its Cup action with a 2-0 victory over the Philippines 2-0 Friday. The Swiss had 17 shots and 8 on target, controlling possession 74% of the time. The Philippines had 3 shots and 0 on target. MF Seraina Piubel scored the lone non-penalty goal for the Swiss.

Norway ranks 12th in the FIFA Women’s Rankings; Switzerland is 20th.

  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: +120 | U: -165)

Switzerland vs. Norway picks and predictions

Prediction

Switzerland 1, Norway 1

Moneyline (ML)

SPRINKLE DRAW (+220).

Switzerland exceeded expectations while Norway didn’t in the first matchday for each side.

While Hegerberg is a star, she’s also 28 years old and won the best women’s player award in 2018. If Norway couldn’t get through New Zealand, it doesn’t seem likely it will be able to dominant a top-20 side like the Swiss.

Switzerland’s win over the Philippines was expected, and it matters less than the struggles Norway had. The Norwegians had 1 more shot than New Zealand and as many shots on target.

Those struggles should continue, and for the value, back a close game and a DRAW (+220).

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (-165).

Unders have been hot in the Women’s World Cup. Eight of the first 12 games through Sunday have cashed Under tickets, and several that have gone Over (Japan’s 5-0 win over Zambia and USA’s 3-0 win over Vietnam) were both expected to be high-goal games.

Both the Swiss and Norway went Under 2.5 in their openers, and both struggled to continually produce opportunities. Norway had just 2 shots on goal, while the Swiss had 8. Again, the Swiss had 74% possession and won’t dominate this game like it did against the Philippines — Norway had 50% possession vs. New Zealand.

Tuesday should feature a hard-fought battle, and as Norway proved in its 1st game, those typically have fewer goals. TAKE UNDER 2.5 (-165).

2023 Women’s World Cup: New Zealand vs. Philippines odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s New Zealand vs. Philippines odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

In a Group A matchup, New Zealand (1-0-0 / W-D-L) and Philippines (0-0-1) meet Tuesday in the 2023 Women’s World Cup at Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the New Zealand vs. Philippines odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

New Zealand opened Group A play with its 1st-ever Women’s World Cup victory, toppling heavily-favored Norway by a 1-0 count. F Hannah Wilkinson banged in a goal early in the 2nd half for the difference-maker for the Football Ferns.

New Zealand cashed as the underdog while Under 2.5 goals easily cashed. The Under also cashed in the opening group match for Philippines.

The underdog Philippines was tripped up 2-0 against Switzerland on Friday. It was the 1st-ever World Cup appearance for the Pacific Island nation, 1 of 8 countries making their tournament debuts this year. Philippines dropped a 2-1 international friendly against New Zealand back in September.

New Zealand vs. Philippines picks and predictions

Prediction

New Zealand 2, Philippines 0

Moneyline (ML)

The host nation New Zealand (-275) should be able to pick up its 2nd victory, spurred on by the boisterous home crowd. However, even if it looks like a good bet that the Football Ferns will take down the inexperienced Philippines (+800) side, it’s not wise to risk 2.75 times the potential return.

PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 GOALS (-145) is a solid play, as the Philippines is unlikely to get on the board, and New Zealand will have some difficulty against a decent defense for the underdogs.

In addition, it’s a good idea to play the “multiple correct score” prop, rolling with NEW ZEALAND 1:0, 2:0 OR 3:0 (+115) at plus-money.

In the “result after 30:00 min” prop section, I also like TIE (-140) as it is not priced out of line. We should get a slow build-up to the offense for the Ferns.

2023 Women’s World Cup: Colombia vs. South Korea odds, picks and predictions

In the Group H opener for both nations, Colombia and South Korea meet Monday at Sydney Football Stadium in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Colombia vs. South Korea odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Colombia, runners-up at the Copa America tournament in 2022, kicks off its 3rd-ever World Cup appearance. The team is led by captain Daniela Montoya, while 18-year-old phenom Linda Caicedo will also figure in prominently.

South Korea will be making its 4th-ever World Cup appearance. It reached the final in the Women’s Asian Cup in 2022, but it is looking to make history in this tournament. It has won just 1 previous match in its previous 10 FIFA Women’s World Cup matches. South Korea has also never had a clean sheet in the World Cup, while failing to score a goal in each of the previous 3 opening matches.

  • Over/Under: 1.5 (O: -190 | U: +135)

Colombia vs. South Korea picks and predictions

Prediction

Colombia 1, South Korea 1

Moneyline (ML)

This is a very important opening match for both sides, as neither can afford to squander any points in a group which also includes favorite Germany and  Morocco. Look for both Colombia (+188) and South Korea (+155) to play it rather close to the vest, with a DRAW (+195) the most likely outcome.

Over/Under (O/U)

Over 1.5 goals (-190) is not a recommended play, nor is the alternate line of Under 2.5 goals (-225). Both are just too expensive. I am expecting a total of just 2 goals, and neither play is particularly attractive.

Under the Both Teams To Score and Total Goals section, you’ll find the best value. Play YES AND UNDER 4.5 GOALS (+145), as both sides should find the back of the net, but 5 or more combined goals is very unlikely.

Germany battles Morocco on Monday in the first Women’s World Cup action for both nations. Kickoff in the Group H battle from Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is set for 4:30 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Germany vs. Morocco odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Germany earned a bid for the World Cup by winning Group H in UEFA qualification last September. Since then Germany has played 9 matches, winning 5, losing 3 and drawing 1. It beat USA 2-1 in a friendly on Nov. 10. Germany is led by F Alexandra Popp, who has 128 caps and 62 international goals.

Morocco qualified by being the quarterfinal winner of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. In 2023, it has posted a 2-3-2 record. It does have draws against Italy and Switzerland, both of which are top-20 nations. F Ghizlane Chebbak is the most notable player. She captains the team and has had 61 caps and 21 international goals.

Germany is 2nd in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings and Morocco is 72nd.

Germany vs. Morocco picks and predictions

Germany 4, Morocco 0

PASS.

Germany is the heavy favorite here, and the odds strongly suggest Morocco isn’t going to score either. BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE (-350) isn’t worth backing. Neither is Germany to win outright at (-1000).

Germany has the talent and experience to go all the way in this tournament and truly challenge the top-ranked USA. Morocco is making its Women’s World Cup debut and won’t have the firepower to keep pace against a powerhouse like Germany.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET OVER 3.5 (-185).

Germany has a few of the best players in the world, and it should move along flawlessly. M Lena Oberdorf and Popp were both ranked top-10 players. The talent for Germany in the attack is there, and it should break through consistently.

Germany has poured it on against weaker sides, scoring 8 on Bulgaria in a qualifying match last season. Germany has scored in its last 4 games, one of which was against Brazil and another against the Netherlands.

Morocco hasn’t scored in 5 straight matches, so it may not be much help on the total. It did score 5 goals in its 1st 2 games of 2023, so it may be able to squeeze 1 in at some point.

But, backing a dynamic Germany attack to show its best is worth the wager. Take OVER 3.5 (-185).
