While the pre-tournament favorite, USA had a poor showing in the group stage and qualified with 1 more point than Portugal. It drew Portugal 0-0, drew Netherlands 1-1 and beat Vietnam 3-0. The concerning parts lie in how it has possessed. It had just 44% possession in its draws against Netherlands and Portugal—2 games it was significantly favored in.

Sweden dominated weaker opponents as it should have but it needed a 90th-minute goal to beat South Africa, the other team that qualified from Group G. Sweden has the experience and defensive aptitude to limit the United States, much like the Netherlands did.

Sweden had just 8 shots on frame against it throughout the first 3 matches. It also owned the majority of possession. These teams are as close as it gets, and for this value, back a full-time DRAW (+210).

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. BET BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE – YES (+105).

Both teams have scored in every game outside of USA’s 0-0 draw with Portugal. Even in that game, the USA had 6 shots on frame. I wouldn’t be confident in the teams combining for Over 2.5 goals, but each has strong midfield play and should be able to have ample opportunities in the final 3rd.

The USMNT showed a better-than-expected ability to get into the Serbian back line and get shots, but they struggled to finish. With so many players new to the roster, that should be expected. However, with 20 shots, they should be able to convert more against Colombia. Also, F Jesus Ferreira, who didn’t play Wednesday, should see time.

Colombia will have talent on their roster with Hernandez and talented LAFC F Chicho Arango. Both sides should be able to push forward, and with Colombia sitting 17th in the world rankings, they should present a challenge for the USMNT.

I expect to see some more of the USMNT more talented players like Ferreira, and at this value, a DRAW (+225) is how I’d play the moneyline.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET OVER 2.5 (+115).

The USMNT started D Walker Zimmerman Wednesday, and he is their best defender. They may opt to give D Sam Rogers more time along with potentially seeing M Paxten Aaronson. Players like Aaronson and Ferreira should bring pace while Colombia is going to have its own talented attackers.

Arango had 16 goals in 28 starts last season for LAFC. He can get into the final third with ease, and the combination of Arango and Hernandez could be trouble. Considering the talent that should be on display, back the OVER 2.5 (+115).

The value isn’t necessarily here to make this a full-unit play, but the USMNT is bringing some talented players to take on what should be Serbia’s 2nd-string team. Both countries will feature young, promising talent.

The USMNT will feature some consistent names though, especially in the defensive side with M Kellyn Acosta and D Walker Zimmerman at camp. With several forwards likely getting time and making their first start, especially the highly-anticipated first cap for Zendejas, the forwards could struggle to find much comradery.

Nonetheless, there isn’t much impressive about this Serbian roster, and I’d back the USMNT here to hold them without a goal.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (-122).

Given the turnover from the World Cup rosters for both teams, it doesn’t make much sense to use those performances to justify betting the Under.

At the same time, that helps justify it as the USMNT has 13 players making their 1st cap which could bode poorly for stringing together qualify attacking sets. The drama surrounding the USMNT and management could also bring unneeded distractions to the club.

None of Serbia’s players were on their World Cup roster with 3 MLS players highlighting the roster. The talent won’t be there to consistently get through what should be a strong USMNT defense.

The United States has proven that it can hang with top-tier sides. The Netherlands should eventually win this game, but what USA showed against England should instill confidence in bettors.

USA held England to 3 shots on target and no goals which was an impressive showing as England tallied 9 goals in its other 2 games.

Netherlands also didn’t impress too much. It took down Qatar and Senegal but had 5 fewer shots than Senegal. Ecuador also ranks 44th in the world and drew the Netherlands.

For what each side showed through Group Stage, a DRAW (+240) has good value.

LEAN UNDER 2.5 (-170).

Every game by both teams in the Group Stage went under this total as both teams allowed just 1 goal each across their 3 games.

I wouldn’t hammer the total at this value though, but it is the only way I would play this game though considering the presence of van Djik and Manchester City M Nathan Ake in the back for Netherlands.

Similarly, the wingbacks for USA, AC Milan D Sergino Dest and Fulham D Antonee Robinson, have been extremely solid so far this tournament. With Pulisic banged up, the US attack may not be 100% either.

The USA should go all gas and no breaks, and it has the talent to do so. Players like M Gio Reyna have yet to play more than 45 minutes in a game and should be set to have a high level of involvement.

If the USA can create chances like it did vs. England, it will win Tuesday and move on to the Round of 16.

Iran only scored on Wales because Iran had a man advantage after Wales GK Wayne Hennessey received a red card in the 86th minute and had to be replaced.

USA looked good against the high-level competition of England, while Iran struggled to defend the quick-paced English side. Iran was even out-possessed 62% to 38% against Wales.

USA has the talent to dominate this match, and it should come out on top with everything at stake.

Over/Under (O/U)

LEAN UNDER 2.5 (-170).

I don’t love the value, but it is the better side.

Iran didn’t score in 86 minutes vs. Wales until it had the man advantage thanks to the red card to the Welsh goalkeeper. Against England, Iran didn’t score until the game was far out of contention.

USA scored once on Wales and failed to find the back of the net against England despite getting 10 shots. USA’s finishing hasn’t been there, and it doesn’t appear to have a strong 9 in this tournament.

England had 79% of possession and 5 more shots (4 more shots on target). On a sour note for the England, F Harry Kane injured his ankle vs. Iran. He will be availalbe for the USA match, but the concern is if he will be 100%.

USA had an unsatisfying 1-1 draw with the F Gareth Bale-led Wales. US score 1st, early in the 1st half, but a late bad foul in the box by D Walker Zimmerman led to a penalty kick goal by Bale.

The Americans shockingly did not play M Gio Reyna, who will be 100% healthy and likely to start Friday. USA actually had 2 fewer shots on goal and 1 less shot on target vs. Wales despite having 59% of the possession.

PASS.

There’s no value here. There wasn’t enough value Wednesday afternoon when England was favored at -170, and there’s definitely no value with the line up to -205 Friday before kickoff.

If I had to choose something, it would be the Draw (+350). USA played better than the numbers look against Wales, and England got on a role vs. Iran. What was impressive for the Americans, was their ability to limit quality Welsh chances.

Unlike Iran, USA has speed on the defensive edges in D Sergino Dest and D Antonee Robinson to help tame what England’s Saka and F Raheem Sterling are capable of doing.

It would be nice to profit 6.2 times an initial bet on the USMNT (+620), but I don’t see it happening. Still, if you want to gamble and win on a decent long shot … it would be fun to brag about cashing a USA (+620) ticket.

The unknown regarding Kane’s injury also makes the draw enticing. I would still PASS though with just a slight lean to the Draw (+350).

Over/Under (O/U)

BET OVER 2.5 (-120).

England looked unstoppable against Iran, and while the point still stands for Dest and Robinson, both received a full dose of work against Wales and could have tired legs.

The quality on the England side is difficult to overlook. England had 13 shots and put 7 on target. It controlled possession and looked incredible with its finishing. I expect a similar result.

England did, however, give up 2 goals to Iran, and the USA attack, led by Chelsea F Christian Pulisic, should be even more lethal. If the USMNT can get at least 3 shots on target, expect 1 to be converted.

The pace of this game, especially with the excitement on both ends, should produce goals as well. Each team was over 80% in passing accuracy, so they should be able to breakthrough backlines with that efficiency.
