2023 Women’s World Cup: Japan vs. Norway odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Japan vs. Norway odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Japan battles Norway in the Round of 16 Saturday. Kickoff from Wellington Regional Stadium is set for 4 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Japan vs. Norway odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Japan had arguably 1 of the most impressive group stage showings. It beat Zambia 5-0 on July 22, Costa Rica 2-0 on the 26th and Spain 4-0 on July 31. It did have just 23% possession against Spain but still managed 5 more shots on frame. Japan ended at the top of Group C with 11 goals for and 0 against. Sweden, England and Japan were the lone nations to win all 3 matches.

It sits 11th in the FIFA Women’s Rankings. Norway sits 12th. Norway advanced after finishing 2nd in Group A, which was won by Switzerland. Norway had 6 goals for and 1 against. That 1 against resulted in a 1-0 loss to New Zealand. It drew Switzerland and then advanced on goal differential after demolishing the Philippines 6-0. In its most difficult matchup, a 0-0 draw with Switzerland, it ended with 4 more shots on goal and 51% possession.

  • Moneyline: Japan -120 (bet $120 to win $100) | Norway +350 (bet $100 to win $350) | Draw +240
  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: +125 | U: -175)

Japan vs. Norway picks and predictions

Prediction

Japan 1, Norway 1 (Norway advances in extra time)

Moneyline (ML)

SPRINKLE DRAW (+240).

Japan and Spain played with Costa Rica and Zambia in Group C, which was among the more top-heavy parings. Japan dominated everyone but Spain, and even beat La Roja 4-0.

Japan is skilled, but the concern is how it beat Spainpossessing for a fraction of the match and ending with 3 fewer shots. Norway, even in its draw and loss, had more shots and looked like the better side. That should bode well for it against Japan.

Norway has drawn against France (No. 5 in FIFA rankings) and Sweden (No. 3) this year. It should be able to compete at a high level, and against a favored Japan, a DRAW (+240) is worth a play.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (-175).

Norway’s offense has not performed well. That almost cannot be stated loud enough as it scored 0 goals in its 2 toughest matchups and got through by pounding the Philippines 6-0. Its defense has been terrific though, allowing just 1 goal and minimum shots on goal.

Japan is in a similar boat. It thrashed the teams it should have, and then it clobbered Spain in a game that only mattered for seeding. Japan scored 11 goals through 3 matches and allowed 0. Norway’s defense and pace should help slow the game down and make Japan’s attack less lethal.

The juice is there, and it is borderline unplayable. However, at these odds, I like UNDER 2.5 (-175).

2023 Women’s World Cup: Norway vs. Philippines odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Norway vs. Philippines odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Norway (0 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss) takes on Philippines (1-0-1) Sunday in the final Group A battle for both nations. Kickoff from Eden Park is set for 3 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Norway vs. Philippines odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Norway commenced its World Cup play with a 1-0 loss against co-host New Zealand. It had 1 more shot and as many on target as the co-host. In its 2nd match, which was Tuesday, it drew Switzerland 0-0. It had 7 more shots and 4 more on target yet didn’t manage a goal. Norway, which ranks No. 12 in the world per FIFA Women’s Rankings, was a strong favorite to get out of the group.

The Philippines rank 46th in the world. It beat New Zealand 1-0 following a 2-0 loss to Switzerland to open its World Cup action. It didn’t even manage a shot on target against Switzerland, allowing 8 shots on goal. It even had 12 fewer shots and 3 fewer shots on target than New Zealand despite coming out victorious. It had under 35% possession in both battles.

  • Moneyline: Norway -800 (bet $800 to win $100) | Philippines +1600 (bet $100 to win $1,600) | Draw +800
  • Over/Under: 3.5 (O: +130 | U: -185)

Norway vs. Philippines picks and predictions

Prediction

Norway 3, Philippines 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

There’s not much value on the moneyline nor a team-specific wager.

Norway is a strong favorite, and although it hasn’t won in the World Cup, its performances have looked like that of a team capable of going deep in the event.

At (-800), it is unplayable to win outright, and even both teams not to score at (-275) isn’t good enough value to consider. Ultimately, pass on team-specific wager.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET NORWAY OVER 2.5 (-135).

Norway, unless New Zealand loses, will need goal differential to help it get to the next round. That means it will want to put it on the Philippines.

Norway hasn’t scored yet in this tournament but had 15 shots against Switzerland and scored 2 or more in 3 straight games before the World Cup. It scored 2 on Portugal, 3 on Sweden and 2 on Spain – the latter 2 are top-tier nations.

It has a few elite scorers in F Ada Hegerberg and F Caroline Hansen, both of which can finish in the final third. Expect a betting showing from Norway and for its attack to come alive.

Take NORWAY OVER 2.5 (-135).

2023 Women’s World Cup: Switzerland vs. Norway odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Switzerland vs. Norway odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Norway (0-0-1 / W-D-L) battles Switzerland (1-0-0) Tuesday in a Group A stage match of the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Kickoff from FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand, is set for 4 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Switzerland vs. Norway odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Norway suffered a stunning 1-0 loss Thursday to kick off the event, falling to New Zealand, which benefited a bit with a home-field advantage. Norway outshot New Zealand 13-12 — both with 2 shots on target — but had 3 times as many fouls (15 to 5). Norway does have one of the best rosters in the world, led by F Ada Hegerberg, winner of the Women’s Ballon d’Or in 2018.

Switzerland opened its Cup action with a 2-0 victory over the Philippines 2-0 Friday. The Swiss had 17 shots and 8 on target, controlling possession 74% of the time. The Philippines had 3 shots and 0 on target. MF Seraina Piubel scored the lone non-penalty goal for the Swiss.

Norway ranks 12th in the FIFA Women’s Rankings; Switzerland is 20th.

Switzerland vs. Norway odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 6:22 p.m. ET.

  • Moneyline: Switzerland +250 (bet $100 to win $250) | Norway +110 (bet $100 to win $110) | Draw +220
  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: +120 | U: -165)

Switzerland vs. Norway picks and predictions

Prediction

Switzerland 1, Norway 1

Moneyline (ML)

SPRINKLE DRAW (+220).

Switzerland exceeded expectations while Norway didn’t in the first matchday for each side.

While Hegerberg is a star, she’s also 28 years old and won the best women’s player award in 2018. If Norway couldn’t get through New Zealand, it doesn’t seem likely it will be able to dominant a top-20 side like the Swiss.

Switzerland’s win over the Philippines was expected, and it matters less than the struggles Norway had. The Norwegians had 1 more shot than New Zealand and as many shots on target.

Those struggles should continue, and for the value, back a close game and a DRAW (+220).

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (-165).

Unders have been hot in the Women’s World Cup. Eight of the first 12 games through Sunday have cashed Under tickets, and several that have gone Over (Japan’s 5-0 win over Zambia and USA’s 3-0 win over Vietnam) were both expected to be high-goal games.

Both the Swiss and Norway went Under 2.5 in their openers, and both struggled to continually produce opportunities. Norway had just 2 shots on goal, while the Swiss had 8. Again, the Swiss had 74% possession and won’t dominate this game like it did against the Philippines — Norway had 50% possession vs. New Zealand.

Tuesday should feature a hard-fought battle, and as Norway proved in its 1st game, those typically have fewer goals. TAKE UNDER 2.5 (-165).

2023 Women’s World Cup: New Zealand vs. Norway odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s New Zealand vs. Norway odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

New Zealand battles Norway to commence the 2023 Women’s World Cup Thursday. Kickoff from Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, is set for 3 a.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the New Zealand vs. Norway odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

New Zealand has played 9 friendlies in 2023, losing all but 2 of them. It beat Vietnam 2-0 July 10 and drew Iceland 1-1 April 7. New Zealand lost by at least 2 goals in 5 of its 7 matches. Its closest competitions were 1-0 defeats to Argentina Feb. 23 and to Italy July 14. New Zealand, which ranks 26th in the Women’s FIFA World Rankings, received an automatic World Cup bid as a host.

Norway, which ranks 12th in the World Rankings, is 1-2-2 (W-L-draw) in 2023. Norway’s most recent friendlies were a 3-3 draw with Sweden April 11 and a 4-2 loss to Spain April 6. The Norwegian women went 1-1-1 in the 2023 Tournoi de France, placing 3rd in the February 4-team tournament — beating Uruguay 1-0, drawing France 0-0 and falling to Denmark 2-0. Norway qualified for the World Cup by going 9-0-1 in its qualifiers, placing atop Group F behind a dominating 47-2 goal advantage.

New Zealand vs. Norway odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 6:26 p.m. ET.

  • Moneyline: New Zealand +850 (bet $100 to win $850) | Norway -350 (bet $350 to win $100) | Draw +450
  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: -175 | U: +125)

New Zealand vs. Norway picks and predictions

Prediction

Norway 1, New Zealand 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

New Zealand (+850) may be at home, but it didn’t showcase enough to truly get behind the energy that being in front of its own fans will bring. It won’t be worth a gamble — even at +850 — against a Norwegian team that cruised through its qualifiers.

However, backing Norway at -350 doesn’t make much sense given the minimal reward.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (+125).

All 3 of Norway’s Tournoi de France matches finished Under 2.5 total goals, including a 1-0 win and a 0-0 draw. Norway has one of the best defenses in the tournament, giving up just 2 goals in 10 qualifying matches. Its most experienced player is D Maren Mjelde — the team’s captain has 165 caps.

Five of New Zealand’s last 6 matches have finished Under 2.5 goals, with 2 matches finishing with just 1 goal. New Zealand has scored just 3 goals in its last 9 matches. Against a quality defense, it will likely struggle to get opportunities.

TAKE UNDER 2.5 (+125).
