2023 Women’s World Cup: Costa Rica vs. Zambia odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Costa Rica vs. Zambia odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Costa Rica (0-2-0 / W-L-D) faces Zambia (0-2-0) Monday as Group C play comes to an end. Kickoff from Waikato Stadium is at 3 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Costa Rica vs. Zambia odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Costa Rica and Zambia came into this World Cup with little chance to advance and after 2 games everyone knows why. Neither team has scored a goal in the tournament and have yet to score a point. Monday will be the their last chance to go home on a high note.

Zambia lost both their matches by a whopping 5 goals, which is not surprising since Spain and Japan are serious competition for a Zambia team making their debut in the World Cup and ranked 77th in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.

Zambia started this tournament reeling after their goalkeeper Hazel Nali got injured days before the World Cup began, and in the waning minutes of their opening loss to Japan their backup goalie received a red card disqualifying her from playing against Spain. But still the Zambia defense allowed 22 shots, 13 of which were on goal, a tough ask for any goalie.

Costa Rica, 36th in the FIFA rankings, bounced back from a poor performance against Spain, where they took 1 shot (not on goal) and controlled the ball just 20% of the time. And Costa Rica failed to press Japan, despite improving their possession amount to 43% they took just 6 shots, 2 on goal, and failed to take a single corner kick.

Costa Rica vs. Zambia odds

  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: +125 | U: -175)

Costa Rica vs. Zambia picks and predictions

Prediction

Costa Rica 0, Zambia 0

Moneyline (ML)

Zambia’s goalkeeping has been a serious weakness for them, whether it’s their backup or the 3rd stringer. The African country allows the 2nd-worst shot-to-goal ratio in the World Cup (.20).

But for Costa Rica to seize any advantage they need to take shots on target and that has been their weak spot. They have a total of 2 shots on goal in 2 matches. And if you take all of their shots (including those off target) they average just 3.5 per game.

Zambia has been more aggressive when it comes to shots this tournament, although their 10 attempts are in the bottom half of this World Cup. But their accuracy is a problem, just 20% of their shots are on target, which is the 2nd-worst.

Looking at these teams its tough to see how anyone can score. Zambia’s goalie will be a liability but Costa Rica will need to apply pressure, which I don’t see happening in any consistent manner.

LEAN DRAW +250.

Over/Under (O/U)

The offenses for Zambia and Costa Rica come into Monday’s match quite rusty. They are both averaging 1 shot on goal per 90 minutes. And those shots aren’t taken close to the goal. Both teams are in the bottom 3rd of distance per shot (Zambia at 21.2 yards away and Costa Rica at 21.9 yards away).

These teams will need a lucky break to get one in the net and both teams’ defense has gotten plenty of experience these past couple games.

BET ALTERNATIVE UNDER 1.5 (+175) and if you do believe a scoreless tie is possible consider UNDER .5 (+550).

2023 Women’s World Cup: Japan vs. Costa Rica odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Japan vs. Costa Rica odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

In a Group C matchup, Japan (1-0-0 / W-D-L) and Costa Rica (0-0-1) meet Wednesday in the 2023 Women’s World Cup at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Japan vs. Costa Rica odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Japan rolled to a 5-0 victory against Zambia in the team’s opening match, as Hinata Miyazawa hit the back of the net twice, while Jun Endo, Mina Tanaka and Riko Ueki each contributed goals.

Costa Rica was on the short end of a 3-0 score against group favorite Spain. CRC had a difficult time in the possession game, with Spain winning the battle 80% to 20%, and Spain had 22 corner kicks to just 1. In addition, Costa Rica failed to get a shot on goal, while Spain racked up 12.

  • Moneyline: Japan -1200 (bet $1,200 to win $100) | Costa Rica +2800 (bet $100 to win $2,800) | Draw +1100
  • Over/Under: 3.5 (O: +130 | U: -185)

Japan vs. Costa Rica picks and predictions

Prediction

Japan 3, Costa Rica 0

Moneyline (ML)

Japan (-1200) will cost 12 times the potential return. That’s way too much risk for not nearly enough reward. A Costa Rica (+2800) victory would pay 28 to 1, but Costa Rica has very little shot at winning outright, PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

As long as Japan doesn’t go ballistic on the offensive end, playing the “multiple correct score” prop with JAPAN 1:0, 2:0 OR 3:0 (-105) is the way to go.

As far as the total, playing UNDER 3.5 GOALS (-185) is a solid play, based on the wager above. The -185 is more juice than I usually prefer, but I’m willing to risk it here.

In addition, take a look at the “half with most goals” prop, and consider the 2ND HALF (-105) as the winning play.

2023 Women’s World Cup: Spain vs. Costa Rica odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Spain vs. Costa Rica odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Spain and Costa Rica face off Friday to open Group C play. Kickoff from Wellington Regional Stadium is at 3:30 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Spain vs. Costa Rica odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Group C’s opener from Wellington, New Zealand, is not expected to change the narrative of both these teams. Spain is the favorite at -440 to win the group. The No. 6 team in the FIFA rankings and has the 2nd-shortest odds at +500 to win it all. No. 1 U.S. (+220) is the favorite, while England (+550), Germany (+700) and Australia (+850) are the only other teams with less than +1000 odds to win the Cup.

Spain’s national team has dominated recently, shutting out opponents in its last 4 matches, most recently routing Vietnam 9-0 July 13.

Costa Rica enters on a 4-game losing streak, scoring just once and suffering 3 shutouts. Costa Rica will likely be elated to score a few points in the group stage after missing the 2019 World Cup. At +10000, Costa Rica has the longest odds to win Group C — even though Zambia (+4900 to win Group C) is ranked lower in the FIFA rankings at 77, while Costa Rica is No. 36. Eleventh-ranked Japan (+400) has the 2nd-shortest odds to win the group.

That doesn’t mean Spain doesn’t have issues. The cohesion of this squad is not in a good place as several members walked away from the team to protest the coach Jorge Vilda’s style and decisions. Despite the unhappiness in the locker room, he will still coach Spain in the tournament.

  • Over/Under: 4.5 (O: -152 | U: +120)

Spain vs. Costa Rica picks and predictions

Prediction

Spain 3, Costa Rica 1

Moneyline (ML)

Spain (-10000) should win this game with ease, but the betting market makes that obvious call a bit worthless. I would never recommend a -10000 bet.

There are other bets to consider. A SAME GAME PARLAY OF SPAIN TO WIN AND BOTH TEAMS SCORE (+304) is an enticing option.

Spain is missing a few key players, including D Mapi Leon and MF Patri Guijarro — both disgruntled with the Royal Spanish Football Foundation. Their absence will hinder the defense, albeit slightly, which could open up a chance for Costa Rica to score.

Over/Under (O/U)

The moneyline odds on point toward a high-scoring match — mainly by Spain, but to put it in context, scoring in the Women’s World Cup in 2019 was nowhere close to this line.

Only 6 of the 36 group stage matches in 2019 exceeded the 4.5-goal total. Two of those came against lowly Jamaica and one was a 13-0 U.S. beatdown of Thailand.

BET UNDER 4.5 (+120).

CONCACAF Gold Cup: Mexico vs. Costa Rica odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Mexico vs. Costa Rica odds and lines, with expert soccer picks, predictions and best bets.

In the quarterfinal of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Mexico battles Costa Rica. Kickoff from AT&T Stadium in Dallas is set for 9:30 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we preview BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Mexico vs. Costa Rica odds, and make our best soccer bets, picks and predictions.

Mexico ended its Gold Cup group stage with a 1-0 loss Sunday to Qatar, which scored in its lone shot on target. Mexico beat Honduras 4-0 June 25 and Haiti 3-1 June 29 prior to losing its final battle. Mexico ended atop Group B with Qatar also qualifying for the knockout stage.

Costa Rica scored 7 goals (no player scored 2 goals) and allowed 6 goals through its 3 stage games, posting a 1-1-1 record. Costa Rica finished 2nd in Group C behind Panama, while Martinique and El Salvador were eliminated. Costa Rica beat Martinique 6-4 and drew El Salvador 0-0.

As of June 29, Mexico sits 14th on the FIFA World Ranking and Costa Rica ranks 42nd.

Mexico vs. Costa Rica picks and predictions

Prediction

Mexico 2, Costa Rica 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

Costa Rica did not look impressive in the group stage. It was outshot 10-4 by in a 2-1 loss to Panama and barely edged El Salvador in shots, 3-2, in the 0-0 draw.

While Mexico (-300) might have lost 3-0 to the USA in a Nations League Cup semifinal, it has looked better since. It lost to Qatar, but had 24 more shots and 5 more shots on target. Mexico had 17 or more shots in each group stage match.

Couple that offense with a disappointing group stage for Costa Rica, and it is clear these odds are justified. However, at -300, it doesn’t make much sense to play Mexico to straight-up win. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (+110).

Mexico has gone Under this total in 5 of 10 matches in 2023, and it has gone Under in 2 of its last 4 matches. Costa Rica has gone Under this total in 3 of its 7 games this year and has been held scoreless in 3 of its last 6 games.

It will be taking on a competent Mexico defense that allowed just 2 group stage goals as well. Mexico also allowed just 4 shots on goal through those matches, so it should be able to heavily limit Costa Rica.

In what should be a more competitive match than either side consistently faced in the group stage round, expect more difficulty in getting easy opportunities. BACK UNDER 2.5 (+110).

CONCACAF Gold Cup: Costa Rica vs. Panama odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Costa Rica vs. Panama odds and lines, with expert CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage game picks, predictions and best bets.

In a CONCACAF Gold Cup Group C matchup, Costa Rica and Panama meet Monday at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET (FS1/fuboTV). Below, we preview BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Costa Rica vs. Panama odds, and make our best soccer bets, picks and predictions.

These clubs met on March 28 in a CONCACAF Nations League matchup in San Jose, Costa Rica, with the visitors coming away with a 1-0 victory. Despite losing, CRC managed to win the possession battle 58% to just 42%.

Costa Rica managed a 2-1 road win against Martinique in a Nations League matchup on March 25, but it has dropped 3 straight matches, including a 3-1 setback against Ecuador in an international friendly on June 20 in suburban Philadelphia.

Panama had a shot at a medal in the Nations League but lost to Mexico 1-0 in the 3rd-place match. It has won 2 of the past 4 games overall, including that victory over Costa Rica.

Costa Rica vs. Panama picks and predictions

Prediction

Panama 1, Costa Rica 0

Moneyline (ML)

These nations just clashed in San Jose in late March, with PANAMA (+125) coming through with the 1-0 victory. This is a team that was playing for a medal in the Nations League and has been a finely tuned machine against sides it is supposed to beat.

Costa Rica hasn’t been nearly as consistent on the international stage lately, and it is likely to come up short against its neighbor yet again.

Over/Under (O/U)

Under 2.5 (-200) is just too expensive, costing 2 times your potential return.

Take a chance on the alternate total UNDER 1.5 (+145) instead. Panama has been blanked in its last 2 CONCACAF matchups, conceding just 3 total goals in the 2 games. Costa Rica has been held scoreless in 2 of its last 3 matchups overall, including being shut out the last time it faced Panama.

In addition, playing NO (-150): BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE is also a recommended play. I’d also take a chance on the Halftime and Fulltime line, taking TIE/PANAMA (+400) for a chance to multiply your initial wager by 4 times. You’ll simply want to pull for the match to be tied at halftime and look for Los Canaleros to hit the back of the net in the final 45.

2022 World Cup: Spain vs. Costa Rica odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Spain vs. Costa Rica odds and lines, with World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Spain will battle Costa Rica in Wednesday’s 2nd match of Group E group stage play with kickoff at Al Thumama Stadium set for 11 a.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Spain vs. Costa Rica odds, and make our best World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Spain is another big name in this competition, typically a breeding ground for talent and strong players. The No. 7-ranked team by FIFA is walking with their heads high having a strong 2022 season with a 6-1-2 mark. Those wins include Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.

Spain has a phenomenal lineup with names such as: D Cesar Azpilicueta, D Jordi Alba, M Pedri, M Sergio Busquets, F Ansu Fati, F Fernan Torres. This is a young squad overall, but full of pace and talent. Spain’s defense will be their strongest point with Chelsea captain Azpilicueta leading the way.

Costa Rica, No. 31 in FIFA’s ranings, is 8-1-1 in 2022 with wins over the USA, Canada, and Honduras. GK Keylor Navas is one of the best keepers in the tournament, a very seasoned keeper playing 13 seasons in his career.

One of their more talented players, M Johan Vengas has 11 goals in 82 caps. F Anthony Contreras has 2 goals in 9 matches played as well. This team has proven their ability to put the ball in the back of the net, especially against a quality opponent.

Prediction

Spain 2, Costa Rica 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

Spain has a stronger lineup with younger talent that plays well together and plays with a lot of pace behind them.

The midfield duo of M Sergio Busquets, who ages like fine wine in the football world, and the youngster M Pedri, will be something special to watch.  Someone that I believe to be the underdog of the team is F Ansu Fati. He was a star for Barcelona until he suffered several injuries that kept him out for a year.

Ultimately, there just isn’t value in backing Costa Rica or a draw and certainly no value on the (-650) Spain moneyline.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (+130).

With the defense of Spain and the weaker attack of Costa Rica, I see it being a struggle for Costa Rica to score. Spain is young and fast, but their lack of tournament experience in the front 3 may pose problems for them to score as well.

What Spain lacks for in experience in their front attackers, they will make up for with Busquets in the midfield, plus their back 4 defenders. Pedri and M Gavi are also a midfield duo at FC Barcelona, so have great chemistry. That should aid them in dominating possession and the game but necessarily pressing to crush Costa Rica.

Back the Under 2.5 (+130). While both teams have talent in the attack, I believe this will overall be a defensive battle.

Costa Rica vs. USA odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Costa Rica vs. USA odds and lines, with CONCACAF World Cup qualifying picks and predictions.

Team USA (7 wins, 2 losses, 4 draws) visits the National Stadium of Costa Rica Wednesday to take on Costa Rica (6-3-4) in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:05  p.m. ET. Below, we preview the Costa Rica vs. USA odds and lines, and make our best World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Both teams are in a good position to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

USA enters the match after a 0-0 draw March 24 against Mexico in Mexico City and a 5-1 victory Sunday over Panama behind a hat trick by F Christian Pulisic. It is riding a four-match unbeaten streak in World Cup qualifying. USA has scored 21 and allowed 8 goals in its 13 matches.

Costa Rica plays a slow game with a dominating defense as well. It has  allowed just 8 goals, but scored a mere 11. However, it is riding a 3-game World Cup qualifying winning streak and will be at home.

With a win, Costa Rica will pull into a 3-way tie with the USA and Mexico, one that can only be broken if Mexico loses to El Salvador. With goal difference then mattering, the USA is safe from the 4th spot in CONCACAF,  which goes for a playoff, unless it loses to Costa Rica by 6 goals.

Costa Rica vs. USA: Odds, picks and predictions

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 11:05 a.m ET.

  • Money line: Costa Rica +260 (bet $100 to win $260) | USA +127 (bet $100 to win $127) | Draw +205 (bet $100 to win $205)
  • Over/Under: 2.5 (O: +145 | U: -180)

[tipico]

Prediction

Costa Rica 1, USMNT 1

Money line (ML)

LEAN to the DRAW (+205).

Costa Rica hasn’t lost in 3 straight games and is playing quality soccer. Its last loss was 1-0 to Canada on Nov. 31.

In its last 4 road matches, the USA has drawn twice and lost twice, not giving bettors much confidence in the road side despite Sunday’s electric win over Panama.

Also, the USA basically has a World Cup spot locked up, so players like Pulisic may not see a third straight game of high-volume minutes. Given the USA’s struggles on the road and Costa Rica’s recent dominance, I’ll take the draw in this battle.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS.

The Under 2.5 is the best play here, but it’s far too juiced at -180 to really consider, especially as both sides are coming off a match in which the Over 2.5 would have hit.

With that in mind, play BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE at +110  as my best bet. While Costa Rica doesn’t have a thriving attack, it has scored in its last 3 games and will be at home.

As for the US, it’s bringing an A squad captained by Pulisic and M Gio Reyna, who could lead the team’s midfield. USA has scored in 7 of its last 9 qualifying matches.

I expect both to score in this one.

CONCACAF Gold Cup: Costa Rica vs. Canada odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Costa Rica vs. Canada odds and lines, with CONCACAF Gold Cup picks and predictions.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup continues Sunday with a quarterfinals matchup between Costa Rica and Canada in a 7 p.m. ET kickoff at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Below, we preview the Costa Rica vs. Canada odds and lines, and make our best CONCACAF Gold Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Costa Rica won Group C and seemed to get better as the matches went on. It opened with a 3-1 win over Guadeloupe before a 2-1 win over Suriname. It took a red card in the third and final game but topped Jamaica 1-0 to secure the top spot in the group.

Canada blasted both Martinique and Haiti in a pair of 4-1 victories before falling by a 1-0 count to the United States Sunday in the decisive match for the top of the group.

Prediction

Costa Rica 1, Canada 1 (CRC advances on penalties)

Money line (ML)

The best play on the board is a DRAW (+195) after regular time, as I believe this match will be decided on penalties.

My lean is taking COSTA RICA (-125) as the team to advance to the next round, but it is going to be a super tight affair. I also like YES (-105): BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 (-175) is rather costly, but this will not be a match with end-to-end action. It’s going to be tight with very few scoring chances, especially during the early going as these sides feel each other out.

Yes, Canada averaged 2.7 goals per match during group play, but it was blanked by the USA, as the only legitimate side it faced.
