Scouts view: Newest Ohio State verbal, 2023 quarterback Lincoln Kienholz

The Bucks found their 2023 QB #GoBucks

The Buckeyes found their 2023 answer at quarterback on Wednesday when former [autotag]Washington[/autotag] commit [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag] made his flip to [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] official.

After the decommitment of [autotag]Brock Glenn[/autotag], [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] went into scramble mode to fill the open spot in the class, and the effort has paid off.

As a former scout for Prep RedZone, and having identified major college players as early as their eighth grade year, I love to give my input on what my scout’s eyes see from a newly committed Ohio State prospect. Here is what I saw when watching Kienholz’s Hudl tape.

Before getting into Kienholz’s performance on the field, knowing he is a three-sport star (baseball, basketball) made me very excited to break down his film. With great size at 6 feet, 3 inches and 195 pounds, he has the frame to add more than a few pounds when he arrives in Columbus and gets integrated into the weight room and training table.

Clearly, a great athlete, Kienholz’s arm is above average. It is not quite elite, but it’s pretty darn good. He shows very impressive touch on deep and intermediate throws, while his accuracy shines on his shorter attempts. Kienholz’s athleticism shows when the play breaks down, and he has to move out of the pocket. He is a very solid runner who can move the chains when needed. The footwork is impressive, squaring his shoulders to make throws on the move.

Kienholz is a winner, having won four straight state titles in football while being named the 11AA player of the year and becoming South Dakota’s all-time passing leader. Expect him to redshirt his first year in Columbus, as he adds weight and gets used to a higher competition level. The Buckeyes received a pledge from high floor quarterback, even if Kienholz’s ceiling isn’t as high as some of Day’s recent recruits.

Notre Dame offers Pittsburgh 2023 quarterback commit

Another flip target has gotten an offer

The Irish are leaving no stone unturned in their search for a 2023 quarterback. They have recently been after Baylor commit [autotag]Austin Novosad[/autotag] and recently hosted him for a visit.

[autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] isn’t going to wait for Novosad to make a decision on if he’s going to flip, Freeman also will try his hand at flipping another quarterback, current Pittsburgh commit [autotag]Kenny Minchey[/autotag]. The Tennessee quarterback has been committed to the Panthers since the end of April, but after tweeting out an offer from the Irish, it seems like he is very interested. Like Novosad, Minchey impressed at the Elite 11 camp which put many more eyes on the prospect.

The Irish have made it widely known they do indeed want a 2023 quarterback in their class, even with 2024 quarterback [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag] already committed. The 6-foot-2-inch and 210-pound Minchey is their next target.

Notre Dame pulls trigger, offers Baylor 2023 quarterback commitment

The Irish are still looking for their 2023 quarterback…

A few weeks ago during the Elite 11 Finals, Baylor quarterback commit [autotag]Austin Novosad[/autotag] mentioned to reporters that he wanted Notre Dame to reach out. Well, that has happened and not only that, the Irish offered Novosad a scholarship earlier this evening.

The six-foot-three-inch and 185-pound Texan has been committed to Baylor since December of last year, but that has not stopped him from flirting with plenty of other schools in the recent months. It does seem that he would like to pursue different options and now [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] has entered the chat as one. Although Novosad is still “committed” to the Bears, it does seem like the Irish have a legit shot to flip him.

Currently the Irish do not have a quarterback commit in the 2023 class and up until today, it didn’t seem like Novosad was a possibility. That has changed very quickly with the offer and it is a recruitment to monitor over the next few months.

On3 prediction entered in favor of Texas for five-star QB Arch Manning

Although six programs are in contention to land Manning, Texas has been in solid position for quite some time.

After bringing in the No. 5 recruiting class in the country for the 2022 cycle, Steve Sarkisian and his staff are still looking to gain some momentum for the 2023 class. Continue reading “On3 prediction entered in favor of Texas for five-star QB Arch Manning”

Steve Wiltfong confirms six schools are in play for five-star QB Arch Manning

Wiltfong confirmed the six schools in the running for Arch Manning.

It’s no secret as to why Arch Manning’s recruitment is garnering national attention. Continue reading “Steve Wiltfong confirms six schools are in play for five-star QB Arch Manning”

Texas reportedly among five-star QB Arch Manning’s final two schools

Great news for the Longhorns!

The road to securing an Arch Manning commitment may be closer than Texas fans realize.

College football analyst for First Coast News and Heisman Trophy voter, Brent Beaird, joined ESPN Upstate’s Offsides With Marc Ryan and broke some huge news on the recruitment of 2023 five-star and No. 1 overall recruit Arch Manning.

After the elimination of Clemson from his final few schools to cut his decision down to four, Beaird expressed his belief that two more schools have fallen out of the Manning sweepstakes.

Beaird believes the final two standing are Texas and Alabama. That would drop Ole Miss and Georgia from his recruitment.

Securing a commitment from Manning would mean that Texas has two former No. 1 overall recruits, both at the quarterback position, in Manning and Quinn Ewers.

It is unknown when Manning will officially commit, as for the most part his recruitment is very close to the chest, but Texas is seemingly attempting to pull out all the stops to secure his commitment. Their pursuit to convince former Duke head coach David Cutcliffe, who coached both of his uncles, to join the staff it is obvious Texas is all in on Manning.

They will likely need to show major improvement on the field in 2022 to help their case.

A commit from four-star QB Jackson Arnold may get the Sooners rolling for their 2023 recruiting efforts

Oklahoma received multiple predictions saying OU will land a commitment from 2023 four-star quarterback Jackson Arnold.

Oklahoma has finally gotten the much-needed stabilization they needed following the upheaval that occurred at the core of their program when Lincoln Riley left following their loss to their in-state rivals in Oklahoma State.

Initially, the most important focus outside of getting a new head coach and a new staff in place was that of securing their 2022 recruiting class. Some commits left and didn’t come back while others left and came back. Some of their 2022 commits never wavered and remained committed.

The 2023 class was not nearly as forgiving. At the time, the Sooners boasted the nation’s number one class for 2023 led by a slew of talented offensive playmakers. Malachi Nelson, Brandon Inniss, Makai Lemon, Treyaun Webb, and Luke Hasz all were in the boat so to speak.

Recruited by Lincoln Riley, these 2023 recruits decommitted when news of Riley’s departure and eventual hiring at USC went final. Some like Nelson and Lemon followed him to USC. The rest are still going through the recruiting process looking for new homes.

Oklahoma has reset their 2023 board under Brent Venables and his coordinators in Jeff Lebby (offense) and Ted Roof (defense). Plus, the rest of the coaching staff have begun attacking the recruiting trail swiftly.

The centerpiece for almost every college football recruiting class is the quarterback. The Sooners plan to cast a wider net for quarterbacks than they ever did under Riley’s guidance. Riley would hone in on one or two quarterbacks, find his quarterback and that would be it.

He would also recruit quarterbacks every other year as opposed to taking one every year. Lebby doesn’t plan to do that as he already has signed a 2022 quarterback named Nick Evers and is hot on the trail for his first 2023 commit and quarterback in four-star Jackson Arnold.

Arnold received two predictions in favor of the Sooners recently with one being from the national director of football recruiting for 247Sports in Steve Wiltfong. On top of that, the prediction is a 7/10, indicating Wiltfong feels pretty strongly that Arnold and the Sooners have a strong relationship and that a commitment seems all but a formality.

It’s a massive deal for the Sooners for a myriad of reasons. The most important one is this: The Sooners need to start their 2023 recruiting under Brent Venables with a bang. They need to show the rest of the college football world that the show doesn’t stop because Riley isn’t here. A top-50 recruit being the Sooners’ first commit of the new era of Sooners football would galvanize the class and get the momentum rolling for them to get back into the top 10 of recruiting rankings.

A top-50 recruit that happens to be a quarterback? Well, that’s just even sweeter. Classes are way easier to build around when you have a quarterback to help you recruit. Players always flock to the quarterbacks because of the natural leadership position they are put in. Arnold is a Texas kid and could lend a major hand in helping some of the Sooners’ targets who are also from the state of Texas in hopping on board too.

There’s a major domino effect waiting to happen if somehow the Sooners can get a commitment from Arnold. Sometimes all recruits need is a reason to believe and a commitment could show them that they too could be in good hands if they commit to Oklahoma under this staff.

There’s no timetable for Arnold’s decision but with multiple 247Sports crystal balls and Rivals FutureCasts in for him already, it’s very obvious Oklahoma is putting itself in a prime spot.

Report: Texas coaches expected to visit with Arch Manning this week

Texas continues its recruitment of top prospect Arch Manning.

Texas’ pursuit of five-star 2023 quarterback Arch Manning continues.

Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports reported on Tuesday that Texas quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee is set to visit Manning later this week.

The Horns are one of many teams to see the No. 1 recruit this week. Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Ohio State are just some of the programs expected to sit down with Manning.

Texas has been in a good spot with Manning for the majority of his recruiting process so far. He has a good relationship with Steve Sarkisian, has taken multiple visits to Austin and likes the idea of playing in the SEC.

The addition of Quinn Ewers seems like it will not play into Manning’s decision. Most of Arch’s top schools have loaded quarterback rooms as is.

Manning’s decision will have a ripple effect across the nation. Many other top prospects have expressed interest in playing with Manning at the next level.

LSU offers top 50 prospect, quarterback Jackson Arnold of Denton Guyer

One of the top Texas quarterbacks picks up an offer.

On Thursday, Denton Guyer junior quarterback Jackson Arnold became the No. 8 passer to receive an offer from LSU in the 2023 recruiting class. Three of which have already committed to other programs. Malachi Nelson is heading to USC, in-state quarterback Eli Holstein is heading to Texas A&M, and Baton Rouge quarterback Rickie Hollins pledged to Purdue.

The top target of the class is Arch Manning but the LSU Tigers have been out of the running for some time now. Arnold is a prospect that really rose up the boards with his junior season for the Denton Guyer Wildcats. Arnold led the Wildcats all the way to the 6A Division II state championship game.

In 2021, he completed 66.5% of his passes for 3,921 yards with a 34-5 touchdown-interception ratio. He is listed as a pro-style quarterback but don’t be fooled by the label, Arnold can scoot. He added 12 rushing touchdowns and 659 rushing yards this past season.

He shows good poise in the pocket and has good awareness when dropping back to pass. Arnold knows when to move the pocket and when to climb. He seems really polished for a junior quarterback at the high school level. Arnold is currently coached by LSU alum Jordan Johnson. That could help when recruiting a quarterback for the 2023 class, or it could mean nothing as they are later in the process than other schools like Oklahoma.

Five-star QB Arch Manning shares his thoughts on Quinn Ewers signing with Texas

It sounds like the Quinn Ewers signing will not impact Arch Manning’s decision.

The Texas football program is on an all-time high as of late thanks to a strong recruiting class for the 2022 cycle.

However, the biggest splash over the last month is generational talent Quinn Ewers signing with Texas. The Ohio State transfer who held the highest ranking ever as a recruit decided to head back home.

It’s a move that has already scared away quarterbacks on the roster, as Casey Thompson announced his intentions to transfer days after Ewers signed. Landing Ewers is massive for the present moment, but many feared it would hurt their chances with 2023 No. 1 overall player and quarterback, Arch Manning.

Prior to the Ewers decision, Texas was viewed as the favorite to land Manning thanks to the strong relationship he has with head coach Steve Sarkisian. Now, many are speculating that Manning will not want to sit behind Ewers for a year or two. In an interview with On3 (subscription required), Manning shared his thoughts on Ewers landing at Texas, and how that does not deter him.

“I think there are going to be good players everywhere. You can’t really look at it based off other players and depth charts. I think you just have to find the best place for you. … He’s a really good player. I stay in touch with him. He’s a good guy. I’m excited to see what he can do this year and hear all about it.”

This bodes well for Texas, who has struggled with recruiting top quarterback talent. Outside of Maalik Murphy and Ewers, who are both members Sarkisian’s most recent class, the Longhorns have had issues in the past with recruiting the nation’s top quarterback prospects.

If Sarkisian can find a way to convince Manning to be the heir to Ewers’ throne, it could have the makings of Texas’ best quarterback situation since Colt McCoy took over for Vince Young.
