Big 12 Bowl Projections: Sooners to face incoming and ascending Big 12 squad in Bowl Season

The Oklahoma Sooners will play a future Big 12 member in the latest Bowl Projections from USA TODAY Sports.

The regular season is over, and all that awaits before knowing OU’s bowl destination is championship weekend. The Oklahoma Sooners just missed out on the Big 12 title game. It’s the third season in a row that the Sooners won’t play for the conference title.

Things are improving at Oklahoma, but after running the Big 12 to the tune of 14 conference championships, it stings a bit not to be able to play for one more.

Still, 10-2 is better than 6-6. The Sooners are showing they’re a program on the right track as they get ready for the SEC. Recruiting is better on both sides of the ball and in 2023, we began to see glimpses of Brent Venables’ recruiting classes impacting the game.

In Oklahoma’s bowl game, we’ll likely get to see more of the youth the Sooners have added since Brent Venables’ arrival. Who will they play? Let’s take a look at the latest Big 12 Bowl Projections via USA TODAY Sports.

Big 12 Bowl Projections: Sooners face Pac-12 power in latest projections from USA TODAY Sports

According to the latest Big 12 bowl projections, the Oklahoma Sooners take on the Utah Utes.

The final two weeks of the regular season are upon us. It’s crunch time for the conference title and College Football Playoff contenders. While the playoff is out of reach for the Sooners, they still have an outside shot at a Big 12 title game berth.

They’ll need to take care of business against BYU and TCU over the next nine days. But if the Sooners finish strongly and get a little help, one final trip to Arlington is certainly in the cards.

But at the moment, they’re on the outside looking in, and that affects where they’re heading in USA TODAY Sports’ latest bowl projections.

Let’s take a look at where the Big 12’s projected postseason landing spots.

Sooners head to familiar territory in USA TODAY Sports latest bowl projections

In the latest bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports, the Oklahoma Sooners are heading to familiar territory.

The Big 12 has provided some entertaining football through the first eight weeks of the season. At the moment, nine teams are at or above .500 in the conference. Baylor, UCF, and Houston are just one game under the bowl eligibility line.

There’s a long way to go, but it’s possible nine teams could end up bowl eligible.

The big question for the Big 12? Will Oklahoma or Texas be able to do enough in 2023 to make the College Football Playoff on their way out the door?

Here’s where the Big 12 landed in USA TODAY Sports latest bowl projections.

Sooners still outside of playoff in USA TODAY Sports latest Bowl Projections after Texas win

Where are the Oklahoma Sooners headed in USA TODAY Sports latest bowl projections after their Red River Rivalry win over the Texas Longhorns?

The Big 12 season has been wild to this point. It’s been filled with upsets galore and the Oklahoma Sooners have been the only team to avoid a letdown in the conference.

Their win over Texas was the most-watched game of the weekend and social media was buzzing after the win. The Sooners have seen their stock soar in the US LBM Coaches Poll, the AP Top 25, and Joel Klatt’s top 10. Additionally, they took over the top spot in our Big 12 power rankings after week six.

The team is playing good football and the coaching staff is hitting all the right notes as Oklahoma moved to 6-0 on the season.

But where did they land in USA TODAY Sports’ latest bowl projections? Let’s take a look.

They still have a lot to prove on the field to accomplish what they want this season, but it’s so far so good for the Sooners.

USA TODAY Sports Big 12 Bowl projections for the 2023 season

A look at the final preseason bowl projections for the Big 12 from USA TODAY Sports.

Week 1 will give us a full slate of games this weekend, marking the full start of the 2023 college football season.

The Oklahoma Sooners should get off to a great start against the visiting Arkansas State Red Wolves. It’s expected the Sooners will bounce back this season, erasing what happened in the 2022 season and truly kickstarting the Brent Venables era in Norman.

How successful the season will be is anyone’s guess. Most expect the Sooners to get back into the Big 12 title game or at least win nine or ten games.

As we’ve seen in recent years, the Big 12 is difficult to figure, with one or two teams often exceeding preseason expectations.

With the start of the Oklahoma Sooners season coming Saturday, let’s take one more look at the USA TODAY Sports bowl projections and where each Big 12 team lands. The College Football Playoff projection features some regular attendees.

Is another trip to the College Football Playoff’s in store for the Buckeyes? #GoBucks

Spring football has ended and although we are still months away from the start of college football for the 2023 season, it hasn’t stopped 247Sports from projecting where [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] and every other school will end up during bowl season.

Brad Crawford had the difficult task of making these picks and we all know these are subject to change but it’s still fun to take a look at. Multiple factors can change the course of a season like injuries, suspensions, and mid-season transfers.

Find out below where 247Sports expects Ohio State to finish their season along with all the other teams making bowl games.

College Football News predicts Big 12 bowl destinations for 2023

In their 2023 spring bowl projections, College Football News expects 11 of the Big 12’s 14 teams to go bowling.

The expanded Big 12 will play with 14 teams in the 2023 season before the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns depart for the SEC in 2024. It’s going to create quite an intriguing dynamic between the three separate groups of teams.

There’s Oklahoma and Texas who are leaving. BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF are coming in. Then there are the remaining 8: Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, TCU and West Virginia.

College Football News has high hopes for the 14-team Big 12 and believes 11 of the schools are going to be playing in bowl season. The only three it isn’t projecting to a bowl are Iowa State, Houston and West Virginia.

Here’s a look at where the Big 12 is headed in the site’s spring bowl predictions.

Notre Dame football: Early bowl projections – The Andy Ludwig Bowl?

We can only wonder what the pregame storylines would be about…

I’d say that it’s way too early to be going over bowl projections but is it actually?  When I saw recently that 247Sports had some out my first thought wasn’t “Oh my goodness, it’s too early for such a thing,” but instead was “where are they sending Notre Dame?”.

The projections, put together by Brad Crawford, were released on March 1.  The matchup Crawford calls for Notre Dame to have certainly would be an interesting one after the events of this off-season.

247Sports/Crawford Notre Dame bowl projection:  Holiday Bowl vs. Utah

Crawford mentions that both teams making the Holiday Bowl would feel like a bit of a disappointment considering how the Irish and Utes appear headed into spring football.

If the Utes and Fighting Irish play out in San Diego next season, that means each team fell slightly below expectations. Utah has won consecutive Pac-12 championships while Notre Dame hopes to get back inside the top 10 in Marcus Freeman’s second campaign. The Fighting Irish added Wake Forest quarterback transfer Sam Hartman from the portal, but did lose OC Tommy Rees to Alabama. He’s been replaced by a promoted assistant and that decision must payoff for Freeman.
– Brad Crawford on 247Sports: March 1, 2023

He’s right that anything short of a New Year’s Six bowl game will feel like a bit of a disappointment for Notre Dame, even with the significant coaching staff changes.  However, if these two are to meet in the postseason, can the trophy of the game be made into a silver rendering of the infamous Gerad Parker, Andy Ludwig, and Marcus Freeman picture (see below) from the Irish hockey game earlier this off-season?

Notre Dame and Utah have only met once in what resulted in an Irish victory in November of 2010.
