Big 12 Bowl Projections: Sooners to face incoming and ascending Big 12 squad in Bowl Season

The Oklahoma Sooners will play a future Big 12 member in the latest Bowl Projections from USA TODAY Sports.

The regular season is over, and all that awaits before knowing OU’s bowl destination is championship weekend. The Oklahoma Sooners just missed out on the Big 12 title game. It’s the third season in a row that the Sooners won’t play for the conference title.

Things are improving at Oklahoma, but after running the Big 12 to the tune of 14 conference championships, it stings a bit not to be able to play for one more.

Still, 10-2 is better than 6-6. The Sooners are showing they’re a program on the right track as they get ready for the SEC. Recruiting is better on both sides of the ball and in 2023, we began to see glimpses of Brent Venables’ recruiting classes impacting the game.

In Oklahoma’s bowl game, we’ll likely get to see more of the youth the Sooners have added since Brent Venables’ arrival. Who will they play? Let’s take a look at the latest Big 12 Bowl Projections via USA TODAY Sports.

The Oklahoma Sooners head into the regular season finale still with a shot to make the Big 12 title game. They have to beat TCU on Friday and hope for some good things to go their way, but there’s still a chance.

A win over the Horned Frogs would give Brent Venables his first 10-win season as a head coach and Oklahoma the bounce-back season they needed heading into the SEC in 2024.

With bowl season right around the corner, the Big 12 has eight teams that have earned bowl eligibility. BYU, UCF, and TCU can all earn bowl bids if they can pick up a win this Saturday.

BYU plays Oklahoma State. A Cougars win and a Sooners win puts Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game.

Here’s a look at the latest Big 12 bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports.

Big 12 Bowl Projections: Sooners face Pac-12 power in latest projections from USA TODAY Sports

According to the latest Big 12 bowl projections, the Oklahoma Sooners take on the Utah Utes.

The final two weeks of the regular season are upon us. It’s crunch time for the conference title and College Football Playoff contenders. While the playoff is out of reach for the Sooners, they still have an outside shot at a Big 12 title game berth.

They’ll need to take care of business against BYU and TCU over the next nine days. But if the Sooners finish strongly and get a little help, one final trip to Arlington is certainly in the cards.

But at the moment, they’re on the outside looking in, and that affects where they’re heading in USA TODAY Sports’ latest bowl projections.

Let’s take a look at where the Big 12’s projected postseason landing spots.

USA TODAY Sports latest Big 12 Bowl Projections after Week 2 action

Updated Big 12 Bowl Projections from USA TODAY Sports after week 2.

The Oklahoma Sooners have picked up two solid wins to start the 2023 season and look like a team that will be in contention in the Big 12 this season.

There are some really good teams at the top of the league this year, with Texas and Kansas State looking like the primary foes for the Sooners to make a return trip to the Big 12 title game.

They still have a lot to prove on the field to accomplish what they want this season, but it’s so far so good for the Sooners.

After beating SMU in week two, where does USA TODAY Sports project the Sooners and the rest of the Big 12 to land in their latest round of 2023 bowl projections.

It is time for us to start looking ahead to the postseason as the 2022 college football regular season has come to an end.

TCU is set up pretty to clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff while Kansas State looks to tarnish the Frogs’ unbeaten season in the Big 12 title game. Both TCU and Kansas State are safe bets to get New Year’s Six Bowl bids.

The rest of the league’s eligible teams will fill out the Big 12 bowl tie-ins.

  • Alamo Bowl
  • Cheez-It Bowl
  • Texas Bowl
  • Liberty Bowl
  • Guaranteed Rate Bowl

Updated bowl game projections for each Big 12 football team

At this point in the season, USA TODAY Sports projects nine Big 12 teams to go bowling.

The Big 12 title race is wide open right now and over a handful of teams will likely become bowl eligible by the conclusion of the season.

Kansas has taken the conference by surprise with an undefeated record through five weeks. Oklahoma has dropped consecutive games to Big 12 opponents and is on the brink of essentially being eliminated from Big 12 title contention with a third loss to Texas this week.

Oklahoma State is far and away the top team in the conference, while Baylor, Kansas State and a few others will remain legitimate contenders.

Through the first five weeks of the season, USA TODAY Sports projects nine Big 12 teams to reach a bowl game. Here’s a look at where they each land.

Where are the Big 12 teams headed in USA TODAY Sports latest bowl projections?

Through the first three weeks of the season, USA TODAY Sports projects eight Big 12 teams to reach a bowl game.

The Oklahoma Sooners haven’t necessarily faced the toughest competition in their three wins to start the season. At the same time, they’ve won each game by an average margin of 32 points per game.

That’s what good teams are supposed to do against inferior opponents.

The 3-0 start has the Oklahoma Sooners on the right trajectory, rising to No. 6 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll, but they still have much to prove.

Their next opportunity to make a statement comes to Norman this Saturday evening as Kansas State looks to rebound from their 17-10 loss to Tulane.

Both teams look headed for bowl season through three weeks in the latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections from Erick Smith. This game will help Oklahoma’s cause as they look to return to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019.

At the moment, eight of the ten Big 12 teams are projected to make a bowl appearance this season. The only two who will miss out, according to Smith, are Texas Tech and West Virginia.

Let’s take a look at where the Big 12 is headed in Smith’s latest projections.

Texas Longhorns Football: Latest USA TODAY Sports Bowl projections

A New Year’s Six bowl was the goal of head coach Tom Herman. According to USA TODAY Sports’ latest projections, UT will not accomplish it.

Coming off a bye week, Texas will host Baylor for matchup No. 108 between the two schools. The Longhorns are 2-2 this season, while the Bears have played only two games and are 1-1.

With back-to-back losses to TCU and Oklahoma, Texas’ potential bowl options have fallen below expectations. Going into the season, a Big 12 championship and New Year’s Six bowl at a minimum was the goal of head coach Tom Herman.

According to USA TODAY Sports’ latest projections, the Longhorns will be nowhere near accomplishing their goal.

For the second consecutive week, the Cactus Bowl against Northwestern is the projected site and opponent for Texas. In the history of the two programs, they have faced off once, with Dana Bible’s team losing in Evanston.

The Wildcats will kick off their season on Saturday when they host Maryland. Northwestern is coming off a 3-9 season and will look for a bounce-back year in the Big Ten.

Despite not playing last week, Oklahoma State remains in the Cotton Bowl against Penn State. The Cowboys had their game against Baylor rescheduled due to COVID-19. It would be the first New Year’s Six bowl for Mike Gundy since the 2015 loss to Ole Miss.

Here are the rest of the projected conference bowl matchups:

  • Oklahoma vs. USC in the Alamo Bowl
  • West Virginia vs. South Carolina in the Liberty Bowl
  • Baylor vs. SMU in the First Responders Bowl
  • Kansas State vs. Miami (Florida) in the Cheez-It Bowl
  • Iowa State vs. Arkansas in the Texas Bowl

If Texas wants to avoid the Cactus Bowl and move toward a better matchup, moving up the standings in the Big 12 is a must. As things stand, the Longhorns are below seven teams in the standings. Luckily, five of them remain on the schedule.

With readjusted expectations after the 2-2 start, even the Cactus Bowl would be deemed a failure for Herman. Working toward getting back into the Alamo Bowl would help the fourth-year head coach’s job status.
