‘We’re going to come back and be stronger’: In defeat, Patty Gasso knows Sooners will respond

The Oklahoma Sooners didn’t play well enough to win on Sunday and Patty Gasso knows her team will respond with the right mentality.

The Oklahoma Sooners hadn’t lost in more than a year: 71 games ago. But the streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon in a 7-5 extra-inning thriller against a well-coached Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns team.

The three-time defending national champions who have set just about every record in the book in recent years looked vulnerable for the first time in a long time. But it was a long time coming.

Speaking with the media after the game, head coach Patty Gasso shared what happened in the loss to Louisiana.

“We are human,” Gasso said. “We are human beings. That’s what happened today. Got absolutely give credit to Louisiana. They played well. They pitched well. They hit the ball hard. They did everything they needed to do. They deserve to win 100%.”

While the Ragin’ Cajuns kept the Sooners from creating one more magical moment, Oklahoma often shot itself in the foot. But Gasso believes in her team’s ability to respond.

“We knew a game like this would be coming at some time,” Gasso continued. “I don’t know that we were ready to have happen here. So, nothing was good enough today for us. And we had the spirit of coming back, which was great. But from defense, pitching to timely hitting, we wasted a lot of time early in the game. This was a game we didn’t deserve to win, and we know how to come back. I know there’s too much pride on this team for us to mope around over it. We’re going to come back and be stronger. We’ve shown that and we’re made like that.”

The Sooners weren’t going to win every game from now to eternity. That was a certainty. While the loss stings, the Oklahoma Sooners were incredible for more than a year. For 71 games, much of which was in Big 12 and NCAA tournament play, the Oklahoma Sooners found a way to win. When the moment seemed stacked against them, for more than a year, they made the magic happen.

And on what was a magical weekend in Norman with the opening of Love’s Field, the Sooners couldn’t come up with one more magical moment as their comeback bid fell short in the bottom of the eighth.

The letdown of the loss shouldn’t take away from everything they accomplished during the streak. It’s unlikely the softball world will ever witness something like that ever again.

But as they’ve reminded us so many times over the last several years, never doubt the Oklahoma Sooners. They’re capable of accomplishing extraordinary things.

They’re just getting started.

Social media reacts to end of Oklahoma Sooners 71-game winning streak

The Oklahoma Sooners 71-game win streak came to an end in their 7-5 extra innings loss to Louisiana and here’s how social media reacted.

It was an incredible run for the Oklahoma Sooners. Winners of 71 games in a row, the magic ran out in their 7-5 loss to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.

Oklahoma had there chances at the plate to make things happen, but ultimately it was what happened in the circle and when the ball was in play that brought the streak to an end.

The loss comes as a shock, but simply because this team had shown the ability to overcome all obstacles en route to setting a mark that may never be surpassed. The Sooners hadn’t lost in more than a year, dating back to their 4-3 loss to the Baylor Bears in the Dave Getterman Classic last spring.

While any loss is disappointing, it’s hard to feel that way after seeing what this team has accomplished. Not only in the winning streak but over the last three-plus years during their national championship run.

If we know anything about Patty Gasso’s team, it’s they’ll bounce back. They’re a resilient and talented team.

Here’s how social media reacted to Oklahoma’s first loss of the season and the end of their 71-game winning streak.

LSU baseball holds on to take down Louisiana-Lafayette in Astros Foundation Classic

LSU moved to 2-0 in the Astros Foundation Classic on Saturday night.

Game 2 of the Astros Foundation Classic pitted LSU against the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns. [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers in this one as he had a great start.

Jump gave up only one hit and zero runs over five innings of work. Due to his injuries suffered while at UCLA, head coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] is still trying to get Jump back into the swing of things. This was a step in the right direction for him.

Just like Friday night’s game against Texas, runs came at a premium. LSU finally scored in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Tigers plated four runs courtesy of [autotag]Jake Brown[/autotag] scoring on a wild pitch, a [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] two-RBI single, and an RBI double by [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] to put LSU up 4-0.

In the top of the sixth inning, ULL got three of those runs back after a three-run homer off of [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] cut the lead to 4-3. In the bottom of the seventh inning, LSU got some breathing room courtesy of Travinski hitting a solo shot to make the score 5-3 Tigers.

[autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] and [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] did a great job getting the Tigers through the seventh and eighth innings as they pitched 2.1 innings, allowed zero runs, struck out five hitters, and only walked one.

Loer stayed in for the top of the ninth inning as he tried to close it out for LSU. He got a flyout and a strikeout from the first two hitters he faced and then the Ragin’ Cajuns hit a solo homer to cut the lead to one with two outs. The next hitter singled to put the tying run at first. Loer struck the last hitter out and the Tigers won 5-4.

LSU moved to 2-0 in the Astros Foundation Classic. The Tigers will take on Texas State at 3 p.m. CT Sunday as both teams look to go 3-0 in the Classic.

The Oklahoma Sooners extended their win streak to 70 with an 8-0 win over Louisiana.

The Oklahoma Sooners moved to 17-0 with an 8-0 win over the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns in the first of two games on Saturday. OU has now won an incredible 70 games in a row.

[autotag]Kierston Deal[/autotag] got the start and worked four scoreless innings, allowing three hits, two walks, and a hit batter with two strikeouts in the outing. [autotag]Peytn Monticelli[/autotag] came in and threw a scoreless fifth inning to help Oklahoma seal the win.

Oklahoma’s offense got going early with a three-run first inning. [autotag]Alyssa Brito[/autotag], [autotag]Ella Parker[/autotag], and [autotag]Tiare Jennings[/autotag] each had an RBI double in the frame to put the Sooners up early.

The Sooners added four more runs in the second. [autotag]Riley Ludlam[/autotag] led off with a solo home run before Brito doubled home [autotag]Jayda Coleman[/autotag] for her second extra-base hit of the game. Parker walked to load the bases and [autotag]Avery Hodge[/autotag] earned another walk to score [autotag]Riley Boone[/autotag]. [autotag]Tiare Jennings[/autotag] closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to put the Sooners up 7-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, [autotag]Alyssa Brito[/autotag] smashed her third double of the day, and after a passed ball allowed Brito to get to third and eventually scored on [autotag]Maya Bland[/autotag]’s ground out.

The Sooners will take on Liberty in the afternoon part of their Saturday double-header after beating the Flames 8-0 on Friday night.

Instant Analysis: LSU women’s basketball extends winning streak to nine with blowout win over Louisiana

The Tigers were tied at halftime against the Ragin’ Cajuns, but they dominated the second half en route to a 30-point win.

LSU seems to be hitting its stride after suffering a setback in its season-opener, and it has now won nine straight games since after an 83-53 win over Louisiana at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Sunday afternoon.

The final score doesn’t really do justice to how competitive this game was in the first half. The game went to the locker room tied at 28 at halftime, but the Ragin’ Cajuns ran out of steam in the second half.

The third quarter was especially ugly as they were outscored 28-9 by the Tigers, who pulled away after shooting 62.1% in the final 20 minutes.

[autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] once again was the most productive offensive player, leading the way with a 27-point, 10-rebound double-double. [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] came close to a double-double, as well, with 20 points and nine rebounds.

[autotag]Mikaylah Williams[/autotag] did get a double-double, finishing with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. It was an overall dominant game on the inside for LSU, which outrebounded Louisiana 83-53 and scored 36 points in the paint.

After a lengthy break following the top-10 win over Virginia Tech, LSU will have a quick turnaround ahead of its next game as it hosts McNeese at the PMAC on Tuesday night.

Here’s everything you need to know as No. 7 LSU looks to extend its winning streak to nine games.

Big 12 Bowl Projections: Sooners to face incoming and ascending Big 12 squad in Bowl Season

The Oklahoma Sooners will play a future Big 12 member in the latest Bowl Projections from USA TODAY Sports.

The regular season is over, and all that awaits before knowing OU’s bowl destination is championship weekend. The Oklahoma Sooners just missed out on the Big 12 title game. It’s the third season in a row that the Sooners won’t play for the conference title.

Things are improving at Oklahoma, but after running the Big 12 to the tune of 14 conference championships, it stings a bit not to be able to play for one more.

Still, 10-2 is better than 6-6. The Sooners are showing they’re a program on the right track as they get ready for the SEC. Recruiting is better on both sides of the ball and in 2023, we began to see glimpses of Brent Venables’ recruiting classes impacting the game.

In Oklahoma’s bowl game, we’ll likely get to see more of the youth the Sooners have added since Brent Venables’ arrival. Who will they play? Let’s take a look at the latest Big 12 Bowl Projections via USA TODAY Sports.

6-run rally not enough as LSU softball eliminated from Baton Rouge Regional by Louisiana

The Tigers season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday night.

An impressive rally from an early six-run deficit wasn’t enough for the Tigers to keep their season alive on Sunday night. LSU was eliminated from the Baton Rouge Regional with a 9-8 loss to Louisiana, which advances to its first super regional since 2016.

Coach Beth Torina’s team has now missed the super regional round in back-to-back seasons after previously reaching six in a row.

The game started out about as bad as it possibly could have for LSU. After a leadoff single, what should have been a fielder’s choice turned into an error as the Ragin’ Cajuns had runners at the corners.

A wild pitch from [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] allowed a run to score, still with no outs on the board. Berzon then loaded up the bases after issuing back-to-back walks. She got an out on a sacrifice groundout, but a run scored to make the game 2-0.

Another walk reloaded the bases, and then things went from bad to worse as Berzon gave up a grand slam to make it 6-0, still in the first inning. That was all that UL was able to get, but LSU found itself in quite a hole before even coming to the plate.

[autotag]Georgia Clark[/autotag] managed to get one of those runs back, leading off the bottom of the second with a solo home run. LSU was then able to get a rally going in the third.

[autotag]Savannah Stewart[/autotag] and [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] reached on errors, and a single from [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] brought a run home. Clark followed up with a single to score two more after a Louisiana pitching change.

UL walked [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag], and a hard-hit double into the gap from [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] scored two more runs and tied the game at six. That forced a pitching change, but even that couldn’t preserve the lead.

[autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag] hit an RBI single, and the Tigers took a 7-6 advantage. A flyout ended the frame, but the damage was done. At least, for a time.

The Tigers kept the run going in the fourth after a two-out double from Briggs, and Pleasants followed with an RBI single. Louisiana wasn’t going away, though.

Karly Heath hit a solo shot in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to one run, and a single put the tying run aboard. Berzon worked her way out of trouble, though, as the freshman got a groundout to end the threat.

The 8-7 score carried into the top of the seventh with Berzon looking to close things out. She put herself in danger again early on, allowing back-to-back singles. A sacrifice groundout got her a third of the way there, but it also put the go-ahead run in scoring position.

Disaster struck after that. An intentional walk from Berzon veered into the strike zone. Newland wasn’t ready for it behind the plate, and the Ragin’ Cajuns tied the game on a passed ball.

The tie wouldn’t last long. A deep single in the next at-bat scored the go-ahead run. Suddenly, LSU came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh three outs from elimination.

A two-out single from [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] gave the team life and brought the winning run to the plate, but a flyout in foul territory from Stewart ended the game and LSU’s season.

The Tigers finish the year at 42-17.
