Big 12 Bowl Projections: Sooners to face incoming and ascending Big 12 squad in Bowl Season

The Oklahoma Sooners will play a future Big 12 member in the latest Bowl Projections from USA TODAY Sports.

The regular season is over, and all that awaits before knowing OU’s bowl destination is championship weekend. The Oklahoma Sooners just missed out on the Big 12 title game. It’s the third season in a row that the Sooners won’t play for the conference title.

Things are improving at Oklahoma, but after running the Big 12 to the tune of 14 conference championships, it stings a bit not to be able to play for one more.

Still, 10-2 is better than 6-6. The Sooners are showing they’re a program on the right track as they get ready for the SEC. Recruiting is better on both sides of the ball and in 2023, we began to see glimpses of Brent Venables’ recruiting classes impacting the game.

In Oklahoma’s bowl game, we’ll likely get to see more of the youth the Sooners have added since Brent Venables’ arrival. Who will they play? Let’s take a look at the latest Big 12 Bowl Projections via USA TODAY Sports.

PHOTOS: Wisconsin dominates Northwestern 42-7 under HC Jim Leonhard

Some of the best photos from Wisconsin’s 42-7 blowout victory over the Northwestern Wildcats:

The Wisconsin Badgers dominated the Northwestern Wildcats in a 42-7 road victory on Saturday afternoon. The Badgers were led by interim head coach Jim Leonhard after the firing of Paul Chryst last week.

The Wisconsin offense had its best performance of the season because of a career day from junior wide receiver Chimere Dike. He finished the day with 185 receiving yards and three touchdowns on only 10 receptions. His quarterback, Graham Mertz, has a great game as well finishing 20-29 for 299 passing yards and five touchdowns

Their offensive performance was complemented by a dominant defensive effort. Leonhards’ defense racked up three turnovers on the day and limited the Wildcats to 3-13 on third down.

The Badgers will continue their road trip next weekend against the Michigan State Spartans:

Following an outstanding interception by Badgers’ safety Kamo’i Latu, Wisconsin’s offense took advantage on their third drive with a spectacular 52-yard catch and run for a touchdown from wide receiver Chimere Dike. The junior wideout has been outstanding in the first half with six receptions for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

The Badgers have been able to impose their will on the Wildcats so far, up 21-0 in the second quarter, under the direction of interim head coach Jim Leonhard.

How to watch the Wisconsin Badgers against the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday:

The Wisconsin Badgers play the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Badgers are heading on the road this weekend to face the Wildcats after firing head coach Paul Chryst last Sunday. The Badgers will be led by defensive coordinator and interim HC Jim Leonhard. They will need to show more on both sides of the ball after getting blown out by Illinois last weekend.

Hopefully, the Badgers can provide a more balanced attack on offense this week after struggling to run the ball against the Fighting Illini, finishing the game with only two rushing yards on 24 total carries. Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz will also need to be more efficient, after throwing three interceptions in the last two weeks.

Luckily for the Badgers, Northwestern has lost four-straight games and may be the worst team in the Big Ten West this season. It should be exciting to see if Wisconsin can get back to its winning ways under Jim Leonhard against the Wildcats.

The Badgers have had mixed results against the Wildcats in the last 10 years going 6-4, although historically Wisconsin has gone 60-38-5 against them. The Badgers also won the latest matchup, in a 35-7 blowout in November last year. Running back Braelon Allen rushed for 173 and three touchdowns to lead the Badgers to the dominant victory.

Hopefully, this matchup turns out different than the first game between them in 1890, where Wisconsin lost 22-10.

Northwestern Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wildcats miss from the Big Ten East Division?

Northwestern doesn’t catch a whole lot of breaks in interdivisional play. It misses Michigan and Michigan State (good) along with Indiana and Rutgers (bad).

Also bad – Ohio State. At least the Buckeyes come to Evanston, but the Wildcats have to go to Penn State and Maryland. Making matters worse is that those two are sandwiched around the date with Wisconsin.

Northwestern Football Schedule What To Know: Take a long August trip, stay home in September

Not only does Northwestern get to play in Ireland against Nebraska to start the season, but it gets a week off before diving into a light and creamy non-conference run. Duke, Northern Illinois, and Miami University are all home games before diving back into Big Ten play to start October.

And then there’s a problem …

Northwestern Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Yuck.

The regular season finale against Illinois is winnable, but what kind of shape will the Wildcats be in? There isn’t one sure-thing winnable game from October 1st through Thanksgiving.

Yeah, the non-conference slate isn’t any big deal, and yeah, there are plenty of home games to get up to speed, but Northwestern has five road games in seven dates including a brutal second half run of four road games in five around a home game against Ohio State.

Throw in that Nebraska game, and half the season is away from home – that’s not big-time for a Big Ten program.

The Badgers will be without starting running back Chez Mellusi after he suffered a season-ending leg injury in last week’s victory against Rutgers. Northwestern Wildcats College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Northwestern’s 2019 offense was just plain sad. It was among the most inept in college football, was dead-last in passing efficiency, and it averaged 297 yards and 16 points per game. The offensive line play got stronger, the quarterback play was better, and the 2020 version was night-and-day more efficient. It wasn’t that great, but it worked like the Northwestern offense is supposed to – it controlled games.

The rise of Peyton Ramsey had a whole lot to do with that, but he’s done. Out goes the Indiana transfer to the NFL, and in comes South Carolina transfer Ryan Hilinski to battle with former Clemson transfer Hunter Johnson to keep it all going.

Getting WR Stephon Robinson from Kansas is a huge help – he was a nice playmaker in 2019 with over 16 yards per catch and eight scores – but the Wildcats have to replace their top four pass catchers. There’s size, and there’s promise – TE Charlie Mangieri caught a few touchdown passes and Bryce Kirtz is a quick target who can grow into a job – but the corps takes a massive hit.

The running game has found its guy. Cam Porter didn’t do much for most of his freshman season, and then he ripped up Illinois and took over the offense over the last three games. No. 2 back Drake Anderson is leaving for Arizona and Isaiah Bowser is a Miami University RedHawk, but Bowling Green transfer Andrew Clair comes in after running for close to 2,000 yards with 13 scores over the last four years.

Three starters are back on a line that was good enough in pass protection to be a plus. There isn’t a ton of bulk and this group won’t blast away, but it’ll be solid around excellent all-star tackle Peter Skoronski.

A look at the Big Ten sack leaders from 2020

It seems like every football season a strong point of the Big Ten is its tough defenses. This year was no different, as teams like Ohio S…

In a league traditionally known for defense, this year was no different. The Big Ten conference had a number of top defenses as well as dominant pass rushers in 2020. Related: PHOTOS: Wisconsin football’s ninth spring practice of the year

Despite Wisconsin playing fewer games than most of the Big Ten last season, their defense was ranked as one of the best defenses in the country led by linebackers Jack Sanborn and Leo Chenal. In fact, Chenal was the only Badger to crack the top 15 of this list. Luckily, this phenomenal pair of linebackers will be returning to lead the Badger defense this upcoming season.

Below is the ranking of the top 15 players in sacks per game from the Big Ten Conference 2020 season. Players from Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota have all made the rankings.
