UCLA vs Washington Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

There was a problem against Oregon last week in a low scoring loss, but it came back roaring against a weak Oregon State team and rolled 94-55.

The offense hasn’t been consistent, and the threes that were there against the Beavers weren’t there against the Ducks, but the offense continues to be brilliant at not turning the ball over and the shooting is usually fine.

As lost as the O can get to 40% from the field, it’s fine.

UCLA is 17-0 when it gets to 40%, and Washington has only allowed under that eight times.

Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies bounced back fro a rough four-game losing streak with a decent win over Washington State to keep tournament hopes alive – it needs this at home.

The defense is great at forcing mistakes and coming up with takeaways. It has to lead the way to easy points and a whole lot of production on the move.

The Huskies have to shoot well. Even with a strong defense they don’t overcome bad shooting days, and UCLA has allowed seven of the last nine teams to hit 40% or better from the field.

Again, that has to start with the defense and takeaways, but …

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA is one of the stingiest teams in the nation when it comes to turnovers. However, it’s the team’s third straight road game and it’s dealing with a desperate team that has to come up with something splashy.

No, the Bruins aren’t going to roll through Washington like they did against Oregon State, but they won’t be flat in the clutch like they were against Oregon.

Washington will crank up the defensive intensity to stay alive, but it just won’t shoot well enough. It’s struggling to get to 40% on a consistent basis, and it would be nice to get more from three.

UCLA is going to struggle, but it’ll get the one scoring burst needed to survive. It’s not going to give up the turnovers Washington will need.

UCLA vs Washington Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies might have lost three of the last four games, but it’s been decent on the offensive boards and it’s doing okay in the turnover battle.

The offense is relatively careful with the ball and here defense leads the Pac-12 in steals. You can’t hang with UCLA if you give up too many transition points – the Bruins lead the Pac-12 in turnover margin – and that shouldn’t be an issue.

There’s no real worry about getting hit by threes, this isn’t a big UCLA rebounding team, and …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why UCLA Will Win

Washington just doesn’t do enough on the defensive glass and it doesn’t have the scoring pop.

No, it doesn’t turn the ball over, but it doesn’t get that extra pass for easy points, either.

The Huskies have to somehow keep the score low and they have to hit well over 40% of their shots. UCLA’s defense isn’t anything special, but Washington has failed to get to 40% in three of its last four games – losing all three and is 3-9 when it’s under the mark.

But …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Washington will shoot better than 40% and it won’t matter.

UCLA doesn’t turn the ball over enough to give up easy points, it’s going to win the rebounding battle by at least 5 – more like ten – and it’ll get past a sluggish first half to pull away in a workmanlike win coming off the domination of Washington State.

UCLA vs Washington Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Washington just can’t get this season going.

It’s got enough talent to be a whole lot better than 2-3, but it can’t get the running game consistently going, the passing attack didn’t do anything against Oregon State, and the defense hasn’t been able to make up for the problems on the other side.

This is when UCLA needs to crank up the running game.

The Bruins couldn’t run against Fresno State, but they’ve hit 200 yards on the ground against everyone else. They’re 4-0 when running for over 200 and 0-2 when getting to 200 or under. Washington’s run D really is good, but Michigan was able to tear off 343 yards and Oregon State came up wit 242.

The Bruins should be a little more balanced than the Wolverines and Beavers were, but the ground attack should work.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington Will Win

Washington has a good enough secondary to potentially make the Bruins one-dimensional.

UCLA’s perfect world is to get to 200 yards both rushing and passing as it keeps the Dawg defense on its heels. For all of the problems, though, Washington has helped three of the last four teams – including Michigan and Oregon State – to under 50% completion rate. It gave up two touchdown passes to Cal’s Chase Garbers, and that’s it – the secondary locked down against everyone else and has four picks in the last three games.

To keep on this, Washington really is better than it has shown so far. The offense needs to start blasting away a bit to control the game and the clock a bit better, and if it can get up early and make the Bruins throw, again, that goes to the team’s strength.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Is this when Washington makes the pivot and gets its season going?

It’s had two weeks off to rest up after the tough loss to Oregon State, and UCLA has to go on the road for the third time in four weeks. At home, it’ll put up enough of a fight on both sides of the ball to keep this close late, but it’ll have to hold on for dear life as the UCLA offense has a few late chances to pull the game out of the fire.

The Washington defense will come up with the stops needed to get the win it has to have.
