Washington guard Koren Johnson commits to Louisville

Washington Huskies guard Koren Johnson has become the latest to commit to Pat Kelsey’s new-look Louisville team.

The Washington Huskies have officially lost the final Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year.

Koren Johnson, who entered the transfer portal on March 15 following the dismissal of coach Mike Hopkins, had initially left the door open for a return to the Huskies when he included Washington in his top five in late March.

But it was a school from outside his top 5 of Washington, Florida, Indiana, Oregon, and UCLA that ended up landing Johnson, who committed to Louisville on Monday.

Louisville hired coach Pat Kelsey last week from Charleston after firing Kenny Payne following a two-season tenure, sparking a new wave of recruiting out of the historically successful program.

Washington secured a commitment from Rice transfer Mekhi Mason in early April, making Johnson’s path to playing time perhaps muddier than he would have preferred. The Huskies have also been active in recruiting other guards in the portal, namely BYU’s Dallin Hall, which may have been a signal that Johnson was not going to return.

USC beats Washington in first round of Pac-12 Tournament, gives itself a chance

USC’s season continues for at least one more day. Can the Trojans make it three more days? We’ll find out soon enough.

The USC Trojans prolonged their season by one game. They hope they can continue to extend their season throughout the week in Las Vegas at the Pac-12 Tournament. USC beat Washington on Wednesday in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament. The 80-74 win sends the Trojans into the quarterfinals on Thursday at noon Pacific time against top-seeded Arizona.

This game against Washington was close all the way. Washington managed a five-point lead at 59-54 with just over eight minutes left in regulation, and the Trojans were in trouble. Then they responded.

USC produced a 10-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to grab a 69-64 lead near the 5:30 mark. Washington tied the game at 65, but the 10-0 run stabilized the game for USC and rescued the Trojans from an alarming situation. UW’s Sahvir Wheeler fouled USC’s Bronny James on a 3-point shot attempt with 3:29 left. Bronny made all three foul shots to give USC a 68-65 lead. The Trojans built their lead to two possessions and led by at least four points for the rest of the game, which ends Washington’s season and also coach Mike Hopkins’ tenure in Seattle. Hopkins will not be retained, and UW will begin its search for a new head coach.

USC was led by 25 points from Boogie Ellis. Isaiah Collier handed out 7 assists. Kobe Johnson did a little of everything for the Trojans, scoring 14 points, grabbing 8 boards, handing out 4 assists, and collecting 3 steals. USC shot 50 percent from the field, 28 of 56.

USC hangs on to beat Washington despite squandering another commanding lead

USC allowed another late-game run, but it stabilized before it was too late.

The USC Trojans beat the Washington Huskies, 82-75, on Saturday. They have won the last eight meetings in the series. USC has struggled mightily on the road this season, it was just 2-9 coming into this game on the road this season.

Injuries stunted Isaiah Collier’s development in 2024, but he has been unstoppable the last three games, scoring a career-high 31 points in this game in Seattle. Collier continues to elevate above college competition, it’s clear the learning curve is far behind him offensively.  Collier going “Kobe” and carrying the Trojans on his back is becoming a regular occurrence.

USC shot no free throws in the first half. UW is one of the worst teams in fouling in the Pac-12, but had only three fouls in the first half. The Trojans didn’t get to the line. Andy Enfield talked to the officials at the half.

USC led by a large margin with roughly 4:30 left in regulation, but Washington made a big push, forcing USC to sweat the last 90 seconds. USC has allowed runs late in halves and games all season.

“We’ve had self inflicted wounds late in games this year. We turned it over three times in 1:20 up 15 with six to play in the game,” Enfield said.

USC stabilized in the final moments of the game to preserve the win. A Josh Morgan block secured a Trojan victory in the last half-minute. D.J. Rodman knocked down two free throws to make it a three-possession game with 12 seconds to go. The Trojans got out of Seattle with a win and a split of their Washington road trip.

Breaking: Paul Mulcahy commits out of the transfer portal to the Washington Huskies

Paul Mulcahy is officially leaving Rutgers and joining Washington.

Paul Mulcahy, who spent the last four years at Rutgers basketball, committed to the Washington Huskies on Tuesday. Mulcahy had entered the transfer portal last month.

The starting guard for Rutgers the past three seasons, Mulcahy made 121 appearances and 91 starts during his four seasons at Rutgers. He finished his career averaging 6.8 points and 3. assists per game.

All of his starts came in his final three seasons with the Scarlet Knights.

Last year while playing with an injured shoulder, Mulcahy averaged 8.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

This past season, Washington went 16-16 (8-12 Pac 12). They had some narrow losses to ranked teams including 70-67 at No. 5 Arizona in early January and then a nine-point loss at No. 9 UCLA in early February.

Mulcahy brings instant leadership to a team that is looking to take the next step this season and potentially play in the postseason. His court presence and leadership will be welcome to the Huskies locker room.

In addition, his mid-range jump shot and ability to post up will help Washington on the offensive end.

Pac-12 women’s basketball report: Stanford stunned, Utah ties for first

Stanford’s loss to Washington abruptly turned the Pac-12 race. Utah’s title odds have risen, and Colorado is back in the hunt.

The Stanford Cardinal lost to USC three weeks ago, but had not lost a game since then. The Cardinal were still leading the Pac-12 standings heading into their Sunday game in Seattle against the Washington Huskies. USC won in Seattle two weeks ago, but it wasn’t easy. The Trojans had to battle into overtime to finish off UW.

The Huskies haven’t thrived in the Pac-12 this season, but they have been consistently competitive. Stanford was fully expected to win, but Washington was going to make the Trees earn it.

Washington picked quite a time to break through and play crunch-time minutes better than it had at any previous point this year.

Washington had come up short in OT against USC, late in regulation against UCLA, and against other high-profile opponents. On this day, however, the Huskies stacked together several late-game defensive stops. They also crashed the boards and scored 30 points in the second quarter after an eight-point first quarter. Trailing 65-63 with 3:19 left, they scored the next eight points and earned a 72-67 win.

Washington finished plus-10 in rebounds and allowed only two offensive boards to Stanford’s powerful front line. A team which had knocked on the door but hadn’t busted through finally crossed the threshold …

much as USC finally broke through against the same Stanford team after losing twice to UCLA by a combined total of four points.

Stanford’s loss to Washington, combined with Utah’s win at Oregon on Sunday, pushed the Utes into a first-place tie with the Cardinal. Colorado swept the Oregon schools as well to be one game back.

It’s a three-team race again after it seemed Stanford and Utah were separating from the pack.

Stanford goes to Colorado and Utah on the final weekend of the regular season in late February. Those two games are likely to decide the 2023 Pac-12 champion.

USC thrives late in regulation, beats Washington to move to 11-3 for the season

The Trojans didn’t allow a field goal in a nearly 9-minute stretch late in the game. That and 27 Boogie Ellis points were enough to win. USC is 3-0 in #Pac12 play.

The USC Trojans had everything going their way midway through the second half of Friday night’s Pac-12 Conference game against the Washington Huskies. USC led 53-46 with 12:45 left. The Trojans were getting the shots they wanted against Washington’s defense. They were preventing the Huskies from being comfortable at the offensive end of the floor. USC was generating balanced scoring, with several different players scoring seven or more points.

Then it happened. It happens in nearly every USC game against a non-cream puff opponent.

For several minutes, the Trojans go through a lull in which they turn the ball over, they lose track of an opponent’s hot shooter, and they struggle to score.

It happened against Washington: USC allowed a 12-2 Husky run and fell behind 58-55 with 10 minutes left. The Trojans do not have a large margin for error right now. They have to build their resume and create a cushion. They don’t currently have one in the pursuit of an NCAA Tournament bid. It was essential to at least split these games in the state of Washington, and it would have been extremely concerning if the Trojans had to go to Pullman on Sunday having to win just to get a split. They needed a win in Seattle to create the possibility of a road sweep, which would put this team in a much better position to get an NCAA bid.

The Trojans got the job done, turning things around in the final 10 minutes to win 80-67. Here are some relevant notes on how they pulled through against Washington:

UCLA vs Washington Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

There was a problem against Oregon last week in a low scoring loss, but it came back roaring against a weak Oregon State team and rolled 94-55.

The offense hasn’t been consistent, and the threes that were there against the Beavers weren’t there against the Ducks, but the offense continues to be brilliant at not turning the ball over and the shooting is usually fine.

As lost as the O can get to 40% from the field, it’s fine.

UCLA is 17-0 when it gets to 40%, and Washington has only allowed under that eight times.

Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies bounced back fro a rough four-game losing streak with a decent win over Washington State to keep tournament hopes alive – it needs this at home.

The defense is great at forcing mistakes and coming up with takeaways. It has to lead the way to easy points and a whole lot of production on the move.

The Huskies have to shoot well. Even with a strong defense they don’t overcome bad shooting days, and UCLA has allowed seven of the last nine teams to hit 40% or better from the field.

Again, that has to start with the defense and takeaways, but …

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA is one of the stingiest teams in the nation when it comes to turnovers. However, it’s the team’s third straight road game and it’s dealing with a desperate team that has to come up with something splashy.

No, the Bruins aren’t going to roll through Washington like they did against Oregon State, but they won’t be flat in the clutch like they were against Oregon.

Washington will crank up the defensive intensity to stay alive, but it just won’t shoot well enough. It’s struggling to get to 40% on a consistent basis, and it would be nice to get more from three.

UCLA is going to struggle, but it’ll get the one scoring burst needed to survive. It’s not going to give up the turnovers Washington will need.

UCLA vs Washington Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies might have lost three of the last four games, but it’s been decent on the offensive boards and it’s doing okay in the turnover battle.

The offense is relatively careful with the ball and here defense leads the Pac-12 in steals. You can’t hang with UCLA if you give up too many transition points – the Bruins lead the Pac-12 in turnover margin – and that shouldn’t be an issue.

There’s no real worry about getting hit by threes, this isn’t a big UCLA rebounding team, and …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why UCLA Will Win

Washington just doesn’t do enough on the defensive glass and it doesn’t have the scoring pop.

No, it doesn’t turn the ball over, but it doesn’t get that extra pass for easy points, either.

The Huskies have to somehow keep the score low and they have to hit well over 40% of their shots. UCLA’s defense isn’t anything special, but Washington has failed to get to 40% in three of its last four games – losing all three and is 3-9 when it’s under the mark.

But …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Washington will shoot better than 40% and it won’t matter.

UCLA doesn’t turn the ball over enough to give up easy points, it’s going to win the rebounding battle by at least 5 – more like ten – and it’ll get past a sluggish first half to pull away in a workmanlike win coming off the domination of Washington State.

USC vs Washington Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

It’s just this simple with Washington …

When it shoots well, it wins. When it doesn’t shoot well, it doesn’t.

Of course all teams are better when they make baskets, but the Huskies don’t have the ability to pick up the slack when they’re not on from the field. However, they’re 8-0 when making 42% or more of their passes and 1902 when the hit 40% or more.

And the offense travels. The team is only 5-5 away from Seattle, but the shooting and easy points are there.

No, they don’t move the ball around well and they don’t shoot enough threes, but they come up with a whole lot of takeaways and generate a whole slew of transition points – hence the better field goal percentage in wins.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why USC Will Win

Washington, meet the USC defense.

The Trojans might not be a high-powered scoring machine, but they’re amazing at keeping offenses from finding easy points on the inside. They’ll give up a few threes, but miss, and the possession is over – they’re fantastic on the boards.

Washington isn’t a good enough rebounding team to make this a half court fight. It’s the worst team in the Pac-12 in rebounding margin – USC should be at least a +10 there.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Washington might pose a wee bit of a problem.

USC doesn’t turn the ball over enough to help the Huskies, but it’s not going to crank things up to run away with this.

Will the Huskies be able to take advantage of a few USC offensive lulls? Will USC be on letdown alert after the big win over UCLA?

Yeah, but not enough, and sort of, but not as much as Washington needs.
