Why Ohio State Will Win

CJ Stroud got back on track after the 21-7 windstorm win against Northwestern.

He got time to work, threw for almost 300 yards with five scores against Indiana, and it all came together in an easy win. There shouldn’t be problems against the Maryland defense, either, but it’s the other side of the ball that should dominate.

It was just Indiana – it’s struggling to do much of anything consistently well – but Ohio State made it six times in seven games allowing fewer than 300 yards of total offense.

The seventh-best defense in the country has enough of a pass rush to get through a struggling Maryland offensive line, the secondary should be able to keep Taulia Tagovailoa’s struggles going, and it should all tie in with a balanced day from the offense.

Does Ohio State have any running backs left?

Star back TreyVeon Henderson is trying to get back from a foot injury, and Miyan Williams suffered a leg injury last week against Indiana. Dallan Hayden was able to step in and run for over 100 yards, and it’s Ohio State – there are other options – but it’s still not a plus to not have the headliners.

This is a focus game. Maryland might not be playing all that well lately, but it’s bowl eligible, it’s the final home game of the year, and it can let it rip.

Meanwhile, the other side is this close from getting its shot at redemption against Michigan next week.

Ohio State will take care of business.

It can lose this and still get into the College Football Playoff with two straight wins. That’s not going to happen, though.

Ohio State is too good at both ends of the floor on the inside.

It’s second in the Big Ten in shooting percentage, it’s doing a nice job from the outside, and the defense is solid at generating blocked shots and is okay on the defensive boards.

Maryland will shoot plenty of threes, but it doesn’t make enough of them and the defense has a hard time getting out and forcing mistakes and stopping threes.

The Terps have allowed 40% shooting or better in each of the last eight games and are getting bombed on too easily at times. Ohio State wasn’t on from the outside against Iowa, but it’s been effective against everyone else over the last month.

Why Maryland Will Win

Maryland won’t have to worry about turnovers or mistakes, and the defense should be better than it was the first time around.

The Buckeyes hit over 50% from the field and made 11 threes, and that’s almost certainly not happening again. The Terp offense failed to get to 40% from the field, but if the attack can force its way to the free throw line it’ll have a shot.

Ohio State’s defense might be decent overall, but it doesn’t force mistakes. Maryland should be able to attack the rim, and even if it doesn’t generate points, it should get fouled enough to matter.

Ohio State is shooting too well.

Maryland needs to own the free throw line – it’s great when it gets there – but the Buckeyes have been a machine lately with 71 free throw attempts over the last three games.

Maryland needs to make lots and lots of free throws along with making 45% of its shots from the field.

Maryland’s been on a rough run – it can’t seem to buy too many breaks – but the defense hasn’t been all that bad.

The rebounding at times has been strong, and the three-point defense is solid, and now it all has to come together against a team that should be a tad rusty.

After all of the weather problems over the last week, the Buckeyes haven’t plays since January 30th and haven’t won a game since the 27th. They might be rested, but considering they weren’t hot from the outside over the last few games against Big Ten teams, the Terp defense has to be on from the start.

Maryland is hitting its shots from the field and it’s not enough. It has to be doing everything right on the inside and can’t miss its free throws because the overall scoring punch just isn’t there.

It’s a bit by design – this isn’t a team that’s going to race up and down the court – but the scoring just isn’t there. It’s a struggle to get to 70 – it hasn’t done it more than twice since December.

Ohio State might not have been red hot before the week off, but in general it’s a strong shooting team that can work inside and out. It’s the second-best shooting team in the Big Ten, and it should be able to find ways to get past one of he nation’s best scoring defenses.

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State has to be patient.

It’s going to want to get up and go against a Terp team that does a whole lot of things right, and that includes keeping games in the 60s and under.

Can the Buckeyes get to 70? Maryland is 0-9 when it doesn’t get to 68 points,  and Ohio State is 11-1 when it scores more than 68.

It’s going to be a fight to get points, but the Buckeyes will go on a little burst in the second half to finally start getting control. Maryland won’t hit its free throws when it counts.

Why Maryland Will Win

The Friday night game against Iowa last week didn’t represent Maryland’s best work.

The Terps were stomped 51-14 with little offensive production, too many mistakes, and too much pressing against a team good enough to now be ranked third in the country.

Seven turnovers and ten penalties generally aren’t going to get it done.

However, the passing game should work a whole lot better this week. Yeah, the Buckeyes destroyed Rutgers, but the secondary can be pushed a bit. Tulsa’s Davis Brin put up over 400 yards, and everyone but Akron has hit the 200-yard mark through the air.

Taulia Tagovailoa wasn’t under any real pressure against the Hawkeyes – he was going against a D that’s taking the ball away in bunches. This week should be a 300-yard game as long as the offense can settle down just a bit, and if the Terp pass rush can set an early tone by pressuring CJ Stroud.

Now that’s more like it.

Ohio State has the talent to beat teams 52-13 like it did to Rutgers last Saturday, but now it needs to do it on a consistent basis.

The defense is going to be the defense – it’s just not going to be a brick wall this season. However, it made up for the issues with three key takeaways to turn what should’ve been a tight game into a rout.

Maryland was having a few turnover issues before the seven-giveaway debacle against Iowa – turning it over twice against both Kent State and Illinois – and the defense has only forced three takeaways in the last four games.

More than that, Maryland has yet to deal with any passing games to worry about. That’s about to change, because …

CJ Stroud has been better than you think.

He’s still learning, and he’s still not quite razor-sharp, but he came back from the week off against Akron to hit 74% of his passes for 330 yards and five touchdowns against Rutgers. In this, he’ll have to keep pressing a bit thanks to his defense that will give up over 400 yards, but he’ll be fine.

The Terps will bounce back a bit. The downfield passing game will do enough to keep up for a while – Maryland will be up in the first quarter – but the Ohio State machine will pull away midway through the second half.

Justin Fields was supposed to be great, but … this?

Beyond brilliant, he has thrown 11 incompletions in two games, and 11 touchdown passes, hitting 87% of his throws for 908 yards, no picks, and with two rushing scores.

For all of the good things Maryland has done so far, its run defense was rocked by Northwestern and Minnesota, and the secondary was hit by Penn State for 340 yards. Fields and Ohio State should be able to move the ball however they want to.

Maryland is going fast, fast, fast, but that means it never has the ball. The offense has only had control for just over 25 minutes a game, Ohio State keeps it for almost 34 minutes per game, and that’s going to matter.

The Buckeyes will be able to slow things down if needed. The Terps can’t.

Why Maryland Will Win

Apparently, Taulia Tagovailoa’s performance against Minnesota was no fluke.

He led the comeback over the Gophers with 394 passing yards and three scores and two rushing touchdowns, and followed it up with 282 yards and three passing scores against Penn State. When the Maryland offense works, the big plays are happening down the field.

Penn State and Rutgers were able to throw on the Buckeye secondary. Even if the production came late – for the most part – when the outcome was already decided, it’s possible to connect on enough big plays to stay alive.

Maryland has the offense to make this a whole lot of fun, but …

Ohio State has a pass rush.

It might not have Chase Young around anymore, but the Buckeyes still lead the Big Ten in sacks. The biggest key against Penn State, though, were the takeaways, coming up with three turnovers while not giving the ball away.

Ohio State has turned it over twice in three games. It’s not going to give Maryland enough easy moments to capitalize on as it gets up early and coasts. However, the Terps will score enough late to at least keep the final score from being a total wipeout.
