Northwestern’s Chris Collins had a beautiful message for star Boo Buie after his final college game

What a heartwarming moment for Northwestern.

There is a cruel but inevitable reality to March Madness: only one team gets to cut the nets.

And only one team gets to really celebrate with its seniors. But this didn’t stop Northwestern’s Chris Collins from honoring one of the more important players in the history of the men’s program in the best way.

As No. 1 Uconn capped off a cruising second-round win over the Wildcats, Collins subbed out star Boo Buie with the intention of giving him a well-deserved curtain call in his last college game. And when Buie met Collins on the sideline, the Northwestern coach shared a heartfelt message about everything they’d been through together:

That is what it’s all about. Finding moments of joy and celebration, even when you’re not the last team standing.

Northwestern’s Chris Collins let off a fiery rant at refs before diabolically pumping up Purdue’s crowd after his ejection

Chris Collins unleashed verbal fury then promptly walked off the court like nothing happened.

Northwestern head coach Chris Collins was ejected with less than two seconds of a tight overtime matchup with Purdue, and it’s as wild as it sounds.

Northwestern has a history with Purdue. In back-to-back seasons, the Wildcats have upset Purdue when the team is ranked No. 1. It’s pretty clear that the Wildcats have the Boilermakers’ number.

When another matchup between these teams was on the schedule, Northwestern’s head coach, Chris Collins, knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Right on cue, the game on Wednesday was an overtime thriller thanks to a timely Boo Buie bucket just as regulation ended.

But the real fireworks came after Purdue pulled away in overtime. With just seconds to go, Collins came unglued on the sidelines.

After the game, Collins explained why he unraveled in the best way possible. It was a theatrical masterclass.

Rutgers basketball loses yet again as their season is on the brink.

Sloppy, disjointed and at times a bit out of control, Rutgers basketball continued their nasty slide to end the regular season with a 65-53 loss to Northwestern. Rutgers has now lost six of their last eight games heading into this week’s Big Ten Tournament.

With the loss, Rutgers finishes the regular season 18-13 (10-10). They are the ninth seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

Up 10-3 at the 15:19 mark of the first half, Rutgers went cold on the offensive end and simply couldn’t figure out how to consistently stop Northwestern. After a slow start, the Wildcats went in a 19-4 run to stake out a 22-14 lead late in the first half. Rutgers would hang tight at times but was routinely down double digits in the second half.

Rutgers struggled offensively, unable to penetrate and taking poor perimeter shots. On defense, the hallmark of the program under head coach Steve Pikiell, Rutgers consistently overpursued and at times played recklessly as they chased the game.

Badgers lose close game to Northwestern on Monday

Wisconsin lost to Northwestern 66-63 on Monday after the game was postponed and rescheduled following a COVID-19 outbreak on the Wildcats.

After the game was postponed a couple days following a COVID-19 outbreak on the Wildcats, Wisconsin returned to action Monday following a six-day break between contests, falling to Northwestern 66-63 on the road.

The Badgers couldn’t hit their shots Monday, shooting just 38.6% from the field compared to the Wildcats’ 43.1%. The team was also inefficient from the free-throw line, going 9-for-16 (56.3%) from the charity stripe.

Chucky Hepburn in particular struggled Monday, scoring 12 points while going 4-for-16 from the field, but he did convert three three-pointers on nine attempts.

For Northwestern, they were led by senior guard Boo Buie, who produced 20 points (7-15 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 5-6 FT), seven rebounds and five assists over 37 minutes.

One bright spot for Wisconsin in Monday’s defeat was their ability to distribute the ball to one another, compiling 16 assists compared to the Wildcats’ nine. Another positive was the performance of Jordan Davis, scoring a team-high 15 points (6-10 FG, 3-6 3Pt).

The Badgers’ loss dropped the team to 12-6 on the season and 4-4 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin will return to action Wednesday to face Maryland (12-7) on the road.

Northwestern improved to 13-5 with the win and are now 4-3 in conference games. The Wildcats will play Nebraska (10-10) in Lincoln on Wednesday.

2 Northwestern basketball players engaged in hilariously painful friendly fire

Ouch!

These two Northwestern basketball players engaged in one of the most painful examples of friendly fire you could come up with.

During the Wildcats’ Monday night tilt with Wisconsin, Northwestern senior forward Robbie Beran had to contort his body a bit to snag a rebound. However, his foot flew in the air during the board attempt and landed right in the groin of his teammate, senior guard Boo Buie.

As you could imagine, getting a swift kick to the, erm, lower body is just not what anyone wants to experience during a basketball game, particularly when it comes from a teammate.

Ouch. We’re sure that Beran and Buie will be laughing about this later, but in the moment, it’s not the kind of encounter you want to have with your fellow Wildcat.

Northwestern edged Wisconsin during the contest, 66-63. That’s likely to take out some of the sting of Buie’s injury … well, y’know, as much as it can.

Badgers guard ruled out Monday versus Northwestern

The Badgers will be without a starting guard Monday versus Northwestern as Max Klesmit will be forced to sit out with an upper body injury.

The Badgers are set to return to action Monday on the road versus Northwestern at 5:30 PM, but the team will be without junior guard Max Klesmit in the contest. Klesmit has been ruled out with an upper body injury, which is likely a result of the blow to the head that he suffered in Wisconsin’s 63-60 win over Penn State on Tuesday.

Klesmit was limited to just 10 minutes of action versus the Nittany Lions and will now be forced to miss at least one game as a result of his injury. In his place, junior Jordan Davis will likely return to the starting lineup after heading to the bench for the first time Tuesday.

Wisconsin comes into Monday’s matchup with Northwestern at a 12-5 record and 4-3 in the Big Ten, while the Wildcats are also 12-5 but carry a 3-3 conference record so far.

Badgers fall short of Top 25 in USA Today Coaches Poll

Wisconsin was left off of the Top 25 in this week’s USA Today Coaches Poll, earning 17 votes and landing on the outside looking in.

As the Week 12 results of the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll came out Monday, the Badgers were absent from the Top 25. The team did however garner 17 votes, leaving them in the bubble just outside of the list.

The USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll top 10 for this week includes Texas(10), Kansas(9), Arizona(8), UCLA(7), Virginia(6), Kansas State(5), Tennessee(4), Houston(3), Alabama(2), Purdue(1).

Wisconsin is coming off of a 63-60 win over Penn State on Tuesday, improving to 12-5 on the season. With the return of Tyler Wahl (ankle) to the lineup, the Badgers were able to snap a three-game skid, improving to 12-2 on the campaign with the senior forward on the court.

Greg Gard and his squad were originally set to play Northwestern on Saturday, but the game was pushed to 5:30 PM on Monday night after the Wildcats had an outbreak of COVID-19 within their program.

After Monday’s road matchup, Wisconsin will travel to face Maryland on Wednesday before returning home to face Illinois on Saturday to wrap up their week.

The Badgers would have a real shot at cracking the Top 25 next week if they’re able to produce an undefeated week.

Wisconsin versus Northwestern rescheduled for Monday

After the game was postponed Saturday, Wisconsin will now take on Northwestern in Big Ten road matchup Monday at 5:30 PM.

After the game was originally supposed to be played Saturday, the Badgers will now face off with Northwestern on the road at 5:30 PM on Monday. The contest was pushed back two days as a result of a COVID-19 outbreak within the Wildcats’ program, but it will ultimately take place now just a couple days later.

Both teams will come into the contest with a 12-5 overall record while the Badgers have a slight edge with a 4-3 Big Ten record versus Northwestern’s 3-3 mark to this point.

Wisconsin beat Penn State 63-60 in Tyler Wahl’s return to the lineup Tuesday following a three-game absence with an ankle injury. The Badgers lost all three contests without the senior forward, but with the victory over the Nittany Lions, the team improved to 12-2 with him on the court this season.

For Northwestern, Monday’s matchup will be their first contest since they lost to Michigan 85-78 last Sunday (Jan. 15).

Saturday’s matchup with Northwestern postponed

As a result of Northwestern’s COVID-19 outbreak, the Badgers contest against the Wildcats has been postponed to an undetermined later date.

Wisconsin (12-5) was set to take on Northwestern (12-5) on the road Saturday, but the game has now been postponed to an undetermined later date as the Wildcats continue to deal with a COVID-19 outbreak within their program.

As a result of the postponement, the Badgers will return to the court Wednesday (Jan. 25) to face Maryland (12-6)  in College Park. Wisconsin will look to take advantage of some added rest, getting eight days of off following their 63-60 win over Penn State at the Kohl Center.

For Northwestern, the postponement was their second consecutive, last playing Jan. 15 versus Michigan. The team is tentatively set to play next Tuesday in Lincoln against Nebraska (10-9) if they can clear COVID-19 protocols by then.
