According to the final Coaches rankings, how do the programs rank all-time, by decade, and by era? Which ones were the best over the 1990s?

Take all the Coaches Poll final rankings and use our CFN scoring system – the AP final regular season No. 1 gets 25 points, the No. 2 team 24, No. 3 23, and so on down to the bottom.

This was the decade that saw one massive pivot that distinguished the Coaches Poll from the AP Poll. The AP college basketball poll has always finished up at the end of the regular season. The Coaches Poll switched to delivering its final top 25 rankings at the end of the NCAA Tournament after the 1990-1991 campaign.

That means from 1992 on, the Coaches Poll turns out to be far more representative of the two polls when it comes to judging a season in its entirety. On the flip side, now everything is about the NCAA Tournament when it comes to the top two – for good and for bad.

According to the final Coaches Poll rankings, how do the programs rank all-time, by decade, and by era? Which ones were the best over the 2010s?

Take all the Coaches Poll final rankings and use our CFN scoring system – the Coaches national champion gets 25 points, the No. 2 team 24, No. 3 23, and so on down to the bottom.

So this decade is a tad bizarre.

UConn, Duke, and Villanova all won two national titles, and Kansas didn’t win any. However. the Jayhawks were consistent enough to end up as the top program of the decade, even though the Coaches polls – unlike the AP versions – came out after the NCAA Tournament.

According to the final Coaches rankings, how do the programs rank all-time, by decade, and by era? Which ones were the best over the 2000s?

Take all the Coaches final rankings and use our CFN scoring system – the Coaches final regular season No. 1 gets 25 points, the No. 2 team 24, No. 3 23, and so on down to the bottom.

Duke ended up on top of the Coaches rankings for the decade even though it won one national title. It was a decade of outliers with Syracuse, Michigan State, and Maryland all taking away an NCAA title, but it was Florida that was the star for a two year back-to-back stretch in a short run of brilliance that’s been a tad underappreciated ever since.

As noted throughout all of these rankings, the Coaches final top 25 came out at the end of the regular season and before the NCAA Tournaments.

The COVID year of 2020 meant no one got a true national championship, but  the Coaches Poll liked Kansas. The national title in 2022 certainly helped crank up the ranking so far, but even without getting a championship, Gonzaga has been the most consistent power program.

Take all the Coaches final rankings and use our CFN scoring system – the Coaches final No. 1 team gets 25 points, the No. 2 team 24, No. 3 23, and so on down to the bottom.

The Coaches Poll didn’t start coming out with its final rankings after the NCAA Tournament until after the 1991 season, so there are a whole slew of issues with this decade.

1985 Villanova and 1988 Kansas – both won national titles – don’t get any love in this formula.
