Kansas State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcats continue to give it a push.

They’re struggling overall defensively, but they’re bombing away with the most threes in the Big 12 and with the best defense against the three. They always have a puncher’s chance.

This isn’t going to be a shootout – Texas Tech won’t allow it. So if Kansas State can be decent from the outside and get to the free throw line – it’s not bad when it gets its chances – it can keep this close.

Texas Tech isn’t all that strong from the free throw line, it’s not all that great from three and it’s not totally dominant at stopping the three. And …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raider defense is a rock.

No, it doesn’t shut down teams cold from the outside, but it’s always a grind to generate points against the pressure and style.

TCU was able to win 69-66 at home, but it had to hit half of its shots to do it. Oklahoma won at home against the Red Raiders a few weeks ago, but it had to make 49% of its shots to do it.

It’s possible to beat Texas Tech without going off from the field, but that’s not happening lately. It’s going to take a phenomenal shooting day for Kansas State to make this a fight.

Kansas State is the second-worst shooting team in the Big 12 making 42% of its shots.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech doesn’t lose at home.

It’s 5-7 on the road, but the team takes things up to a whole other level at United Supermarkets going 17-0.

These two played in mid-January up in Manhattan, and Texas Tech rolled 62-51 with the defense stopping the Wildcats from the outside. The D will come up with a big performance at home.

Kansas State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

Can the running game get going again?

It’s not all that hard with Kansas State. It has to be in control of games by running the ball, it can’t rely on the passing attacks, and it has to keep things moving to help a defense that’s bad on third downs.

Texas Tech doesn’t care about the time of possession, and that’s Step One for the Wildcats. Step Two is to make sure that ball control matters by running and running some more, and Texas Tech allowed over 300 rushing yards in two of the last four games.

Kansas State is 3-0 when running for 200 yards, and 0-3 when going under.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Back to the third down thing – Kansas State has a hard time getting its defense off the field.

The offense doesn’t control third downs as much as it has to with a defense that allows offenses to convert 45% of their chances. After doing a good job early, K-State has allowed teams to convert 47% or more of their tries in each of the last four games.

The Texas Tech offense is a tad hit-or-miss, but when it converts its third down chances – it connected on 9-of-11 in the win over Kansas and it good on 49% of its chances on the year – it wins. The team is 4-0 when getting to 40%, and 0-2 when it doesn’t.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech will hit its third down conversions.

The offense has started to run better. The passing game is still the main mode of transportation, but the offense has mixed it up a bit over the last two weeks with Henry Colombi under center with over 200 yards on the ground.

It’ll be a fun back-and-forth game with the home side being a bit more effective and stronger at doing what it does.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Alan Bowman is back, but he’s not alone.

This isn’t the normal Texas Tech offense that wings it around the yard 60 times. It’s the Texas Tech offense that wings it around 52 times a game, but there’s a decent running game to go along with the all the big throws.

RB SaRodorck Thompson has been terrific, running for over 100 yards and two scores in each of the two games while also being used a bit as a receiver out of the backfield.

Bowman was hurt in each of the last two seasons, but the sophomore QB has been good so far and should be able to bomb away on a Kansas State defense that was ripped apart through the air by both Arkansas State and Oklahoma. However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcats are picking off passes and making big plays. There weren’t enough of them against Arkansas State – the secondary gave up five touchdown passes – but the three picks of Spencer Rattler in the win over Oklahoma made all the difference.

Bowman has been strong so far for the Red Raiders, but he has thrown four picks – granted one was in desperation in the overtime loss to Texas – and he wasn’t razor-sharp last week.

On the offensive side. Skylar Thompson threw for 334 yards last week, was in command when he needed to be, and he’s playing like the veteran starter he is. He’s been great against the Red Raiders over the last two years.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Kansas State secondary at least hold serve?

It’s going to get hit for over 300 yards through the air, but the defense will own the turnover battle. The team is +6 in turnover margin with no giveaways so far.

Kansas State at Texas Tech odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Kansas State Wildcats at Texas Tech Red Raiders sports betting odds and lines, with college football picks and bets.

The Kansas State Wildcats (6-4, 3-4, Big 12) and Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-6, 2-5) square off Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. As the Red Raiders try to keep their flickering bowl hopes alive, K-State is already qualified for the postseason but looks to improve its standing and potential payout. We analyze the Kansas State-Texas Tech odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Kansas State at Texas Tech: Three things you need to know

1. The Wildcats have covered the spread in seven of 10 games overall, and they’re 4-1 ATS across the past five. They fell 24-20 at West Virginia last week for their first non-cover since Oct. 5.

2. K-State leading rusher RB James Gilbert (ankle) is listed as questionable due to an ankle ailment. He has a team-high 618 yards and six scores. If he cannot go, RBs Jordon Brown (53-264-3) and Harry Trotter (64-258-3) are next men up.

3. Kansas State ranks 29th in the nation against the pass (198.7 yards per game) and 33rd in points allowed (21.4), while Texas Tech is 14th nationally with 311.6 passing yards per game and 49th in the country with 31.5 points per game.

Prediction

Kansas State 34, Texas Tech 29

Moneyline (ML)

With or without Gilbert, KANSAS STATE (+110) has enough depth to get it done on the road. Plus, Texas Tech (-134) has suspended WR T.J. Vasher (37-473-6) for this battle. He leads the team in touchdown receptions. WR Dalton Rigdon (33-469-5) is second in TD grabs, but he could also sit due to a concussion. Officially, he is questionable.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Kansas State to win would return a profit of $11.10.

Against the Spread (ATS)

KANSAS STATE (+2.5, -110) is worth a look with the points, if you’re feeling like it will be a close game. But really, K-State is a much better play on the moneyline since you’ll catch plus-money. I don’t recommend them, but Texas Tech (-2.5, -110) is the play for those who like the Red Raiders to win rather than playing the ML.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 55.5 (-110) is the way to go in this one, although I am struggling to figure who will score for TTU with Vasher out and Rigdon possibly joining him on the shelf. Still, the Over is 9-2 in the past 11 meetings in this series and a perfect 6-0 in the past six home battles for Texas Tech, so there’s that.

Why Kansas State Will Win

This has to be when the running game kicks back in.

It was rocking and rolling over a two-game stretch against Oklahoma and Kansas, and then offense started to move it more through the air against Texas – the ground attack didn’t work – and the mistakes against West Virginia were too much to overcome.

Texas Tech’s run defense hasn’t been miserable, but the Wildcats have to go back to what works. And if not, they can start throwing at will against the Big 12’s worst pass defense.

Texas Tech allows 310 yards per game through the air – giving up over 320 yards in each of its last five games and over 400 in two of its last three – but again, everything works better for the Wildcats if they can get going on the ground right away.

On the other side, the K-State defense gives up passing yards, but it comes through time and again on third downs – offenses only convert on 27% of their chances. Again, though …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Kansas State pass defense is a wee bit of an issue.

There isn’t a pass rush, and there isn’t a ton of pressure in the backfield – the Wildcats are dead last in the Big 12 in tackles for loss – and Texas Tech’s offense doesn’t need the extra time.

This might not be the high-flying fun show of past Texas Tech versions, but Jett Duffey has thrown for close to 700 yards over the last two weeks with over ten yards per pass.

Against the Wildcats, it’s all about completion percentage.

More completed passes, more long drives, more chances to take K-State out of its game that relies on time of possession. The team is 1-4 when allowing teams to hit 62% or more of their passes – Oklahoma was the only outlier – and it’s 5-0 when holding teams under the mark.

Duffey completes 67% of his throws overall, and has only been under it once in the last five games.

What’s Going To Happen

The Red Raiders have to get past Kansas State this week and Texas next week to get bowl eligible. In the final home game of the year they’ll get the job done with the midrange passing attack overcoming a Kansas State offense that won’t be able to control the game like it’ll need to.
