Victory Vaka is a top target for Michigan’s football team.

The 6-foot-3, 325-pound defensive tackle is a four-star prospect and scheduled to make his commitment Dec. 16. From now until then, he has plenty to figure out.

From Westlake Village (Calif.) Westlake, Vaka has trimmed his list to five schools – Michigan, Oregon, Texas A&M, Florida and Florida State.

The only reason the Wolverines made the top group is because of defensive line coach Shaun Nua.

“I love that guy,” Vaka told WolverinesWire. “I’m also in constant communication with coach Don Brown. Defensive tackle is a position of need, and I want to play early.”

Vaka has official visits scheduled for Florida (April 18), Michigan (June 19), Oregon (Sept. 11) and Texas A&M (Nov. 7).

Since the 2019 season concluded, Michigan has found itself in need of depth on the defensive line. The Wolverines struggled in the run game and didn’t have many options outside of redshirt senior Carlo Kemp at the inside spots.

Entering his second year, Nua is in charge of finding new pieces.

Because of Nua’s leadership, Vaka sees himself wearing maize and blue.

“Just me being under coach (Jim) Harbaugh and coach Nua would be a huge honor,” he said.

Spring practice cancellations because of coronavirus concerns have postponed the visits Vaka was planning to make during the spring, but he’s still slated to commit on early signing day.

Vaka is ranked No. 200 in the country, No. 13 at defensive tackle and No. 19 in California, according to the 247Sports composite.

Wasserman: Notre Dame Adversely Affected by COVID-19

Subscribers to The Athletic who love college football might enjoy Ari Wasserman’s column, “This Week in Recruiting”.

Subscribers to The Athletic who love college football might enjoy Ari Wasserman’s column, “This Week in Recruiting”. If you like Notre Dame, you might not have cared for the opening tidbit from this week’s edition.

In short, Wasserman writes that because Notre Dame isn’t located in a state known for football talent, the program has to look elsewhere for prospects, and the travel restrictions put in place by COVID-19 have halted all progress. None of the prospects they were supposed to meet with live anywhere near northern Indiana, so Notre Dame won’t have a lot of time to make a splash for its next class, and that distance already makes it difficult.

If Wasserman is correct, this class will say a lot about what Brian Kelly can do with an even shorter period of time than usual. He can talk about the tradition and grandeur that comes with playing for Notre Dame all he wants, but without the opportunity to meet with the recruits he and the rest of the program desires, he’ll have to get really creative. Otherwise, the Irish could be faced with some glaring holes opponents will look to take advantage of over the next few years.

247Sports Updates ‘22 Recruit Rankings, Several Notre Dame Prospects Ranked Highly

The class of 2022 isn’t that far away from signing day and 247Sports updated their rankings with several Irish prospects ranked high

It is never too late to look ahead and today 247Sports made their initial Top247 recruit rankings for the class of 2022. These prospects are rising juniors, so this list will surely change drastically before any of them sign a letter of intent, but nevertheless it is a good barometer of where they stand compared to their peers.

The Fighting Irish have extended scholarships to numerous ’22 prospects, so let’s take a look at who could potentially be wearing the Blue and Gold in a few years. There have been around 30 verbal offers out to prospects that have been reported, with a good number of them showing up on 247’s list.

Starting in the backfield, Brian Kelly has offered three running backs: Colorado’s Gavin Sawchuk, Pennsylvania’s Nicholas Singleton and Texas’ Emeka Megwa. Each of them were ranked, with Sawchuk leading the way at 39th overall, Singleton checking in at 84th and Megwa making the list at 215th.

The wide receiver offers double the amount already given out to the RB’s but each of them has been included in the rankings. California star Tetairoa McMillan leads the list as the 5th best player in the country while fellow Golden State prospect C.J. Williams is the 31st player on the list. A pair of Illinois WR’s in Kaleb Brown and Tyler Morris made it as well, Brown at 35 and Morris a bit lower at 56. Oklahoma WR Talyn Shettron is 93rd while Ohio’s Kaden Saunders, listed as an athlete, made the list as well at 166th.

It should come to no one’s surprise that the Irish are after elite tight ends, two of them holding offers and both of them making the Top 247. Tony Livingston is considered an athlete, but many believe the Florida native will play tight end in college, check in as the 53rd best player. Texas star Donovan Green holds the other Irish TE offer, is ranked as the 112th player nationally.

On the offensive line, only a few offers have been dolled out and three of Notre Dame’s targets made the list. Wisconsin tackle Joe Brunner is the 67th ranked prospect and fellow statesman Carson Hinzman, a guard, is the 81st best player. Florida tackle Julian Armella also holds an Irish offer is the 127th best player in the country.

One the defense, the nation’s best prospect according to the rankings has an Notre Dame offer, Florida DE Shemar Stewart. Staying with the defensive ends, Texas’ Ernest Cooper IV is ranked 76th, Maryland’s Dani Dennis-Sutton ranked 99th and New Jersey’s KJ Miles as the 117th best player in the country all have gotten Notre Dame’s attention.

Each of the four offers out to linebackers are ranked in the Top 247, with Nevada’s Cyrus Moss the highest ranked at 28th. Maryland’s Jaishawn Barham is a high-level prospect as well, ranking 40th overall. Ohio’s Gabe Powers is just a few spots being Barham, at 43rd while Kansas’ Dasan McCullough is 73rd.

In the secondary there are multiple players the Irish are courting, California star Kamari Ramsey being the highest ranked at 96th. New Jersey’s Jaeden Gould is ranked slightly behind at 96th while Wisconsin’s Braelon Allen is 116th. Staying in the Midwest with Iowa’s Xavier Nwankap, ranked 123rd and Ohio’s C.J. Hicks is 162nd. Back out west to California, you’ll find Ephesians Prysock ranked 195th and the final player with an Irish offer in the secondary is Texas’ Cristian Driver, ranked at 212.

The Irish have gotten off to a fantastic start to their 2021 class and if you look a the offers out to the 2022 class, it seems like Brian Kelly could have yet another outstanding group of players heading to South Bend when the cycle ends.

Top 2022 basketball prospect Emoni Bates reportedly calls MSU his ‘dream school’

The No. 1 high school prospect in the country recently referred to Michigan State as his dream school, according to a Twitter user.

[jwplayer 7mRNeKHd]

The best high school basketball player in the world right now, regardless of age, is Emoni Bates. The top 2022 basketball prospect has already received comparisons to Kevin Durant and is all but guaranteed to emerge as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. The hype behind Bates, who lives in Ypsilanti, Michigan, is immense, and according to Tipton Edits, a Twitter user who has connections in the college basketball recruiting world, Bates recently called MSU his ‘dream school.’

The only question is, will Bates even spend time in school? There is still rampant speculation about the NBA changing the rules by the time Bates would be eligible to play for the Spartans. If the NBA does allow high school players to enter the NBA Draft in 2022, Bates would be the focus, and the face, of that decision.

Here is the initial tweet from Tipton Edits:

Bates has been around the program since he first got to high school, and MSU is the frontrunner along with Kentucky to land his recruitment if he goes to school, but that is still a fairly big ‘if’ at this point so temper your expectations accordingly.

5-star RB includes Georgia football in most recent cut

5-star RB TreVeyon Henderson included Georgia football in his most recent cut.

Georgia fans received some good news on Tuesday when five-star running back TreVeyon Henderson included the Bulldogs in his most recent cut.

Henderson cut his list of schools to nine: Georgia, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Texas, Ohio State, North Carolina, Penn State, Michigan and Oklahoma.

Henderson hails from Hopewell, Virginia. Kirby Smart will have his work cut out for him to persuade the 5-foot, 11-inch, 195-pound Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year to head south to Georgia.

Henderson ranks as the nation’s No. 17 overall prospect, No. 2 running back and No. 3 player in his state.

Ohio State is viewed as his leader, per the 247Sports Crystal Ball. Oklahoma is right there as well.

Henderson took a visit to Georgia in early February and holds over 40 offers.

The Buckeyes possess the nation’s top recruiting class for the 2021 cycle and recently landed a commitment from another elite running back, Georgia target Evan Pryor.

3-Star WR Markus Allen lists Michigan State Football in his top 10 choices

3-Star Ohio WR Markus Allen lists Michigan State football as one of his top 10 choices today. Read more details about this high school WR.

Michigan State football recruiting is in full swing right now thanks to new coach Mel Tucker. Now, 3-Star WR Markus Allen lists Michigan State in his top 10 choices. Markus Allen graduates from Xenia High School in 2021. Allen stands at 6’2″ and weighs 190-pounds. Note, he broke the Xenia High School record for most touchdowns in a season.

In his High School career, Allen tallied up 51 receptions, 1,099 yards, and 15 touchdowns. Markus Allen listed other Big Ten teams including Purdue, Wisconsin, and Michigan in his top ten choices. So he might just end up on a rival Big Ten team if not Michigan State. He also listed Pittsburgh in his top ten, which means Patt Narduzzi just might land an impressive Ohio WR.

We will continue to provide more recruiting news as it drops here at SpartansWire.

Michigan makes top ten for 2021 three-star WR

The Wolverines made the cut for the 3-star wideout, but there are a lot of other top teams in pursuit.

[jwplayer d555li9S-XNcErKyb]

It wasn’t that long ago that Clayton (OH) Northmont three-star wide receiver Markus Allen got his Michigan offer. As a matter of fact, it was just over a month ago on Feb. 6.

But, he certainly holds the Wolverines in high regards.

While he’s rated a three-star, Allen has been under-evaluated at this point, as he doesn’t hold an actual numeric ranking from any of the recruiting services at this time. But, clearly he’s a talent, as 21 reported offers, including from some big time programs.

Allen took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce his current top ten (though he admits, his recruitment is still open). And Michigan made the cut.

[lawrence-related id=22547,22535,22508]

Michigan will have to contend with four other Big Ten teams, three ACC squads and one American Conference and Big 12 team, as Allen also added Wisconsin, MSU, Indiana and Purdue; Pitt, Virginia and Wake Forest; and Cincinnati and Kansas to round out his top ten.

NLI signings suspended for high school athletes

NLI signings suspended for high school athletes.

After the NCAA declared a recruiting dead period through April 15 in wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Collegiate Commissioner’s Association has followed suit. The CCA has matched the recruiting dead period in suspending National Letter of Intent signings.

“The NLI suspension applies to both Division I and II NLI member institutions,” reads the statement. “As such, NLIs cannot be issued to Division I and II prospective student-athletes effective March 16, 2020 through at least April 15, 2020.

“NLIs issued and signed by prospective student-athletes before March 16, 2020 should still be managed through the normal validation process with the conference office.”

This impacts high school student-athletes across the country who have not yet officially decided on their college destination. In particular, it impacts Tennessee running back target Zach Evans.

Evans is a 5-star and No. 2 running back in the 2021 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite. Evans’ recruitment was pushed back past the late signing period in early February, and now it will be pushed back further. The Houston native is being pursued heavily by Ole Miss, Florida and Texas A&M along with the Vols.

The CAA’s statement noted that after the NLI suspension is lifted, the Division I football signing period will be extended by 30 days. Previously, it was slated to end on April 1.

Ohio State lands Tennessee target, highly-rated in-state safety

Ohio State lands Tennessee target, highly-rated in-state safety.

Ohio State picked up a big commitment on Tuesday, as Nashville product Andre Turrentine committed to the Buckeyes over Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and LSU.

Turrentine is a 4-star prospect on the 247Sports Composite, and is one of the elite safety prospects in the country, as the No. 6 safety in the 2021 recruiting class. Turrentine is also the No. 3 prospect in the state of Tennessee.

Out of Ensworth High School, Turrentine partnered in the defensive backfield with 2020 Tennessee safety signee Keshawn Lawrence, but the connection was not enough to pry Turrentine away from heading to Columbus. Defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley has been working as Turrentine’s primary recruiter, with help from wide receivers coach Tee Martin.

Recently named Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs led the charge for Turrentine’s commitment. Coombs had spent the last two seasons in Nashville, as the defensive backs coach for the Tennessee Titans under Mike Vrabel.

While Tennessee will very likely continue to recruit Turrentine, the Vols may have to look elsewhere for a highly-rated defensive back.
