North Texas vs Texas Southern Game Preview

Why Texas Southern Will Win

The Tigers were able to keep up for a while in the 40-23 loss to Prairie View A&M, but it couldn’t handle the running game. However, there’s a nice rotation of runners to give North Texas a few problems.

The Mean Green couldn’t do much to slow down SMU in last week’s 48-10 loss, and the offense hasn’t been able to open it up on the ground yet. It hasn’t been bad, but it’s not going to come up with the big, gashing runs that crushes Texas Southern.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why North Texas Will Win

The Tiger defense won’t be able to come up with enough stops to overcome the struggles on offense.

North Texas might not have been able to hold up against SMU’s O, but the attack has the parts to throw better, the D was terrific in the win over UTEP, and now it should all work against the porous Texas Southern defensive front.

No, the Mean Green haven’t been able to crank up the big runs yet, but …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

They’re about to come this week.

The North Texas offense has the parts to be a problem for everyone in the Conference USA race, and this is when they all get to show what they can do. Texas Southern will come up with a few scores, but it won’t have a prayer of keeping up after the first quarter.

SMU vs North Texas Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

North Texas looked fantastic in the season opener on the road, beating UTEP 31-13 with a big day from QB Austin Aune with decent help from the ground game.

The downfield passing attack worked – the Mean Green receivers are a problem – and now they’re going against a green SMU secondary that has a slew of nice parts, but hasn’t been tested.

The defense did a lot of bending but not breaking against the Miners. It needs to hold up against the run, the offensive line could stand to be a bit stronger for the ground game, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why SMU Will Win

The North Texas secondary has to tighten up a bit after allowing close to 300 yards last week.

It held firm in the second half, but now it has to deal with SMU’s attack and new head coach Rhett Lashlee. The passing game is going to kick in fast with veteran QB Tanner Mordecai and a phenomenal receiving corps about to blow up.

North Texas doesn’t have a high-end pass rush, and it’s going to have to deal with midrange completion after midrange completion.

This should be a bit of a shootout, and SMU is far better equipped for it.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

SMU will have to take a few hits from a North Texas offense that’s going to keep the chains moving, but Mordecai and the offense will be balanced and explosive.

The Mustangs won 35-12 last year – it’s going to be more of an offensive show than that. More pass plays, more deep shots, and more fun – but with roughly the same result.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Frank Harris, Sr. UTSA

Last year it was RB Sincere McCormick – along with a solid defense – that took over on way to the Conference USA title and a breakthrough season for the UTSA program. The quarterback was pretty good, too.

The 6-0, 200-pound lefty was the main man leading the way, and now this is his team more than ever after two terrific seasons. Harris has connected on 66% of his career passes, kept the interceptions down with six in each of the last two years, and in 2021 he started hitting his deep throws a bit more. Combine all of that with over 1,200 rushing yards and 15 scores, and this might be his league, too.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

LB KD Davis, Sr. North Texas

The 6-0, 229-pounder isn’t huge, and he might not have the build of a normal middle linebacker, but he’s got great range and he makes a whole lot of tackles.

The 2021 First Team and 2020 Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honoree made 284 tackles – leading Conference USA with 121 stops – with 11 sacks and 28 tackles for loss over the last three seasons for a team not known for its defense. In his fifth year, expect him to be even more disruptive.

Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.

North Texas Mean Green Preview 2022

Is Seth Littrell ready to take North Texas into a new era?

He’s a young head coach who was a hot name in the overall mix after two straight nine win seasons in 2017 and 2018, but three straight losing seasons and a 14-21 record since then changed the perception.

His teams can crank up the offense, improved a bit on defense, and at least got to bowl games in five of his six seasons at the helm. Granted, the Mean Green lost all five of the bowls, but he got there.

Now North Texas is gearing up for live in the American Athletic Conference next year. The league might be a shadow of its former self with the stars taking off, but it’s still a big step for the program and the university.

This year, with a few schools taking off early for the Sun Belt, and with a loaded offense coming back, this is when the team and program should rise back up again.

The tough schedule might have something to say about that, but in Year Seven, this is when North Texas needs to be the team everyone else fears. And it will be because of the …

North Texas Mean Green Preview 2022: Offense

The scoring punch might have been hit or miss, but it geared it back up after a tough start to win five straight games to close out the regular season, it finished with the fifth-best rushing game in the country, and the passing game was consistent as the season went on.

With eight starters expected to be back, and help on the way from the transfer portal, the attack should be even better.

The quarterback situation just got more interesting. Austin Aune wasn’t all that accurate, but he ran well and turned up the downfield passing game over the second half of the campaign.

Former North Carolina transfer Jace Ruder got his chances, but now he and Aune have try holding off former Arizona Wildcat and Memphis Tiger Grant Gunnell.

The quarterbacks have a loaded receiving corps to throw to. Roderic Burns, Damon Ward, and the return of deep threat Jyaire Shorter from missing most of last year will crank things up.

The great running game has to replace 1,215-yard, 13 TD star DeAndre Toney. However, Ikaika Ragsdale and the next three top backs return, and Aune is a good runner – if he grabs the gig as the starter.

The offensive line loses tackle Jacob Brammer to Vanderbilt, but the other four starters are back including all-star center Manase Mose.

North Texas Mean Green Preview 2022: Defense

The defense was a hot mess in 2020. It closed out allowing 500 rushing yards to Appalachian State, gave up close to seven yards per play, and it finished the season dead last in college football allowing 522 yards per game.

The 2021 defense improved by leaps and bounds, allowing 382 yards per game and just 5.7 yards per play.

There’s a lot of turnover and the depth is lacking, but at least North Texas knows it can play some D.

Step One is replacing the Murphys. Grayson and Gabriel Murphy combined for 15.5 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss, and now they’re living the life out a UCLA.

The Mean Green don’t have the star defensive ends to replace those two. That’s going to be a fall camp work in progress, and finding two new tackles to replace Dion Novel and Caleb Colvin won’t be easy either. There’s not a ton of size, but 6-0, 288-pound Enoch Johnson has the upside to be a factor.

The linebackers should take over. KD Nixon was an all-around star, earning First Team All-C-USA honors with a team-high 121 yards – and he got into the backfield – and Larry Nixon, Sean-Thomas Faulkner, and Kevin Wood are all veteran tacklers.

The defensive backs have to make more big plays after coming up with just three of the team’s six interceptions, but three of the four starters are expected back – DeShawn Gaddie will once again be one of the team’s top tacklers and big on breaking up passes.

North Texas vs UTEP Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

Can North Texas keep it all going after winning five straight regular season game to close out 2021, including a 20-17 win over UTEP?

The quarterback room got stronger with more options to push Austin Aune, the running backs are there around a veteran offensive line, and the defense should be just good enough to hold up against a UTEP offense that’s not going to explode.

The Miners lost their star deep threat – Jacob Cowing is about to do big things for Arizona – for a passing game that wasn’t exactly razor sharp. On the other side, UNT might have its best linebacking corps in the Seth Littrell era and should hold up well against the run, but …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP isn’t going to get fancy, but it should be effective.

It’s going to use its suddenly-strong offensive front to try pounding away. The running backs are deep and good, three all-stars return on the O line, and Gavin Hardison is a veteran quarterback who’ll keep pushing the ball deep – the UNT secondary is a bit of a question mark – even without Cowing.

The linebacking corps is great, Praise Amaewhule is one of the best pass rushers in the conference, and the secondary got a whole bunch of help from the transfer portal.

What’s Going To Happen

This should be a relatively low-scoring battle – sort of like last year’s meeting – with the UTEP defense keeping the North Texas ground game that led Conference USA last season from going off.

The Mean Green were stuffed for under four yards per carry by the Miners last year and won, but they should be a wee bit better and the passing game will connect on the third down plays the other side won’t.

It might not be the most scintillating game, but it’ll be close and it’ll get interesting late.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Results So Far ATS: 85-67-2

One massive miscalculation later …

I blame missing EVERYTHING against the spread during an epically bad Saturday on the stress and strain of having to scramble to find ESPN after the YouTube TV/Disney kerfuffle, and …

I can’t blame this multi-billion conglomerates. It was all my fault for totally whiffing on my belief that Conference USA was going to get rim-rocked this bowl season – except, of course, for my pick of Marshall to cover against Louisiana. (It didn’t.)

Picking bowl games takes a different skill set from the regular season. Logic, reason, and normal rules don’t always apply – hello, Jackson State and BYU.

So I’m done with you, Conference USA. You win.

I’m staying away from the against the spread calls of Old Dominion vs Tulsa in the Myrtle Beach Bowl (I like Tulsa -9, of course), UTSA vs San Diego State in Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl (I like SDSU -2.5, of course), and Miami University vs North Texas in the Frisco Football Classic (I like MU, of course).

I always stick with my picks, I take my beating, and then I move on. But there were things that have gone the right was so far.

The point totals went just fine over the first several games, so I’m mostly going with those for these bowls during the week before Christmas.

Pray for me.

5. Missouri vs Army: Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl

LINE Army -4
ATS PICK Missouri

Oh, I am well aware that you pick against Army at your own risk.

I’m an adult, I take responsibility for my own actions, and I will almost always take my chances with SEC team over a Group of Five-level team.

Especially if that SEC team is getting points.

Yeah, I’m still smarting from going hard on San Diego State and its amazing defense in the 2017 Armed Forces Bowl – and then Army won.

Yeah, I’m still smarting from going hard on Houston in what should’ve been an easy in in the 2018 Armed Forces Bowl – and then Army won 70-14.

Yeah, I’m still smarting from going hard on West Virginia against the spread in the 2020 Liberty Bowl – and Army lost, but only by three.

Army is 4-1 in its last five bowl games from 2010 on, but there’s a strange part to that. None of the four bowl wins were against Power Five programs, and Army didn’t actually beat West Virginia last year.

In fact, Army hasn’t beaten a Power Five program since the win over Duke in 2017. Before that you have to go back to a 2012 win over Boston College.

I’m fully aware – and love – what Army does, and I know bowls go against what we all believe in our core to be true, but you’re getting points here. You’re not even asking the Power Five team to win big.

Miami University vs North Texas Frisco Football Classic Bowl Preview

If you’re going to make up a bowl game at the last possible second out of thin air – just because – you’re not going to send two boring teams that might grind down in a defensive slugfest. No, you want big plays, offense, and two teams that will be jacked to get the opportunity.

There were two more bowl eligible teams than slots available with a San Francisco-based bowl canceling this year, so the Frisco Bowl Classic – not to be confused with the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl – was invented just before all of the matchups were announced.

In comes North Texas after overcoming a 1-6 start to win five straight to get here. The running game went wild late in the season with over 320 yards in three of the last four games.

Miami University probably would’ve had a slot somewhere else, but the extra bowl locked it in. It won four of its last six games thanks to a high-powered passing game that rolled for 200 yards or more in every game but the opener against Cincinnati, and bombed away for over 1,400 over the last four games.

Can the RedHawks stop the run? Sort of, but not really. Can the Mean Green stop the pass? Sort of, but not really. So let’s have some fun on a Thursday afternoon.
