Frisco Bowl What Happened

In a much tougher fight than originally expected, Boise State ran for 318 yards, needing all of them in the back-and-forth fight before finally pulling away late. North Texas was up 24-21 late in the third, but Boise State took the ensuing drive 75 yards with Taylen Green finishing with a 19-yard touchdown run to take the lead for good. North Texas pulled to within three late, but it got stuck deep in its own end on its final drives and stalled on the last gasp chance.

North Texas couldn’t hold up against the Boise State running game, but the offense worked. Ikaika Ragsdale ran for two scores and Austin Aune threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jyaire Shorter.

– North Texas turned it over twice, Boise State didn’t lose the ball. That was just enough to help swing the game with both able to move the chains. North Texas converted half of its third down tries, but it couldn’t handle the Boise State offense in the third quarter on.

Frisco Bowl Player of the Game

Taylen Green, QB Boise State
As part of the ground game that averaged over six yards per pop, Green ran 12 times for 119 yards and two scores – averaging 9.9 yards per carry – and completed 13-of-22 passes for 137 yards and a score.

Frisco Bowl Fun Stats

– Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty ran 28 times for 178 yards and a score

– Total Yards: Boise State 455 – North Texas 435

Frisco Bowl What It All Means

Boise State should’ve had an easier time – the running game worked like it was supposed to – but after losing the Mountain West Championship at home to Fresno State, coming away with the win for a ten-victory season mattered. It was the first double-digit win campaign since 2019 and the program’s first bowl win since the 2017 Las Vegas.

North Texas didn’t have a run defense, its head coach got fired, and it came into this without a strong win on the resumé. Interim head coach Phil Bennett had his team ready and intense, the offense worked against the strong Boise State defense, and it was a great overall performance considering the situation.

However, the program is off to the American Athletic Conference going four straight seasons without a winning record – it finished 7-7 – and it’s now 0-6 in its last six bowl tries since winning the Heart of Dallas back in 2013.

USC associate director of sports performance leaves for North Texas Mean Green

Bryan Kegans worked with Lincoln Riley for the past several seasons. Like Riley, he briefly played for Mike Leach at Texas Tech.

North Texas and new head coach Eric Morris are set to hire Bryan Kegans as their new head strength coach, per Brett Vito of the Denton Record-Chronicle in Texas.

Kegans served this season as the associate director of football sports performance at USC. He previously spent time at Guyer High School in Denton.

Bryan Kegans came to USC in January of 2022 as associate director of football sports performance.

He spent the previous four seasons (2018-21) at Oklahoma, where he was assistant director of sports performance/director of sport science.  The Sooners won the Big 12 title in 2018, 2019 and 2020, and made a pair of College Football Playoff semifinal appearances in 2018 and 2019.

Kegans was an offensive lineman and special teams player for four years (2002-05) at Texas Tech, starting at guard as a 2005 senior.

In those years at Texas Tech he played with Kliff Kingsbury, B.J Symons and Lincoln Riley. He played under Spike Dykes — an assistant coach at the time — and head coach Mike Leach.

Mountain West Football: Examining Each Opponent’s Week 3 Depth Chart

Mountain West Football: Examining Each Opponent’s Week 3 Depth Chart

What stands out in the depth charts released by each of the Mountain West’s eight Week 3 non-conference opponents?

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

What to keep in mind before kickoff.

Duquesne

What stands out: After starting nearly all of last year, quarterback Darius Perrantes has taken a back seat to the athlete he replaced: Joe Mischler.

Why that could be important: Perrantes had a solid 2021 in a pinch, but it may have always been a matter of time until the job belonged to Mischler. And why not? He was a first-team all-conference selection in the FCS spring season and averaged 9.2 yards per attempt with nine touchdowns in five games, so Hawaii finding its footing on defense may not necessarily be a given.

UTEP (link to game notes, depth chart on page 5)

What stands out: With Justin Garrett and Jacob Cowing now gone, the depth chart at wide receiver is now led by Tyrin Smith, Reynaldo Flores, and Kelly Akharaiyi.

Why that could be important: In short, the Miners were one of the most explosive passing attacks anywhere in the Group of 5 last year but they’re struggled to replicate that without their two 2021 stars. Smith has seen his yards per catch average drop from 17.3 to 13.4 while Flores, though he’s already surpassed last year’s catch total with 19 so far, has seen a drop from 15.7 to 12.4.

It’s not for a lack of trying, but the New Mexico Lobos secondary could find itself in a position of strength once again on Saturday.

North Texas (link to depth chart)

What stands out: The Mean Green have talent in their front seven, but cornerback Ridge Texada has been thrust into a big spot opposite veteran DeShawn Gaddie in the secondary.

Why that could be important: If UNT has a potential Achilles heel for UNLV to exploit, it might be their porous pass defense. The Mean Green got shredded by SMU two weeks ago and even FCS Texas Southern did some damage through the air, but Texada and Gaddie have had two pass breakups each in the early going and will have their hands full with Kyle Williams, Ricky White, and company.

UT Martin (link to game notes, depth chart on page 9)

What stands out: The Skyhawks had an open quarterback competition headed into the season, but incumbent Dresser Winn currently sits atop the depth chart and started both of UTM’s first two games over Cornelious Brown IV.

Why that could be important: After ascending to the QB1 role in a tight spot late last season, Winn hasn’t made the Skyhawks regret their decision in the young season. Against Western Illinois and Missouri State, he’s completed 65.3% of his throws, averaged 8.5 yards per attempt, and throws six touchdowns against just one interception. Obviously, facing the Boise State defense marks an extra degree of difficulty or three, but UT Martin has the offensive talent to hang around on the blue if the passing game remains sharp.

North Texas Mean Green Preview 2022

Is Seth Littrell ready to take North Texas into a new era?

He’s a young head coach who was a hot name in the overall mix after two straight nine win seasons in 2017 and 2018, but three straight losing seasons and a 14-21 record since then changed the perception.

His teams can crank up the offense, improved a bit on defense, and at least got to bowl games in five of his six seasons at the helm. Granted, the Mean Green lost all five of the bowls, but he got there.

Now North Texas is gearing up for live in the American Athletic Conference next year. The league might be a shadow of its former self with the stars taking off, but it’s still a big step for the program and the university.

This year, with a few schools taking off early for the Sun Belt, and with a loaded offense coming back, this is when the team and program should rise back up again.

The tough schedule might have something to say about that, but in Year Seven, this is when North Texas needs to be the team everyone else fears. And it will be because of the …

North Texas Mean Green Preview 2022: Offense

The scoring punch might have been hit or miss, but it geared it back up after a tough start to win five straight games to close out the regular season, it finished with the fifth-best rushing game in the country, and the passing game was consistent as the season went on.

With eight starters expected to be back, and help on the way from the transfer portal, the attack should be even better.

The quarterback situation just got more interesting. Austin Aune wasn’t all that accurate, but he ran well and turned up the downfield passing game over the second half of the campaign.

Former North Carolina transfer Jace Ruder got his chances, but now he and Aune have try holding off former Arizona Wildcat and Memphis Tiger Grant Gunnell.

The quarterbacks have a loaded receiving corps to throw to. Roderic Burns, Damon Ward, and the return of deep threat Jyaire Shorter from missing most of last year will crank things up.

The great running game has to replace 1,215-yard, 13 TD star DeAndre Toney. However, Ikaika Ragsdale and the next three top backs return, and Aune is a good runner – if he grabs the gig as the starter.

The offensive line loses tackle Jacob Brammer to Vanderbilt, but the other four starters are back including all-star center Manase Mose.

North Texas Mean Green Preview 2022: Defense

The defense was a hot mess in 2020. It closed out allowing 500 rushing yards to Appalachian State, gave up close to seven yards per play, and it finished the season dead last in college football allowing 522 yards per game.

The 2021 defense improved by leaps and bounds, allowing 382 yards per game and just 5.7 yards per play.

There’s a lot of turnover and the depth is lacking, but at least North Texas knows it can play some D.

Step One is replacing the Murphys. Grayson and Gabriel Murphy combined for 15.5 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss, and now they’re living the life out a UCLA.

The Mean Green don’t have the star defensive ends to replace those two. That’s going to be a fall camp work in progress, and finding two new tackles to replace Dion Novel and Caleb Colvin won’t be easy either. There’s not a ton of size, but 6-0, 288-pound Enoch Johnson has the upside to be a factor.

The linebackers should take over. KD Nixon was an all-around star, earning First Team All-C-USA honors with a team-high 121 yards – and he got into the backfield – and Larry Nixon, Sean-Thomas Faulkner, and Kevin Wood are all veteran tacklers.

The defensive backs have to make more big plays after coming up with just three of the team’s six interceptions, but three of the four starters are expected back – DeShawn Gaddie will once again be one of the team’s top tacklers and big on breaking up passes.

Two teams on the upswing?

UNLV Football: First Look at 2022 Non-conference Opponents

Idaho State | Cal | North Texas | Notre Dame

After taking a road trip to the Bay Area in non-conference play, the UNLV Rebels will head home in Week 2 to host the North Texas Mean Green. It will be their first meeting since the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Location: Denton, Texas

Conference: Conference USA

Series History: UNLV leads the series over North Texas 4-1; their last meeting was in 2014.

2021 Record: 6-7 (5-3 CUSA)

Head Coach: Seth Littrell (seventh year at North Texas, 37-38 overall). After the Mean Green limped out the gate to a 1-6 start, few coaches in the country had a hotter seat in the middle of the 2021 season. Littrell and his staff engineered one of the more dramatic second-half turnarounds in recent memory, though, ripping off five straight wins (including upsets over UTSA and UTEP) to land his fifth bowl bid in six years.

Is the pressure still on? North Texas hasn’t won a division title since 2017 and are now preparing to exit Conference USA for the American in 2023, meaning that Littrell will want to accomplish big things this fall and erase the temptation of a new start for someone else.

Key Players

KD Davis, LB

Davis was named Honorable Mention All-CUSA by Pro Football Focus, after leading the conference with 121 tackles in 2021. Considered the transfer portal for a Power 5 school, with visits to Texas A&M and Ole Miss, before ultimately deciding to return to North Texas. Losses on the defensive line could make 2022 a challenging year for Davis, but he is part of a strong linebacker unit that will remain the heart of this defense.

Roderic Burns, WR

As a slot receiver who led the team with 58 receptions for 802 yards in 2021, Burns will look to build upon his season with one of the stronger wide receiver groups in Conference USA. A former walk-on at North Texas, Burns has big-play potential, albeit within an offense looking to establish the run.

Austin Aune, QB

Aune comes into 2022 as the projected starter, having led North Texas on a five-game winning streak to finish the season and become bowl eligible. But after only completing 51.2% of his passes, and the expectations for this year, the critics will come quickly if Aune struggles early.

John Davis, CB

As a junior, Davis returns to what could be a promising secondary for the Mean Green. Injuries took their toll on this unit in 2021, and Davis will start 2022 looking to improve upon a passing defense that finished fifth in the conference at 230.5 yards per game.

Manase Mose, OG

Starting for a fifth straight season, Mose will be one of four starters return on the offensive line for North Texas in 2022. Named to the second team all-conference last year, Mose will play guard or center anchoring that only allowed 18 sacks last season and will look to run the ball early and often.

Overview:

Offense

The Mean Green will seek to build upon a strong running attack behind an experienced offensive line. Having produced the fifth-best rushing offense in 2021, at more than 230 yards per game, North Texas returns three running backs who accounted for almost 1,400 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Make no mistake: the running game will continue from last year to form the base of their 2022 campaign.

The questions will arise when that ground game is challenged and another way to win is needed. The passing game may require time to develop at quarterback, but the receivers should be able to move the chains as a capable, if not explosive, part of the offense.

If there is stability at quarterback, whether it be Aune or one of the others in a relatively deep quarterbacks room, this team can easily perform well enough to get to a bowl game once again. Built on a strong running game, the offense should be an entertaining team to watch in 2022.

Defense

This defense has had its share of ups and downs, from injuries last year to losses in the transfer portal this year. But North Texas gets a number of players healthy to start the 2022 campaign, players that will need to step up quickly to improve upon a difficult scoring defense (ranked 79th, at 27.5 points per game).

The defensive line will be a point of concern, with losses in the transfer portal, but improved linebacker play should fortify the front seven overall. Senior Quinn Whitlock returns from injury to the “Eagle” position (a linebacker/safety hybrid) that also bolster a defense looking to improve overall.

Any positives in the turnover department will help as well, as the team finished 70th nationally.

Early Predictions

The Rebels should be improved on both sides of the ball this year, but it remains to be seen whether they have an impact defensive player who can disrupt week in and week out following Jacoby Windmon’s departure and, at least for now, Brennon Scott’s injury-related absence. That might be the difference against a veteran Mean Green offense that will inevitably look to run the ball and lean on what could be a UNLV defense still finding its footing.

Taking a look at the UNLV schedule

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

UNLV’s non-conference slate is in a set of tiers this year. It has a pair of Power 5 teams with Notre Dame and Cal, both on the road, with the Irish being a projected top 10 team. Then the Bears which are not a great Pac-12 team head coach Justin Wilcox is on the hot seat.

The others are winnable games vs. Idaho State and North Texas which has slipped a little bit under Seth Littrell but are still a bowl team over the past few years.

Our staff ranked all 49 non-conference games and the Rebels FBS games were middle of the pack and the game against the Bengals game came near the bottom of the list for good reason.

Aug. 27 vs. Idaho State (ranked No. 47)

This is a very winnable game and is a game that Marcus Arroyo must win to see if this UNLV team can get to a bowl game for the first time since 2013.

If the Rebels fall in this game then perhaps any leeway that Arroyo has will instantly be gone as he enters his third season. As a reminder to UNLV fans, the 2021 squad lost to Eastern Washington last year. That EWU team is much better than this Bengals squad but UNLV should win this game and not take any FCS team for granted.

Sept. 10 at Cal (ranked No. 25)

The Rebels will not be favored in this road game in Berkely but the Cal Bears are not expected to be a contender in the Pac-12. Win totals have the Bears at 5.5 so a bowl game is in the mix for Cal.

Wilcox’s teams are known for defense and that will make for a challenge for this UNLV offense that is going through a quarterback battle. With Cal’s offense not being good over the past few years, so that could play a factor in the Rebels having a chance if this game is first to 21.

Similarly to UNLV, Cal has a quarterback competition this fall and it will be down to Purdue transfer Jack Plummer or redshirt freshman Kai Millner. The offensive line also has some concerns with just two starters back for the upcoming year with center Matthew Cindric and tackle Ben Coleman as the lone two returning.

SP+ Predicts UNLV 2022 Football Record

Sept. 17 vs. North Texas (ranked No. 28)

Seth Littrell’s is 37-36 and went to a bowl game in each of the past two seasons in Denton, Texas. The offense used to be the main selling point for recruits to come to town but ever since Graham Harrell left as offensive coordinator, the passing game has taken a downturn but late last year they switched to a more run-heavy attack.

The team did win five in a row to cap the 2022 season, so the change to a ground attack is suiting this team nicely. The quarterback room could be more consistent as it completed just over 50% of its passes. Expect for Austin Aune to be the starting quarterback when they face UNLV.

Oct. 22 at Notre Dame (ranked No. 27)

The Irish have a new head coach in Marcus Freeman who was promoted from defensive coordinator when Brian Kelly decided to leave for LSU. Despite the change in leadership and staff shakeup, Notre Dame is a preseason top 10 team and has playoff aspirations.

The Irish do have a new quarterback in Tyler Buchner who saw some playing time as a freshman last year. Buchner used his feet to make plays when he saw time but he needs to be more polished as a passer. He does have help with tight end Michael Mayer who might just be the best tight end in Irish history as a key weapon.

Former Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden takes over the defense and he has big shoes to fill as Freeman helmed a well above average, if not elite, Irish defense. Golden most recently was the linebackers coach during the Cincinnatti Bengals turnaround which included a Super Bowl run just this past season.

Miami University vs North Texas Frisco Football Classic Bowl Preview

If you’re going to make up a bowl game at the last possible second out of thin air – just because – you’re not going to send two boring teams that might grind down in a defensive slugfest. No, you want big plays, offense, and two teams that will be jacked to get the opportunity.

There were two more bowl eligible teams than slots available with a San Francisco-based bowl canceling this year, so the Frisco Bowl Classic – not to be confused with the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl – was invented just before all of the matchups were announced.

In comes North Texas after overcoming a 1-6 start to win five straight to get here. The running game went wild late in the season with over 320 yards in three of the last four games.

Miami University probably would’ve had a slot somewhere else, but the extra bowl locked it in. It won four of its last six games thanks to a high-powered passing game that rolled for 200 yards or more in every game but the opener against Cincinnati, and bombed away for over 1,400 over the last four games.

Can the RedHawks stop the run? Sort of, but not really. Can the Mean Green stop the pass? Sort of, but not really. So let’s have some fun on a Thursday afternoon.
