Awful Announcing documents criticism of Jason Garrett

What did you think of Garrett’s season-opening broadcast?

As the Week 0 game with the highest profile, Notre Dame-Navy drew a large audience hungry for college football. That meant extended exposure for fill-in play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle and color commentator Jason Garrett on NBC.

Garrett and regular play-by-play announcer Jac Collinsworth, who missed Saturday’s broadcast, both have become frequent targets for Irish fans for the quality of their announcing. Without Collinsworth, Garrett received the brunt of criticism for the season opener, and sports media website Awful Announcing kept track of some of the tweets containing that criticism.

One series of tweets Awful Announcing chose to focus on were those saying Sam Hartman hasn’t worked with a running back like Audric Estime when the Seattle Seahawks’ Kenneth Walker III had played with Hartman at Wake Forest. Awful Announcing also highlighted tweets criticizing Garrett’s repeated mentions of the Midshipmen’s “mental toughness.” Still other tweets didn’t like what was perceived as Garrett’s lack of enthusiasm or energy.

We’ve had only one NBC broadcast in 2023, but social media already is in midseason form. There’s no place for critiques of Garrett to go but up. Who knows what’s in store for Collinsworth when he presumably returns for the Irish’s home opener this coming weekend?

What the experts are predicting: Notre Dame vs. Navy

Do you expected the one-sidedness of this rivalry to continue?

Notre Dame is facing longtime rival Navy in Ireland in Week 0 of the 2023 college football season. It only makes sense that we begin our series of football Saturdays with a matchup that goes back nearly a century with only one interruption. The people of the Emerald Isle will see this game on their turf for the third time, so they should know what to expect by now.

Let’s look at what some college football experts are predicting for this game:

Pat’s POV: 10 Things to Watch in Week 0

What are we watching for in Week 0?

Saturday marks the official beginning of the 2023 college football season. The slate of games isn’t one that gives a lot of great matchups but for some teams, it will begin to answer a few questions.

The first matchup will give us the Notre Dame Fighting Irish facing the Navy Midshipmen in Dublin, Ireland. The final game of the day will put the Florida International Panthers against the Lousiana Tech Bulldogs.

As the season begins, we break down 10 items to pay attention to for Week 0 despite the lack of big-time matchups to open the season. We will begin our preview across the pond in the Emerald Isle.

Is it possible we’re going to get an expanded 12-team College Football Playoff by 2024? That’s the hot rumor, but it’s probably not going to happen as soon as everyone might like.

How awesome would the expansion be this year after how things appear to be shaping up after a wild Week 2?

When this happens – scroll down for the full explanation from the CFP about how this is going to work – the top six ranked conference champions are in, the top four get a bye, and the higher seeds get the home campus advantage in the first round before they go to the big bowls in the second.

What’s the point of this? It’s going to be really, really hard to be one of those six non-champions to get in.

Here’s how it would likely project as things stands right now – and if they expanded this year.

[lawrence-related id=550796]

Top Four Projected Seeds After Week 2
 (top four conference champions)

1. Georgia (SEC): Sugar Bowl
2. Ohio State (Big Ten): Rose Bowl
3. Clemson (ACC): Orange Bowl
4. Oklahoma (Big 12): Cotton Bowl

At-Large Seeds

12. Cincinnati (American Athletic Conference Champion) at
5. Alabama (SEC)

11. BYU (Independent) at
6. Michigan (Big Ten)

10. Michigan State (Big Ten) at
7. USC (Pac-12 Champion)

9. Kentucky (SEC) at
8. Oklahoma State (Big 12)

Here’s how it’s going to work (this comes from the College Football Playoff):

1. The 12 teams will be the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the six highest-ranked teams not included among the six highest-ranked conference champions.

2. The ranking of the teams will continue to be done by a selection committee whose size, composition, and method of selection will remain substantially unchanged.

3. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye.

4. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.

5. The model allows for first-round games to be played on either the second or third weekend in December in a way that best accommodates the format and the participating teams, with at least 12 days between the conference championship games and the first-round games. The Management Committee would make the final determination of the calendar.

6. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four quarterfinal games and two Playoff Semifinal games would be played in bowls on a rotating basis.

7. The national championship game will continue to be played at a neutral site.

8. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be assigned to quarterfinals bowls on selection day in ranking order, and in consideration of current contract bowl relationships if those bowls are selected for the rotation. For example, if the Pac-12 champion were ranked #1, the Big Ten champion were ranked #3, and the Rose Bowl were a quarterfinal site, the Pac-12 champion would be assigned to the Rose Bowl and the Big Ten champion would be assigned elsewhere.

9. With the four highest-ranked champions assigned to quarterfinal games in bowls, the opponent from first-round game winners will be assigned by the selection committee based on the bracket.

10. The higher seeds would receive preferential placement in the Playoff Semifinal games.

2022 CFN College Football Schedule & Results

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 1

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 1 of the college football season?

It’s way too early for the bowl projections to be this tough.

There were always too many teams for bowl slots throughout the offseason, and now others that didn’t seem like they’d be in the mix – Southern Miss, Ohio, and possible Old Dominion, South Alabama, Rutgers, and Arizona – have to at least be considered.

If you don’t see your school in here, relax. This will be fluid with drastic changes every week.

There’s also the potential problem of the Big Ten and Big 12 not having enough slots for all the eligible teams. That will work itself out, too.

And then there’s the craziness of the College Football Playoff, which has suddenly become a little less obvious than it previously seemed.

With all of that in mind, here are the latest bowl projections.

We’re not getting an expanded 12-team College Football playoff until 2026 – or maybe a year or two earlier if everything breaks right.

Contracts and logistics aside, what would the playoff be like if it started this season? Here’s the projection after Week 1 of what it might be.

This would go by the rankings from the College Football Playoff committee – not the AP or Coaches polls.

2022 CFN College Football Schedule & Results

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 0

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after a light opening over the college football season?

Usually there aren’t many big changes to the bowl projections after Week 0 – especially when almost everything goes according to plan – but a few things happened since we came out with our 2022 Preview version.

Northwestern beating Nebraska was the biggest one of the bunch – even if that has nothing to do with the College Football Playoff predictions.

Like the preseason bowl projections, though, the goal is to come up with a starting point to work off of. Remember, ESPN is going to try creating the biggest and best matchups possible, and that includes shoehorning in a few eligible Big Ten teams. That might mean a bowl tie-in is blown off, and it could mean that ESPN creates a bowl game for more inventory.

For now, if you don’t see your team here – especially if it’s a Power Five program – assume that if it gets to six wins it’ll find a home somewhere no matter what. We didn’t want to get too crazy yet … at least until a switched up College Football Playoff projection.

For everything else, we’ll assume most bowl ties will stay put.

Winners and losers from college football’s ‘Week 0’

Some teams stood out for the right reasons. Others… not so much.

Well, that was fun!

The long offseason finally came to an end on Saturday, and though no ranked teams took the field during the preliminary Week 0 action, fans were treated to a handful of exciting college football games.

The headliner was the Big Ten matchup between Nebraska and Northwestern in Dublin, in which the Cornhuskers squandered an 11-point lead in a 31-28 loss that does not bode well for fifth-year coach Scott Frost, who may be coaching for his job in 2022.

With the first weekend of college football in the books, here’s who stood out — for either the right or wrong reasons.

Where LSU sits in the updated ESPN Football Power Index’s top 25 after Week 0

The FPI saw a slight shakeup after Week 0

The Tigers weren’t one of the select few teams in action during Saturday’s Week 0, but its opening opponent was.

Florida State beat Duquesne 47-7 in a tuneup and was one of the highest-profile teams to play. Conference opponent North Carolina also took the field, beating a shorthanded Florida A&M team comfortably. Northwestern also took down Nebraska to begin Big Ten play with a 1-0 record.

Though no teams in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll or AP Top 25 played, ESPN’s Football Power Index saw a shakeup in its top 25 after the Tar Heels dropped out.

Here’s what the rankings look like after Week 0, including where the Tigers sit.

What we learned about Florida State, LSU’s Week 1 foe, in win over Duquesne

The Seminoles began with a 47-7 Week 0 tuneup win against the Dukes before heading to New Orleans next weekend.

Unlike most teams in their season opener, LSU will have the ability to scout some 2022 film of the year’s first opponent.

Florida State and third-year coach Mike Norvell began the season with a Week 0 matchup against FCS opponent Duquesne on Saturday. After a lengthy weather delay, the Seminoles easily waltzed to a 47-7 win, the first time they’ve started 1-0 since 2016.

However, if Norvell wants to get to 2-0, he’ll face a much stiffer challenge in Week 1 when he takes his FSU team into what will likely be a very LSU-friendly crowd at the Superdome next Sunday.

Despite the quality of the opponent, the Seminoles did show some things that could prove challenging for the Tigers — namely, their ground game.

FSU ran all over the Dukes, accounting for 406 yards and six touchdowns on 54 carries. Three Seminoles backs eclipsed the 100-yard mark. This isn’t exactly surprising, as Florida State was fairly effective on the ground last fall, as well. It returns Jordan Travis, a dual-threat quarterback who has flashed some positives as a passer but has made the bulk of his contributions in the run game.

Interestingly, Travis’ legs were a non-factor on Saturday. He only attempted to run four times for 11 yards, though he did score a touchdown on the ground. Norvell is likely preserving his veteran quarterback, and the Tigers can probably expect a much more run-centric game from Travis next weekend.

Through the air, he was adequate. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 207 yards, and though he didn’t throw a passing touchdown, he also avoided turnovers and allowed the running game to stretch the lead.

Defensively, it’s hard to find fault with what the Seminoles did. They allowed just 164 yards of offense despite losing one of the best defensive players in the country from a year ago in Jermaine Johnson II, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Still, LSU and one of the best offensive weapons in the nation in [autotag]Kayshon Boutte[/autotag] pose a different challenge entirely.

It was certainly a cathartic way for FSU to start the season, but if coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the Tigers can keep the running game in check, they have to like their chances to open the year with a Power Five non-conference win.
