HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl What Happened

UAB RB Jermaine Brown overcame an earlier fumble with a 12-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-1 to cap off a 70-yard drive to take the 24-20 lead with 1:31 to play. Miami University made it interesting in the final moments, but on the UAB 15 with one second to go, the final pass to Miles Marshall came up just short – he was tackled on the two-yard line as time ran out.

UAB star RB DeWayne McBride – the nation’s leading rusher – opted out just before the game. Brown was able to fill in and finish with 116 yards and two scores.

The UAB offensive line took over late. Miami University was missing a slew of key parts, but it took advantage of a few UAB mistakes to stay in the game in the second half. When the Blazers needed the big scoring drive, they hammered way, but the D had to hang on for dear life at the very end.

2022-2023 Bowl Schedule, Predictions

HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl Player of the Game

Reynard Ellis, LB UAB
He came up with a team-high 10 tackles, with a half a sack, but it’s all about his tenth stop that saved the game, stopping Jalen Walker on the two-yard line in the final moments.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 20-27

HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl Fun Stats

– Turnovers: UAB 3, Miami University 0. However, MU PK Graham Nicholson missed his lone field goal attempt off of one of the Blazer turnovers.

– Miami University was 4-of-5 on fourth downs. UAB was 1-of-3, but that one was the game-winning touchdown.

– In the heat of the Bahamas – both teams were struggling in the 80+ degrees – UAB had the ball for 33:27, Miami 26:33.

HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl What It All Means

The win makes it a winning season for UAB. It was a bit rocky, but it sent out head coach Bryant Vincent with a 7-6 final season, and now it’s Trent Dilfer’s program to run. With the win, UAB has now had six straight winning seasons since being off for two years. Before that, it went ten years without a winning campaign.

Miami University put up a great fight considering all the key players missing. Two yards – that’s all that came between the RedHawks and a winning campaign. It was still a solid year under head coach Chuck Martin, but it’s the program’s first losing season since 2017.

Miami University RedHawks Preview 2022

Miami University needs to start getting at least a little bit of respect as a MAC power under Chuck Martin.

It took a long while to get to this point, but the program is here after winning the MAC Championship in 2019 as a part of a nice run of three straight winning seasons.

There’s nothing flashy about what the RedHawks do – no one seemed to notice the high-powered passing season – and they haven’t come up with the big, splashy non-conference wins like some of the other key teams in the conferences pull off – getting whacked by Cincinnati all the time hurts and getting dropped by Ohio State 76-5 in 2019 didn’t help – but they take care of what they need to.

Four of last year’s six losses came by a total of nine points on the way to a bowl win over North Texas, and this year’s version has the potential to be even stronger.

The offense should be among the most efficient in the MAC, the defense loaded up with a slew of new guys, and it should be a fourth straight winning season.

And maybe a second MAC title in four seasons will make a splash.

Miami University RedHawks Preview 2022: Offense

Where did this come from? It was Air RedHawk with one of the nation’s best passing games for an offense that averaged 423 yards and 30 points per game. The O line was great at keeping defenses out of the backfield, but the running game wasn’t just okay.

Brett Gabbert bombed away for 26 touchdowns for a passing game that rolled up over 3,600 yards and 32 touchdowns with just eight picks. Backup AJ Meyer stepped in and threw for almost 1,000 yards with six picks, but he’s in the transfer portal.

Star receiver Jack Sorenson is done, but 48-catch veteran Mac Hippenhammer is back along with downfield threat tight end Jack Coldiron.

The veteran offensive line was great in pass protection, but now it has to blast away a bit more. Four starters are back to a group that allowed just 21 sacks and was tenth in the nation in fewest tackles for loss given up.

The four freshman backs from last year – and sophomore Tyre Shelton – are back. Keyon Mozee, Kevin Davis, Kenny Tracy, and Shelton combined for well over 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns. The O only averaged over five yards per carry twice.

Miami University RedHawks Preview 2022: Defense

There’s a little work to do on a defense that loses a whole slew of key parts. Leading tackler Ivan Pace if off to Cincinnati and star pass rusher Kameron Butler is taking off for Virginia. The defense finished second in the conference in scoring D and is getting a ton of help, but …

Butler is off, leading sacker Lonnie Phelps is gone to Kansas, and Dominique Robinson and Ben Kimpler are done, too. Even so, the defensive tackles should be strong enough to form a good rotation – Austin Ertl and Anthony Collier are solid veterans – and on the way is Corey Suttle from Iowa State for one of the end jobs.

Trying to step in for Pace in the middle of the linebacking corps is Ty Wise from Indiana, and second-leading tackler Matthew Salopek will play a sort of hybrid defensive back and linebacker.

The secondary gave up a few too many yards in high-scoring battles, and now stepping in to help is Nolan Johnson from East Carolina at one corner to work on the other side of leading pickoff guy John Saunders. Michael Dowell is coming in from Michigan State at safety.

Miami University vs North Texas Frisco Football Classic Bowl Preview

If you’re going to make up a bowl game at the last possible second out of thin air – just because – you’re not going to send two boring teams that might grind down in a defensive slugfest. No, you want big plays, offense, and two teams that will be jacked to get the opportunity.

There were two more bowl eligible teams than slots available with a San Francisco-based bowl canceling this year, so the Frisco Bowl Classic – not to be confused with the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl – was invented just before all of the matchups were announced.

In comes North Texas after overcoming a 1-6 start to win five straight to get here. The running game went wild late in the season with over 320 yards in three of the last four games.

Miami University probably would’ve had a slot somewhere else, but the extra bowl locked it in. It won four of its last six games thanks to a high-powered passing game that rolled for 200 yards or more in every game but the opener against Cincinnati, and bombed away for over 1,400 over the last four games.

Can the RedHawks stop the run? Sort of, but not really. Can the Mean Green stop the pass? Sort of, but not really. So let’s have some fun on a Thursday afternoon.

Kent State vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

It’s not as easy as stopping Kent State by stopping the run, but Miami University has the ability to hold its own for long stretches.

The RedHawks lead the MAC in run defense, the pass rush is good enough to get into the backfield and slow things down before they get started, and just as importantly, they have a passing game that can potentially keep up.

There was a strange brain-cramp against Ohio a few weeks ago, but other than that, Miami has been rolling on the way to being one step away from playing for the MAC title.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Kent State Will Win

Kent State has a defense now?

The offense is still the star – third in the nation in rushing and No. 1 in the MAC overall – but it stuffed Akron last week in a 38-0 win.

Yeah, it’s Akron, but considering the defense-optional nature of the team throughout the year, it’s a step.

Miami University has an offense, but it’s impossible to keep up the pace with the Golden Flashes when everything starts working.

The running game cranked up 410 rushing yards on the Zips just a few weeks after running for 360 in a win over Northern Illinois, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

It’s one game to see who plays Northern Illinois for the MAC Championship next week.

Miami will try to balance things out, but it doesn’t control the clock enough to grind out long drives. What it can do is bomb away deep and hit the big plays to make this a back-and-forth fight.

Who’s going to blink first? Kent State leads then nation in turnovers margin. Miami doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, but it’ll give up the one key play to be enough in a fabulous game.

Bowling Green vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Bowling Green Will Win

Bowling Green can’t play the role of spoiler – Miami University has to win next week against Kent State no matter what to take the MAC East – but it can certainly make things scary for a 5-5 RedHawk team tying to get bowl eligible.

The Falcons got rim-rocked by Toledo last week, but the offense was balanced and terrific the week before in a shocking win over Buffalo. Miami doesn’t make enough big plays in the secondary, the ground game has only hit the 200-yard mark once against FBS teams, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Miami University Will Win

Bowling Green’s offense doesn’t score enough.

The 56 hung on Buffalo aside, getting to 28 points is an issue for the Falcons – they didn’t do it against anyone but the Bulls.

Miami’s defense got into a fight with Ohio a few weeks ago, but it’s been among the best in the MAC in total defense and scoring D, allowing 23 points or fewer in eight of the last nine games.

Control the game with an offensive line that doesn’t allow plays behind the line, rely on the defense, assume Bowling Green will get hit with at least eight penalties.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Again, this game sort of doesn’t matter to Miami in the MAC race, but getting bowl eligible now is a must – it doesn’t want to take its chances at relying on a win over Kent State.

It’ll get it with a slow and controlled game against a Bowling Green defense that will give up third down conversion after third down conversion.

Buffalo vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Buffalo run defense is but a mere rumor.

From home run touchdown dashes from Ohio, to getting hammered by Bowling Green and Akron for over 220 yards each, to the Kent State FlashFast style of offense, everyone is getting fat on this front wall.

How bad is this? The Bulls are 113th in the nation against the run allowing an average of 200 yards per game.

Can Miami take advantage of opportunity? Not really.

The RedHawks wouldn’t might running, but it only came up with 200 yards twice this year and once was against LIU of the FCS world.

On the other side, the Bulls are rolling with close to 500 yards in three of the last four games with a great balance, a lot of explosion, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Miami University Will Win

The Miami offense is about to throw a whole lot.

Teams are used to running the ball at will on the Buffalo D, but that’s not really what the RedHawks do.

Brett Gabbert is coming off a 492-yard passing day with five scores against Ohio, the O has hit over 200 yards through the air against everyone but Cincinnati, and the Buffalo secondary can be thrown on.

Gabbert will get time – the Miami offensive line has been fantastic at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Teams are usually too busy running the ball on the UB D and don’t bother with throwing, but getting past 200 yards isn’t going to be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

Neither defense is doing anything to take the ball away, both teams are coming off of embarrassing losses – Miami lost to Ohio and Buffalo somehow managed to lose to Bowling Green – and now it’s do-or-die time for any hopes of going bowling.

And Miami University is still in the MAC East title chase.

MU will get the running game going for the first time in a while, and the passing attack will work, too. The RedHawk defense will step up against the run, but Buffalo will throw well enough to stay in this. It won’t be enough.

It’s going to be surprisingly fun because neither side will stop the other. Miami will stop Buffalo more.

Miami University vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The RedHawks are on a roll – and just in time.

They’re deep in the mix for the MAC East title – it’s relatively smooth sailing until what should be the game for the division at Kent State to close out the regular season – and they’ve figured out how to win good battles.

They’re on a run of three wins in the last four games, the passing game has been consistent, and they’re getting enough from the defensive and the offensive front to overcome a few problems.

They don’t turn the ball over, they hit the big pass plays, and they’re able to control games with their style, even though they don’t dominate the time of possession battle.

Ohio turns the ball over a tun, the defense has been a mess – especially against the run – and there won’t be enough of a pass rush to matter.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has played a whole lot better than its 1-7 record.

It might be one of the top under-the-radar disappointments of 2021, but they’re still battling hard. Ever since beating Akron, they’ve suffered gut punch after gut punch in three straight tough losses.

The offense, though, is doing a nice job. It’s not consistent in nay way, but Miami doesn’t have the type of offense that’s going to come out and put 50 on the board. The Bobcats should be able to keep this close throughout, if not take over if the ground attack is working.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Miami keep Ohio from throwing well?

The RedHawks aren’t allowing anything on the ground over the last month, and Ohio is coming off a 308-yard passing day from Kurtis Rourke.

Miami keeps playing tight games and finds ways to win. Ohio keeps playing tight games and manages to lose. That’s about to flip in Athens in a quirky Tuesday night game.

Ball State vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

Are the Cardinals starting to make their move?

Excuse me. Are the defending MAC champion Cardinals starting to make their move?

The dominant win over Western Michigan set the tone after the loss to Toledo, and following it up with the victory over Eastern Michigan was massive.

The passing game was terrific against the Broncos, the ground game rumbled against the Eagles, and now it all needs to work against a Miami team that can’t seem to get the season rolling.

The RedHawks haven’t won two games in a row. There aren’t enough takeaways, the offense isn’t good enough in the red zone, and the offense hasn’t been consistent. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami University Will Win

When the ground attack works Miami usually wins.

It’s all relative. Since opening the season with a loss to Cincinnati, the RedHawks are 3-0 when running for 164 yards or more – there were some passing yards to go along with the rushing production, too – but when the team can’t run, forget it.

Ball State’s run defense has been fine overall, but it allowed more than 164 rushing yards in four of the last six games and was hurt through the air in the two games when the run D rocked.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Miami just doesn’t do enough to take the ball away, and Ball State will generate two takeaways.

Both teams will sputter on the ground, but at home, the Cardinals will get just a little more out of the defense and QB Drew Plitt will come up with a sharp performance.

Miami University vs Akron Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

The Zip passing game is actually working – it came up with 200 yards or more in three of the last four games.

Don’t dismiss that – Akron only threw for over 200 yards once last year and just twice in the previous 14 games before this run.

Freshman Konata Mumpfield has turned into a playmaker, coming up with a touchdown in each of his last five games and two – along with his first 100-yard day – in the win over Bowling Green.

Miami’s passing game has been okay in terms of consistency – it’s not turning the ball over – but the quarterbacks are combining to hit just 51% of their passes. However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami University Will Win

The passing yards are there. It might not always be pretty or consistent, but it’s gone past 200 yards in every game since the loss to Cincinnati.

It’s asking a lot, but Miami got to 500 yards of total offense in the two wins and it’s 0-4 when coming up with 385 or fewer. Akron has allowed over 385 yards against everyone but Bowling Green and Bryant – the two Zip wins.

Overall, Akron is miserable on third downs and the offensive front is awful when it comes to defenses out of the backfield.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Miami might not be playing like it’s supposed to, but it can’t have a problem at home against Akron is there’s any hope of making a push in the MAC race and for a bowl spot.

The season isn’t necessarily over in the RedHawks don’t win this – but they will.

The offense will be a bit more consistent and the defense will get the job done with a slew of plays in the backfield to stuff Akron on third down after third down.
