LSU vs Auburn Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

Shhhhhhhhh, LSU is actually pretty good.

Forgotten about by the college football nation after the weird loss to Florida State to kick things off, Brian Kelly’s club came up with easy wins over Southern and New Mexico, and it rallied back late in a strong win over Mississippi State.

The passing game has been great – more on the problems with that in a moment – and the running game stepped up with over 200 yards in each of the last three games.

The defense held up against the Mississippi State passing game, the run defense wasn’t bad against Florida State, and now it gets to go against an Auburn offense that can’t move the chains, can’t get the passing game going, and it isn’t getting enough production from the offensive line.

The LSU D line should be able to take over, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Auburn Will Win

Is Jayden Daniels okay?

The Arizona State transfer quarterback has been great so far for LSU. He almost pulled the Florida State game out of the fire, he came through in the fourth quarter against Mississippi State, and he did whatever he wanted against New Mexico before getting knocked out with a back injury.

He’s supposed to be fine, but the LSU offense needs him to shine on the road in what should be an interesting environment.

The weather isn’t supposed to be horrible, but it’s likely going to rain with just enough wind to matter – that might be a bit of a differentiating factor for a team that’s struggling so much offensively.

Keep the score low, rely on a run defense that had problems against Penn State but has held up okay overall, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The LSU running game should take over.

Auburn’s defense has been fine, but Penn State was able to rumble well, and Missouri almost-and-should’ve come up with the overtime win last week before the unfortunate fumble near the end zone saved Auburn’s day.

Auburn has to win the turnover battle, but it won’t. It has to outgain LSU on the ground, but it won’t.

It’ll be a low scoring and interesting fight, but LSU will come up with the key plays the home side won’t.

LSU vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

The Lobos are scoring a little bit.

They’re not ripping it up, but they’re averaging 27 points per game – that’s a lot considering how rough it was to get things moving last year.

The running game was solid in the win over UTEP, the defense forced seven takeaways in the victory – New Mexico is fourth in the nation in takeaways – and they’re applying enough defensive pressure to give LSU a hard time.

The Tigers aren’t hitting enough downfield plays, the line is allowing three sacks per game, the special teams continue to be rocky, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why LSU Will Win

That’s the LSU everyone thought was possible.

Had the Tigers started the season off with a warm-up game against Southern instead of Florida State – instead of kicking off against FSU and playing the Jaguars the following week – they’d probably be 3-0. They’re just starting to find a bit of a groove, and it came together with a terrific performance in the win over Mississippi State.

The pass defense was solid in the 31-16 victory, the offense was perfectly balanced, and New Mexico won’t be able to do much more to get things going.

Yeah, the Lobo offense is better than the 2021 version. It’s still not great.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico will come up with a few takeaways and be just annoying enough defensively to make LSU fans a little bit grouchy.

The Tiger running game will take over, the offense will rise up in the second quarter to take control, and there won’t be any sort of a threat from the Lobo O to make anyone sweat.

It won’t be a perfect performance, but it’s all starting to build under Brian Kelly.

Mississippi State vs LSU Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The offense has been fantastic.

The Bulldogs haven’t had any true layup games yet – Memphis and at Arizona to start the season – and everything worked without much of a hitch.

Will Rogers and the passing attack are rolling, the defense has been great overall, and the team has somewhat quietly plays as well as anyone in the SEC not named Georgia.

Meanwhile, LSU struggled against Florida State, was great against Southern – the result against the Noles might have been very, very different if the first two games were turned around – and there’s still a question over whether or not the team is sharp yet.

The defense has been solid overall, but it hasn’t dealt with anything like Mississippi State is bringing. It’s too sharp, too productive, and too efficient so far.

LSU hasn’t come up with enough of a pass rush so far to matter.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why LSU Will Win

Hello, Jayden Daniels.

The transfer quarterback from Arizona State didn’t get enough credit for almost pulling the FSU game out of the fire, and then he took target practice against Southern. So far he has hit 78% of his passes with five touchdowns and no picks, and he took off for 132 yards and a score. That’s set. The quarterback situation is solid.

Everything else should start to come together with a little more time.

As is, the Tigers have the talent in the secondary to hold up against what’s coming from Rogers and the hot receiving corps, the MSU D isn’t getting into the backfield enough to bother Daniels, and then there are the turnovers.

It’s the cost of doing business in the Mississippi State offense, but the five giveaways in two games are concerning, and LSU’s defense has generated six takeaways.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This will be one of Saturday’s hidden gems.

There aren’t any massive national games, but this will turn into one considering all of the storylines.

What happens if Brian Kelly starts 1-2? What happens if Mississippi State is 3-0 and looks fantastic? What happens if LSU pulls this off and starts to look the part?

Mississippi State might not have everything in place, and there are a slew of flaws that will be exposed at some point – the turnovers have to chill out – but it won’t be this week.

The Bulldog run defense has been terrific, Rogers is too hot, and it’ll be a terrific win in a fun back-and-forth battle.

LSU vs Southern Game Preview

Why Southern Will Win

Everyone playing in this game who beat a Florida team last weekend, raise your hand.

Not so fast, LSU.

All the Southern Jaguars did was put up 86 points – scoring 42 in the first quarter with over 600 yards of total offense highlighted by close to 400 yards on the ground. Granted it was against Florida Memorial University – it’s in Miami – but it was still an awesome offensive performance.

Southern has a nice dual threat quarterback in Besean McCray, the ground game is for real, it’s getting LSU on a short week, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why LSU Will Win

That blocked extra point by Florida State was the worst thing that could happen to Southern.

You think LSU is going to be a wee bit surly?

The Tigers lost 24-23 as they played like a team that desperately needed to play Southern first to get the tune-up out of the way.

There’s a lot to work on. The passing game has to be sharper, there has to be more plays down the field, the special teams need to be night-and-day better, and the base needs to see something big out of Brian Kelly, just because it wants to.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

With Mississippi State coming up next, LSU will look to rest as many key parts as possible. But there’s a whole lot of stuff to do first.

The team doesn’t just need an ego boost, it has to be far sharper. The team needs a live scrimmage, and it’s about to get it. It’ll get up fast, and then will chill over the last 20 minutes.

LSU vs Florida State Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

406 rushing yards.

Duquesne might not exactly be LSU on the defensive front, but Florida State got the exact type of Week 0 performance everyone is looking for out of a game like that.

There were weather issues, and the scoring slowed down a bit in the 47-7 win, but three Seminoles ran for over 100 yards, the offensive line was opening up holes to give everyone move, and the O looked exactly like it’s supposed to under head coach Mike Norvell.

That might not just happen against Duquesne.

All of the pieces are there for the FSU offense to keep ripping off yards in chunks. LSU’s defense is going to be good right away – at least the talent is place – but if the Seminole offensive line is able to hold serve in pass protection, the production should be there.

However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why LSU Will Win

Florida State’s defense is going to have it much, much tougher this week.

There wasn’t anything big put on tape – the Noles didn’t need to go crazy defensively with a slew of blitzes or plays in the backfield – but the ends have to generate pressure to help out a talented – but inconsistent – secondary that has to deal with the loaded LSU receiving corps.

It’s all going to start with the lines for the Tigers. Three good blockers are coming in from the transfer portal to get the running game going, the defensive front six is going to keep bringing the heat and pressure from all sides, and the speed and athleticism are there in the linebacking corps to figure out the FSU running attack as the game goes on.

New head coach Brian Kelly has the guys. Now we get to see how quickly he can make them all fit.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

The LSU fan base is expecting big things right away.

This isn’t a rebuilding job at LSU – there are enough new guys from the transfer portal to go along with the already strong base to expect massive things right away.

However, Florida State has been getting better, it has more playmakers now than it did over the last few seasons, and it’s going to have its moments.

LSU’s defense, though, will have bigger moments on third downs in the second half.

The Tiger team will be flying around over the last 20 minutes, the offense will be balanced, and Kelly will get out with a strong first win to kickoff his era.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Bryce Young, Jr. Alabama

Yeah, of course the reigning Heisman winner who came really, really close to pulling out a national championship comes into the following season as the conference’s top offensive star. However, that’s not the given you might think it is considering just about ever SEC team has a quarterback talented enough to be a problem on any given Saturday.

The transfer portal brought LSU Jayden Daniels from Arizona State. Ole Miss got Jaxson Dart from USC and South Carolina got a gem in Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma. Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson have the pro scouts drooling, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is special, and Mississippi State’s Will Rogers might lead the SEC in passing.

Meanwhile, a few of those big names are in battles for the starting job, and the one guy not mentioned – Stetson Bennett – quarterbacked his team to the national title.

The SEC is loaded with passers who could start just about anywhere else outside of the conference, and Young is the best of the bunch. He might not be huge, he might not have a cannon, and he doesn’t run much, but he reads everything, is deadly accurate, and he’s about to make a big push to repeat as the Heisman winner after hitting 67% of his passes for 4,872 yards and 37 touchdowns with seven picks.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Will Anderson, Jr. Alabama

It wasn’t just that Anderson was a pass rushing terror on a defense loaded with NFL prospect, it’s that he didn’t stop until Georgia held him in relative check in the national title – and the rest of the D took advantage of the attention paid to 31 – it was the consistency and alpha defender aspect to his game. Be shocked if the production doesn’t keep on rolling.

He came up with two or more tackles for loss in 11 games, made 101 stops on the season with 17.5 sacks and 33.5 tackles for loss. No one else had more than 22 tackles for loss – he was the only player to average over two per game – and only Army’s Andre Carter averaged more sacks per game – 1.19 to 1.17.
