2022 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Bryce Young, Jr. Alabama

Yeah, of course the reigning Heisman winner who came really, really close to pulling out a national championship comes into the following season as the conference’s top offensive star. However, that’s not the given you might think it is considering just about ever SEC team has a quarterback talented enough to be a problem on any given Saturday.

The transfer portal brought LSU Jayden Daniels from Arizona State. Ole Miss got Jaxson Dart from USC and South Carolina got a gem in Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma. Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson have the pro scouts drooling, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is special, and Mississippi State’s Will Rogers might lead the SEC in passing.

Meanwhile, a few of those big names are in battles for the starting job, and the one guy not mentioned – Stetson Bennett – quarterbacked his team to the national title.

The SEC is loaded with passers who could start just about anywhere else outside of the conference, and Young is the best of the bunch. He might not be huge, he might not have a cannon, and he doesn’t run much, but he reads everything, is deadly accurate, and he’s about to make a big push to repeat as the Heisman winner after hitting 67% of his passes for 4,872 yards and 37 touchdowns with seven picks.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Will Anderson, Jr. Alabama

It wasn’t just that Anderson was a pass rushing terror on a defense loaded with NFL prospect, it’s that he didn’t stop until Georgia held him in relative check in the national title – and the rest of the D took advantage of the attention paid to 31 – it was the consistency and alpha defender aspect to his game. Be shocked if the production doesn’t keep on rolling.

He came up with two or more tackles for loss in 11 games, made 101 stops on the season with 17.5 sacks and 33.5 tackles for loss. No one else had more than 22 tackles for loss – he was the only player to average over two per game – and only Army’s Andre Carter averaged more sacks per game – 1.19 to 1.17.

2021 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Kevin Harris, Jr. South Carolina

It was impossible to put together the SEC Top 30 Players list – it could’ve been a top 50 list and several great players would’ve been missing – and it’s just as nasty to try coming up with one signature preseason offensive star going into the season.

Texas A&M is loaded with weapons, Georgia will have its share of stars, and of course Alabama will replace the former all-time greats with new ones. For now, going into the season, Harris is the safe call – knowing that another Joe Burrow, or DeVonta Smith, or Mac Jones is right around the corner.

And there’s a chance Harris doesn’t even have to handle all the work with the expected return of MarShawn Lloyd from a knee injury. Even so, the 5-10, 225-pound Harris is a proven star for a team that needs as many reliable parts as it can get.

Harris ran for an SEC-best 114 rushing yards per game with 1,138 yards and 15 scores averaging over six yards per carry, and at least early on under Shane Beamer, he’s going to be the one to work the attack around.

2021 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

CB Derek Stingley Jr., Soph. LSU

You’re going to probably need to go off of respect and sheer talent when it comes to acknowledging – arguably – the best player in college football this season. The future likely NFL Pro Bowl star might not have a whole lot to do with team after team staying away from him.

Blow off the stats – or the lack of them – going forward. He only made 27 tackles with five broken up passes and no picks last year, and that might be around what he does this season. The better passing teams will go at him once in a while – Eli Ricks is no picnic on the other side – but not often.

2020 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

WR Ja’Marr Chase, Jr. LSU
Justin Jefferson caught 111 passes, and there were a whole slew of other weapons for Joe Burrow to throw to, but Chase was the Biletnikoff winner as the nation’s best receiver with the greatest season by any wideout in SEC history.

He cranked up 84 catches for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns. To put that into perspective, he had as many receiving scores or more than all but 58 of the 130 FBS teams, and he had more receiving yards than nine teams.

The SEC is loaded once again with tremendous receiving talent, and Chase doesn’t have Burrow around anymore, but he’s still going to be one of the most dangerous all-around weapons in the country.

2020 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

CB Derek Stingley, Soph. LSU
LSU safety Grant Delpit won the Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back. He wasn’t event best defensive back on his own team last year – actually, he might have been fourth in the mix – behind Stingley, the lockdown star who came into LSU as a big-time recruit, and showed why right away.

The 6-1, 195-pounder led the team with six interceptions, 15 broken up passes, and 38 tackles. There’s some reloading to do in the Tiger secondary, and the stats aren’t going to be as good for Stingley – no one will throw his way – but he’s an NFL starting corner who’ll still be around the college world for the next few seasons.
