Alabama vs LSU Game Preview

Why Alabama Will Win

Even with the easy win over Mississippi State, this looked like a team that desperately needed to take a deep breath.

It was a rocky first two months of the season, but now it’s Game On with showdowns against LSU and Ole Miss before dealing with Austin Peay and Auburn at home. First. the Crimson Tide have to get by the Tigers for the 11 time in 12 tries.

It took arguably the greatest team of all-time for LSU – the Joe Burrow 2019 version – to provide a break in the gloom.

This is a decent Tiger team that ripped through Ole Miss and beat Florida to get the O going over the last few games, but there isn’t enough of a pass rush to bother Bryce Young, and the offensive line is about to be in for a long day.

Speaking of a group that should come out rejuvenated, here comes the Alabama pass rush against an LSU line that’s the second-worst in the SEC in sacks allowed.

But …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why LSU Will Win

With all due respect to Mr. Hooker over at Tennessee and the guy on the other side of the field …

Jayden Daniels is playing as well as any quarterback in the SEC.

He’s running well – 121 yards and three scores against Ole Miss after running for three touchdowns against Florida – and he’s not missing much of anything through the air, connecting on 73% of his throws with six scores and a pick in the last three games.

Mississippi State didn’t have any luck against the Crimson Tide defensive backs with its short-range passing game, but Daniels has to start pushing deep from the start.

Texas and Tennessee kept pressing down the field, the defensive backs kept struggling, and everything else opened up.

However …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

LSU doesn’t bomb away – it’s averaging just 11.3 yards per completion.

Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee – it’s not like Alabama has been great on the road so far, and now it gets a night game in Death Valley.

There won’t be anything tricky about this. Alabama will start running early, turn the pass rush loose to pressure Daniels, and Bryce Young should be just accurate enough to own third downs to control the clock.

It’ll take about a half to get there, and then the Bama lines will take over. Two third quarter scoring drives will be enough to let the Tide offense finally settle in.

Ole Miss vs LSU Game Preview

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The offense isn’t getting the national love last year’s version received, but that’s because 1) Tennessee is sucking all of the oxygen out of the SEC room and 2) no one has seen what this thing can really do.

Kentucky – maybe – was the only time America made Ole Miss football appointment watching without a slew of compelling games on the slate so far. However, it’s got a tougher ground attack than the 2021 version, there’s an excellent balance, and the defense is holding up just fine.

LSU doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush, and that’s a killer against this bunch. Give Jaxson Dart time to operate, and the third-best team in college football on third downs will keep the chains moving.

The Rebel offensive line has been fantastic so far, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why LSU Will Win

Again, Kentucky was the one good game on the slate, and Ole Miss came up with a season-low 399 yards and needed a huge defensive break late to pull off the 22-19 win – and that was at home.

The toughest road game so far was Georgia Tech? Vanderbilt?

LSU might have been blasted by Tennessee 40-13 the last time out at home – and it was a day game, too – but it’s not like the Rebels have been stress-tested yet outside of that UK game.

The Tiger passing game has been working with 300 yards or more in three of the last four games, the ground attack is good enough, and the offense should be on the field for close to 35 minutes because …

What’s Going To Happen

LSU will be great on third downs.

When did Ole Miss have an issue defensively on third down? Take a guess – Kentucky. That was the only time it allowed an offense to hit more than 42%, and LSU is converting at a 48% rate.

However, that might not matter if the Rebel running game works like it’s supposed to. It won’t get to the 448 yards of last week, but it’ll push for 200 yards and allow over five yards per carry.

It’s hardly going to be easy, but Ole Miss will pull it out on a Jonathan Cruz field goal.

LSU vs Florida Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

The Tigers are better than they showed in the 40-13 loss to Tennessee last week.

All of a sudden the run defense stopped working, the two turnovers didn’t help, and the game got away from the team fast. On the plus side, Jayden Daniels was solid. The former Arizona State quarterback bounced back from a bad day in the win over Auburn to throw for 300 yards against the Vols.

He should be able to bomb away on a Gator secondary that’s been relatively great considering it dealt with Utah’s Cameron Rising, Kentucky’s Will Levis, and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker. However, it allowed big yards to all of them, and now it’s Daniels’ turn.

Florida’s defense is the worst in the SEC in third down stops, the run defense isn’t getting anything done, and the offense has been way too inconsistent.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Florida Will Win

Here comes the Gator running game.

Tennessee has a solid ground attack, and LSU made it look next-level special last week allowing too many gashes and too much control as it ripped off 263 yards and two scores. In an ideal Florida world, that’s what it wants to do.

New head coach Billy Napier’s offense is designed to get the running backs on the move in open areas – yeah, everyone tries that, but Florida doesn’t really bash like it could – and it helps to have a quarterback who can run like Anthony Richardson.

The Gators have been resilient. They’ve been through a slew of tough battles and survived the short week of two games in six days with a workmanlike effort win over Missouri last Saturday.

Turnovers have been a wee bit of a problem, but the penalties haven’t been bad, the offensive line is giving everyone time to work, and unlike Daniels in his offensive system, Richardson is connecting on enough big downfield throws to matter.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Florida is starting to get that ground attack going. It averaged over seven yards per carry against Missouri, and it’s going to do just enough to offset the LSU offense that’s about to be a whole lot sharper than it was against the Vols.

LSU will do a far better job of controlling the clock, and it’ll bounce back big from the bad day, but the Gator combination of run, run, run and big pass play will overcome the rocky D.

Tennessee vs LSU Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

That was a nice two weeks.

The Vols started the season 4-0 with a big, fun win over Florida going into a bye week break. As much as can be, they’re rested, they’ve had time to prepare, and now they get to go against an LSU team that’s been on a bit of a rough run.

The Tigers are playing well, but the Auburn game was tough, the Mississippi State was tough, now they have to get ready for a passing game that’s as efficient as any in college football. Hendon Hooker hasn’t thrown a pick, and he doesn’t have to force much thanks to a ground game that hit the 200-yard mark against everyone but Pitt.

That’s the No. 1 offense in college football rolling into Baton Rouge.

The defense is great on third downs and it has been strong against the run, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why LSU Will Win

The Tennessee defense hasn’t been anything great overall.

Anthony Richardson and Florida bombed away for over 450 yards, the pass rush has been hit or miss, and the secondary is allowing more yards per game than anyone in the SEC.

Jayden Daniels needs to kick it all back in.

The former Arizona State transfer quarterback has been a terrific playmaker so far, but he’s coming off a rough day against Auburn leading to a players-only meeting to try getting everyone on the same page.

Going against the Tennessee secondary should fix a slew of problems.

On the other side, the defense is doing a nice job of taking the ball away, it’s been great at not breaking too often after bending, and overall it has quietly been really, really good.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The LSU defense is the best Tennessee has had to face so far, and it’s going to show.

Hooker and the Vol offense will get things rolling to make this a back-and-forth fight, but Daniels and the LSU attack will keep up.

There haven’t been too many deep shots from Daniels so far – that’s about to change.

The Tiger offense will run well enough to take some of the pressure off, and the defense will come up with the one second half stop the Vols won’t.
