Kentucky vs Northern Illinois Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

The Huskies have been able to move the ball.

They went against the nation’s best passing team in Tulsa and lost in a good fight, and they couldn’t hold up last week as Vanderbilt roared back in a 38-28 win.

The O, though is great at closing out drives with points, the passing game has been strong so far, and the offensive line has been getting the job done giving Rocky Lombardi and company time to work.

Kentucky hasn’t been great in the red zone, there’s no rushing offense without Chris Rodriguez – he’s expected to be back in October – and the O line is getting star QB Will Levis beaten up.

But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Kentucky Will Win

The Northern Illinois secondary is about to have a bad day – again.

Eastern Illinois took target practice, Tulsa’s Davis Brin went off for 322 yards and four scores, and Vanderbilt was balanced enough to keep everything moving against the pass defense that’s allowing 284 yards per game.

This is where Will Levis comes in.

The world is in love with him as a pro prospect – he has the size and the arm – but he has been just okay. He’s hitting the downfield plays, and he had no problem against Miami University and Youngstown State, but he has thrown four picks and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Levis will throw for 300 yards, the Kentucky defense will be terrific, and Northern Illinois won’t be able to keep up.

The Huskies can’t get their defense off the field, and Levis will be happy to contribute with third down conversion after third down conversion.

As always, it won’t always be pretty for the Wildcats, but they’ll have few problems. Also, as always, the final score won’t be quite indicative of just how dominant the performance is.

Kentucky vs Youngstown State Game Preview

Why Youngstown State Will Win

The Penguins have been terrific so far.

After a rough three-win 2021, they came out 2-0 with the offense kicking in and the defense coming up big with lots and lots of plays in the backfield. The run defense hasn’t allowed a thing, giving up just 1.8 yards per carry helped by all of those tackles for loss.

Kentucky can’t get the ground game going with Chris Rodriguez out of the mix for a bit. Struggling against the Florida defense last week was one thing, but only managing 50 yards on 26 carries against Miami University wasn’t okay.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Kentucky Will Win

Youngstown State is doing just about everything right so far, but it’s not controlling the clock.

Kentucky doesn’t really deal with the time of possession side of things, but it’s great at owning the tempo and making teams slow things down.

The Wildcat defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown pass, shut down Anthony Richardson, and it should be solid enough to keep Demeatric Crenshaw and the Youngstown State passing attack from getting comfortable.

Rely on the D, expect Will Levis and the UK passing game to keep the mistakes to a minimum, and expect the game to grind on the way it likes.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This is dangerous.

Kentucky has a style and way of staying in the game against everyone, and it has a style and a way of keeping the other side in games, too.

UT Chattanooga scared the stuff out of the base last year in a 28-23 UK win, and Youngstown State has the ability to make this a fight.

The Wildcats are going to win, and it’s not like they’re going to look ahead to deal with Northern Illinois, but they’ll have a tough time getting through this after the fun of taking down the Gators.

Florida vs Kentucky Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

That’s what Kentucky does.

It’s not going to be splashy like Tennessee, or brutishly dominant like Georgia, and it certainly doesn’t have the talent of the top SEC West teams. It doesn’t matter.

The Wildcats are going to keep things moving, they’ll generate the defensive stops needed, and they’re going to make teams play at their pace.

Don’t dismiss the 37-13 win over Miami University – the RedHawks have a dangerous offense and should be a factor in the MAC race.

The defense will make Anthony Richardson try to win through the air as the linebackers keep him from making plays on the move – the plays in the backfield were there against MU.

Meanwhile, the offense has a star pro prospect of its own in QB Will Levis coming off a 303-yard performance. He’ll keep pushing a Gator secondary that had issues with the Utah passing game late, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Florida Will Win

The Gators should get a break against the run.

Kentucky would normally come into this looking to grind away – and it might if specifically wasn’t showing anything against Miami last week – but star RB Chris Rodriguez is still out of the mix.

Kavosiey Smoke and the UK running game didn’t go anywhere against the RedHawks, the offensive line had issues keeping the backfield clean, and the O isn’t bringing any more power than Utah delivered in Gainesville.

Richardson had a lot to do with it, but that was an elite Utah run defense that just got hit for 283 yards and over seven yards per dash. The Billy Napier offense knows how to get its runners in space to do big things, the pressure will be on Kentucky to try controlling the tempo even more than it normally does, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Florida vs Kentucky. You know how this works.

The Wildcats pulled off the win last year in Lexington. That was just the second win in the series since 1986, but it’s 2-2 over the last four years.

For all of the great things Richardson did in the win over Utah, and for all the amazing things the team did, it took a horrible, horrible decision by Ute QB Cameron Rising to get out alive.

The defense will come up with a late stop in this, only this time breaking up a Levis pass in the end zone to survive.

UK might be a football school now, but it has just one win in Gainesville since 1979. That’s not going to change.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Bryce Young, Jr. Alabama

Yeah, of course the reigning Heisman winner who came really, really close to pulling out a national championship comes into the following season as the conference’s top offensive star. However, that’s not the given you might think it is considering just about ever SEC team has a quarterback talented enough to be a problem on any given Saturday.

The transfer portal brought LSU Jayden Daniels from Arizona State. Ole Miss got Jaxson Dart from USC and South Carolina got a gem in Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma. Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson have the pro scouts drooling, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is special, and Mississippi State’s Will Rogers might lead the SEC in passing.

Meanwhile, a few of those big names are in battles for the starting job, and the one guy not mentioned – Stetson Bennett – quarterbacked his team to the national title.

The SEC is loaded with passers who could start just about anywhere else outside of the conference, and Young is the best of the bunch. He might not be huge, he might not have a cannon, and he doesn’t run much, but he reads everything, is deadly accurate, and he’s about to make a big push to repeat as the Heisman winner after hitting 67% of his passes for 4,872 yards and 37 touchdowns with seven picks.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Will Anderson, Jr. Alabama

It wasn’t just that Anderson was a pass rushing terror on a defense loaded with NFL prospect, it’s that he didn’t stop until Georgia held him in relative check in the national title – and the rest of the D took advantage of the attention paid to 31 – it was the consistency and alpha defender aspect to his game. Be shocked if the production doesn’t keep on rolling.

He came up with two or more tackles for loss in 11 games, made 101 stops on the season with 17.5 sacks and 33.5 tackles for loss. No one else had more than 22 tackles for loss – he was the only player to average over two per game – and only Army’s Andre Carter averaged more sacks per game – 1.19 to 1.17.

How do all the SEC head coaches do against the spread, and on the road ATS, and going over on the point total?
