Kentucky vs Missouri Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

Missouri’s offense isn’t Tennessee’s.

Kentucky actually did a better job defensively than the 44-6 loss to the Vols might indicate – that’s looking DEEP for a positive in that – keeping the high-powered attack to 422 yards. It was only the second time all year the Vols didn’t get to 500.

For all of the good things Missouri is doing, the offense isn’t going off. It only got past 270 yards against Abilene Christian and Louisiana Tech, the offensive line allows way too many plays behind the line, and turnovers have been a massive issue until …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Missouri Will Win

The South Carolina game. That might have been the big pivot the program needed.

The Tigers went to the other SEC Columbia and came out with a sharp 23-10 win, getting a decent day out of the passing game and a brilliant day from the SEC’s third-best defense.

Florida and Kansas State were the only teams easily able to run against this bunch, and that’s because their quarterbacks took off – that’s not Will Levis.

Even with the possible No. 1 pick in the draft under center, the Kentucky offense isn’t going off – it only came up with 98 passing yards against Tennessee’s then second-worst pass defense in the nation.

The Wildcats are going to struggle to get to 100 yards on the ground, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Missouri can play Kentucky’s game – it’s great at slowing things down a bit and controlling the clock.

It’s going to be about the turnovers. Kentucky has given it up multiple times in five of the last six games, and Missouri has forced two takeaways in three of the last four games.

Can the Tigers keep the mistakes to a minimum after giving it up seven times against Florida and Vanderbilt? Kentucky doesn’t do enough to force turnovers.

Kentucky vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

The Wildcats might have the right mix and blend to slow the machine down.

Kentucky normally isn’t great in the time of possession battle, but it’s holding the ball for close to 35 minutes per game this year, it’s decent at moving the chains, and the defense is keeping high-powered passing games from going off.

There isn’t any pass rush, but the D kept Mississippi State to just over 200 passing yards, Ole Miss is the only other attack to throw for two bills, and now it gets a Tennessee team that works fast, scores fast, is fast, but might get bogged down a bit.

And then there’s the UK passing attack. Will Levis should do whatever he wants against a Tennessee secondary that’s getting chewed up by everyone – UT Martin hit the nation’s second-worst pass defense for 316 yards last week.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Tennessee Will Win

Yeah, so Tennessee allows 330 passing yards per game. That’s the cost of doing business for a team with Hendon Hooker and the nation’s most dangerous offense.

It’s not just Hooker, WR Jalin Hyatt, and the high-powered passing game that’s second in the country in efficiency behind Ohio State. The running game is working just fine, too, to balance it out and keep the UK defense on its heels a bit.

Yeah, Kentucky will grind this down, and it’ll seem like the offense is on the field for 40 minutes – that’s because it will be – but Hooker can hit in a flash, the Vol defense should be able to take the ball away twice, and it can crank up the big plays the other side can’t.

For all of Tennessee’s problems on D, it’s solid in the red zone and it’s not bad on third downs. Kentucky can’t come up with empty trips at the end of its grinding drives.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky is a problem.

Everyone will be focusing on what’s next with Tennessee’s massive date against Georgia, but UK will bring something a little different with its style. It’ll be enough to hang around and make everyone freak out a bit, but …

The lack of a Wildcat pass rush will be an issue.

Hooker is deadly enough when he’s in a groove, but give him time to let the downfield plays to develop and forget it.

It’s going to be a 60-minute fight, but the Vols will get out alive with two good fourth quarter scoring drives.

And then it’ll be on to Athens.

Mississippi State vs Kentucky Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

He’s never going to get any Heisman love playing in a Mike Leach offense – no one seems to respect the stats like they should – and in a conference with Bryce Young, Hendon Hooker, Will Levis, and all the other star quarterbacks, but no one’s playing better than Will Rogers.

He’s winging it around 47 times a game, he hasn’t thrown an interception in the last three games and has 22 touchdown passes with just three picks on the season, and he’s making all the right decisions as the O seems to have slowed down for him.

Kentucky’s pass defense is fine, but South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler dinked dunked his way to a win last week hitting over 70% of his throws, and that cane a week after Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss threw for over 200 yards.

There isn’t any sort of a pass rush to bother Rogers, he’ll dink and dunk to his heart’s content, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Kentucky Will Win

Levis is pretty good, too.

He didn’t go against South Carolina with a foot problem, but he was able to practice enough this week and is ready to give it a go.

If the passing game isn’t clicking, this is when the running game has to finally step up.

The defense has been good enough, and the passing game is should be fine with Levis back, but the ground attack is averaging just 2.7 yards per carry and it hasn’t taken over like its should with the return of Chris Rodriguez a few weeks ago.

Mississippi State’s run defense was okay against a KJ Jefferson-less Arkansas, but it still allowed 241 yards. LSU was able to run without a problem on the Bulldog D that’s allowing 4.5 yards per carry overall, and this week the commitment to grinding it out will be there.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Neither team will run particularly well, but Mississippi State is doing a decent job of it lately. That’s just to kill time before Rogers can throw another  midrange completion.

The Bulldogs are better at doing what they do than Kentucky is of doing what it does. Levis is still hobbling, the O will give it away two times, and the offensive front won’t be effective enough.

Rogers will have something to do with it, too. The time of possession will matter here. UK needs to own the clock, and it won’t.

Ole Miss vs Kentucky Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

The Wildcats have their guy back.

They’ve been able to get to 4-0 with no running game, but Will Levis is playing like the big pro prospect quarterback he is, the defense has held on, and …

2.4 yards per carry for the nation’s 123rd-ranked ground game. That’s about to change with Chris Rodriguez back after missing the first month thanks to an off-the-field issue.

The 1.379-yard, nine touchdown back of last year will be fed the ball right away against an Ole Miss defense that’s been better, but got rumbled on for 262 yards in the way-too-close 35-27 battle against Tulsa.

Give Rodriguez a little time to get back to form, but if he can do anything, Levis will go off.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The Ole Miss offense can run a little, too.

USC transfer QB Jaxson Dart has been solid, but it’s the ground game that took over over the first month with an SEC-best 281 yards per game with a great rotation.

Kentucky has been solid against the run, and it should keep Dart from taking off, but it has to deal with a passing attack for the first time all season.

The Rebels will do what they do on the ground, but as long as Dart is able to hit 60% and crank it up on third downs, it’ll take UK out of its game.

There’s little pressure coming from the Wildcat pass rush, the offensive line is getting Levis lit up, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

No, really, can Kentucky handle a passing game?

Nothing against Anthony Richardson, but he’s not quite there yet with his consistency – UK came up with the big pick six needed to beat Florida.

No, really, can Ole Miss handle a ground attack?

Georgia Tech doesn’t really count, and Tulsa’s day last week was a bit alarming.

Both teams will try to control the tempo, and both teams will do what they do on offense, but …

The Ole Miss defense – improved as it might be – won’t come through late.

The UK backfield will pull this out.
