Raiders hire ex-Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello

The Raiders hired former Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello as their new QBs coach. He worked with Caleb Williams this spring.

The Las Vegas Raiders have hired Rich Scangarello as their new quarterbacks coach, according to NFL Network (via Raiders Wire).

Scangarello, 51, served as the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2019. The Broncos averaged 17.6 points per game that season (fifth-worst in the NFL), but that number was slightly higher (19.4) in the five games that then-rookie quarterback Drew Lock started to close out the season.

Denver fired Scangarello following the 2019 campaign and some Broncos fans still believe that damaged Lock’s career. Scangarello went on to have one-year stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and the University of Kentucky from 2020-2022.

After taking a break from coaching in 2023, Scangarello worked with Caleb Williams this spring as the USC quarterback began preparing for the NFL draft. The Raiders hold pick No. 13 in the draft, so if they want to land Williams, they will have to trade up.

The Broncos are set to pick one spot above Las Vegas. Denver holds six picks (including No. 12) and the team would like to acquire more through trades. The 2024 NFL draft will be held in Detroit from April 25-27.

Raiders hire former Broncos, 49ers assistant Rich Scangarello as QB coach

Former Broncos OC, 49ers QB coah=ch Rich Scangarello hired as Raiders QB coach

The Raiders continue filling out their coaching staff. New offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has named his QB coach. He is former 49ers QB coach and Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello.

It’s an interesting side note that Scangarello was recently helping to prepare top draft prospect Caleb Williams. Considering the Raiders are in the market for a quarterback and could very well look to jump up in the draft to get one. Though if they want Williams, it would likely mean they’d have to trade all the way from 13 to number one overall.

Scangarello’s first job as a QB coach in the NFL came with the 49ers in in 2017-18. Since then he’s had one-year stints as offensive coordinator with the Broncos in 2019, a senior assistant with the Eagles in 2020, back as a QB coach with the 49ers in 2021, and last season as the OC and QB coach at Kentucky.

It’s tough to really judge Scangarello by his track record. Considering his quarterbacks as either a QB coach or OC have been Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens, Jimmy G again, Joe Flacco, Drew Lock, and Brandon Allen.

QB prospect Caleb Williams working with ex-Broncos OC Rich Scangarello

Caleb Williams, one of the top QBs in this year’s class, is working with ex-Broncos OC Rich Scangarello leading up to the NFL draft.

We didn’t have this on our NFL offseason bingo card.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams, widely considered one of the best quarterbacks — and perhaps the best QB — in this year’s class, has been training with Rich Scangarello leading up to the NFL draft.

Scangarello, 51, served as the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2019. He was fired by then-head coach Vic Fangio after one season.

Some Broncos fans are convinced Drew Lock’s development would have taken a different path if Scangarello returned in 2020. After completing 64.1% of his passes and going 4-1 as a starter in 2019, Lock’s completion percentage dropped to 57.3% and he went 4-9 as a starter in 2020 with Pat Shurmur calling plays.

After being fired by the Broncos, Scangarello was a senior offensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020 before being hired by the San Francisco 49ers as a quarterbacks coach in 2021. Scangarello then served as OC and QBs coach for one season at Kentucky before being fired.

Now a coaching free agent, Scangarello is helping Williams prepare for the NFL draft. The Broncos do not pick until No. 12 so barring a trade, Williams seems unlikely to land in Denver this spring.

49ers QB coach departs for college offensive coordinator job

The #49ers just lost their QB coach.

The 49ers are losing another offensive coach. Per NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello is leaving San Francisco to take the offensive coordinator job with the University of Kentucky under head coach Mark Stoops.

Scangarello rejoined the 49ers as their QB coach this season after departing in 2019 for the Broncos offensive coordinator job. He held that same position with San Francisco in 2017 and 2018 as well. He was he Broncos OC for one year, then spent a season with the Eagles as a senior offensive assistant.

His replacement will be one of the key hires or promotions for head coach Kyle Shanahan this offseason because finding someone to work with Trey Lance and help aid his development will be crucial to ensuring the club is maximizing the No. 3 overall pick in his first full season as a starter.

Scangarello joins Mike McDaniel, Jon Embree, James Bettcher and Wes Welker as coaches who’ve left the 49ers’ staff this offseason.

Former 49ers QB coach Rich Scangarello leaving Eagles

Rich Scangarello spent two seasons as the 49ers’ quarterbacks coach. A return could be in the works if they have to add to their staff.

The 49ers for the first time since 2017 may need to make significant changes to their coaching staff. There’s one familiar name now available who could make a return to Santa Clara.

Former 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello spent last season with the Eagles as a senior offensive assistant, but won’t return to the club according to Eagles reporter Geoff Mosher and NFL insider Adam Caplan.

With 49ers running game coordinator Mike McDaniel and passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur both potential offensive coordinator candidates for newly-hired head coaches, San Francisco could be in need of some new members of their offensive staff.

Scangarello spent time with Kyle Shanahan in 2015 when he was an offensive quality control coach and Shanahan was the offensive coordinator. He reunited with Shanahan as the 49ers’ quarterbacks coach in 2017, but left the club after the 2018 season to be the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator. Scangarello held his position in Denver for only one year before making his way to Philadelphia.

When Scangarello left for Denver, Shanahan told reporters it was tough to lose his quarterbacks coach, but also noted he brought him to San Francisco because of his work with quarterbacks.

“I started with Rich in Atlanta, where he worked mainly in the run (game) and helping out our offensive line coach,” Shanahan said via the Denver Post. “But he was always a quarterback guy and that’s why I wanted to bring him to San Francisco.”

It’s worth noting the 49ers could undergo major changes in their quarterback room this offseason.

Perhaps Shanahan will look for new voices should he need to make additions to his offensive staff. If he’s aiming for someone more familiar with his offense though, Scangarello would make a lot of sense.

Press Taylor facing an uncertain future in Philadelphia as Eagles makeover the coaching staff

With the Eagles planning several big changes to the coaching staff, passing game coordinator, Press Taylor, could be fired

Press Taylor was supposed to bring a new level of innovation to the Eagles offense when Doug Pederson promoted him to the position of passing game coordinator.

The brother of Bengals head coach Zac Taylor, Press had gained accolades from around the league for his football intelligence and according to The Athletic, he was expected to play a “vital” role shaping the Eagles offense in 2020.

Taylor became quarterbacks coach in 2017 when John Defilippo moved on and Pederson had the insight to know that he needed to give his young assistant coach more responsibility or risk losing him.

Now, fast forward some 3-years later, and Pederson could give Taylor his walking papers as he reshuffles the Eagles offensive coaching staff.

Jeff McLane of The Inquirer is reporting that Taylor’s future with the Eagles is uncertain, and it comes on the heels of a report that Doug Pederson will, in fact, hire an offensive coordinator.

Pederson is moving on from Rich Scangarello and Marty Mornhinweg as he looks to regain full control of the Eagles offense.

Eagles expected to hire an offensive coordinator for Doug Pederson’s staff

Eagles expected to hire an offensive coordinator for Doug Pederson’s staff

The fallout from the Eagles 4-11-1 record continues and Jeff McLane of The Inquirer is reporting that Doug Pederson is expected to add a true offensive coordinator to the staff.

The Eagles will reportedly allow senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello to move on when his contract expires, along with that of offensive consultant, Marty Mornhinweg.

Doug Pederson addressed the notion that the Eagles had too many voices in the room this season and a unique idea of surrounding Carson Wentz with veteran coaches imploded by Week 3.

Former Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn, former Browns coach Hue Jackson, former Texans head coach Bill O’Brien and Eagles running backs coach, Duce Staley could all be names to watch.

Marty Mornhinweg won’t return to Eagles coaching staff in 2021

Marty Mornhinweg won’t return to the Eagles coaching staff in 2021

The purging of assistant coaches continues in Philadelphia and one day after it was reported that Rich Scanagrello would be moving on, Chris Mortensen is reporting that Marty Mornhinweg will also not return to the Eagles.

This is the second of several expected changes to the Eagles’ coaching staff after a disappointing 2020 season that ended with a 4-11-1 record.

This season, the Eagles offense took a step back, ranking 26th in scoring offense in the NFL and 24th in yards gained.

Mornhinweg was hired as an offensive consultant to head coach Doug Pederson last offseason.

Mornhinweg was an assistant on Andy Reid’s Eagles staff for 10 years, serving as the offensive coordinator from 2006-12.

Pederson was hoping to draw on Mornhinweg’s wealth of experience, which includes two years as head coach of the Detroit Lions and, most recently, a three-year stint as the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator (2016-18).

Report: Rich Scangarello won’t return as Eagles’ senior offensive assistant

Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan are reporting that Rich Scangarello won’t be returning to the Eagles as a senior offensive assistant

Doug Pederson hinted at reducing the number of voices inside the Eagles’ inner circle and the staff reductions have started on the offensive side of the ball.

Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan are reporting that Eagles’ senior offensive assistant, Rich Scangarello, won’t be returning to the team in that role.

Scangarello was added to the Eagles coaching staff to help improve the offense and the total opposite took place.

Scangarello came to the Eagles as a disciple of Kyle Shanahan, which was supposed to excite Eagles fans looking for further offensive innovation.

Scangarello’s specialty was excelling in the run game with pre-snap motion and misdirection that Shanahan’s 49ers team performs so well.

Eagles HC Doug Pederson calls the sharing of play-calling duties a ‘collaborative’ effort

The Eagles have some stout offensive minds on their staff with Rich Scangarello, Marty Mornhinweg, Doug Pederson, Press Taylor, and Duce Staley all bringing different strengths to the room.

And yet, Philadelphia has struggled to score points this season as well as push the ball downfield. With Carson Wentz embroiled in the worst slump of his career, Doug Pederson has hinted at giving up play-calling duties.

In a Thursday night report from The Inquirer’s Jeff McLane, Pederson has allegedly already given some play-calling duties to Scangarello and Press Taylor. McLane also reported that Taylor could have more play-calling responsibility against the Packers on Sunday.

During his Friday zoom meeting, Pederson confirmed that he’s been “sharing” play-calling duties and called the entire process a “collaborative effort.”

Pederson also stated it’s “my decision to call plays or if I’m going to give them up.”

Pederson also made it clear that even if he’s dolling out some of the duties over the course of the game, he’s still the primary play-caller.

Pederson called it a week-to-week decision and with the Eagles badly needing a win, Sunday could be the chance for a different voice.
