Arkansas vs Texas A&M Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Max Johnson was fine.

Texas A&M won’t be anything pretty this season. It’s going to grind, it’s going to rely on its defense, and it’s going to find ways to win.

Haynes King was unfairly blamed for not getting the O going in the weird loss to Appalachian State, but something had to be changed.

Johnson was hardly razor-sharp in the win over Miami, but the offense was a wee bit better on third downs, the ground game was okay, and …

Yeah, the offense has problems. Fortunately, the defense has been fantastic.

The D has been a rock against the pass over the first three games, overall it’s allowing just over 300 yards per game, and it’s got the line to hold up against the Arkansas running game that needs to dominate to win.

The Hog defense has been lit up so far through the air – everyone has thrown for 325 yards or more against the secondary – but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Arkansas Will Win

Yeah, again, the Texas A&M offense has problems.

Where are the playmakers? Devon Achane has world class wheels, but he’s stuck in mud averaging just 4.3 yards per carry. The receivers need to make big things happen more consistently, the quarterback play hasn’t been good enough, and this whole thing just doesn’t work.

In other words, A&M hasn’t shown it can take advantage of all the issues the Arkansas defense is having.

On the other side, the last thing a struggling offense needs to deal with is a pass rush – Arkansas leads the nation in sacks and is seventh in the country against the run. This isn’t the team the SEC’s last-ranked offense wants to face, and there’s another massive problem …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Texas A&M isn’t doing anything to control the clock.

This is a deliberate team that needs to make teams play its style. That’s fine as long as the results are there, but A&M is keeping the ball for just over 25 minutes per game. Even so, it should still be 3-0, it beat Miami, and …

Even when Arkansas was lousy it gave A&M a hard time in this matchup – at least it has since the 2012 blowout loss.

It might have the nation’s worst pass defense, but 2022 Arkansas isn’t lousy.

Arkansas vs Missouri State Game Preview

Why Missouri State Will Win

Well this should be fun.

Bobby Petrino’s Missouri State squad is dangerous enough to be more than just a speedbump for his old team.

QB Jason Shelley started out at Utah, went to Utah State, and now he’s ripping it up for the Bears with 562 yards, six touchdowns, and no interceptions in the first two games.

The offense is moving without a problem – the passing game is among the most efficient in the FCS – the defensive front is getting into the backfield enough to be a concern, the team has been outstanding on third downs on both sides of the ball, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Hogs have been excellent on both sides of the ball as they passed two tough early tests.

They got pushed by Cincinnati, worked well to roll past South Carolina, and as long as the lines play like they did over the first two weeks, there won’t be a problem.

Missouri State might be playing well, but the offensive line is giving up too many plays in the backfield and too many sacks, and there isn’t enough of a running game.

And as good as Petrino’s team might be, there’s no answer for …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

KJ Jefferson.

The Arkansas quarterback has been phenomenal so far against two tough defenses, completing 77% of his passes for 385 yards and four scores with 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Missouri State will throw well enough to come up with a few scores off of decent drives, but it doesn’t have the lines to keep up.

There might be a bit of a concern about the Hogs looking ahead to Texas A&M and Alabama as part of a BRUTAL run of of games, but there won’t be any real drama after the first quarter.

South Carolina vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

Don’t blow off the 35-14 win over Georgia State – that’s a good Sun Belt team with enough dangerous playmakers to have made that far tougher.

Okay, so Spencer Rattler wasn’t sensational – he didn’t push the ball down the field enough and there were too many misses – but he was okay, the offense perked up a big after a sluggish start, and the defense took care of the rest.

And yeah, okay, so the special teams were everything with blocked kicks for scores, but the pass defense got the job done and the team got the opener out of the way.

The lines are fine. There’s no need to panic, the team overall is far better than it looked and played against the Panthers, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Arkansas Will Win

Really, is South Carolina better than it looked and played against the Panthers?

The offensive line couldn’t do much to keep Georgia State out of the backfield, the running game sputtered, and the defensive line was hit for a few big dashes. Meanwhile, Arkansas got punched and it survived.

Cincinnati isn’t as good as it was last year, but it came back solid, made a push in the second half, and the Hogs still won 31-24.

The lines were great when they had to be, KJ Jefferson was KJ Jefferson and should be this week, too – he was sharp through the air and ran for 62 yards and a score – and it’ll be all about whether or not Rattler can get the Gamecock O going.

If South Carolina plays like it did last week, it will be in for a long day. But …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Cincinnati QB Ben Bryant hit the Arkansas secondary hard, and Rattler will come up with a decent performance, too.

South Carolina will get more of a ground game working, but it won’t be enough. Arkansas will be better on both lines, the pressure on Rattler will matter, and it’ll be another good, hard win for the Hogs.

Arkansas vs Cincinnati Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The Bearcats still have the lines.

You can’t hang around with the Hogs if you can’t hod up up front, and Cincinnati should be able to do that.

There might be big talent losses in several areas, but the offensive front is loaded with all-stars, veterans, and it should be among the best in the nation at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

As good as Arkansas is on the defensive front, it’s not going to live behind the line and it likely won’t generate a big pass rush.

The defensive side loses more parts, but the rotation was good enough – and the talent level raised up enough – to have another good front seven. However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Arkansas running game should be able to take over as the game goes on.

The team led the SEC in rushing, the passing efficiency should be there against a revamped Cincinnati secondary that lost a slew of NFL talents, and the O line should be able to more than hold its own – if not take over – even against this defensive front.

On the other side, can the Bearcats match the production from the lost group of skill parts? The receiving corps will be fine, and the new guys are good, but Desmond Ridder was a special quarterback who won’t quickly be replaced.

Once again, the Arkansas defense should be special on third downs, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Grinding won’t be a problem for the home side.

Cincinnati held up well last year by dominating in the red zone – the D occasionally bent, but didn’t break – it was third in the nation in takeaways, and now it goes against a team and a style that led the SEC in fewest turnovers.

This might not be anything pretty, but Arkansas will grind its way to a win. Hog QB KJ Jefferson is a massive key here. He doesn’t have to be the best player on the field, but he probably will be.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Bryce Young, Jr. Alabama

Yeah, of course the reigning Heisman winner who came really, really close to pulling out a national championship comes into the following season as the conference’s top offensive star. However, that’s not the given you might think it is considering just about ever SEC team has a quarterback talented enough to be a problem on any given Saturday.

The transfer portal brought LSU Jayden Daniels from Arizona State. Ole Miss got Jaxson Dart from USC and South Carolina got a gem in Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma. Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson have the pro scouts drooling, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is special, and Mississippi State’s Will Rogers might lead the SEC in passing.

Meanwhile, a few of those big names are in battles for the starting job, and the one guy not mentioned – Stetson Bennett – quarterbacked his team to the national title.

The SEC is loaded with passers who could start just about anywhere else outside of the conference, and Young is the best of the bunch. He might not be huge, he might not have a cannon, and he doesn’t run much, but he reads everything, is deadly accurate, and he’s about to make a big push to repeat as the Heisman winner after hitting 67% of his passes for 4,872 yards and 37 touchdowns with seven picks.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Will Anderson, Jr. Alabama

It wasn’t just that Anderson was a pass rushing terror on a defense loaded with NFL prospect, it’s that he didn’t stop until Georgia held him in relative check in the national title – and the rest of the D took advantage of the attention paid to 31 – it was the consistency and alpha defender aspect to his game. Be shocked if the production doesn’t keep on rolling.

He came up with two or more tackles for loss in 11 games, made 101 stops on the season with 17.5 sacks and 33.5 tackles for loss. No one else had more than 22 tackles for loss – he was the only player to average over two per game – and only Army’s Andre Carter averaged more sacks per game – 1.19 to 1.17.

Nick Saban might be the greatest college football coach of all-time – or close to it – but do his teams cover the spread?

How do all the SEC head coaches do against the spread, and on the road ATS, and going over on the point total?

If you like to invest, here’s everything you need to know about all 14 current SEC head coaches and how they do against the lines.

One important note, all of these stats only reflect how all the coaches have done on their current SEC teams. Two exceptions for the new guys – Billy Napier’s time at Louisiana and Brian Kelly’s era at Notre Dame are counted.

Who covers – and sometimes more importantly – who doesn’t?
