Arkansas vs Liberty Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

This continues to be the goldfish team – it gets as big as its bowl. (Okay, so that goldfish thing is actually a myth, but work with me.)

It plays Gardner-Webb, it struggles. It plays Akron, it struggles. It plays Wake Forest, it almost pulls off a thriller. It plays BYU last week, and one 41-14 win later the team is 7-1 and rolling right along.

The offense has been inconsistent – it came up with its best performance of the year last week with the ground game ripping off 300 yards – but the defense has been amazing on third downs, the pass rush is incredible, and this group has the ability to take the ball away in bunches.

It also has the ability to rise to the moment as the underdog team with nothing to lose, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Arkansas Will Win

Arkansas is a whole different rushing animal.

The defense might be in for a rough day against the Flames – it has rough days against everyone – but the consistent offense with the second-best ground game in the SEC is tearing off yards in chunks.

It has to rely on the offensive line right away against a Liberty defensive front that held up against BYU and solved the problems against the run. It started out with two rough outings against Southern Miss and UAB, got stronger, and it should be okay, but the Hogs can throw, too.

Arkansas beat BYU the week before Liberty did, with KJ Jefferson throwing at will and the running game averaging 6.6 yards per carry.

The balanced attack should be enough, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Hogs force takeaways? They’re 3-0 when forcing multiple turnovers but only came up with a total of one in the other five games.

Liberty will give it up a few times because that’s what it does. It’ll hang around and make this a tough fight – the defensive front will be okay – but Jefferson will hit his throws in the second half to ease the tension.

Arkansas vs Auburn Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

KJ Jefferson should be okay.

All systems are supposedly go after the star quarterback out in the loss to Mississippi State and getting banged up in the brilliant performance against BYU.

He had two weeks off to rest up, and now Auburn has to deal with a passing game that found its groove in Provo to go along with the ground attack that’s ninth-best in the nation.

Auburn might have finally figured out how to score a little bit with a great day from the ground game in the 48-34 loss to Ole Miss, but the run defense gave it all back and then some.

The Tigers allowed 740 rushing yards and nine touchdowns over the last two games, the run D is the worst in the SEC, and KJ and his group of rested playmakers should be able to rumble.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Auburn Will Win

Outside of KJ Jefferson being hurt, what has stopped Arkansas so far? It loses when the run defense shuts down.

The Hogs were great against Alabama for three quarters until the Tide backfield took over and finished with 317 rushing yards. Texas A&M came up with enough big runs to get close to 200, and Mississippi State even mixed it up a little bit.

Arkansas is 0-3 on the year when allowing 160 or more rushing yards and 4-0 when it give up fewer. Coming off a 179-yard day against Ole Miss, this is when Tank Bigsby needs to come up with something otherworldly.

The Hog D is the second-worst overall yardage-wise in the SEC, it’s bad on third downs, and the secondary can be thrown on to keep things moving.

Auburn has so start running, own third downs, and then come up with something big through the air to test the Hog corners deep.

However …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Auburn passing game isn’t accurate enough.

That hasn’t mattered too much against for a Hog secondary that gives up pass plays in chunks, but QB Robby Ashford is only hitting 48% of his throws and should be good for a key pick.

Auburn will build off the offensive performance against Ole Miss, but it still won’t be enough. The Arkansas balanced attack will be too relentless.

Arkansas vs BYU Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

Is KJ Jefferson back?

The star Hog quarterback was out for the Mississippi State game after suffering a head injury against Alabama, but he’s expected to give it a go.

Let’s just say the Hog offense wasn’t the same without him in the 40-17 loss to Mississippi State.

It was fine – it cranked up 483 yards – but the two turnovers and struggles to score turned what should’ve been a good fight into a blowout the other way.

Jefferson is dangerous on the move, Raheim Sanders is one of the SEC’s best backs, and it should all work against a BYU run defense that got ripped up by  Notre Dame last week after allowing over 200 yards to Utah State the week before.

The Cougar line isn’t getting into the backfield enough, it’s having problems against the run, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why BYU Will Win

Welcome to Provo, Hogs. There’s no way to describe it other than it’s a very, very unique place for big name teams to visit.

Between the setting, the energy, the altitude of 4,500 feet, and the team that comes out of the tunnel, BYU has one of the toughest home field advantages in college football.

Baylor this year, Arizona, Utah, Arizona State last year, USC in 2019 – BYU has a way of saving its biggest performances for the houseguests.

This is a tough Cougar team that likes to get the ground game going and control the tempo if it can, but this will be all about QB Jaren Hall and the passing game that fizzled hard in Vegas against the Irish.

Before that Hall was on fire hitting close to 70% of his passes with 260 yards or more in every game. Now he gets to hit up an Arkansas secondary that’s allowing over 300 yards per outing.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a rough run for Arkansas.

It went to Arlington, Texas and lost a heartbreaker to Texas A&M in the final moments, came back home and dealt with Alabama, went to Starkville and got dropped by 23 to Mississippi State, and now it has has to make the trip to Utah.

College teams are resilient and the Hogs have the lines to do more than just hold up, but BYU isn’t the place to go when you could use a little bit of a breather.

Arkansas is the better team with the better talent, but BYU’s lines, run defense, and Hall will be far sharper and more effective than they all were last week.

It’ll be close throughout, but BYU will take over the fourth quarter with third down conversion after third down conversion to grind out the final drive for the win.

Arkansas vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

The running game keeps on working.

The Hogs were a few inches away from beating Texas A&M – a late missed kick did them in – and they had Alabama in big, big trouble before the fourth quarter went the wrong way in the 49-26 loss.

The offense has been been almost perfectly balanced, the defense is among the best in the country at getting to the quarterback, and it’s all going against a Mississippi State team that hasn’t seen a great ground game and isn’t a rock in pass protection.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Bulldog formula is working.

There’s no real running game, but it comes up with yards when it tries. The passing game isn’t putting up a bazillion yards like Mike Leach offenses usually do, but it’s efficient, effective, and it’s moving the chains.

But the offense wasn’t a question mark. The other phases are working, too, with a blocked kick for a touchdown along with a pick six in the 42-24 win over Texas A&M.

The defense is good enough, and the short-range passing should be able to negate the Arkansas pass rush a wee bit. There will be moments when things bog down against this Hog D, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Mississippi State will be in for yet another interesting SEC fight. It struggled to et the passing game going in the loss to LSU, the defense had an interesting time against Texas A&M, and Arkansas will do a little of everything right with a steady, balanced attack.

However, the Hog pass defense that gave up over 300 yards in each of the first three games – all wins – won’t be able to hold up when it absolutely has to.

Both teams will trade shots, but the Bulldogs will hold on late.

Alabama vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Alabama Will Win

Did Alabama fix the glitch?

The lack of a sure-thing star at wide receiver stood out in the close call against Texas a few weeks ago, but Ja’Corey Brooks stepped up against Vanderbilt, Traeshon Holden has been okay, and Jermaine Burton is overdue to bust out.

Texas A&M couldn’t do much to get the passing game going against Arkansas – the world was all happy that Max Johnson wasn’t totally awful – but everyone else has been able to throw without a problem.

Missouri State’s Jason Shelley – a former Utah Ute – went off. South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler cranked it up, and Cincinnati’s Ben Bryant had a big day.

Arkansas won all three games, but Alabama should be able to do more on the ground to go along with Bryce Young being Bryce Young.

The Bama wide receivers don’t have to be amazing, but they should be good enough.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Arkansas Will Win

No, really, did Alabama fix the glitch?

No, not the wide receiver one – but that matters, too. Can the defensive backs handle a downfield passing game?

Bama wasn’t tested by ULM, Vanderbilt, or Utah State, but Texas was terrific with Quinn Ewers bombing away, WR Xavier Worthy went off – at least he did before Ewers got hurt – and now it’s up to KJ Jefferson to go big right away.

The Hogs made things interesting in last year’s 42-35 loss, with Jefferson going crazy on the Bama secondary in the comeback attempt.

He has enough weapons to work with to stretch the field, the SEC’s second-best ground attack will power away, and on the other side, the nation’s best pass rush should bother Young.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

No, really, did Alabama fix all the glitches?

Beating up on ULM and Vanderbilt might have made everyone feel okay after the Texas game, but now the team gets tested for real.

Is the offensive front really fixed after all of the issues last year? Probably not 100%.

Can the team really handle life on the road after the first time around didn’t go so well? Sure, it’s Alabama.

Arkansas will play well enough to make this interesting. The defensive front really will get to Young, Jefferson really will hit a few big shots, and …

Bama will come through, the offensive line will pound away with the ground game when it has to, and the team will get out with a very tough, very good win.
