Arkansas vs Texas A&M Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Max Johnson was fine.

Texas A&M won’t be anything pretty this season. It’s going to grind, it’s going to rely on its defense, and it’s going to find ways to win.

Haynes King was unfairly blamed for not getting the O going in the weird loss to Appalachian State, but something had to be changed.

Johnson was hardly razor-sharp in the win over Miami, but the offense was a wee bit better on third downs, the ground game was okay, and …

Yeah, the offense has problems. Fortunately, the defense has been fantastic.

The D has been a rock against the pass over the first three games, overall it’s allowing just over 300 yards per game, and it’s got the line to hold up against the Arkansas running game that needs to dominate to win.

The Hog defense has been lit up so far through the air – everyone has thrown for 325 yards or more against the secondary – but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Arkansas Will Win

Yeah, again, the Texas A&M offense has problems.

Where are the playmakers? Devon Achane has world class wheels, but he’s stuck in mud averaging just 4.3 yards per carry. The receivers need to make big things happen more consistently, the quarterback play hasn’t been good enough, and this whole thing just doesn’t work.

In other words, A&M hasn’t shown it can take advantage of all the issues the Arkansas defense is having.

On the other side, the last thing a struggling offense needs to deal with is a pass rush – Arkansas leads the nation in sacks and is seventh in the country against the run. This isn’t the team the SEC’s last-ranked offense wants to face, and there’s another massive problem …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Texas A&M isn’t doing anything to control the clock.

This is a deliberate team that needs to make teams play its style. That’s fine as long as the results are there, but A&M is keeping the ball for just over 25 minutes per game. Even so, it should still be 3-0, it beat Miami, and …

Even when Arkansas was lousy it gave A&M a hard time in this matchup – at least it has since the 2012 blowout loss.

It might have the nation’s worst pass defense, but 2022 Arkansas isn’t lousy.

College Wire staff predict the winner from each SEC game in Week 4

Our network staff members make their predictions for every SEC game in Week 4.

In last week’s nonconference action, the SEC finished 9-1 with the lone loss coming from the Auburn Tigers as they fell to Penn State 41-12. Week 3 featured a pair of conference classes with the Georgia Bulldogs rolling South Carolina 48-7 and the LSU Tigers‘ late surge gave them the victory over Mississippi State 31-16.

The only game featuring two teams in the top 25 came in College Station, the Texas A&M Aggies defeated the Miami Hurricanes 17-9. This week there will be two games with top 25 teams, and both will be SEC battles. The No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks meet No. 20 Texas A&M at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, for the Southwest Classic. The second game features No. 22 Florida Gators heading to Knoxville to take on the No. 12 Tennessee Vols.

Auburn will face off with Missouri at Jordan-Hare and the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide host Vanderbilt to round out the four conference games.

As we do each week, the SEC staff on the College Wire network make their predictions for each conference game on the schedule.

  • Patrick Conn, Auburn/Regional Editor
  • AJ Spurr, Alabama
  • E. Wayne, Arkansas
  • Sergio De La Espriella, Florida
  • Joe Vitale, Georgia
  • Tyler Nettuno, LSU
  • Dan Harralson, Tennessee
  • Joey Ickes, Texas A&M

A quartet of conference games highlights Week 4’s SEC action

Previewing Week 4 action around the SEC.

There will be plenty of SEC action this week as all 14 teams will be on the field spanning 10 games. There are four conference games on the docket and it begins at 11:00 a.m. CT when the Missouri Tigers face off with the Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Following that game we have the Tennessee Vols hosting the Florida Gators at 2:30 p.m. CT at Neyland Stadium.  The night caps will feature a Southwest Classic between the Arkansas Razorbacks and Texas A&M Aggies from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and Vanderbilt Commodores at Alabama Crimson Tide from Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Outside of those four games, the six nonconfernce tilts should all be in the SEC’s favor. We break down all 10 games with our Week 4 preview. All games are listed in order of kickoff.

Texas A&M vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

How is this all working? How has Arkansas gone from miserable, to okay, to 3-0 and with a realistic shot at beating a top ten-caliber team?

The defense has been terrific, the offense isn’t turning the ball over enough to matter, and the lines have been strong from the start.

It’s basic – Arkansas has been good at blocking and tackling.

The ground attack has gone off – ripping through Texas for 333 yards – with a deep group of options. With the running game along with the emergence of QB KJ Jefferson as a top playmaker, the O is doing more than enough to go along with the play of the D that’s allowing 263 yards per game.

On the other side, Texas A&M is turning it over too much, the offense is stalling, and …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The defense is just fine.

The Aggies got QB Zach Calzada enough work to be up to speed in an easy 34-0 win over New Mexico, but he doesn’t have to bomb away in this.

As always, Texas A&M likes to go at its own deliberate pace, but controlling the clock only works if the defense can take advantage of rest.

A&M gave up yards against the Kent State offense that cranks up the production on everyone, but it wasn’t a problem in the 41-10 win. Colorado managed just 260 yards, and New Mexico did nothing with just 122 yards.

In other words, it’s not time to get into too much of a twist over the lack of explosiveness on offense. However …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not just that Texas A&M is having a hard time scoring. It’s having a hard time scoring when it gets its chances.

The red zone production is awful, the passing game isn’t efficient, and whether it was Calzada or the injured Haynes King, there aren’t enough completed passes for a team that operates like it does.

But that defense …

Arkansas has lost nine straight in the series, but it always gives the Aggies a hard time. But most of the battles over the years have been shootouts – not this.

Neither team will pass well enough, and both ground games will grind and stall a bit too often. The A&M defense will play a bit better to overcome a few missed opportunities by the offense.

It’s going to be yet another battle for the Aggies, but they’ll survive and advance.

Why Arkansas Will Win

You’ll forgive Texas A&M if it’s been a wee bit distracted lately by the weather and the disaster that hit the state. Combine that with the time off since late January, and this isn’t going to be the sharpest of teams.

It hasn’t been great from the field all season long, it doesn’t get to the free throw line with any consistency, and it doesn’t get enough assists to create easy baskets. As long as the Hogs are limiting the mistakes, there shouldn’t be a problem.

Why Texas A&M Will Win

No, the Aggies haven’t played for a while, but it’s going to be incredibly fired up to get back on the floor. For a team that lives off of tough defense, that extra energy should matter.

Arkansas might be getting the job done on the road, but it’s struggling a bit with three losses in its last six games, and with close calls in the three wins.

A&M has to slow things down, force at last 15 turnovers, and capitalize on every opportunity.

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas will have to deal with a few A&M spurts, but it won’t have to worry about consistent scoring for a full 40 minutes. The Hogs will dictate the tempo and the action while being just a wee bit better from the field.
