Key things to know about Chargers’ Week 11 opponent: Bengals

Here are some important things to know about the Bengals ahead of the Week 11 matchup with the Chargers.

The Chargers are at home to face the Bengals in primetime on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 5:20 p.m. PT.

To get you prepped for the Week 11 bout, here are five key things to know about Los Angeles’ opponent ahead of the matchup.

How things are going…

The Bengals are 4-6 on the season. Cincinnati has one-point losses to the Chiefs and Ravens.

Prolific passing attack

Jesse Minter will have his work cut out against Joe Burrow and company. The Bengals rank fourth in passing offense, averaging 254.8 yards per game. Burrow leads in the NFL with 2,672 yards and 24 touchdowns. He’s only thrown four interceptions.

Brace for Chase

Burrow’s top target, Ja’Marr Chase, has been a terror to opposing defenses. Chase leads the league in receptions (66), receiving yards (981) and touchdowns (10).

Rough rushing offense

The Bengals have had success through the air, but the same can’t be said about their ground game. Cincinnati is 29th in rushing yards per game (89.7). Chase Brown is the team’s lead back. They acquired Khalil Herbert last week from the Bears after Zack Moss sustained a season-ending neck injury.

Dreadful defense

The Bengals have been able to score points, but they’ve struggled to prevent them, as they’ve allowed 26.2 PPG (26th). Cincinnati ranks 23rd and 17th in pass and rush defense, respectively. However, their issues have been in critical situations. The team ranks 31st in red zone percentage (71.88%) and 29th in third-down conversion percentage (45.80%).

Look out for…

Chase. This will be the biggest test for the Chargers’ cornerbacks this season. He’s capable of taking over a game with his big-play ability.

Bengals hosting veteran RB Leonard Fournette for a workout

The Cincinnati Bengals are hosting veteran running back Leonard Fournette for a workout, according to Tom Pelissero, as the team is still looking for more help in the backfield and could add the 29-year-old to the practice squad.

The Bengals went out at the trade deadline and added Khalil Herbert after Zack Moss was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury, but Fournette could soon be another option behind Chase Brown.

Fournette, a former No. 4 overall pick in the 2017 draft, has been in the league for seven seasons, but only played in two games last year with the Buffalo Bills, rushing for 40 yards on 12 attempts. With the Jaguars and Buccaneers for six seasons, Fournette played in 79 games and ran for 4,478 yards and 34 touchdowns while catching 312 passes for 2,219 yards and seven touchdowns through the air.

Without much depth at running back right now, the Bengals could be hoping that Fournette would provide some more at a position where they are 29th in the league in rushing yards with just 89.7 per game.

AFC North rival strengthens run game with RB trade at deadline

The Cincinnati Bengals have made a trade with the Chicago Bears to acquire RB Khalil Herbert in an attempt to solve their running game woes.

The trade deadline is finally here, and it appears the Cincinnati Bengals, AFC North rivals of Pittsburgh, couldn’t wait any longer for today’s festivities, as the team has made a trade with the Chicago Bears to acquire RB Khalil Herbert in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round draft pick, per insider Tom Pelissero.

The trade came just one day after Cincinnati’s Head Coach Zac Taylor announced that the team’s RB Zack Moss would be out indefinitely with a neck injury. This move boosts not only their run game but also the depth behind newly announced starting RB Chase Brown.

Considered by many to be dark horse candidates to challenge the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North divisional title race, the 4-5 Bengals have bolstered what was once one of their weakest areas on offense, creating a two-headed RB monster with the addition of Herbert.

Will Pittsburgh make a blockbuster trade at the deadline to keep up with the rest of the AFC, or will the team see the deadline as an opportunity to acquire solid depth?

4 RB Bengals can acquire near NFL trade deadline after Zack Moss injury

The Bengals could look to the trade deadline or free agency for help at running back.

(This story was updated to add new information.)

The Cincinnati Bengals had a need at running back before Zack Moss’ serious injury.

Moss and Chase Brown were an effective duo, yet the Bengals couldn’t reasonably go with a two-deep rotation for 17 games, if not more.

Now that Brown is the lone workhorse, the position becomes an even bigger need before the NFL trade deadline. Here are some names who might be available.

UPDATE: The Bengals traded for Khalil Herbert on Tuesday morning before the deadline.

Khalil Herbert, Bears

Herbert has fallen out of favor in Chicago, yet he is still the guy who averages 4.8 yards per carry on his career. He’s also caught 45 passes with two scores. He’s on the last year of his rookie deal, too, so the Bengals can play the short or long game with him, depending on how things go.

Travis Etienne Jr., Jaguars

The former first-round pick could be a big part of a fire sale for the Jaguars. He’s way out of favor in Jacksonville as the Tank Bigsby breakout happens. But Etienne might just need a change of scenery and averages of 4.4 yards per carry and 8.0 yards per catch could jump in a Joe Burrow offense. He’s got one more year on his rookie contract at roughly $6 million.

Chuba Hubbard, Panthers

Everyone seems to list Miles Sanders as the running back Carolina might trade. But his contract is too much for the Bengals. A guy like Chuba Hubbard, though, might make more sense. The former fourth-rounder averages better than four yards per carry and just hit up the Bengals for 104 yards and a score back in late September. He’s on an expiring contract, too.

Jeff Wilson, Dolphins

Wilson is an explosive back simply buried in a logjam with the Dolphins. But he averages 4.5 yards per carry on his career and is a proven option in the passing game. Like the others, he wouldn’t cost too much to acquire and is on an expiring contract.

Free agents

  • Jerick McKinnon
  • James Robinson
  • Matt Breida

These are simply some names to keep in mind should the Bengals choose to look on the open market. Trading for one of the above names might be a better option, but the price has to be right for both parties.

Will Zack Moss play this week? Injury updates for Bengals RB

Bengals RB Zack Moss is dealing with a neck injury. Here are the latest updates.

(This story was updated to add new information.)

Cincinnati Bengals running back Zack Moss suffered an injury late last week that calls into question his availability for Week 10 and beyond.

With the injury occurring right around the NFL trade deadline, it creates an interesting situation for a Bengals team hoping to make a playoff push.

Zack Moss injury update

  • Update: Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed on Monday that Moss will be out indefinitely with a neck injury.
  • Moss was a Friday addition to the injury report with a neck injury and missed the win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

How long will Zack Moss be out?

  • Impossible to say, but it doesn’t seem good. Moss wasn’t on the injury report at all before the neck injury during what is usually a pretty tame Friday practice. During the game against the Raiders, Chase Brown was the workhorse, carrying it 27 times for 120 yards and catching five passes for 37 yards and a score.
  • Perhaps most telling about Moss’ status? The usually conservative Bengals are reportedly buyers at the NFL trade deadline on running backs.

Bengals RB depth chart

  • Chase Brown
  • Trayveon Williams
  • Kendall Milton

And this is why the Bengals would be buyers at the deadline. Brown is looking like a fantastic player but doesn’t have the frame for a bellcow workrate all season. Williams is more of a special teams presence and Milton, a rookie, only just joined the 53.

Former Bengals RB Joe Mixon keeps putting up huge games with new team

Former Bengals RB Joe Mixon is a great fit with his new squad.

Over the offseason, the Cincinnati Bengals made the decision to move on from running back Joe Mixon, who had been with the team for six seasons.

Mixon was traded to the Houston Texans, and outside of dealing with an injury for a few weeks, he has shown that he is still a great back in his age-28 season. In three games this year, he has 52 carries for 286 yards and two touchdowns.

Two of his three games have gone over 100 yards rushing, the only one that he didn’t being the game he was injured in by a hip-drop tackle, forcing him to sit out in the Texans next three games.

The Bengals haven’t been off to a great start, and whether Mixon being in the backfield would have had any effect on that can’t be determined, but the team is currently 26th in the NFL in rushing yards per game with 100.2 in six weeks.

The combination of Zack Moss and Chase Brown has been one that is improving as the offense as a whole starts to find its groove, but Mixon still seems to be the very talented runner that he was with Cincinnati for the past six years.

Zack Moss injury update: Latest news on Cincinnati Bengals RB

An updated injury outlook for Bengals RB Zack Moss.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Zack Moss suffered what appeared to be a brutal injury during the Week 5 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Moss later returned to the game before exiting again. But the latest updates paint things in a positive light.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo wrote the following after the game: “Bengals RB Zack Moss (ankle) is believed to be OK, sources say. Got twisted in an awkward way, returned to the game and then left again but seems to be mostly a scare.”

Moss finished the day with nine carries for 24 yards and three catches for 28 yards.

The veteran running back continues to be in a committee with Chase Brown. He’s carried the ball 57 times to Brown’s 41 attempts over five games, yet gained just 211 yards (3.7 average) with two touchdowns. He’s fifth on the team in targets with 19, which has produced 124 yards and one score.

Should Moss need to miss time or have a reduced workload, Trayveon Williams would get more work behind Brown.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Zack Moss is entering his 5th year in the NFL after signing with Cincinnati in the offseason. Drafted by Buffalo in the 3rd round in 2020 and traded to Indy in November 2022, he made a name for himself when Colts RB Jonathan Taylor went down with an injury. Below, we look at Zack Moss’ 2024 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Entering 2024, he is expected to improve in his development and be the workhorse in Cincinnati’s backfield. The semi-veteran back is interesting in terms of fantasy value.

Where should you draft Moss?

Moss’ fantasy value should remain similar to years past with his new arrival to Cincinnati. While he will be the teams’ main back, he will split time with Brown which will limit his point-scoring opportunities.

Draft Moss slightly after Brown, but don’t let him fall out of the 10th round in 10-team leagues. Brown will tend to be the more explosive back, but Moss will see more snaps making him a solid fantasy late-round addition. He’s even more valuable in PPR leagues because of his ability to receive out of the back field.
