Confident Yusuf Corker making strong push for Giants roster spot

Rookie defensive back Yusuf Corker isn’t short on confidence and is making a strong push for a spot on the New York Giants’ 53-man roster.

Sometimes NFL teams stumble onto a player — or players — who go undrafted that make a niche for themselves early. Such is the case of Kentucky defensive back Yusuf Corker, who was available for the New York Giants to scoop up after this year’s draft.

The Giants likely locked onto Corker while scouting wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who they selected in the second round this spring. And they just might have gotten lucky.

The Giants needed depth at safety behind Xavier McKinney and Julian Love. The 6-foot, 197-pound Corker is making his presence known on the practice field this summer.

“I think he’s been improving each day along with the rest of those guys,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Corker at the outset of training camp. “But he definitely has some good awareness. Good skillset. He’s instinctive. He’s done a good job at improving, much like all the rookies we have. And he’ll get his opportunities.”

And he has. With fourth-round pick Dane Belton out indefinitely with a broken collarbone, Corker has been getting key reps in drills. On Sunday, he was the player wearing the headset and relaying the defensive signals for the second team.

“At first, I was a little nervous getting the calls because it was my first time ever having a radio,” Corker told reporters on Sunday. “In college we really didn’t do the radio thing, we signaled from the sidelines. I think showing that they trust me to get the calls out there and make the checks.”

During the Fan Fest scrimmage on Friday inside of MetLife Stadium, Corker recorded an interception, which did not come as a surprise for anyone.

“Before the scrimmage we all had a defensive group meeting and I basically told everybody I was going to get a turnover that game,” he said. “You know, it was a pretty bold statement, but I believed in myself. Just running to the ball, good things always come when you run to the ball, so that’s how I got it.”

That was just his latest achievement. Corker has been a standout almost everyday this summer. His goals are simple and is proving that hard work backed by some solid football sense pays off.

“I’m just a guy that comes in every day and works hard. I’m studying right now trying to learn a different position. I feel like right now I’m doing a good job of just learning my position safety, but also just trying to show my versatility at other positions. Also, just learning the whole scheme of the defense and the whole scheme of the special teams,” he said.

The way things are shaping up, Corker might be more than just a backup and special teamer for Big Blue.

2022 Giants training camp preview: Safety

The New York Giants are going to look very different (and somewhat thin) at safety in 2022.

The New York Giants are entering a new era at safety in 2022 after parting ways with last year’s two starters — Jabrill Peppers and Logan Ryan.

New defensive coordinator Wink Martindale likes to use his safeties in pressure packages and they are expected to be very aggressive in the new scheme.

The unit is coached by Jerome Henderson and Mike Treier, holdovers from Joe Judge’s staff.

Here’s a quick rundown of the key names to know at safety heading into training camp.

Is Yusuf Corker the Giants’ answer at safety?

Undrafted rookie safety Yusuf Corker stood out for the New York Giants on the first day of OTAs, and could be an important figure in 2022.

The New York Giants were shocked when Kentucky safety Yusuf Corker not only went undrafted in April, but then landed in their lap as a rookie free agent.

Desperately in need of depth at safety, the Giants were quick to swoop Corker up. In their minds, they had just found a diamond out in the open.

“I think that happens every year, where this guy should’ve got drafted in the fourth or seventh or sixth, he’s a free agent or this guy should have been a seventh, and he was a second-round pick,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Corker. “We’ll see. He’s a good kid. I think he’s got a good skillset. Put him back there, see how he does.”

Corker was widely projected to go between Round 4 and Round 6. Precious few believed he’d slide into Round 7 or out of the draft all together. But Corker’s misfortune was the Giants’ gain, and those dividends are already beginning to be paid.

After a three-day rookie minicamp last week, Corker returned for the start of organized team activities on Monday. And he immediately made an impact.

It was a surprise to some in the media to see safety Yusuf Corker go undrafted last month. Corker landed with the Giants as a free agent, and on Monday the safety made the defensive play of the day. The former Kentucky Wildcat intercepted a pass which he then took the other way for what would have been a significant gain.

Although Xavier McKinney is already penciled in as a starting safety, who plays alongside of him is less certain. Julian Love appears to have the inside track, but he’s really a versatile do-it-all man who Wink Martindale would prefer moving around.

If Corker can keep up his current momentum and play well throughout the summer, there’s a strong chance he not only makes the Giants’ 53-man roster, but plays an impactful defensive role.

Giants officially sign 13 undrafted rookie free agents

The New York Giants have officially signed 13 undrafted rookie free agents ahead of their three-day minicamp.

The New York Giants will hold their three-day rookie minicamp beginning on Friday and that meant the arrival of many players on Thursday. It also meant the time had come to officially sign some contracts.

Following the NFL’s schedule release, the Giants officially announced the signing of 13 undrafted rookie free agents — many of whom we had been made aware of previously.

The 13 signees were as follows:

  • TE Austin Allen
  • DB Yusuf Corker
  • DT Jabari Ellis
  • DB Darren Evans
  • DB Zyon Gilbert
  • FB Jeremiah Hall
  • DT Christopher Hinton
  • TE Andre Miller
  • G Josh Rivas
  • DB Trenton Thompson
  • DT Antonio Valentino
  • RB Jashaun Corbin
  • EDGE Tomon Fox

In addition to those 13 players, the Giants have invited a slew of others for tryouts. And while those names have not yet been released, it’s expected that several NFL veterans will also be trying out for a spot on the 90-man roster.

ESPN’s 7-round NFL mock draft would be a dream scenario for Broncos

This mock draft has OT Bernhard Raimann falling to the Broncos in the 2nd round, followed by ILB Chad Muma and OLB Nik Bonitto in the 3rd round.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid recently published a complete seven-round 2022 NFL mock draft (subscription required for link), including all eight picks for the Denver Broncos.

With their first pick in Reid’s mock, the Broncos select Central Michigan offensive tackle Bernhard Raimann at No. 64 overall. This would be a dream scenario for Denver because Raimann falling to the bottom of the second round would be a surprise.

The Broncos get another gem in the third round when Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma falls to them at No. 75. Denver landing Raimann and Muma without having to make any trades would be a great start to the draft.

After that, the Broncos land Oklahoma edge defender Nik Bonitto, which would represent another smart value selection at No. 96 overall.

To finish out the draft, Denver selects Fayetteville State cornerback Joshua Williams (No. 115), BYU running back Tyler Allgeier (No. 116), Tennessee defensive back Alontae Taylor (No. 145), Florida offensive tackle Jean Delance (No. 206) and Iowa safety Dane Belton (No. 232).

This would be a fantastic draft for the Broncos as it would fill the biggest needs of OT, ILB, OLB, RB and CB with excellent candidates.

The first five picks alone would make this mock an A+ class. To view the complete seven-round mock draft, visit ESPN (subscription required).

Seven round Browns mock draft from Mock Draft Database

What happens when the computer and @joshkeatley16 seemingly merge for a mock draft simulator? A very different kind of Browns mock draft:

This week the NFL Scouting Combine is in full swing and like most NFL fanatics it is always a bright spot in the off-season to get the testing results, but we have to make do with what we currently have. We have been using mock draft simulators from The Draft Network, but I wanted to mix it up this week and try out the interesting mock on NFL Mock Draft Database.

Just like in previous versions, I did an automated simulation without my opinion. In the following slides, I will provide the simulation’s selection and then my choice instead in the next slide. To be honest, I was actually shocked I agreed with so many of the selections.
