Texas WR Xavier Worthy approaching all-time great Roy Williams’ freshman records

Xavier Worthy is closing in on a record-breaking season.

Freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy has been nothing short of sensational for the Longhorns this season. The former Michigan signee arrived on campus late in the summer and has wasted no time becoming one of the best wideouts in the Big 12.

Worthy has the chance to break Texas legend Roy Williams’ freshman touchdown and receiving yards record. He only needs one touchdown and 130 yards to hold both records to himself.

Williams is the programs all-time receiving leader and was the last Texas wide receiver to be taken in the first round of the NFL draft back in 2004.

Worthy burst onto the college football scene when he hauled in three touchdowns on 100 yards receiving against Texas Tech. He followed that up with an all-time performance against Oklahoma two weeks later. It was one of his best outings to date, as he torched the Sooners defense for 261 yards and two touchdowns in the heartbreaking loss.

Here is his mid-season highlight reel courtesy of Texas football:

Look for Worthy to continue building on a fantastic freshman season and potentially ink his name in University of Texas record books.

Three things Texas needs to do to beat Kansas

Three things Texas needs to do to beat Kansas on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns (4-5) are back in Austin this week to take on the last-place Kansas Jayhawks (1-8). Texas enters the contest losing four consecutive conference games while the Jayhawks hold a six-game streak of their own.

Texas holds a commanding 16-3 all-time series lead over Kansas but the most recent games have been close contests. Over the last two matchups, the Longhorns have won both by a combined nine points. The last time Kansas played Texas it took a Cameron Dicker walk-off field goal to win a 50-48 shootout.

Despite not having a Big 12 win all season, Kansas played conference leader Oklahoma down to the wire. Without a heroic play for Sooner quarterback Caleb Williams, the Jayhawks would have had the ball with a chance to win that game.

Texas needs to win two of their last three games in order to reach the six wins mark for bowl eligibility. Without a win this weekend that will be a tall task.

Here are three things Texas needs to do to beat Kansas:

Former TCU commit DJ Allen could be a great addition to Texas’ class

Should Texas target the most recent TCU decommit?

It is no secret that the Longhorns need help, and a lot of it at the wide receiver position.

Outside of true freshman Xavier Worthy, not one Texas receiver has proven that they can be a consistent playmaker on the field at all times. While the firing of Gary Patterson at TCU may help the Horned Frogs in the long run, it is currently helping schools like Texas in the immediate future, as a few of their highly touted players have since decommitted.

This gives first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and Co. another chance to get playmakers to Austin, and build a wide receiver class that can truly be special. TCU has lost four commitments in the past two weeks, and two of them are electric receivers that can certainly make a splash at Texas. The latest is four-star DJ Allen, who announced his decommitment on Thursday.

The Gladewater, Texas native is very similar to Xavier Worthy and would be a great addition to Texas’ 2022 class. The Longhorns have yet to offer Allen, but similar to the other four-star receiver that decommitted, Matthew Golden, Texas came calling shortly after.

Texas would likely be behind the eight ball if they were to offer Allen, as he, unlike Golden, visited multiple schools before pledging to TCU. Golden had only visited TCU, which could suggest that his recruitment is starting fresh, whereas Allen may already have a contingency in place.

Either way, the Longhorns could badly use a speedy playmaker like Allen opposite of Worthy to help transcend this offense for years to come.

Halftime recap of Texas’ 7-3 lead over Iowa State

Halftime recap of Texas’ 7-3 lead over Iowa State

In a surprisingly defensive battle in Ames. Texas leads Iowa State 7-3.

Iowa State scored three points to open the game off a Bijan Robinson fumble on Texas’ first offensive drive.

Casey Thompson looked a bit off to start the game, prompting Coach Sarkisian to put Hudson Card in the game.

After a couple of sluggish drives, Card and the offense finally broke through.

Midway through the second quarter, Card led a 14 play touchdown drive capped off by a four-yard pop pass to Xavier Worthy for six. Texas picked up two key third-down conversions on the drive, one with a quick pass Joshua Moore that he took for 24 yards, and another with his legs to convert a third down and three.

Texas coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense played their best half of the season. Holding the Cyclone Offense to 181 total yards and 1-7 on third down.

Here are some of the key stats from half number one.

  • Hudson Card: 6/9 42 yards, one touchdown
  • Bijan Robinson: 11 carries, 65 yards
  • Xavier Worthy: One catch, four yards and one touchdown
  • Breece Hall: 5 carries, 25 yards
  • Brock Purdy: 16/24 140 yards

The Longhorns offense got off to a lethargic start, and was looking quite bleak against Iowa State.

Steve Sarkisian decided it was time for a switch, after Casey Thompson came out and threw nothing but errant passes, and was unable to move the offense down the field. Hudson Card, who was benched during the Arkansas game, made a few nice plays from the pocket to get Texas down the field.

It seemed like the type of move that Sarkisian was hesitant to make, but now seeing the difference between he and Thompson, it is safe to say it is the right choice for this game today. Whether Thompson was hurt or not, he just wasn’t cutting it.

With the Longhorns in the red zone, Xavier Worthy went into motion and Card flipped it to him for his eighth touchdown catch of the season, and to take a 7-3 lead over Iowa State.

The touchdown catch for  Worthy tied Roy Williams for most touchdown catches by a Texas freshman receiver in school history.

Texas WR Xavier Worthy named to Biletnikoff Award watch list

Star freshman Xavier Worthy has been recognized as one of the top receivers in college football.

Even with Texas’ season not going nearly as planned, their star freshman receiver has been making waves in Austin.

Xavier Worthy has been the best player on the offensive side of the ball outside of running back Bijan Robinson. He has been the lone bright spot in a receiver group that has been as inconsistent as they come all season.

Worthy’s stellar freshman campaign has rightfully earned him recognition as one of the top receivers in college football. On Wednesday, he was named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, which honors the season’s most outstanding FBS receiver.

Worthy has certainly earned the right to be in this discussion. He has posted 33 catches for 657 yards, seven touchdowns, while averaging an impressive 19.9 yards per catch.

He is on pace to break multiple Texas records for a freshman receiver, as he is just 242 yards away from breaking Roy Williams’ record for most receiving yards by a freshman. His seven touchdowns are also just two shy of Williams’ record for most touchdown catches by a freshman in school history.

With four games left in the regular season, and a possible bowl game on the horizon, it is seeming very likely that Worthy will be able to reach these marks, and potentially blow them out of the water.

5 takeaways from the Oklahoma Sooners 52-21 win over Texas Tech

In convincing fashion, the Oklahoma Sooners beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders 52-21 to remain undefeated. Here are 5 takeaways from the win.

As the dust settles on another Oklahoma Sooners football game, we find the Sooners still undefeated at 9-0 after a 52-21 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. It was the smoothest performance Oklahoma has had all year and it was stress-free and smooth sailing throughout.

The offense threw all over the Texas Tech secondary and the Sooners never trailed.

Caleb Williams set more records joining Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray as the only three quarterbacks to throw six touchdown passes and zero interceptions in a game.

The Sooners defense looked quite sturdy as well grabbing a few takeaways in the process. There were some interesting developments to takeaway so without further ado, let’s get started.

Xavier Worthy burns the Baylor defense for a 63-yard touchdown

With the Texas offense looking somewhat stagnate, they needed a huge play to add another score on the board in their Week 9 matchup against Baylor.

After the Bears drove down the field and notched a field goal, the Longhorns were trailing 10-7. First-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, being the offensive mastermind he is, wanted to take a shot on Texas’ next drive, and did he ever.

Quarterback Casey Thompson knew exactly where he was going with the ball, as he dropped back and launched the ball so high the cameras couldn’t pick it up to a striding Xavier Worthy.

The speedy freshman took his first and only catch of the game so far 63-yards to the house, to give Texas a 14-10 lead, and some very much needed momentum on offense after a horrible three-and-out the drive before.

The touchdown catch gives Worthy his seventh on the season, and helps him inch closer to the record for most touchdowns by a freshman Longhorn receiver.
