Jets need Year 2 leap from Will McDonald with Bryce Huff’s potential departure

If the Jets do lose edge rusher Bryce Huff to free agency, then a Year 2 leap from Will McDonald will be needed to help absorb that loss.

If free agent edge rusher Bryce Huff does sign elsewhere this offseason, the New York Jets are going to need 2023 first-round pick Will McDonald to make that Year 2 leap to help fill the void Huff may leave behind.

Behind only Quinnen Williams, Huff finished second on the team last season in pressures with 67 and was first on the team with 10 sacks, according to PFF. League-wide, Huff’s pass-rush win rate of 22.9 percent ranked third among all edge rushers in 2023, behind only Micah Parsons and Myles Garrett.

PFF is projecting that Huff’s next deal will be for three years, totaling $50 million at $16.67 million per year, with $35 million guaranteed. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that Philadelphia could “aggressively pursue” Huff in free agency.

Although I’m sure the Jets would love to have Huff back, relatively speaking, they are somewhat limited in cap space and have several bigger needs than edge rusher, such as addressing the offensive line, receiver, and safety.

If Huff is playing elsewhere in 2024, then a big jump from McDonald will be a must.

As a rookie, McDonald played only 17 percent of the Jets’ total defensive snaps. In part, this was due to the depth that the Jets had at the edge rusher position in 2023, with Huff, John Franklin-Myers, and Jermaine Johnson all ahead of McDonald on the depth chart, as was Micheal Clemons.

We also saw the Jets take a similar approach with Johnson during his rookie season in 2022. Johnson would play only 27 percent of the defensive snaps in his first season but made a big jump in 2023, playing 66 percent of the snaps while totaling 56 pressures, the third-most on the team.

In his limited action, McDonald was quite efficient in getting after the quarterback, totaling 12 pressures on just 99 pass-rush snaps, three of which turned into sacks, while also forcing a fumble. McDonald would rank 29th out of 198 eligible edge rushers in pass-rush win rate.

“Feel like he was one of, if not the most dynamic pass rushers in this Draft,” GM Joe Douglas said of McDonald during training camp. “Great combination of skill, production and athleticism. I think it was on full display at the Senior Bowl and throughout his career. Fired up to add him to a strong unit and keep adding to the line of scrimmage.”

Where McDonald is likely going to make the biggest impact – at least early on in his career – is as a pass rusher. Listed at only 241 pounds, Lance Zierlein of NFL.com wrote in his pre-draft scouting report about McDonald that against bigger competition, he was able to hold his own in college.

However, at the NFL level, McDonald will have to consistently show he can hold up against the run and set a strong edge.

With the aforementioned Johnson, Williams, and Franklin-Myers all returning this season, it’s not as if the Jets’ ability to get after the quarterback will be greatly diminished if Huff doesn’t return. As a defensive unit, the Jets generated pressure at the fourth-highest rate in 2023, according to Pro Football Reference.

But with that said, Huff’s 67 pressures will be a lot of production for the Jets to replace. That, of course, won’t all fall on McDonald’s shoulders by any means either–although a jump similar to the one Johnson made will be important.

“He’s got all the freakish ability,” Robert Saleh said of McDonald. “He can win with speed and can counter inside, but until you get those tackles playing a little bit more heavy-footed because they’re afraid of your power and all that stuff won’t matter, so he’s learning that aspect of it, but I’m excited.”

Watch: Quinnen Williams does Jaylen Waddle celebration following sack

Quinnen Williams did the waddle after his sack.

Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is always fun to watch and he provided another highlight during Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins. Two, in fact.

First, he broke through the line to get a sack of Tua Tagovailoa during the second quarter. Then after he got the sack, Williams celebrated by doing a waddle. Specifically, the waddle celebration of Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.

Officially, it was a half-sack credited to Williams and Will McDonald. But anytime Williams gets in the backfield, it usually spells bad news for the opposing offense.

Jets Week 15 injury report: Jason Brownlee out, Carter Warren doubtful

WR Jason Brownlee is out and offensive tackle Carter Warren is doubtful for Week 15 against the Dolphins.

The Jets released their injury report and game statuses Friday for their Week 15 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Two players — QB Aaron Rodgers and WR Jason Brownlee — are listed as out. With Rodgers practicing, he has been listed on the injury report but has yet to be activated from injured reserve. The Jets have until Wednesday to do so.

Rodgers was listed as a limited participant Thursday and Friday and was even starting to push his practice habits a little. Brownlee did not practice all week with an ankle injury.

Offensive tackle Carter Warren is doubtful for Sunday with a hip injury. After missing Week 14 against the Houston Texans, Warren did not practice all week, likely causing him to miss another game. Max Mitchell would get another start at right tackle if Warren cannot go…if Mitchell plays himself. Mitchell is questionable with a neck injury. He was limited all week.

Also listed as questionable for the Jets: DE John Franklin-Myers (ankle), FB Nick Bawden (knee), C Joe Tippmann (shoulder) and DE Will McDonald (knee). Franklin-Myers, Bawden and Tippmann all practiced in full Friday while McDonald was a late add Friday with a knee injury and did not practice.

Quarterback Zach Wilson was on the report with a knee injury but practiced in full all week. He is good to go for Sunday.

For the Dolphins, safety DeShon Elliott (concussion) and guard Robert Hunt (hamstring) are both out. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill highlights the questionable Dolphins as he did not practice all week with an ankle injury.

Also listed as questionable for the Dolphins: RB De’Von Achane (toe), OT Terron Armstead (knee/ankle), OL Liam Eichenberg (calf), FS Jevon Holland (knees), CB Xavien Howard (hip), OT Austin Jackson (oblique) and OLB Andrew Van Ginkel (oblique). All were listed as limited participants Friday.

Will McDonald isn’t letting lack of snaps as a rookie frustrate him

Will McDonald IV isn’t trying to let his lack of snaps as a rookie with the Jets frustrate him.

Will McDonald IV hasn’t seen the field much in his rookie season with the New York Jets. Even though a lack of snaps could frustrate a first-year player, McDonald is doing his best to not let it affect him.

“I don’t really want to rush things, but I know that I can make a lot of impact,” McDonald said, via ESPN. “We’ve got a lot of dudes in the room that can impact the game, so it’s really just like whenever each of us get our opportunities, we just have to ball out.”

The Jets used the 15th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft on McDonald out of Iowa State. The former Cyclone tallied 27 total sacks in his final three collegiate seasons, and he was expected to join a Jets pass-rushing unit that just added Jermaine Johnson in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Similar to Johnson, McDonald has seen a severely limited role in his rookie campaign. But unlike Johnson, McDonald is on pace to become the first first-round rookie for the Jets since Vernon Gholston in 2008 to play fewer than 200 snaps.

The only first-round rookie with fewer snaps than McDonald this season is Nolan Smith on the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s tough for Smith to see playing time as the Eagles boast an edge-rusher group of Haason Reddick, Brandon Graham, and Josh Sweat.

We’ve seen McDonald get a little more playing time in recent weeks as he logged 14 defensive snaps in Week 12 versus the Miami Dolphins. At the same time, Micheal Clemons was ejected from the game and the Jets were being blown out, which led to McDonald seeing more action.

While McDonald has half a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in nine appearances this season, the young edge rusher is just trying to make the most of his limited opportunities right now.

Jets Week 10 inactives: Will McDonald out, makes room for Carl Lawson

Jets Week 10 inactives: Will McDonald out, makes room for Carl Lawson

The inactives are out for the New York Jets in Week 10 against the Las Vegas Raiders. It was already known that Billy Turner would be due to his injured finger. Duane Brown was ruled out as well, but he hasn’t been activated from injured reserve yet.

The player that was the biggest question mark this week was defensive end Will McDonald. The first-round pick suffered an ankle injury this week and missed practice Friday. He was listed as questionable and was officially deemed inactive for Sunday. As a result, Carl Lawson is back in the rotation.

Here are your inactives for the Jets for Week 10.

3 best Jets rookies from first half of season

Who are your picks for the best rookies so far this season?

The Jets have been praised for their big hits in the 2022 NFL Draft. They drafted the Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year in WR Garrett Wilson and CB Sauce Gardner. They also traded back into the first round to select Jermaine Johnson, who has been incredible in 2023, along with RB Breece Hall in the second round and DL Micheal Carter in the fourth.

But what about 2023? How have some of their rookies fared this season? Are there any standouts this time around? Here, we’ll take a look at some of the top rookies for the Jets in the first half of the 2023 NFL season.

Jets injury report: Duane Brown, Chazz Surratt, Billy Turner out for Week 10

Jets injury report: Duane Brown, Chazz Surratt, Billy Turner out for Week 10

The Jets will be without two offensive tackles for Sunday night against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Jets are not activating Duane Brown just yet while Billy Turner is out after getting surgery on his injured finger.

The result is a sixth different starting offensive line combination for the Jets in their ninth game this season. Most likely, the Jets will move Max Mitchell back to right tackle after he started at right guard last week against the Chargers while a new face will start at right guard. Rodger Saffold could get the start. The Jets will likely elevate the veteran from the practice squad.

Linebacker Chazz Surratt is also out as he will miss his second game with an injured ankle.

First-round pick Will McDonald suffered an ankle injury and was a late addition to the injury report, missing Friday’s practice, putting his status for Sunday up in the air. He is officially listed as questionable.

Mekhi Becton (knee), Allen Lazard (knee), Jeremy Ruckert (shoulder) and Quincy Williams (knee) were all full participants in practice Friday and are good to go for Sunday.

Jets announce Week 2 inactives: Will McDonald a healthy scratch

Will McDonald a healthy scratch for Week 2

The inactives are out for the New York Jets and their first-round pick is not dressing. The Jets are making Will McDonald a healthy scratch for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. McDonald played 13 snaps in Week 1 against the Bills. He was essentially pushed out, at least for now, by the returning Carl Lawson. He was simply a victim of the numbers the game on the defensive line.

Cornerback Bryce Hall is also inactive as Brandin Echols returns from his suspension. Hall was mostly a weekly inactive last season.

It was already known that Greg Zuerlein would be out with a groin injury. Austin Seibert will kick in his place this week.

The remaining inactives were also inactive in Week 1: RB Izzy Abanikanda, WR Jason Brownlee, LB Zaire Barnes and OT Max Mitchell.

Jets EDGE Will McDonald IV impresses through 2 preseason games

Jets EDGE Will McDonald IV impresses through 2 preseason games

It’s only one week into the NFL preseason but the 2023 NFL draft class of edge rushers is already making an impact on the league. One player who really impressed us is New York Jets edge rusher Will McDonald IV.

In two games, McDonald has played 25 pass-rushing snaps. In those snaps, he has six pressures, three quarterback hits and one sack. This works out to a 24 percent pressure rate.

McDonald got his first sack in the Jets second preseason game where he dominated against the Carolina Panthers starting offensive line. In that game, McDonald played 11 pass-rushing snaps and got four of those quarterback pressures, two quarterback hits and that sack.

Many fans scratched their heads when New York spent the No. 14 overall pick but the Jets front office knew exactly what they were doing. McDonald was somewhat miscast at Iowa State and wasn’t given the same kind of pass-rushing opportunities he will get in the NFL. Don’t be shocked if McDonald is in the mix to be named Defensive Rookie of the Year.
