Jets make a few roster moves ahead of Week 18

The Jets do some roster gymnastics before their final game of the 2023 season.

The Jets made a few rosters moves ahead of their Week 18 game against the New England Patriots.

The team placed three players — quarterback Zach Wilson, tight end Jeremy Ruckert and offensive lineman Jake Hanson — on injured reserve. With only one game left and the team not going to the playoffs, the Jets are able to free up room on the active roster to bring up players and get a head start on the reserve/future deals. At this point, it’s just a matter of time before the next move involving Wilson is him moving to another team.

The Jets signed running back Xazavian Valladay, linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Bal, offensive lineman Chris Glaser and defensive lineman Bruce Hector from the practice squad to the active roster.

As referenced earlier, the Jets get ahead of the game by adding these players to the active roster and being able to keep them going into the offseason, getting a jump on the reserve/future deals by not having to worry about those contracts with these players since they will at least now have contracts that run through March. Players on the practice squad immediately become free after the season as practice squads for the season cease to exist when the season is over.

The Jets also elevated two players from the practice squad and, unsurprisingly, one of those players was fullback Nick Bawden. Head coach Robert Saleh mentioned when the team activated Aaron Rodgers that they had roster flexibility. That worked out with Bawden. There were three games left at the time and a player can be elevated three times from the practice squad. That’s exactly what happened with Bawden. He also didn’t lose any money because his contract became guaranteed in Week 1 as a vested veteran.

The other player elevated was kicker Austin Siebert. This one is interesting because Greg Zuerlein wasn’t on the injury report so it will be interesting to see how the Jets play the kicking game with two kickers now on the 55-man roster.

Robert Saleh provides updates on Zach Wilson, Jeremy Ruckert

Robert Saleh provided updates Monday on Zach Wilson and Jeremy Ruckert

Jets head coach Robert Saleh met with the media Monday, the day after his team’s 30-28 win over the Washington Commanders.

During the session, Saleh provided injury updates on quarterback Zach Wilson and tight end Jeremy Ruckert. Here’s what Saleh had to say about two of his offensive players ahead of Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Jets Week 14 snap counts: Playing time breakdown from win vs. Texans

A look at how the snaps were distributed from the Jets’ Week 14 win against the Houston Texans.

The Jets needed a win not only to keep their season alive but also to build back morale after what had to be a very stressful week at the office. New York snapped a five-game losing streak firmly with a 30-6 win over the Houston Texans.

Because the Jets were up comfortably, they were able to empty the bench and get other players some snaps late in the game, a luxury the Jets haven’t been afforded much lately. We’ll take a look at how the snaps were distributed on offense and defense from Week 14.

Players and personnel decisions Jets should make in season’s final quarter

A look at four players that should either see more playing time or at least a small piece of evaluation in the final five games of the season.

The Jets have five games left in the season and at 4-8, their hopes for the playoffs are all but gone. The team doesn’t even know who their starting quarterback will be for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. At this point, the Jets want to try and finish strong for team morale reasons, but it may also be time to start looking ahead to 2024 and what the roster could look like.

Because of that, the Jets have some players who deserve to see more playing time, even if it’s just for 2024 evaluation purposes. We’ll take a look at some of those players and personnel options the Jets should consider looking at in the homestretch of the season.

Jets snap count: Depth chart breakdown vs. Raiders

Jets snap count: Depth chart breakdown vs. Raiders

The Jets suffered another disappointing primetime loss, this time to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday Night Football in Week 10.

The Jets fell to 4-5 with the loss but still only sit one game out of a playoff spot in what has become a tight AFC playoff race.

Here, we’ll take a look at the snap counts for the Jets in Week 10 and get another sense of how the Jets are utilizing some of their players on each side of the football.

Jets injury report: Duane Brown, Chazz Surratt, Billy Turner out for Week 10

Jets injury report: Duane Brown, Chazz Surratt, Billy Turner out for Week 10

The Jets will be without two offensive tackles for Sunday night against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Jets are not activating Duane Brown just yet while Billy Turner is out after getting surgery on his injured finger.

The result is a sixth different starting offensive line combination for the Jets in their ninth game this season. Most likely, the Jets will move Max Mitchell back to right tackle after he started at right guard last week against the Chargers while a new face will start at right guard. Rodger Saffold could get the start. The Jets will likely elevate the veteran from the practice squad.

Linebacker Chazz Surratt is also out as he will miss his second game with an injured ankle.

First-round pick Will McDonald suffered an ankle injury and was a late addition to the injury report, missing Friday’s practice, putting his status for Sunday up in the air. He is officially listed as questionable.

Mekhi Becton (knee), Allen Lazard (knee), Jeremy Ruckert (shoulder) and Quincy Williams (knee) were all full participants in practice Friday and are good to go for Sunday.

Tight ends ‘feasted’ in practice Sunday, C.J. Uzomah believes group can exploit defenses

The tight end group could sneak up on overlookers this season.

All the focus this offseason for the Jets has been on the quarterback and some of the new weapons on the outside. But Sunday was a reminder that the tight end group is one not to be overlooked.

By many accounts, the tight ends as a whole had a great day Sunday. They “feasted” as C.J. Uzomah put it.

The top three tight ends for the Jets — Tyler Conklin, Uzomah and Jeremy Ruckert — all look like they’re going to have a role on offense this season.

“All three of us can do anything,” Uzomah said Sunday. “Ware all sneaky fast. The playbook is wide open for all of us and we can really exploit defenses.”

Uzomah also believes all three tight ends are on the same page. If they can get all three involved, especially second-year tight end Ruckert, that only raises the ceiling of what this offense can do.

Conklin was second on the team in catches (58), yards (552) and touchdowns (3) last season. Uzomah added a pair of touchdowns. The Jets are high on Ruckert as well, who has been having a strong offseason and worked hard to come back from his injuries last season.

Defenses are going to be stressed trying to cover the wide group of targets the Jets will have this season. We know about the group outside. Don’t forget about the group inside.

Ohio State DE Zach Harrison will play in Senior Bowl to cap his collegiate career

The senior will get another chance to be on a big stage

The Senior Bowl is the most prestigious post-collegiate bowl and can really help a prospects [autotag]NFL Draft[/autotag] status. We have seen plenty of [autotag]Senior Bowl[/autotag] participants rise up on teams draft boards, especially due to the fact that NFL teams will have full access to those players for a week of practices, interviews and of course, the game.

Ohio State has sent some of their best seniors to the game (last year [autotag]Jeremy Ruckert[/autotag], [autotag]Haskell Garrett[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyreke Smith[/autotag]) and this year defensive end [autotag]Zach Harrison[/autotag] will represent the Buckeyes in Mobile, Alabama. It should be a very prosperous week for the senior, as Harrison should test very well and has an impressive physique.

Even though Harrison knows where he will play his final snaps in college, he would still like to play in at least two more games before heading off to Alabama.

Jets activate RB Tevin Coleman, TE Jeremy Ruckert

The Jets announced a pair of players returning to the active roster.

The New York Jets announced a pair of roster moves, adding two players to the active roster.

The Jets have activated RB Tevin Coleman (illness) and rookie TE Jeremy Ruckert (foot) from the active/Non-Football Injury list.

Coleman was New York’s second-leading rusher in 2021 with 356 rushing yards (Michael Carter led with 639) and also added 11 catches for 49 yards in 11 games in his first season with the Jets after spending time with the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers. Coleman re-signed with the Jets as a free agent in March.

Ruckert caught 26 passes for 309 yards last season with Ohio State and was taken with the No. 101 pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, which excited his whole family, including his father, who were all Jets fans from Lindenhurst, NY.
