Ohio State basketball hosts West Virginia forward in transfer portal

West Virginia transfer, Jalen Bridges took a visit to Columbus on Wednesday. #GoBucks

Ohio State basketball will need to replace seven members of its roster for the upcoming season. The Buckeyes have the No. 5 ranked class in the nation and the best class in the Big Ten according to 247Sports. With only five freshmen signed in the class, it leaves room to explore the transfer portal for potential proven help.

One such player may be West Virginia sophomore, Jalen Bridges. Bridges is a former four-star prospect and was ranked in the top 100 in the class of 2020. The West Virginia native chose his home state Mountaineers where he has played the past two seasons, starting 52 of 61 career games.

In year two with Bob Huggins, Bridges averaged 8.4 points per game and 4.8 rebounds. He’s also an excellent shooter from the free-throw line at over 80 percent.

While a commitment hasn’t been made, Bridges looks like he had an excellent visit with the OSU coaching staff on Wednesday. The Buckeyes are firmly in the mix and would be a solid addition for Chris Holtmann.

Bridges reportedly has a top four of Ohio State, Michigan State, Alabama, and Baylor.

Oklahoma pulls away late for a 72-59 win over West Virginia

The Oklahoma Sooners shot 53% from the field and 40% from three to improve to 16-14 with a 72-69 win over West Virginia.

The final score may not accurately reflect how the game went, but the Oklahoma Sooners came away with a 72-59 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Tanner Groves led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Jordan Goldwire chipped in 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists for the Sooners, who improved to 16-14.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 10-6 lead but went cold for much of the first as the Sooners took control and built a  14-point lead off of some timely defense and efficient shooting. West Virginia rallied to close the half trailing by four points.

The second half remained closely contested between the two sides. Every time Oklahoma would make a run, West Virginia would answer to narrow the gap. However, in the final six minutes, Oklahoma pulled away for good, closing out their last home game of the season with an 18-9 run.

The Sooners shot 53% from the field and 40% from three in a game they needed to win to keep their NCAA tournament hopes alive. They’re still a long shot for the tourney, but a win at Kansas State and a good showing in the Big 12 tournament can help them make one final push for March Madness consideration.

Texas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

Texas has to make its shots. It’s just that simple.

Yes, put the ball through the round hole more than the other team does is a positive in this game, but Texas struggles to overcome days when it’s not shooting well.

No, it didn’t do anything from three in the win over TCU, but it was great inside and fantastic on the offensive glass.

When it got shut down by Texas Tech and shot 28% overall, that was it – it couldn’t win.

Texas is 12-1 when it makes 44% of its shots or more.

West Virginia is 2-13 when it allows teams to hit 41% from the field.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers have to be ultra-aggressive defensively from the outside – like they always are – and they have to do what they do to come up with lots of steals, lots of blocks, and lots of defensive stops.

The offense might not be anything special, but it’s great at attacking the rim and getting to the line.

Again, Texas needs to make its shots to win and can’t get this done if it goes cold and this turns into a free throw shooting contest. But …

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia has lost its last five games and 12 of the last 13 because the defense has been hit or miss – and it’s missed a whole lot over the last few games.

Yeah, Texas has lost two of its last four games, but West Virginia isn’t Baylor or Texas Tech.

The Longhorns won’t wilt on the road under West Virginia’s defensive pressure.

Kansas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

We’ve done this before and it didn’t go all that well.

Kansas hosted a good West Virginia team that was 14-2 and looking to make a statement. The Jayhawks rudely rolled 85-59, and the Mountaineers have been on a 1-9 bender ever since.

The Mountaineers just don’t rebound well enough.

They can get on the move, and they’ll block shots, and they’ll come up with a slew of decent defensive plays, but they don’t do enough on the glass at either end of the floor – they were -9 in rebounding margin in the first meeting.

Now they have to deal with a team that’s got the most offensive pop in the Big 12 and should win the rebounding battle by at least five.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia is hardly a rock at home, but it’s a whole lot better than it is on the road.

It’s 11-3 in Morgantown and 3-8 away – it brings a whole other level of defensive intensity in its own house.

Steals mean everything to the way this group rolls. It’s 6-1 when it comes up with 11 or more steals, and Kansas has had its share of moments giving up a whole lot of turnovers.

This is all about bringing the defensive pressure from the start and forcing Kansas isn’t a tough shooting day. But …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia just isn’t making enough shots.

It doesn’t have the inside presence to hold up with Kansas goes into the half court sets, and it doesn’t have the ability from three to bomb its way out of jams.

Kansas won’t have this easy, but it’ll come up with enough rebounds to overcome the inconsistencies.

Texas Tech vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

West Virginia isn’t the West Virginia we’re used to.

It’ll have its moments defensively, but it doesn’t have the same suffocating D, the rebounds aren’t there, and there’s nothing much happening from three because the team doesn’t generate the extra pass.

That’s all death against one of the best defenses in college basketball.

Texas Tech isn’t going to allow a thing from the outside, and it forces way too many turnovers and mistakes for West Virginia to deal with, and again with the rebounds.

The Red Raiders should be able clean everything up.

As long as they’re not letting the Mountaineers get to the rim, they’ll be fine. But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia will come up with its share of turnovers.

No, it might not do enough to stop teams from scoring on the inside, but it’ll come up with enough steals to matter and it should be able to feed off the energy of the crowd and the big game.

This is the time to possibly turn the season back around. Texas Tech is coming off of an emotional home win over Texas, but before that it wasn’t all that great from three for long stretches and it’s not going to bomb its way to a win.

If the Mountaineers can grind down Texas Tech a bit and keep this in the 60s, they’ll have a shot.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech was able to win 78-65 a few weeks ago in Lubbock even though it couldn’t hit enough from three, hit got hit with a ton of fouls, and it wasn’t all that great on the line. What did it do well?

Rebound. It was +10 on the board, made up for the problems with a whopping 15 offensive boards – a season-high after the first three warm-up games of the year – and it should be able to get by again by winning on the glass.

West Virginia will have a run or two, but slow and steady should win this race in the second half.

West Virginia vs Baylor Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers have got to keep this slow, low scoring, and force Baylor into enough mistakes to matter.

That didn’t happen the first time in a 77-68 Bear win, but that was partly because the three point defense didn’t show up. Baylor hit 12 from three, didn’t have enough turnovers to make a huge difference, and it was better on the boards.

The Mountaineers will block plenty of shots and make things tough on the inside, and they’ll get plenty of points on the free throw line. They need to make this a free throw contest and force the Bears into at least 15 turnovers.

If Baylor gets called for 19 fouls like it did in the loss to Alabama, West Virginia has a shot.

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Baylor Will Win

You don’t think that loss to Alabama will get the team fired up?

Baylor needs to run, keep moving, get transition points, and not worry about whether or not West Virginia can keep up.

The Mountaineers might be able to play nasty D at times, but they’re not great on the defensive glass and just don’t move the ball around well enough.

More than anything, the team just doesn’t score.

It’s struggling to get close to 70 points – it’s not doing it – over the recent losing run, and it has only been able push to 70 or more eight times. It’s gone 7-1 when it does, and it’s 6-6 when it doesn’t.

Baylor’s defense allowed 70 or more just four times with the 87 given up to Alabama an aberration. So …

What’s Going To Happen

Expect a relatively low scoring game – especially on the West Virginia side.

Baylor will clamp down hard after having such a difficult time doing it in Tuscaloosa, West Virginia won’t be sharp enough late in the first half, and it’ll be a sixth straight loss and the fifth straight road defeat.

Oklahoma women’s basketball downs West Virginia, 88-76, improves to 16-2

Madi Williams scored 23 points, Taylor Robertson added 22 points and No. 14/19 Oklahoma topped West Virginia, 88-76, to improve to 16-2.

The Oklahoma women’s basketball team kept rolling, rallying from a halftime deficit to top West Virginia, 88-76, to improve to 16-2 overall (5-1 Big 12).

Senior Madi Williams finished with a team-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting and senior Taylor Robertson knocked down 5-of-10 from three-point distance to deliver 22 points.

Trailing 46-44 at halftime, OU outscored West Virginia 28-12 in the third quarter to take control. After WVU’s Esmery Martinez made a jumper to pull the Mountaineers within one point at 58-57, the Sooners closed the third on a 14-1 run to open the game up.

“What a tough game. I mean, I think obviously West Virginia is a very good basketball team. They’re very physical. I thought they pounded it inside on us. I thought they exposed us in a lot of areas and I’m really proud of our team. I thought our first quarter was pretty good and I thought that the way we came out of halftime. There were some great performances on both sides today which I think is a great game for women’s basketball,” Oklahoma head women’s basketball coach Jennie Baranczyk said.

What exactly did spearhead that big third-quarter run for the Sooners?

“I think when we move and we play really good defense, we do a pretty nice job. I mean, we’re limited right now in terms of our inside play. We were down a point guard today, so I think we took care of the ball. I think sometimes it helps you on both ends. I’d have to go back and look, but I just think our overall energy and I thought the tempo of our game was a huge key in that third quarter,” Baranczyk said.

“I think we want to get up tempo. I mean, that’s a huge part of what we do period. Now, what I would’ve liked to have seen is not just fast break in the full court. I think in terms of up tempo, I love that in the full court. I also love it a little bit more in the half court. I think we got on our heels a little bit. Credit to West Virginia for that, especially in those second and third quarters, but, offensively, yeah, we want to be able to get out. It’s fun and I think we have a lot of people that can bring the ball up the floor. We have a lot of people that can do a lot of things. We want to be able to make reads and get up and down.”

It’s the best start for Oklahoma since the 2006-07 season. OU travels to Kansas State next where it will play the Wildcats at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
