Kansas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas had an … easy win?

Not even the FCS cupcake games are sure-thing layups for the Jayhawks over the years, but the program has players now, it has a head coach in Lance Leipold armed with a contract boost, and this whole thing might start to turn fast.

It’s still going to be a struggle in the Big 12, but the offense was balanced in the 56-10 win over Tennessee Tech, QB Jalon Daniels continues to prove he’s going to be a problem for the rest of the conference, and the running game that ran for six touchdowns and close to ten yards per carry should be able to …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why West Virginia Will Win

It’s not going to be easy for Kansas to run.

West Virginia lost in a good 38-31 battle with Pitt, but it got a huge day out of a defensive front that lived behind the line and didn’t give up a thing on the ground.

So what went wrong? Too many penalty, two turnovers, and a hot Kedon Slovis in the clutch ended up being the difference, but the offense was balanced, JT Daniels was fine – even if there weren’t enough downfield plays – and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Welcome to CJ Donaldson.

The big freshman tight end/running back/receiver/Cordarrelle Patterson made things happen whenever he had the ball in his hands, Daniels is going to get more time to work than he had against the Panthers, and the defense will take care of the rest.

This isn’t going to be your normal Kansas pushover – again, it has playmakers now – but the West Virginia lines will own this.

Kansas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

We’ve done this before and it didn’t go all that well.

Kansas hosted a good West Virginia team that was 14-2 and looking to make a statement. The Jayhawks rudely rolled 85-59, and the Mountaineers have been on a 1-9 bender ever since.

The Mountaineers just don’t rebound well enough.

They can get on the move, and they’ll block shots, and they’ll come up with a slew of decent defensive plays, but they don’t do enough on the glass at either end of the floor – they were -9 in rebounding margin in the first meeting.

Now they have to deal with a team that’s got the most offensive pop in the Big 12 and should win the rebounding battle by at least five.

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia is hardly a rock at home, but it’s a whole lot better than it is on the road.

It’s 11-3 in Morgantown and 3-8 away – it brings a whole other level of defensive intensity in its own house.

Steals mean everything to the way this group rolls. It’s 6-1 when it comes up with 11 or more steals, and Kansas has had its share of moments giving up a whole lot of turnovers.

This is all about bringing the defensive pressure from the start and forcing Kansas isn’t a tough shooting day. But …

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia just isn’t making enough shots.

It doesn’t have the inside presence to hold up with Kansas goes into the half court sets, and it doesn’t have the ability from three to bomb its way out of jams.

Kansas won’t have this easy, but it’ll come up with enough rebounds to overcome the inconsistencies.

Kansas (12-6) vs West Virginia (12-5) Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

There weren’t any issues the first time around.

The Jayhawks ripped through West Virginia back in late December 79-65 by making a season-high – by a mile – 16 of 37 shots from three as they kept bombing and West Virginia couldn’t do much to stop it.

The offense continues to move the ball around well, and this is the best rebounding team in the Big 12, even though the wheels have come off over the last six games. However …

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Kansas defense has taken a bit of a break on the road.

The D was fine in home wins over struggling TCU and Kansas State teams, but before that were three straight road games followed up by a trip to Tennessee, and the D was torn to shreds in those four losses.

West Virginia is solid from three, it seemingly grabs every offensive rebound, and it has the chops to more than hold its own against a team that lives off of dominating the rebound margin.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is struggling way too much on the road lately.

West Virginia might not be consistent, but it’s been able to score well enough and has been strong enough from three keep giving the Jayhawk D problems.

The Kansas outside shooting has gone cold, West Virginia will take advantage on the boards, and an entertaining game will go to the home side as it hits everything on the line late.

Kansas (0-3) vs West Virginia (2-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

So what is Kansas doing right?

It’s been a rough run all the way around over the first three games, but there is a running game there that has to keep being fed. It’s not hitting four yards per carry, but there’s talent in the backfield with Velton Gardner and Pooka Williams who need the ball in their hands.

Run, keep running, and try to control the clock. Kansas isn’t getting hammered in the time of possession battle and it’s not turning the ball over enough to matter, but …

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Kansas lines have been awful.

The offensive front isn’t consistently doing enough for the excellent backs, it’s not doing much of anything in pass protection, and the defensive front isn’t getting into the backfield. The Jayhawks have generated just three sacks and 15 tackles for loss so far – they’re just not generating enough big plays.

KU is dead-last among all Big 12 teams in total offense, West Virginia leads the conference in total defense. The pass rush is solid, the secondary has been great, and there won’t be the passing game from the Jayhawks to be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas hasn’t had any fun, with the biggest problem the health of head coach Les Miles after he tested positive for COVID-19. He’s doing okay, but he obviously has had more important things to deal with.

On the field, Kansas doesn’t have enough pop to the offense to push through a Mountaineer defense that’s 2-0 when allowing 75 rushing yards or fewer and gave up 203 yards in the loss to Oklahoma State.

Kansas isn’t getting to 200 yards and it’s not going to be able to control the game like it’ll need to.

Kansas (20-3) vs. West Virginia (18-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

How did Kansas beat the Mountaineers the first time around? The defense dominated from the perimeter.

The Jayhawks couldn’t make a thing from three, either, but they were better from the field, they got on a big second half run, and they were able to keep down a middling O.

West Virginia turns the ball over way too much, KU blocks everything on the inside, and it’s good enough on the boards to not get hammered by the always-active team that makes up for its mistakes with hustle plays and …

Why West Virginia Will Win

Offensive rebounds.

That’s it. That’s the game. WVU leads the nation with over 15 offensive boards per game. Kansas might be second-best in the Big 12 on the glass – behind the Mountaineers – but it lost the battle on the boards by 14 in Lawrence.

This is a whole difference WVU team at home. All five of its losses are on the road, going 15-0 so far. Everyone has a home court advantage, but for an energy team like this, it’s a whole different animal when the big boys have to come to Morgantown.

What’s Going To Happen

The rebounds will be all the difference.

This is a hot Kansas team that’s doing a great job of battling in relatively low-scoring games – the defense is getting it done over the offense – but this is when the offensive talent needs to shine through.

Instead, the Mountaineers will force the big mistakes, they’ll stop everything from three, and they’ll dominate the rebounding margin to do just enough to pull off the giant win.
