Texas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers have the offensive balance, and they have the run defense. That should be enough to at least keep up.

JT Daniels has been steady and terrific so far – the passing game might not be explosive, but it works – and the creativity is there to mix up the attack to get all the parts involved.

The defense might have issues against the better quarterbacks, but the team leads all Big 12 teams in time of possession, the pass rush is solid, and the run D has been great over the last few weeks.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Texas Will Win

Can the D keep up with a strong attack?

Virginia Tech doesn’t have enough offensive weapons – West Virginia didn’t have much of a problem last week. However, Kansas was almost perfectly balanced in its 55-42 win, and Pitt keep on throwing without a problem in its win.

The D doesn’t take the ball away enough, and there aren’t quite enough tackles for loss even though the pass rush isn’t bad.

Texas might be coming off a rough loss to Texas Tech, but the offense was okay, Bijan Robinson has been outstanding over the last few games, and the offensive line should be able to more than hold its own against the Mountaineer defensive front.

Commit to the run early, and the offense will work.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas just can’t seem to finish the drill.

It was one stop away from beating Alabama. It was one stop away from beating Texas Tech. It has yet to go full-throttle with the go-go style Steve Sarkisian wants to play, but the deep shots will be there to open things up just enough to give Robinson room.

Daniels will do fine against the Longhorn secondary, but Texas will get out with a good win with a bit more happening from the run D.

Texas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

Texas has to make its shots. It’s just that simple.

Yes, put the ball through the round hole more than the other team does is a positive in this game, but Texas struggles to overcome days when it’s not shooting well.

No, it didn’t do anything from three in the win over TCU, but it was great inside and fantastic on the offensive glass.

When it got shut down by Texas Tech and shot 28% overall, that was it – it couldn’t win.

Texas is 12-1 when it makes 44% of its shots or more.

West Virginia is 2-13 when it allows teams to hit 41% from the field.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers have to be ultra-aggressive defensively from the outside – like they always are – and they have to do what they do to come up with lots of steals, lots of blocks, and lots of defensive stops.

The offense might not be anything special, but it’s great at attacking the rim and getting to the line.

Again, Texas needs to make its shots to win and can’t get this done if it goes cold and this turns into a free throw shooting contest. But …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia has lost its last five games and 12 of the last 13 because the defense has been hit or miss – and it’s missed a whole lot over the last few games.

Yeah, Texas has lost two of its last four games, but West Virginia isn’t Baylor or Texas Tech.

The Longhorns won’t wilt on the road under West Virginia’s defensive pressure.

Texas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

There’s still talent. There’s still a bowl game to shoot for, there’s still a chance to make something out of this lost season, and there’s still enough in place to change the narrative, at least a wee bit.

The offense has been painfully inconsistent, but the passing game went off in the loss to Kansas. The defense couldn’t stop the Jayhawks, or the Cyclones, or the Bears, or the Cowboys, or the Sooners …

But West Virginia can’t run a lick lately. It couldn’t move the ball at all against Oklahoma State in a 24-3 loss, and it was stuffed by Kansas State last week.

The Mountaineers have failed to run for 100 yards in six games and lost all six. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why West Virginia Will Win

Yeah, if your defense makes Kansas look like 2019 LSU, things aren’t going all that well.

If your first year head coach has to get a vote of confidence, things aren’t going well.

If your superstar running back is injured and out for the season – Bijan Robinson is done with a dislocated elbow – things aren’t going well.

It’s not that Texas has quit, it’s just not playing well.

West Virginia should be able to control the clock, the D has the ability to get behind the line and force a whole lot of mistakes, and the offense should be able to move with a good balance against a defense that’s getting ripped apart way too easily.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

4-6 is in the eye of the beholder.

West Virginia has lost two straight, but it gets the home finale against a dead Texas team walking before going to Kansas with a chance to get bowl eligible.

Texas has lost five straight, and it has to beat West Virginia on the road and take care of a pesky Kansas State team to get bowl eligible.

West Virginia will soon be bowl eligible.

Why Texas Will Win

Is it really just as simple as being at home or on the road? West Virginia is 4-0 in Morgantown and 0-2 on the road.

What’s been the problem away from home? The third down conversions weren’t quite there, and that came from not having a running game. The Mountaineers failed to hit 100 yards on the ground twice – and both times were in the losses.

Texas hasn’t been the slightest bit consistent, but it was somehow able to slip past Oklahoma State without any offensive production – the four takeaways helped – but that was an outlier. This offense is a whole lot better than it showed in Stillwater.

Why West Virginia Will Win

This has been a sneaky-good team with a good passing attack and a strong defense that has a good mix to beat anyone in the conference on the right day.

It all worked at home against Kansas State, with the defensive front stuffing the running game and allowing just 225 yards overall. But that’s what this D does. Only Oklahoma State was able to run well against it, and only Baylor was able to throw for more than 200 yards.

If the Texas that played last week doesn’t get the O going, and assuming West Virginia doesn’t turn it over four times, this should be close.

What’s Going To Happen

For all of the good things West Virginia has done so far, it hasn’t dealt with much in the way of firepower. Texas Tech really doesn’t have the pop you’d think it would, and Oklahoma State wasn’t quite right yet when the two played.

Texas won’t rip apart the Mountaineers, but the offense will be just effective enough to get out alive in yet another nail-biter for a team that played at the exact level of its competition.
