Texas Tech vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

West Virginia isn’t the West Virginia we’re used to.

It’ll have its moments defensively, but it doesn’t have the same suffocating D, the rebounds aren’t there, and there’s nothing much happening from three because the team doesn’t generate the extra pass.

That’s all death against one of the best defenses in college basketball.

Texas Tech isn’t going to allow a thing from the outside, and it forces way too many turnovers and mistakes for West Virginia to deal with, and again with the rebounds.

The Red Raiders should be able clean everything up.

As long as they’re not letting the Mountaineers get to the rim, they’ll be fine. But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia will come up with its share of turnovers.

No, it might not do enough to stop teams from scoring on the inside, but it’ll come up with enough steals to matter and it should be able to feed off the energy of the crowd and the big game.

This is the time to possibly turn the season back around. Texas Tech is coming off of an emotional home win over Texas, but before that it wasn’t all that great from three for long stretches and it’s not going to bomb its way to a win.

If the Mountaineers can grind down Texas Tech a bit and keep this in the 60s, they’ll have a shot.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech was able to win 78-65 a few weeks ago in Lubbock even though it couldn’t hit enough from three, hit got hit with a ton of fouls, and it wasn’t all that great on the line. What did it do well?

Rebound. It was +10 on the board, made up for the problems with a whopping 15 offensive boards – a season-high after the first three warm-up games of the year – and it should be able to get by again by winning on the glass.

West Virginia will have a run or two, but slow and steady should win this race in the second half.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

After pushing West Virginia hard in an 88-87 loss in Morgantown, Texas Tech got hot again. In the four Big 12 losses, two of them were by a total of two points, one was in overtime against Oklahoma State, and once was in a 68-60 loss against a terrific Baylor team.

The Red Raiders are playing well.

The pulled out a low-scoring slugfest with Oklahoma, they stepped up the the offense at LSU, and they hit the three-foot putt on the road against Kansas State with the threes dropping, and the defense doing a good enough job overall.

West Virginia has been a bit inconsistent from the field and especially from three, but …

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers are doing a great job on the road. They’ve won their last three away from Morgantown mainly by rebounding absolutely everything.

This team knows how to attack. It attacks the offensive boards, it forces a slew of turnovers, and it has no problems adapting and adjusting when needed when the shots aren’t falling.

Texas Tech is just okay at defending the three and for all the good things it’s doing lately, this isn’t one of the better shooting teams in the Big 12.

What’s Going To Happen

This should be terrific.

Texas Tech if back at home after playing three of its last four and five of its last seven away from Lubbock.

West Virginia will force enough mistakes will be relentless enough to make this a fight throughout, but Texas Tech is doing a good enough job on the offensive boards to at least not have a problem, and the defense will come up with a great performance late.

This will come down to the last few minutes and free throws. The Red Raiders will hit just a few more.

Texas Tech (11-4) vs West Virginia (10-4) Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Which West Virginia team will show up? It has alternated win-loss-win-loss over the seven games so far in the Big 12, with a fabulous performance in a blowout win over Kansas State on Saturday after losing to Texas a few weeks before.

If rest means anything, the Red Raiders have had nine days off since losing to Baylor. For a team that relies on defensive pressure even more than West Virginia does, the legs should be there to hold down a Mountaineer team that likes to generate points off of mistakes – the Red Raiders lead the Big 12 in turnover margin.

Why West Virginia Will Win

Make Texas Tech miss, beat Texas Tech.

Yeah, duh, keeping the other team from scoring helps, but the Red Raiders’ three Big 12 losses came when they hit 40% of their shots or fewer. Before the conference season, how did they lose to Houston? They couldn’t hit a thing from the outside and hit just 39% of their shots from the field.

The Mountaineers were able to clamp down on the Kansas State shooters on Saturday and have been killers at guarding the three. Oklahoma was the only team in the last five games to hit more than 30% from the outside, and even then it lost. This is the type of D that can give Texas Tech’s offense a very bad night, however …

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia hasn’t been holding that many teams under that 40% shooting mark that seems to matter to Texas Tech. Kansas State couldn’t get there, but that’s been in in Big 12 play.

It’s going to be a close, tough game with the two defenses battling it out and controlling the tempo. This is a good Red Raider road team that isn’t going to make the mistakes West Virginia needs.
