A look at Georgia QB Jamie Newman’s high school recruitment, highlights

Looking at Wake Forest transfer QB Jamie Newman, now with Georgia football, as a high school prospect and some of his best highlights

We know that Wake Forest transfer quarterback Jamie Newman is one of the highest-graded quarterbacks returning in 2020, but what was Newman like as a high school prospect before playing for Wake and later transferring to Georgia?

Newman was a 3-star prospect at Graham High School in Graham, North Carolina and was ranked as the No. 17 dual-threat quarterback in the 2015 recruiting class, according to 247Sports.

Newman recorded a 4.7 40 in high school and held offers from NC State, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, North Carolina and Wake Forest, among six others.

Although Newman took unofficial visits to Duke, Wake Forrest, North Carolina, Vanderbilt and East Carolina, his college decision really came down between Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, NC State and West Virginia. And ultimately signed with Wake Forest in Feburary of 2016.

See some of our favorite highlights from Newman’s high school days here:

David Pollack thinks Georgia QB Jamie Newman will be 1st round pick

Georgia Bulldogs legend David Pollack thinks current UGA quarterback Jamie Newman will be a first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft

Georgia Bulldogs legend David Pollack thinks current UGA quarterback Jamie Newman will be a first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Pollack, an ESPN College Football GameDay analyst, made the College Football Hall of Fame earlier this offseason.

The 2021 NFL Draft featured four quarterbacks selected in the first round (seven went before Jake Fromm). Kellen Mond, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Kyle Trask, Jamie Newman, and Mac Jones are among potential first round QBs in 2021. Of course forecasting first round QBs this far in advance is tough to predict. Nobody was projecting Joe Burrow to be a first round pick before the 2019 season.

Here’s what David Pollack had to say about Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman:

Newman has the potential to be a first round QB. NFL teams value quarterbacks with mobility more than ever. Newman will have to clean up his mistakes, but he’ll be surrounded by more talent than ever in Athens. Newman threw 11 interceptions last season to go along with 32 total touchdowns.

Newman’s experience at Wake Forest will be a plus for him. He went up against plenty of talented defenses during his time in the ACC. He’ll have a chance to boost his draft slot playing behind the best offensive line he’s ever had.

If Newman ends up as a first round pick, then that’s good news for Bulldog fans, who just saw Jake Fromm go in the fifth round. Will Jamie Newman be Georgia’s first QB selected in the first round since Matthew Stafford in 2009?

It’s a Trap! Which Game Could be a Trap Game for Notre Dame?

There could be a potential trap game in the Irish’s 2020 schedule. Which game could trip up them up?

As Admiral Akbar famously said in Star Wars Return of the Jedi, “It’s a trap!”and every year many college football teams find themselves in a trap games. Typically, the higher ranked team plays down to their opponent and the game is much closer than it should be, occasionally resulting in a surprising loss.

Looking ahead at the Irish schedule for 2020, there are plenty of marquee games on the slate, visiting Wisconsin in Lambeau, hosting Clemson, the regular season finale against USC in Memorial Stadium, those games will see Brian Kelly’s team hyped up for. What about the games that could potentially trip up the Irish?

I look at game that involves the Irish traveling, the game prior to a big game being played, and a team that returns some production from last year. The game that sticks out like a sore thumb to me is the September 26th contest in Charlotte against Wake Forest. A team that went 8-5 last year, lost just one game at home, returns their QB in Jaime Newman, leading receiver Sage Surratt and second leading rusher Kenneth Walker III. The Irish have two games after this game, traveling to Wisconsin and at home to Stanford, which are viewed as much bigger contests.

Bud Elliott of 247Sports sees it a bit differently that I do, marking the October game at Pittsburgh as Notre Dame’s trap game. He says “If Notre Dame gets through the Wisconsin and Stanford games, it could be primed for a letdown. And a physical Pitt team on the road could prove a bigger challenge on the field than on paper.” I get Elliott’s rationale picking this game, but with a bye right after, I view this as a game where the Irish can lick their wounds a bit after the two games ahead of it and get healthy following the week off.

There are other potential trap games in the Irish’s 2020 slate, Duke ahead of Clemson, Louisville before USC that could trip up Notre Dame. Which game do you see that could slow down the momentum for the Irish this season?

PFF says Georgia football ‘easily’ has SEC’s best QB-WR duo

According to metrics by Pro Football Focus, Georgia football has the SEC’s highest rated QB-WR duo for the upcoming 2020-2021 season.

Pro Football Focus released its top 10 players returning to the SEC in 2020 this Monday.

On the list were two Georgia players including sophomore wide receiver George Pickens at the number seven spot as well as incoming transfer QB Jamie Newman at the number three spot.

PFF evaluates all players at the professional and college level, which means their Newman rating is no joke. The Wake Forest transfer is being hyped up to hopefully have a Heisman caliber season with the Bulldogs and potentially a run at a national title.

PFF analyst Anthony Treash wrote in the article:

“With Jamie Newman now throwing Pickens the ball, the Bulldogs have easily the best quarterback-receiver duo in the SEC and one of the best in the country.”

Newman trailed only Joe Burrow on his passing grade of throws that were 20 yards or more last season, while Pickens had the third most catchable targets without a drop last season as a true freshman.  That right there is a scary sentence.

If the predictions are correct, Georgia is set to have one of the best offenses they’ve had in a while in 2020.  The QB-WR duo with Newman and Pickens along with a plethora of other offensive weapons can give Dawgs fans lots of confidence looking ahead.

Watch: UGA’s Jamie Newman shows off arm in Wake Forest highlights

UGA football’s Jamie Newman is a talented deep ball thrower and is expected to make an instant impact for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2020.

The Georgia Bulldogs have landed the top transfer quarterback in the country: Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman. It is about time the Dawgs landed a talented transfer QB after losing Justin Fields and Jacob Eason.

Newman scored 32 total touchdowns last season across twelve games (he missed the Florida State game with a shoulder injury). He is a great deep ball thrower. Newman had talented receivers at Wake Forest, but it’s not as dynamic as Georgia’s deep, talented offensive attack. Newman should help UGA get the ball down the field more in 2020.

Newman made his transfer announcement official in January via Twitter. He and four-star freshman quarterback Carson Beck will compete for the starting job this spring. Newman is the favorite to win the position battle and is being bet on as a Heisman dark horse.

Newman’s 2019 season at Wake Forest was solid for their standards. Newman helped the Demon Deacons go 8-5 en route to a 27-21 defeat against Michigan State in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Newman and the Demon Deacons averaged 31.8 points per game last season, which is more the UGA’s 30.8 points per game average.

Newman went 3-1 in 2018 as a starter. He won his first career start at No. 14 NC State, when he led the Deacons to a come-from-behind 27-23 win with game-winning 2-minute drill. He had 13 total TDs and four interceptions in 2018.

Highlight video is per Stadium:

Newman’s deep passing certainly stands out. He also has the wheels to be forced to be accounted for in the run game. UGA will run more RPO’s this season. Teams can no longer discount the QB when UGA runs the football. Newman’s rushing ability should help the Dawgs convert at a higher clip in the red zone.

Newman had pretty solid protection on most of his accurate deep throws. Georgia’s offensive linemen in 2019, who are still with the team in 2020, graded much better with PFF. Newman’s first big challenge will be at Alabama in week three.

The Georgia Bulldogs have landed the top transfer QB in the country: Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman. Watch his impressive 2019 highlights.

The Georgia Bulldogs have landed the top transfer quarterback in the country: Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman. UGA lost Justin Fields and Jacob Eason during the Kirby Smart era, so it is about time the Dawgs landed a talented transfer QB of their own.

Newman scored 32 total touchdowns last season and is a talented deep ball thrower. Newman had talented receivers at Wake Forest, but it’s not the same as Georgia’s deep, talented offensive attack.

Newman made his transfer announcement official via Twitter:

Let’s take a look back at Newman’s 2019 season at Wake Forest. Newman helped the Demon Deacons go 8-5 en route to an appearance in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.

His receivers were certainly no slouches. Sage Surratt is extremely talented and had over 1,000 yards receiving on the season. Georgia’s offensive line will be key in 2020, following the loss of starters, UGA will be cut out for itself trying to block the elite defensive lines of the SEC.

Twitter reacts as Jamie Newman transfers to UGA

Former Wake Forest QB Jamie Newman is transferring to the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Georgia Bulldogs have lost their fair share of quarterbacks to the transfer portal over the years: Justin Fields, Jacob Eason, Nick Marshall, Zach Mettenberger, and more. It’s about time UGA landed somebody in return: Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman.

Newman is the most talented transfer QB on the market and Georgia needed somebody to start while talented UGA QB signee Carson Beck learns the system and adjusts to the speed of college football. Newman threw for 26 touchdowns and ran for six more last season. He also threw eleven interceptions. He’ll have to cut down on the picks in Athens. Jake Fromm threw just five interceptions last season and eighteen in his UGA career.

Here’s how Georgia Bulldog fans, former coaches, and the college football world reacted to the signing on Twitter:

Former UGA coach Mark Richt predicts Newman will be the SEC’s best quarterback. Richt knows his football, so I’d trust him on this one:

Newman put up some impressive numbers according to PFF:

Newman must be careful around the notorious folding chairs in Athens:

This reminds me of politics:

Georgia football lands uber-talented transfer quarterback

UGA football lands uber-talented transfer quarterback Jamie Newman

The Georgia football program has been plugging holes left behind by this year’s team for the past month or so and that trend doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon.

After a plethora of moves including junior quarterback Jake Fromm’s decision to enter the 2020 NFL Draft, the Bulldogs will land graduate transfer quarterback Jamie Newman out of Wake Forest, sources have told UGA Wire.

Credit: Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

The rumors had been quickly swirling ever since Fromm’s announcement on Tuesday, but all of the Cade Mays transfer drama quickly drowned out the noise.

What a wild 48 hours it’s been for Georgia football. Thankfully, it looks like all the craziness is starting to sort itself out. The Dawgs will have Newman, along with four-stars Carson Beck and Dwan Mathis in their quarterback room. In addition, the Bulldogs also have the veteran Stetson Bennett and Nevada transfer Austin Kirksey.

Oh and rumor has it, Clemson backup Chase Brice might even be on his way to the Classic City. What a quarterback competition this would be.

Make sure to follow along with the UGA Wire for the latest updates on all things happening in Athens. We will be sure to update you on this whole development when we find out more.

Will UGA pursue most talented graduate transfer QB on the market?

The Georgia Bulldogs may be looking for the next great transfer quarterback, especially with Jake Fromm potentially entering the NFL Draft

The Georgia Bulldogs may be looking for the next great transfer quarterback this off-season. With Jake Fromm potentially entering into the NFL Draft after the Sugar Bowl, Georgia must be prepared to pursue all options this off-season. As it currently stands, four-star QB commit Carson Beck is set to be the favorite for Georgia’s starting job if Fromm heads to the NFL.

Georgia has lost their fair share of QBs to the transfer portal over the years, but is it time for UGA to go into the portal to secure a talented passer? It’d give Beck one year to develop and learn the system before starting. Beck wouldn’t have to start at Alabama early next season.

If Fromm doesn’t return, Kirby Smart may want to pursue Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman. Newman helped lead Wake Forest to a 9-5 season. He put up impressive numbers last season:

Other talented QBs in the portal include: K.J. Costello (Stanford), Feleipe Franks (Florida, no thanks), Justin Rogers (TCU), and Jack Allison (West Virginia). Who will be the next transfer to be a Heisman contender? The best bet would be Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman.

As for now, it is only speculation on where is next for Newman. UGA may not need a QB next season with either Fromm or Beck. Regardless, Georgia could use a back-up.
