On Day 1 of the USFL Player Draft, a trio of former New York Giants had their names called: Quarterbacks Clayton Thorson, Kyle Lauletta and Case Cookus.

On Wednesday, the returning league conducted their second and final day of the player draft. And similar to the first, some former Giants were among those selected.

Running back Mike Weber, who had a cup of coffee with the Giants in 2021, was selected in the 27th round. He will play for the New Jersey Generals, whose first-round picks were announced by Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Derrick Dillon, who was with the Giants from 2020-2021, was selected in the 15th round by the Tampa Bay Bandits. He will be joined by former Big Blue guard Damien Mama, who was selected in 23rd round.

Finally, safety Orion Stewart, who spent time with the Giants in 2018, was selected by the Michigan Panthers in Round 18.

It’s possible, if not likely, that other former Giants will find their way onto USFL rosters as team’s begin to sign undrafted free agents.

13 players who spent time with Cardinals selected in USFL draft

The eight-team USFL selected 13 former Cardinals players in their 35-round draft. Two former Cardinals draft picks were selected.

The USFL completed the second day of their two-day, 35-round player draft on Wednesday. The eight-team league hopes to capture the football-hungry audience with its season scheduled from April to July.

It gives players who have not been able to make it in the NFL a chance to play professionally and perhaps show enough to warrant another shot on an NFL roster.

On the first day and first 12 rounds of their draft, eight former Arizona Cardinals players, most of whom spent very little time with the team, were drafted by USFL teams.

Over the two days and 35 rounds, a total of 13 players who spent time with the Cardinals were selected.

We run down each player below.

Former Ohio State running back selected in USFL Draft

Former Ohio State running back selected in USFL Draft #GoBucks #USFL #USFLDraft

The United States Football League has finally ender their draft and in total, we have seen three former Ohio State Buckeyes hear their name called with the latest being the supremely talented Mike Weber. The former Big Ten Freshman of the Year was selected with the third selection in the 27th round by the New Jersey Generals.

I know it sounds like the 27th round is a bit late for someone of Weber’s caliber, but the USFL Draft segmented the rounds by position and this means that technically he was just the third running back selected in the draft.

Weber was with the Buckeyes from 2015 to 2018 and is most remembered for his phenomenal 2016 season in which he was named All-Big Ten and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. After being drafted in the seventh round, Weber had shots with a few NFL teams and will now get a shot at joining the ranks of Herschel Walker as a General great.

Lots of familiar faces in the mix.

After landing six selections on the first day of the USFL Draft, many more stars from the Mountain West’s past heard their names called in the second and final day of the new spring league’s dispersal process.

As on day one, the eight USFL teams selected players in a “snake draft” fashion, picking from different position pools in each round (wide receivers from rounds 13 to 17, safeties in round 18 and 19, and so on). Where the Michigan Panthers had four Mountain West players in their first twelve selections yesterday, many more USFL squads got in on the action this time around to build depth on their respective rosters (though the Panthers did select three more athletes from the conference, giving them seven in all).

Of note, the new Pittsburgh Maulers, led by veteran NFL running backs coach Kirby Wilson, crafted something of a San Jose State reunion in the Steel City. After selecting former Spartans quarterback Josh Love on day one, the Maulers picked three more SJSU players on day two.

Pittsburgh also selected former San Diego State linebacker Kyahva Tezino, giving San Diego State four selections altogether, bested only by San Jose State and its conference-high seven picks. Colorado State and New Mexico finished the two-day process with two draft picks while Fresno State, Hawaii, and Utah State had one apiece.

Two former Longhorns selected in the USFL draft

The professional football dream lives on for two former Longhorns.

Two former Longhorns have a prime opportunity to play football at the professional level after Tuesday’s USFL draft.

What is the USFL you ask? It’s known as the United States Football League, which is a revamped version of the 1985 league that gives athletes a chance to continue their playing career while also having a goal of making them more well rounded individuals.

Players and even the staff members will be compensated for partaking in football obviously, but also have a chance to obtain a college degree through Strategic Education’s Capella University and Strayer University. The season itself is just 10 games with two additional playoff weeks.

Former Longhorns Brennan Eagles and Davante Davis were selected in the draft. This draft is a tad different than the NFL, as there a total of 35 rounds, but in each round the eight teams have to chose a specified position. For example, the first round consisted of only quarterbacks being taken.

Starting with Eagles, who decided to forgo his senior year at Texas to declare for the 2020 NFL draft, was selected by the Philadelphia Stars in the 15th round. Eagles went undrafted by the NFL, and had a brief stint with the Cowboys prior to being cut. As a Longhorn he racked up 61 catches for over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Davis was taken in the ninth round by the Tampa Bay Bandits. He, similar to Eagles, went undrafted and was signed as a free agent by the Seattle Seahawks. He was placed on injured reserved and eventually waived by Seattle.

This league gives both Eagles and Davis a chance to show out, and maybe get back on the radar of an NFL team.

Tracking where Michigan State football alumni were selected in the USFL draft

Tracking where Michigan State football alumni were selected in the USFL draft

The USFL draft was this week, and this should be exciting to football fans as it adds another place for football players to go to in order to work on their craft, put more highlight plays on tape, and hopefully impress an NFL team down the road, or, simply continue playing a game they love.

There were a handful of Michigan State football alumni selected in the draft, and you can see where they ended up below.

Calvin Ashley drafted in sixth round of USFL Draft

Former Auburn player Calvin Ashley is back playing football.

Calvin Ashely is back playing football. The former Auburn offensive tackle was drafted by the New Jersey Generals in the USFL Draft on Tuesday night in Birmingham.

The spring football league’s eight teams drafted tackles from Rounds 5 to 7, making him the No. 11 tackle taken overall.

Ashley came to Auburn as a five-star recruit and redshirted in 2017. He played in five games in 2018 before transferring to Florida Atlantic University and eventually Florida A&M.

He opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns around COVID-19 before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 as an undrafted free agent.

He spent just three months on the roster before leaving the team and was waived but the Bucs.

The USFL will be a great chance to showcase the athleticism and size (6-foot-7, 330-pounds) that made him such a high-profile recruit.

The league is set to start the season on April 16 in Birmingham. The entire season will be played at Protective Stadium and Legion Field.

Former Sooners wide receiver Jeff Badet selected by the Michigan Panthers in the USFL draft

Former Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Jeff Badet selected by the Michigan Panthers of the USFL.

While Oklahoma Sooners get ready for the NFL draft, the USFL is getting its league together with their initial draft for the 2022 season, which will kick off on April 16th.

Though no Oklahoma Sooners heard their name called on the first day of the draft yesterday, today has had some OUDNA involved.

Getting back to playing professional football is Jeff Badet, who was selected by the Michigan Panthers of the USFL.

Badet played just one season for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2017, collecting 26 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns. In three prior seasons at Kentucky, the former wide receiver caught 82 passes for 1,385 yards, and seven touchdowns. He started 18 games for the Wildcats and two for the Sooners before going onto the NFL where he played in three games for Washington without being targeted.

Badet is joined by wide receivers Lance Lenoir, Quincy Adeboyejo, and Ray Bolden.

Former Sooners OLB Emmanuel Beal selected by the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL

In its inaugural draft, the USFL’s Tampa Bay Bandits selected former Oklahoma Sooners linebacker Emmanuel Beal.

Though the NFL is the king of professional football, but with the demand for football at an all-time high, the USFL launched this winter to be an offseason option. Holding its inaugural draft for the eight-team league, they’re drafting by position group and the Oklahoma Sooners are showing up.

Earlier today it was former wide receiver Jeff Badet getting selected by the Michigan Panthers and now it’s the Tampa Bay Bandits dipping into the Sooners well with outside linebacker Emmanuel Beal.

Beal played two seasons for the Oklahoma Sooners, starting 24 games and received All-Big 12 honorable mention in 2017. Over those two seasons, he recorded 101 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. He also had one interception, two forced fumbles, and three pass deflections.

The USFL will open its season on April 16th, 2022.
