Former UGA defensive end suffers season-ending injury

A former Georgia Bulldog, who transferred to Missouri this offseason, will miss the 2024 season with a significant knee injury.

The Missouri Tigers were hit with unfortunate news: Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Darris Smith suffered a knee injury in practice. The injury will force him to miss the 2024 season, according to Eli Hoff of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The edge rusher appeared in 16 games as a reserve over his first two collegiate seasons with UGA before transferring to Missouri over the summer. He was in a competition for the starting job with Michigan State transfer Zion Young, but he’ll have to wait another year to start his first game in the SEC.

“We are devastated by the injury to Darris,” head coach Eli Drinkwitz said,“He was having an outstanding camp and was poised to have a great year. We will support Darris in his recovery and look forward to him returning stronger than before.”

For the Tigers, it’s more than likely Young will fill the second edge rusher spot opposite Johnny Walker Jr. and replace 2024 first-round NFL draft pick Darius Robinson Jr. on the end. Regardless, it’s a blow for Georgia and Missouri fans looking to see how Darris Smith would’ve performed in a more expansive role.

Former Georgia Bulldogs redshirt sophomore offensive guard Cameron Kinnie has announced he will be transferring to UCF.

Former Georgia Bulldogs redshirt sophomore offensive guard Cameron Kinnie has announced his transfer destination. Kinnie is a former three-star recruit out of Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia.

Cameron Kinnie is transferring to the UCF Knights. His transfer will help strengthen UCF’s offensive front. Kinnie joins another Georgia transfer, Divaad Wilson, on UCF’s roster.

Former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is the head coach at UCF. Malzahn was fired up to land a commitment from Kinnie:

Kinnie redshirted the 2020 season and did not appear in a contest during the 2021 season. Kinnie primarily played on Georgia’s scout team. He was projected as a depth player again in 2022.

The former Collins Hill star is looking for more playing time at UCF and will stay close to home. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound offensive lineman has the talent to compete for a significant role with the Knights.

Kinnie signed with Georgia as a defensive tackle recruit in the class of 2020. He changed positions to the offensive line, but never saw the field. Georgia defensive tackles Nazir Stackhouse, Jalen Carter and Warren Brinson were also members of the class of 2020.

We wish Cameron Kinnie the best of luck at his new home. He thanked Georgia and announced his commitment to UCF via Twitter:

Breaking: Arik Gilbert makes transfer decision

Arik Gilbert is headed to the Florida Gators

Sunday, former five-star tight end Arik Gilbert finalized his transfer decision. The former LSU superstar entered the portal in December and will be heading to Gainesville to join Coach Dan Mullen and company.

Of course, this is likely not the news Georgia fans were hoping to hear, but luckily, the Bulldogs do have plenty of weapons on offense, including former five-star tight end Darnell Washington returning.

Losing Gilbert to the Gators certainly hurts, but Georgia should be alright on offense next year. However, putting the former LSU star in an offense like Mullen’s will be a tough task to defend.

Kyle Pitts and that wheel-route play sure do ring a bell …

Georgia is likely still the favorite in the SEC East heading into 2021, but Jacksonville just got much more interesting.

Former 5-star LSU TE Arik Gilbert sends interesting set of tweets

Former five-star LSU tight-end Arik Gilbert sent out an interesting set of tweets on Sunday night

Arik Gilbert, the former five-star tight end out of Marietta High School, has been the talk of Baton Rouge over the past few weeks for his decision to opt out of the 2020 season.

Gilbert, a 6’5″, 253-pound freshman superstar, was coveted by the Bulldogs, Crimson Tide and Tigers in his final recruitment stage last year.

Now, it appears as though the former five-star could be on the move after just one year with LSU and Coach Ed Orgeron.

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve heard anything on Gilbert, so Sunday night’s tweets were a bit of a re-fresher to his status.

Gilbert has been quiet on social media since news broke of his potential transfer and it was noted that he felt a bit homesick during his season with the Tigers, per Coach Orgeron.

Now, one would assume the highly athletic tight-end is taking some needed time off to think about his future and decide on what lies ahead.

Of course, Orgeron and the LSU program have mentioned they would gladly welcome Gilbert back next season if he is open to it.

Stay tuned to UGAWire as we continue to track Gilbert’s recruitment…

Father of former Georgia OL Cade Mays sues UGA over severed finger

Cade Mays’ dad is suing UGA over a severed finger he suffered during a recruiting visit. Now, Mays is transferring to the Tennessee Vols.

Georgia Bulldog offensive lineman Cade Mays is transferring to Tennessee in a surprising move this week, according a report Wednesday by ESPN. Mays is joining his brother Cooper in Knoxville. Mays has a path to immediate eligibility thanks to a lawsuit that’s suing UGA and the chair manufacturer over his father’s severed finger.

Mays should be allowed to join his brother without sitting out a season, but this lawsuit is being filed very late in the process. Mays’ father severed off a portion of his finger on a fold-up chair on a recruiting visit in 2017.

Mays went on to commit to UGA following the incident, where former UGA offensive line coach Sam Pittman picked up the severed finger and immediately put it on ice. Now, Pittman is tabbed as the head coach at Arkansas. Pittman’s departure is another likely reason for Mays’ transfer. The lawsuit was filed shortly after Pittman left.

Mays’ father is now being represented by attorney Tom Mars, who has experience with NCAA eligibility cases. The NCAA is impossible to predict, so we shall see if they grant the waiver. Mars is already getting into it with UGA’s administration and respected UGA sportswriter Radi Nabulsi:
