Davin Bellamy becomes the first player to receive the award of Defensive Player of the Week for the USFL’s inaugural season.

Last weekend, the United States Football League (USFL) returned for the first time since 1985, and Davin Bellamy, former UGA linebacker and member of the 2017 SEC championship team, had a breakout game.

Bellamy, who signed with the Houston Texans after going undrafted in 2018, was selected by the New Orleans Breakers as the first pick of the second round of the 2022 USFL draft. The 6-foot-5 linebacker spent time with five NFL teams before eventually landing with the Breakers.

On Saturday, Bellamy’s dominant performance came in the Breakers’ 23-17 win over the Philadelphia Stars.

He recorded 3 sacks, one of which came on third-and-twelve play that set up an unsuccessful field goal attempt by the Stars. In addition to the sacks, Bellamy had 6 tackles and 4 solo stops.

Due to his stellar showing, Bellamy became the first player to be awarded the Defensive Player of the Week for the USFL’s inaugural season.

At UGA, Bellamy played in all 15 games of the 2017 season, and he recorded 34 stops, 7.5 tackles for a loss, 5 sacks, and had the third-most quarterback pressures on the team with 14.

Titans sign WR Kalija Lipscomb, waive 2 after rookie minicamp

Lipscomb was one of four players the Titans invited to rookie minicamp.

One of the four players the Tennessee Titans invited to rookie minicamp on a tryout basis has been signed by the team.

The Titans announced on Monday that Vanderbilt product and wide receiver Kalija Lipscomb has been inked, one of three moves Tennessee made. Along with the signing, the Titans also waived wide receiver Rashard Davis, and linebacker Davin Bellamy with a non-football injury.

The 6-foot-1, 201-pound wideout tallied 198 catches for 2,356 yards and 22 touchdowns during his collegiate career. His best season came in 2019 when he finished with career-highs in catches (87), yards (916) and touchdowns (nine).

Lipscomb’s chances of sticking with the Titans through the offseason and making the roster are slim even with the team’s need at the position, but perhaps he can latch on with the practice squad after final cuts are made.

Jim Wyatt of Titans Online provided some clips of Lipscomb in action from Day 2 of Titans rookie minicamp on Saturday.

Davin Bellamy declines Bengals offer to rejoin Texans

Davin Bellamy leaves the Bengals for the Texans.

The Cincinnati Bengals were busy locking up players on futures contracts in recent weeks but will end up missing out on one they wanted to keep.

That one is linebacker Davin Bellamy, who opted to turn down a reserves/futures offer so he could go rejoin the Houston Texans, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Bellamy had initially joined the Texans after the 2018 draft and lasted until this August during final cuts. The Bengals had scooped him up and placed him on the practice squad late in September.

While a small note, this is another nod toward a complete revamp for the Bengals in the linebacker corps. this offseason, pending the future of someone like Nick Vigil, whose contract expires this offseason. Ditto for pass-rushing depth on the edge.
