Kamryn Babb recognized with Big Ten Sportsmanship Award

Another off-the-field honor for Kamryn Babb. #GoBucks

Former Ohio State wide receiver Kamryn Babb has been recognized as one of 28 student-athletes deserving of the Big Ten’s Outstanding Sportsmanship Award the conference announced on Tuesday. Women’s soccer player Emaly Vatne was also named as a recipient for the 2022-2023 academic year.

According to the release, “All Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.”

Babb’s story isn’t new to most Ohio State football fans. Out of St. Louis, Missouri, he endured five knee surgeries and finally got on the field last year for one of the most memorable moments of the season when he caught a touchdown pass on November 12 — the first and only catch of his OSU career. It set off a celebration that will always be remembered because of his perseverance and character.

Despite minimal time on the field, Babb was still a two-time captain as voted by his teammates, was the Bill Willis “Block” O jersey honoree for last season, and is a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.

That all speaks volumes about the person that he is and what he has in front of him. We congratulate him and Vatne for the way they conducted themselves in the scarlet and gray.

Fan favorite Kamryn Babb lands job with Ohio State athletic department

Kamryn Babb will be staying at Ohio State to help future generations of Buckeye athletes. #GoBucks

Kamryn Babb is returning to Ohio State, but it will not be on the football field. Instead, the university announced Monday the former Buckeye receiver has accepted a job with the Eugene D. Smith Leadership Institute.

Babb was a highly touted recruit coming to OSU but dealt with injury after injury that kept him from realizing his potential. Even with multiple ACL tears, Babb stayed positive. He was such an inspiration to his teammates that he was named a captain in his final two years as a Buckeye. Babb also gave Ohio State fans one of the season’s most memorable moments when he made his first catch as a Buckeye for a touchdown against Indiana.

Babb will trade his pads and cleats for a suit and tie as a program coordinator helping provide leadership training and career development opportunities for OSU athletes. According to Ohio State’s website, the Smith Leadership Institute “provides leadership, character and career development for all Ohio State student-athletes in order to best prepare them for life after graduation.”

Babb earned his bachelor’s degree in communications and received a master’s degree in kinesiology this past December. It is clear this young man is well-equipped for the job and will have the opportunity to help young athletes, using his own experiences, to help them prepare for life after sports.

Buckeye Nation reacts to Ohio State receiver Kamryn Babb’s big moment

So inspirational and all of Buckeye Nation came out to celebrate and congratulate Kamryn Babb. #GoBucks

If you’re a loyal Ohio State football fan, we don’t have to recount the story of wide receiver Kamryn Babb. However, if you aren’t, here’s the CliffsNotes version.

Babb is a fifth-year senior who has never been able to get on the field to contribute because of an almost unfair number of injuries.

The four-star prospect and top-100 recruit out of Saint Louis underwent four ACL tears and subsequent rehabs. Despite never recording a catch, he has done nothing but encourage the team and grind through the adversity simply for a shot at getting on the field.

He means so much to the team he was voted a team captain two straight years. He was even given the honor of wearing the “Block 0 jersey,” signifying toughness, accountability and the highest character. It’s a tradition that honors former Ohio State legend Bill Willis, who broke the color barrier in the NFL.

On Saturday, Babb had his moment. Honestly, it might be the most encouraging and inspirational thing I’ve seen while following and covering the team. Not only did Babb record his first catch in an OSU uniform, but he also did it by finding the end zone for OSU’s last score against Indiana.

After the touchdown reception, utter chaos ensued, but not in a bad way. The entire team has been pulling for Babb and seemingly everyone from the coaches, players, and support personnel joined in the celebration.

We’ve got some of the best Twitter reactions and celebrations from Babb’s big moment, and it really is a testament to the family atmosphere of what this Ohio State program is.

Ohio State erupts with emotion as courageous Kamryn Babb catches TD pass

Kamryn Babb of Ohio State caught a TD pass after suffering 4 ACL injuries in his career

One touchdown — let alone the final one — by Ohio State in its 56-14 romp over Indiana on Saturday stood out.

Why?

Because of what it took for Kamryn Babb to get to the end zone as a Buckeye. Babb was a four-star prospect coming out of high school before landing in Columbus.

He has had 4 ACL injuries in his life and kept coming back.

That’s why Ryan Day and everyone on the sidelines were emotional when Babb caught an 8-yard touchdown pass with 8:49 left in the fourth quarter. It was Babb’s first college catch, too.

The videos and pictures tell the story.

Babb’s college career:

• Kam is in his fifth season with the program and has graduated with his degree in communications
• He is a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, and has two seasons of eligibility
• Was voted a team captain by his teammates in the fall of 2021, but missed playing the season because of a knee injury
• Also missed the 2018 and 2019 seasons with knee injuries, respectively
• Realized his first action as a Buckeye during the 2020 season, playing in seven games and missing only the game at Michigan State

Five things we think we learned from Ohio State football’s win over Indiana

Five things we are pretty sure we learned about Ohio State against Indiana Saturday. #GoBucks

Well, that went about as expected. Ohio State was a heavy favorite against Indiana at home and made good on that with an impressive 56-14 victory Saturday afternoon. The offense was more balanced than what we’ve seen over the last few weeks, even without some key pieces available.

We like to reflect upon every game that the Buckeyes play and pick out some main storylines to take away to formulate where this team is. There were all kinds of layers in this one with some of the questions about the running game and the Heisman race for C.J. Stroud, just to name a few.

Oh, and there was a little bit of weather to deal with as well, so yeah.  Here are five things we think we learned after the Buckeyes’ annihilation of Indiana on Saturday.

Ohio State football issues availability report for Rutgers game, notable names missing

Ohio State football issues availability report for Rutgers game, notable names missing #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program has issued the availability report for the game against Rutgers, and there are a few notable names that will not be taking part in game No. 4.

With the game under Wisconsin under its belt, Ohio State has a few guys that were bumped and bruised against the Badgers, but most of the names on the list just transitioned over from the previous week. The most notable name on this list is star wide receiver, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who is listed as unavailable for today.

At this point it is getting concerning that Jaxon Smith-Njigba is still not active, but this may have less to do with his injury and more to do with Rutgers being inferior.

Ohio State football names six captains for 2022

Here are your six Ohio State football captains for the 2022 season, announced by OSU on Saturday. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team continues to make its journey through fall camp on the way to the start of the 2022 season.

On Saturday, as part of that journey, the team named six captains. The players named can forever be a part of a very short and exclusive list for the program. More than just being leaders on the field this fall, they’ll be looked at as an integral part of one of the most respected and tradition-rich programs in the history of the sport.

They’ll be noted as a captain on team reunions and functions from here on out, and be able to take part in the captain’s breakfast that’s held every homecoming.

Here are the six Ohio State football captains, as chosen by a players’ vote, complete with a bio provided by the OSU football program.

Ohio State football reveals player that will wear “Block 0” uniform

This is a well-deserved honor. #GoBucks

It’s a tradition that started when the NCAA allowed the number “0” to be worn in college football back in 2020. Former Ohio State defensive end Jonathon Cooper was the first to start this new tradition that honors former OSU player Bill Willis, a pioneer in breaking the color barrier in the NFL.

Willis wore No. 99, but the Buckeye program took the opportunity to recognize the importance of Willis with the new Block 0 jersey. Last year’s wearer of the jersey was offensive lineman Thayer Munford, though he could not wear it in games because of NCAA rules that only allow offensive linemen to wear numbers between 50-79.

And now, we have been made aware of which player will don the Block 0 jersey in 2022. It is none other than receiver Kamryn Babb, and it makes a lot of sense. The player that has the honor of wearing the Block 0 jersey is one that displays “toughness, accountability and the highest of character.”

Babb has shown that and more. The 6-foot, 210-pound fifth-year senior came to the program as a high 4-star prospect in the 2018 class. He had already sustained a torn ACL in high school and has run into the same injury-plagued bad luck during his time as a Buckeye. All told, the St. Louis native has had to rehab and recover from four ACL tears but is a returning captain that means much more to the team than what he has accomplished so far on the field in game action.

And yeah, as a receiver, Babb can wear the Block 0 jersey in a game.

While he continues to try and show that he’s a receiver that can make an impact as a dynamic playmaker on the field for this year, there’s is little doubt what Babb means to the program and what he has had to deal with working his way through some pretty unfortunate events.

It’s hard not to root for Babb to be a big part of this team in game action for 2022, and we’ll sure be a part of the camp that looks to see what his career still holds.

Ohio State announces six captains for this fall

Ohio State announced its six team captains for the 202 football season on Friday evening.

Being a captain of a historical program like Ohio State is something nobody can ever take away from you. It sets you apart and allows for special things like the captains’ dinner and place among a select few to ever run through the tunnel on the banks of the Olentangy.

The Buckeyes lost all of their seasoned captains from last season and announced six new captains for this fall on Friday evening. These six will hopefully lead the team towards a fifth-straight Big Ten championship run and potential appearance in another College Football Playoff.

Having all new captains snaps a streak of seven consecutive seasons in which there was at least one returning. It’s also the fewest number of captains since the 2015 team. All renditions of The Ohio State Buckeyes have had at least seven named since then. However, just because it’s six new captains doesn’t mean the lot is all a bunch of inexperienced players, far from it.

Here are your six captains of the Ohio State football team in 2021.
