LSU baseball bounces back in midweek win over Louisiana

The Tigers got back into form with a big win on Tuesday night.

After a rough weekend against Arkansas, where LSU was swept in three games by the Razorbacks, it got back in the win column on Tuesday night with a commanding 8-4 win over ULL.

[autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] got the start on the mound and pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and eight strikeouts. LSU drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning when [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit a solo home run to make it 1-0 Tigers after two innings.

However, the Ragin’ Cajuns took the lead after two solo home runs, one in the third inning and one in the fourth inning as they took a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, LSU broke the score open with five runs in the inning. It started with a two-run home run by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to make it 3-2 Tigers.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] followed that with a two-RBI single with bases loaded to increase their lead to 5-2.

[autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to score the final run of the fourth inning and make it 6-2 LSU. In the bottom of the fifth inning, LSU tagged on two more runs as [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2 Tigers and then [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] hit an RBI double to score the Tigers’ second run of the fifth inning and make it 8-2 LSU.

After an LSU error in the top of the seventh inning, the Ragin Cajuns scored two runs to cut the lead to 8-4. That was the closest UL would come to making a comeback.

With the win, LSU moves to 24-12 on the year. It will start a three-game series against Missouri this Thursday night at Alex Box Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball brings out the brooms in Game 3 win over Mississippi State

LSU secured the sweep with a dominant performance on Sunday.

LSU came into Sunday’s Game 3 going for its first SEC series sweep of the year, but in order to bring out the brooms, the offense needed to bring out the sticks.

The Tigers did just that in a blowout 13-3 win that capped off an impressive road series.

[autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers and, in the bottom of the first inning, Mississippi State hit a solo home run off of him to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit into a double play, but [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] was able to score and tie the game at 1-1.

Dutton was replaced by [autotag]Grant Taylor[/autotag] after pitching three innings, his final line was 3 innings pitched with four hits, one run, and one strikeout. In the top of the fifth inning, LSU busted the game open with a five-run inning. It started with a [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] RBI single that scored [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag].

[autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] followed that up with an RBI single to score Josh Stevenson. That was followed by a three-run bomb by [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] to make it 6-1 Tigers.

In the top of the sixth inning, Morgan hit an RBI double to score McManus and make it 7-1 LSU through six innings of play.

In the top of the seventh, [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] hit a solo home run to extend the lead to 8-1.

That was followed by another Pearson homer as it was the freshman’s best day at the plate so far this season, and he made it 9-1.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs cut into the lead as they hit a two-run home run against Tayor to cut the lead to 9-3. But LSU got those runs back, plus more. Crews started it off with a two-RBI double.

Doughty followed with an RBI double and Pearson had an RBI single to make it 13-3 LSU headed to the bottom of the eighth. [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning and secured the sweep for the Tigers.

With the win and the sweep, LSU moves to 23-9 (7-5 SEC) on the year. The next game will be Tuesday night against Lamar University with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball dominates Louisiana-Monroe, extends winning streak to 3

It’s Brayden Jobert’s world, and we’re all just living in it.

“YOU CAN PUCKER UP AND KISS THAT BABY GOODBYE! HE’S HOTTER THAN A FIRE ANT ON A FEVER BLISTER! Jobert, swinging it like Excalibur right now,” play-by-play commentator Lyn Rollins proclaimed during Tuesday night’s game against Louisiana-Monroe.

It is truly Brayden Jobert’s world; we are all just living in it. Facing the Warhawks at Alex Box Stadium, the Tigers picked up right where they left off on Sunday.

[autotag]Tyrann Mathieu[/autotag] was back in the bayou to make the first pitch, and that was the start of a great night for LSU as it pushed its winning streak to three games with a dominant 15-4 win heading into a weekend series against the Auburn Tigers.

In the top of the first inning, ULM hit a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead, but that was the last sliver of hope it would get in this game. In the bottom of the inning, the scoring spree started for the Tigers. First, [autotag]Josh Berry[/autotag] tied the game up on an RBI single.

Second, Jobert hit a three-RBI double to make it 4-1.

Third, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI double, and last, [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit an RBI single to make the score 6-1 LSU after one inning. The Tigers would get on the board again in the bottom of the third when Dugas hit a solo home run to left field to make it 7-1.

In the top of the fourth, [autotag]Cale Lansville[/autotag] came in to pitch and he surrendered three Warhawk runs to make it 7-4 after four innings. LSU scored again in the bottom of the sixth when Jobert hit a solo homer to make it 8-4.

That was followed by a [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] sacrifice fly to make it 9-4 after six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a past ball and Jobert hit yet another home run. This time, it was a three-run shot to make it 13-4 LSU after seven innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag] was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another run, and [autotag]Jack Merrifield[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly to make it 15-4 headed to the top of the ninth. [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] came in to finish the game on the mound in the ninth and worked a quick 1-2-3 inning.

With the win, LSU moves to 18-7 on the year and 3-3 in conference play. It will play the Auburn Tigers at home starting this Thursday, with the first pitch of Game 1 scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at The Box.

Tigers going ‘back to the drawing board’ after rough weekend on the mound

LSU coach Jay Johnson said the Tigers are reevaluating pitching ahead of this weekend’s series at Florida.

Last weekend, coach Jay Johnson and the LSU Tigers dropped their first conference series of the season to Texas A&M. One of the major reasons was starting pitching.

Going into the weekend series, only Johnson knew the status of the Tigers’ ace Blake Money after he suffered an injury in the Tulane game. Ty Floyd got the start on the mound for the Friday night game, instead.

A key goal for any starting pitcher is to try and get a “quality start” every time you pitch. Per MLB.com, “a starting pitcher records a quality start when he pitches at least six innings and allows three earned runs or fewer. A starting pitcher has two jobs: to prevent runs and get outs. The quality start statistic helps to quantify which pitchers did a “quality” job in those two departments.”

Out of the three conference games last week, LSU recorded zero quality starts. Floyd pitched for only two innings and gave up two runs, Money pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up four runs, and Hilliard pitched four innings and gave up five runs.

That is a total of 11 earned runs in only 9 1/3 innings, good for an ERA of 10.88.

That is an abhorrent number for any pitching staff. Those numbers have led coach Johnson to make some changes. The Tigers take on Louisiana Tech on Wednesday before traveling to Florida to take on the No. 8 Gators in Gainesville this weekend.

Something has to give for this pitching staff. According to Johnson, the Tigers are going to go “back to the drawing board” as far as the starting rotation is concerned and re-evaluate every pitcher on the roster to see who can get some quality starts and win some games.

The Tigers currently sit at 15-5 and they are ranked the No. 18 team in the country, but coach Johnson knows this team is capable of playing much better than it is right now.

LSU baseball drops Game 1 of SEC opening series against Texas A&M

With Ty Floyd on the mound, the Tigers lost their SEC opener on Friday night.

SEC play started tonight in Alex Box Stadium as the LSU Tigers played Game 1 of a three-game home series against the Texas A&M Aggies. Ty Floyd got the start on the mound for the Tigers after Blake Money was scratched with an injury.

It was a rough night for Floyd, who lasted just two innings in a 6-4 loss to the Aggies in which LSU used eight pitchers. The Tigers will now have to work their way out of a one-game hole in the first series of conference play.

LSU got the scoring started in the bottom of the first as Cade Doughty hit an RBI single to Right Field to make it 1-0.

The Aggies struck back in the top of the second inning with a pair of solo home runs to take a 2-1 lead after two innings. Floyd was replaced by Grant Taylor in the top of the third inning after allowing three hits, two runs and one walk with just one strikeout. LSU would tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jordan Thompson hit an oppo-taco to right field.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Tyler McManus joined in on the home run party as he hit a solo shot to right field to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead after five innings.

In the top of the seventh inning, Texas A&M plated two runs after a couple of LSU errors to give them a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Brayden Jobert reached on an RBI fielder’s choice to tie it up at 4-4 heading to the final inning of play.

Eric Reyzelman came in to try and shut the Aggies down and give the Tigers a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth, but things didn’t quite go as planned.

He struck out the first batter he faced, but then he gave up a double and an RBI single to give A&M a 5-4 lead with only one out. He forced a flyout for out No. 2, but then a runner advanced on a wild pitch and he walked the next batter. So, Trey Shaffer entered the game.

Shaffer walked the only batter he faced and was replaced by Devin Fontenot with the bases loaded and two outs. The Aggies hit a single off of Fontenot to score another run to make it 6-4 before LSU finally got out of the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers had to score two runs to tie it up and three to walk it off.

Due up were Bianco, McManus, and Morgan. Bianco struck out for out number one. Stevenson came in to pinch hit for McManus and he flew out to left field for out number two. Finally, Tre Morgan struck out to end the ball game as LSU lost 6-4 to A&M in game one.

LSU will play game two against Texas A&M tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT at ‘The Box’.

Tigers fall to No. 1 Texas on Day 2 of the Shriners College Classic

The Tigers suffered another setback against the nation’s top team in Houston on Saturday night.

Sometimes, it just isn’t your night. Saturday was certainly not LSU’s.

Coming into the game, the Texas Longhorns were unanimously ranked as the No.1 team in the country. They showed why in Houston as they beat LSU 6-1 on Day 2 of the Shriners Children’s College Classic, bringing UT’s record on the weekend to 2-0 after it defeated Tennessee 7-2 on Friday night.

The Longhorns’ overall record stands at a perfect 11-0 on the year, and they managed to add a top-10 win to the resume. Meanwhile, the loss drops the Tigers to 9-2 after a walk-off win over Oklahoma to start the event on Friday.

Ty Floyd got the start on the mound for the Tigers, and he was rolling pretty well until an error in the second inning flipped the game upside down. A throwing error by LSU with two outs wound up scoring a run for the Longhorns to make it 1-0. The next batter after that hit a three-run homer to left field.

So, you make one error and you blink once and you’re down to the No. 1 team in the country 4-0 in the top of the second. Life comes at you fast.

Once again, the Tiger bats stayed quiet until the later innings of the ballgame. For as powerful as this LSU lineup is, it is hard to hit off of what is probably the best pitching staff in the country, and I don’t think it’s close.

Texas scored again on some smart baserunning in the top of the seventh, as well as on a solo homer in the top of the eighth to make its lead 6-0. LSU had plenty of runners on base and plenty of chances to do damage. They just never could cash in.

The Tigers had bases loaded with zero outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and all they were able to come away with was one run. Errors and missed opportunities will doom you in any game, that issue is just compounded when you are facing the best team in the country.

Floyd (2-1) picked up his first loss of the season after the four-run outburst against him in the top of the second inning. LSU will look to rebound tomorrow night against the Baylor Bears with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
