On this day: Celtics Waters, Webb debut for Boston; Strickland born

On this day, Celtics Tremont Waters and Marcus Webb made their debut for Boston, and Erick Strickland was born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Boston Celtics two way point guard Tremont Waters made his debut for the team in a 103-102 squeaker of a win over the Sacramento Kings. The former Louisiana State University Tiger had been drafted by the Celtics with the 51st pick of the NBA draft that same year and had already begun to turn heads on his assignment in the G League with the Red Claws, Boston’s developmental affiliate based in Portland, Maine.

Waters scored a solid 7 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, and 2 blocks with 2 fouls and as many turnovers in just under 20 minutes of playing time.

And while the Connecticut native had trouble finding his shot — he went 2-of-7 from the floor overall, 1-of-5 from beyond the arc, and 2-of-2 from the stripe — he found other ways to contribute.

Ex-Celtics floor general Tremont Waters on playing abroad with Victor Wembanyama

The LSU product recently linked up with the host of NBC Sports Boston’s “Celtics Talk” podcast Chris Forsberg to talk about his time with the Celtics, his ties to other Boston alumni, and more.

Former Boston Celtics point guard Tremont Waters is playing overseas in the French Pro A league for the Metropolitans 92 alongside prized NBA draft prospect Victor Wembanyama. He secured the gig thanks to a kind word from fellow former Celtic Vincent Poirier and the Connecticut native’s skill as a floor general.

The onetime LSU player recently linked up with the host of NBC Sports Boston’s “Celtics Talk” podcast Chris Forsberg to talk about his time with the Celtics, his ties to other former Celtics, what life is like playing overseas with such a highly-regarded talent and more.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what Waters has been up to since leaving the Celtics as an unrestricted free agent to join the Milwaukee Bucks organization while we wait for training camp and preseason to arrive for Boston.

Boston alum Tremont Waters gets 16 points, 12 assists in Puerto Rico’s close loss to US

Water’s Puerto Rican National Team came up just shy of a win, falling 85-84.

While, technically, the United States of America and Puerto Rico are the same country, for the purposes of the FIBA AmeriCup tournament, they are counted as separate entities with their own national teams. On Thursday, former Boston Celtics floor general Tremont Waters shined for the Puerto Rico National Team, which pushed the U.S. to the brink in the Americans’ 85-84 victory.

Waters co-led Puerto Rico in scoring, producing 16 points, 3 rebounds, an eye-popping 12 assists and 2 steals in a performance that saw him commit 3 personal fouls and 3 turnovers in 31:24 minutes of floor time as a starter.

The Connecticut native shot 7-of-17 from the field, but just 1-of-9 from deep and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe in what must have been a frustrating near-miss for such a solid overall performance from Waters.

Against a team with current or former NBAers Norris Cole, Anthony Lamb, Frank Mason, Jodie Meeks, Gary Clark and Patrick McCaw, this was one of the former Celtics’ best outings in the AmeriCup to date.

Former Celtic Tremont Waters gets 6 points, 9 assists for Puerto Rico vs. Argentina in AmeriCup play

The former Boston two way point guard found ways to help his team when his shot wasn’t falling, but it wasn’t enough for the win.

It wasn’t the dominant performance of his previous game playing for the Puerto Rican National Team in the AmeriCup, but former Boston Celtics floor general Tremont Waters managed a solid contribution in his team’s 99-86 loss to a stacked Argentina National Team on Sunday evening. The onetime Louisiana State University player chipped in 6 points, 1 rebound, 9 assists and 2 steals, but shot just 2-of-6 from the floor overall, 1-of-4 from beyond the arc and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.

Waters committed 7 turnovers and 2 personal fouls in just under 25 minutes  on Sunday, which certainly did not help Puerto Rico’s cause.

Waters was taken at No. 51 in the 2019 NBA draft by Boston and played for the team until 2021 when he left in unrestricted free agency to join the Milwaukee Bucks.

Celtics 2019 draft pick Tremont Waters gets 20 points, 5 boards, 7 assists vs. Dominican Republic for Puerto Rico in AmeriCup play

Boston’s No. 51 pick of the 2019 draft has been shining for Puerto Rico in the AmeriCup.

Former Boston Celtics floor general Tremont Waters earned himself  ‘Player of the game’ honors for his outstanding play in the Puerto Rican National Team’s 88-82 win over the Dominican National Team in AmeriCup play on Saturday afternoon.

The Connecticut native put up an impressive 20 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals in 31:47 minutes of play against the Dominican Republic, turning the ball over 5 times and fouling 3 times. Waters had a great shooting night everywhere from the floor but 3-point range, going just 0-of-1 from deep, but 6-of-10 overall and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.

The LSU product was the Celtics’ 51st overall pick of the 2019 NBA draft and played for the team until leaving in free agency to join the Wisconsin Herd G League team, the developmental affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, as an unrestricted free agent in the 2021 offseason.

Celtics point guard alumnus Tremont Waters plays in Greater Hartford Pro-Am, hopes to inspire next generation

The former Celtics floor general said he is ‘trying to give back as much as I can when it comes to helping younger guys play.’

Former Boston Celtics floor general Tremont Waters made a trip back to his native Connecticut to play in Greater Hartford Pro-Am recently, and spoke with the Hartford Courant’s Joe Arruda about participating in an event he grew up watching. “It’s a dope thing to be able to come back and play,” offered Waters after he’d played.

“That’s very inspirational. I know there’s kids around that are coming to watch, and you never know who is going to grow to become the next player to be able to play in this,” offered the LSU product of an event he spent much time at with his father as a kid.

“That’s pretty inspirational for me,” emphasized Waters.

Former Celtics two way point guard Tremont Waters traded to Los Angeles Lakers G League team

Waters will now suit up for the South Bay Lakers when he isn’t being called up to play with the parent club.

There have not been too many players in the 75-year history of the NBA who have played for both the Boston Celtics and their longtime rival Los Angeles Lakers, but there might soon be one more to add to the short list of such players.

According to a press release put out by the Lakers’ G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, the developmental team of Los Angeles announced that it had acquired the services of former Celtics two way floor general Tremont Waters and a 2022 G League draft second-round pick in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks’ G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, for guard Frank Mason III and South Bay’s 2022 NBA G League first-round draft pick.

The LSU product has earned two 10-day contracts this season, one from the Toronto Raptors in late December, and another from the Washington Wizards, and could conceivably see floor time with the Lakers.

Ex-Boston Celtics two way point guard Tremont Waters signing 10-day hardship exception deal with Wizards

The former Celtics floor general will help Washington weather its COVID-19 crisis.

Boston Celtics alumnus and former two way point guard Tremont Waters has been signed by the Washington Wizards on a 10-day hardship exception according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

The former 51st overall pick of the 2019 NBA draft for Boston had most recently been playing for the Toronto Raptors in a similar role and deal, having signed with that team after too many players in the league’s health and safety protocols required the Raptors to sign a hardship exception player. Waters had previously been on the roster of the Wisconsin Herd — the Milwaukee Bucks G League affiliate — after leaving Boston this past offseason.

The Connecticut native might well yet find himself a longer-term deal in the NBA via a good showing with the Wiz. And with the pandemic showing little signs of abating, he may yet find himself on the move around the league to help fill in the gaps created by COVID-19.

Shams: Former Boston Celtics two way guard Tremont Waters signing with Toronto Raptors

The Connecticut native was playing with the Milwaukee Bucks’ G League affiliate.

Former Boston Celtics two way point guard Tremont Waters is among the more recent beneficiaries of the NBA’s decision to aggressively use 10-day hardship exemption contracts to fill roster spots of players unable to play after being sent to the league’s health and safety protocols with positive COVID-19 test results.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that the Toronto Raptors will sign the former Celtic to such a deal, having most recently been playing for the Wisconsin Herd, the G League affiliate for the Milwaukee Bucks. Drafted 51st overall by Boston in the 2019 NBA draft, the Connecticut native moved on from the Celtics after two seasons with the team in a two way role.

After signing on with the Herd, Waters averaged 17.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2.7 steals per game while shooting a solid 36.4% from deep and 42.1% from the field.

Explaining the NBA’s hardship exception and the free agents who signed as replacement players

Explaining what hardship exceptions and replacement players mean as COVID-19 protocols hit the NBA.

As the omicron variant of COVID-19 continues to spread, the NBA has required a large share of “replacement players” to fill in for the players who are in health and safety protocols. And so far, more than 100 players have reportedly entered the league’s health and safety protocols so far this month, per ESPN’s Baxter Holmes.

But how exactly do the “replacement players” work?

Essentially, the NBA’s hardship exception allows teams to exceed the 15-man roster limit if more than three players on the roster are each going to miss extended time due to illness or injury. Typically, teams weren’t allowed to apply for the hardship exception before Jan. 5.

But starting last season, the league changed the policy to allow earlier exceptions. And as of earlier this week, effective Dec. 19 until Jan. 19, the NBA is allowing teams to sign one replacement player for each player on their roster who tests positive for COVID-19.

While there are some big names (e.g. Isaiah Thomas, Lance Stephenson, CJ Miles) who have signed as replacement players, there are lots of promising young NBA hopefuls who are hoping to use this opportunity as a chance to stick around the league.

Not all of the players below were signed through hardship exceptions and some transactions (e.g. DeMarcus Cousins and Wesley Matthews to the Milwaukee Bucks) may have happened anyway during a normal season.

But below, based on the NBA’s transaction log and reporting from the league’s top insiders, you can find a live tracker of all the players who have signed new deals with NBA teams over the course of the past month.
