Bills star CB Tre’Davious White to miss Week 1 vs. Rams after landing on PUP list

Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White, one of the best corners in the league, will miss Week 1 against the Rams while on the PUP list

The Buffalo Bills will officially be without one of their best players in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams. The Bills placed star cornerback Tre’Davious White on the reserve/PUP list Tuesday, which means he will miss the first four games of the season – including the opener next Thursday.

White is working his way back from a knee injury, tearing his ACL in Week 12 last season. The Bills are playing it safe with their top cornerback, not risking rushing him back out of fear of suffering a setback.

White is a two-time Pro Bowler and was a first-team All-Pro in 2019 with the Bills. His absence will make life easier for Cooper Kupp, Allen Robinson and Van Jefferson, assuming Jefferson plays.

Bills’ Kaiir Elam, Christian Benford generate buzz in preseason vs. Colts

#Bills’ Kaiir Elam, Christian Benford generate buzz in preseason vs. #Colts:

The cornerback position has been one of the most talked about topics in Buffalo this past offseason, and two of the newest additions to that group made an impact in the team’s victory over Indianapolis on Saturday.

Rookie CBs Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford made their presence felt early, as each corner made a play during the first quarter to end a Colts offensive drive.

And head coach Sean McDermott took notice.

“It looked like both of them battled out there,” McDermott said while speaking to the press. “They didn’t shy away from the competition.”

Those moments weren’t lost on either player either.

“It was something I can cherish for the rest of my life, something that I’ll never take for granted,” Elam said, as the 1st round selection out of Florida addressed the media following the game. “(I’ll) probably remember this game when I’m 90 years old.”

A sixth-round pick out of Villanova, Benford echoed a similar sentiment.

“It’s, obviously, a life-changing experience,” Benford said. “We prayed for stuff like this every day. I prayed for it every day since I was a kid. And I thought about it, and I lined up against their ones, and it’s a joyful feeling. (There was) no fear. … (There was) no scariness. It was straight joy and happiness.”

Newly added QB Matt Ryan lined up under center across from them, taking extended preseason snaps with fellow Indy starters as he adjusts to a new team and system, giving the two young defensemen more gameplay against veteran talent.

“It didn’t really matter who lined up out there, I was just so excited to be out there,” Elam added. “Matt Ryan is, obviously, he’s a good quarterback. He’s had a heck of a career. But I was just so excited to be out there and really just cherish the moment and also make sure I did my part.”

Report: Bills plan to have Tre’Davious White back ‘sooner than later’

Report: #Bills plan to have Tre’Davious White back ‘sooner than later’

The Buffalo Bills have been mum on the Tre’Davious White front.

Not only is that the smart play because nobody should be rushed back from a serious ACL injury, but Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott doesn’t give away an inch to opponents–Even if the season isn’t here yet.

However, an insider report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler provided some optimism on the cornerback.

According to Fowler, White could return “sooner than later.” That’s a very positive update with the 2022 regular season about a month away.

Here’s Fowler’s full report:

I’m told the plan is for cornerback Tre’Davious White to return to practice “sooner than later.” There doesn’t seem to be much panic out of Buffalo’s camp about his ability to return to the lineup. The Bills will likely keep their eye on veteran corners but don’t feel the need to overcompensate yet. First-round rookie Kaiir Elam has battled well throughout camp while learning some new techniques. He was mostly a press-man corner at Florida, and the Bills have worked with him on his off-coverage, which takes time to learn. He has been eager to take that challenge and apply it.

Fowler’s update is promising, but it should still be taken with a grain of salt. It’s worth noting that the report did not provide any sort of timeline.

There’s no reason for the team to rush White back into the fold. The Bills still could sit him for the first game or two of the regular season. Heck, even the first month and that would still be a very quick turnaround time from an ACL injury.

Buffalo can still certainly be happy about the update, regardless.

Top 101 LSU football players of all time: No. 70-61

The top 101 countdown continues with a few wide receivers and some of DBU’s best

LSU football has been around for a long time. Since 1893, to be exact.

In that span, plenty of great football players have come through the program. Before we begin the journey of the 2022 season, I thought I’d take a stab at ranking the 101 best players in LSU history.

I have tried to avoid recency bias as much as possible. It can be hard to get enough information about older players, but I did my best to get them about in the ballpark of where they should be.

Anytime there’s a list this big, people will disagree. There’s so little that separates the 50th player from the 70th, and so on.

I tried to balance consistency over multiple seasons with some players that had one great year. Both have been rewarded here. With that in mind, let’s continue the countdown.

Tre’Davious White got his coaching on during Bills training camp (video)

Coach Tre:

Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White is still nursing his knee injury from last season as his teammates get things going at 2022 training camp.

That doesn’t mean White hasn’t been hands on.

During training camp workouts this week, White was spotted putting his coaching hat on. At one point, White was helping out a couple of younger teammates in rookies Christian Benford and Ja’Marcus Ingram, in addition to Siran Neal.

Check out the clip of White’s coaching below via WIVB-TV:

Bills 2022 training camp positional battles: Cornerback

#Bills 2022 training camp positional battles: Cornerback (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills cornerback position has always been an interesting area to examine on the rosters since head coach Sean McDermott arrived on the scene.

Tre’Davious White has been a near constant on the field, outside of injuries that have sidelined him. The player opposite White has changed quite a bit.

There were some veteran experiments (Josh Norman, Vontae Davis, EJ Gaines, Phillip Gaines) and developing players (Levi Wallace, Cam Lewis, Dane Jackson) working their way onto the field. Ultimately, Wallace had the most consistent and most positive impact on the field.

Now, Wallace is a Pittsburgh Steeler, leaving via free agency this March.

An additional wrinkle with this position is White’s health. The All-Pro is returning from an ACL tear, and his status is somewhat uncertain entering the season.

As training camp nears, one of the areas to watch is how the staff utilizes their cornerbacks. It may be a battle for players to position themselves in case White misses any time. Or, if somehow Kaiir Elam nears more time to acclimate to the NFL, a reserve will need to step in immediately.

How the roster shakes out behind White and Elam will be the big battle this summer for the cornerbacks.

Jackson epitomized the “next man up” mentality on the roster, starting six games after White’s injury next year.  He ended last year with 41 tackles and six passes defensed. Lewis has been a solid depth piece in the secondary.

They will be challenged by sixth-round pick Christian Benford.  At the very least, a strong camp will slot Benford ahead of players returning from the practice squad. The Villanova product has good size to challenge for an immediate reserve spot on the roster.

Nick McCloud, Olaijah Griffin, and Tim Harris have spent time on Buffalo’s practice squad last year. A strong camp will at the very least put one of these players in the running for a final roster spot in Buffalo. It could also pique the interest of other teams if they do not find a place with the Bills.

On paper, the group seems fairly straightforward. However, circumstances will make this unit any interesting one to keep an eye on this training camp.

10 takeaways from Brandon Beane at the start of Bills training camp

10 takeaways from Brandon Beane at the start of #Bills training camp:

The Buffalo Bills began their 2022 training camp adventure on Sunday. Prior to that first workout, general manager Brandon Beane gave one of his handful of press conferences he delivers throughout the year.

Considering Beane’s discussions are less frequent than most with the team, it’s always important to take what we can from his pressers.

With that, here are 10 takeaways from Beane at Bills training camp:

Tre’Davious White, two others start Bills training camp on PUP list

Tre’Davious White, two others start #Bills training camp on PUP list:

The Buffalo Bills placed three players on the physically unable to preform list (PUP) at the start of the team’s training camp on Sunday.

Of those, two are unsurprising.

The trio placed on that designation by the team are:

  • CB Tre’Davious White
  • OL Ike Boettger
  • DT Eli Ankou

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott announced the transactions via video conference. White and Boettger being mentioned are the two that were expected.

White is still returning from an ACL injury he suffered last season. McDermott, as he did all offseason, only said White is “on schedule” to return from his rehab.

According to various reports from the first day of camp practice, White was in attendance on the sideline watching the session.

Like the defender, Bottger suffered a long-term injury during the 2021 season. He tore his Achilles.

Last year, Boettger started in 10 games for the Bills. Included in that was nine-straight outings before injury struck. Ryan Bates went on to fill in for Boettger and the Bills liked Bates’ efforts as they re-signed him during free agency.

McDermott did not elaborate on Ankou, who had previously taken part in the team’s spring practice earlier this offseason. He is a rotational piece along Buffalo’s defensive front.

The NFL’s top 12 outside cornerbacks

Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield continues our position lists with the NFL’s 12 best outside cornerbacks.

There are countless things to do in sports that are difficult.

Hitting a baseball is certainly one of them, as I have been reminding my players all summer long.

Another? Playing cornerback in the NFL. You have some of the world’s best athletes sprinting towards you, trying to juke you out of your cleats. And you are expected to match them stride-for-stride? Sure. And heaven forbid you many any sort of contact with them, otherwise you’ll see more yellow than Heinz Field during a Pittsburgh Steelers game.

Despite the odds, there are some incredible cornerbacks in the game today. Here is a look at the best outside cornerbacks in the NFL today, and our other position lists to date.

According to ESPN, Tre’Davious White’s NFL peers do not think he’s a top-10 cornerback in the league.

Surveying more than 50 league executives, coaches, scouts and players, the former world-wide leader helped us name the 10 best at each spot on the field according to those in the game. The Buffalo Bills’ lockdown defender is not found.

Per the rankings, White is only a honorable mention as a currently.

ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler was the analyst who put together the list. In his breakdown of White, he acknowledges that the Bills corner should be in the top-10.

The reasoning White is not found is pretty obvious.

White’s knee injury which he’s attempting to return from in 2022 holds him back. A former first-team All-Pro, White is going to have to prove he’s still at that level.

Here’s Fowler’s breakdown on White:

Tre’Davious White, Buffalo Bills: A top-five fixture in the past, White still deserves to be in the top 10 but didn’t garner enough top-five votes to surpass the younger corners. Suffering an ACL tear in his left knee in late November didn’t help. “Body of work, he’s still elite,” an AFC defensive coach said. “He’s got that toughness and technique where you know what you’re getting every play. He’ll just have to work his way back into form.”
