Top 101 LSU football players of all time: Honorable mentions

Before we reveal the top 10, here are some guys that just missed the cut.

Before we arrive at the final installment of our top 101 LSU football player rankings, I wanted to take some time to look at honorable mentions.

All of these names made my first cut of the list and have strong arguments to be included. Anytime a long list is being composed, it’s tough to find separation after looking at the best of the best.

The only spot on the whole list I didn’t have to think twice about was No. 1, and it’s possible I eventually lend some second thought to that, too. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the guys who just barely missed the cut.

Top 101 LSU football players of all time: What current players could make the list?

Before we finish the countdown, what current LSU players could be joining the list in the future.

In the summer, I began counting down the top 101 players in the history of LSU Football.

We now have just 10 players to go

But before the final 10 is revealed, it’s worth taking a look at who could join the list in the future. It can be a fool’s game to predict who is going to be an all-time great and who isn’t.

There’s only 101 spots on that list. Just by math alone, when looking at if a player will join the list or not, the smart bet is always no. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun with it.

There’s plenty of talent on LSU’s roster and the expectations will be high entering 2023. All it takes is one great year paired with team success to become a program great. Here are some current players who have a chance to become some of the best to ever do it at LSU.

The countdown heats up with the best receivers in LSU history.

The countdown is heating up.

With 70% of the list in the rearview mirror, we’re starting to look at not just the best in LSU history, but some of the best the SEC and country as a whole have seen.

Today’s list is full of offensive playmakers, but before we get started, here’s a reminder of the criteria used when putting the list together.

  • I’ve tried my best to avoid recency bias.
  • Emphasis was placed on players who received all-American honors and other accolades. Leaders of championship teams received a boost as well.
  • I gave coach and eyewitness quotes about players significant emphasis.
  • Players who made significant contributions over multiple years were given priority over single-season stars. Production mattered more than talent.

Without further adieu, we begin with one of the most talented players to ever put on an LSU helmet and a current NFL superstar.

The countdown resumes, kicking off with Jamal Adams.

Over the summer, I began a countdown of the top 101 players in the history of LSU football. The season began and it got lost in the shuffle, but now that LSU’s on a bye, there’s some time to pick it back up.

Today, we’re looking at No. 40-31 on the list. It features a couple of hard-hitting safeties, a few offensive linemen, as well as some of the best receivers LSU’s had to offer.

With that in mind, let’s continue the list. But first, just some reminders on the criteria used to construct the all-time list.

  • I’ve tried my best to avoid recency bias
  • Emphasis was placed on players who received accolades such as All-American
  •  Players who made contributions over multiple seasons were given slight edges over players who had one elite year

LSU football has been around for a long time. Since 1893, to be exact.

In that span, plenty of great football players have come through the program. Before we begin the journey of the 2022 season, I thought I’d take a stab at ranking the 101 best players in LSU history.

I have tried to avoid recency bias as much as possible. It can be hard to get enough information about older players, but I did my best to get them about in the ballpark of where they should be.

Anytime there’s a list this big, people will disagree. There’s so little that separates the 50th player from the 70th, and so on.

I tried to balance consistency over multiple seasons with some players that had one great year. Both have been rewarded here. With that in mind, let’s continue the countdown.
