2021 NBA Mock Draft 6.0: Predicting all 60 picks after the combine

While most of the basketball world is focused on the NBA Finals, scouts and draftniks are in the midst of a very busy time of year as well.

While most of the basketball world is focused on the NBA Finals, scouts and draftniks are in the midst of a very busy time of year as well.

The most crucial dates leading up to the draft are the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, the early entry application deadline, the lottery, the combine and the early entry withdrawal deadline. All have since come and gone, which means that we’re somehow already in the home stretch before the big night in Brooklyn on July 29.

Prospects are still frantically traveling around the country, visiting with teams for both individual and group workouts in front of key decision-makers. Still, others are currently playing for their national team on the FIBA circuit.

But as far as the public is concerned, the only new information that will be released between now and the draft will be filtered through whatever is reported by journalists. As such, until intel starts rolling in, this mock draft offers the most informed projections yet.

While these predictions are based on my conversations with NBA scouts and executives around the league, as well as my own scouting and information-gathering, they’re subject to change dramatically over the course of the next few weeks.

Tre Mann joins up-and-coming team in this latest USA TODAY Sports NBA mock draft

In the latest USA TODAY Sports mock draft, Mann joins a team that ended a long playoff drought this season.

The 2021 NBA draft is just three weeks away, and that means Florida’s drought of professional basketball draft picks that dates back to 2013 is about to end. It’s possible UF could have two players selected if Scottie Lewis were to sneak into the second round, but there’s one guy whose selection is all but guaranteed.

Former Gators point guard Tre Mann had a breakout season in 2020-21. After failing to establish much of a role at all on the team as a true freshman despite his five-star billing, Mann was improved in just about every area as a sophomore, boosting his scoring average from 5.3 points to a team-high 16.

Though most projections show Mann outside the lottery, he’s expected to be a first-round pick. In the latest mock draft from USA TODAY Sports, he remains a first-round prospect, joining a team that made the playoffs this season for the first time since 2013 in the New York Knicks with the 21st overall pick.

Mann is the type of point guard who can play on and off the ball, which could be a nice fit in New York. He shot 40% from beyond the arc at Florida and is used to a physical style.

The Knicks relied on a core led by forwards Julius Randle and R.J. Barrett, which got them to the postseason but led to their elimination in five games against eventual Eastern Conference runner-up Atlanta. In the backcourt, the team put a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of aging veteran Derrick Rose.

Rose continues to play at a relatively high level, but it could make sense for New York to pursue a future option at guard. Given his scoring prowess and variability (his size allows him to play as a combo guard), Mann would be a solid pickup here for the Knicks.

Mann will hope to hear his name called sooner rather than later at the NBA draft, which will take place on July 29.

Here’s the latest NBA team auditioning Tre Mann for his talents

Mann is coming off a stellar sophomore season in which he more than tripled his scoring average to 16 points per game

Former Florida point guard Tre Mann headlined a group of prospects that worked out for the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday in the team’s first pre-draft workout. Also among the players working out for the Pacers were Alabama’s Joshua Primo and Auburn’s J.T. Thor.

Mann is coming off a stellar sophomore season in which he more than tripled his scoring average to 16 points per game, almost single-handedly leading the Gators through their brief postseason run. He’s expected to be a first-round pick in the 2021 NBA draft, with some mock drafts even projecting him as a lottery pick. However, most have him falling toward the latter half of the round.

[exco_embed id=”e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

The Pacers aren’t the first team Mann has worked directly with. He also worked out with the Houston Rockets last week, and he met with the Philadelphia 76ers, as well. Mann said that he would be a good fit with Houston, and he told NBA.com that he sees himself in the mold of other young guards that have found success recently like Trae Young.

“That’s the modern-day guard in the NBA right now, guys that can create for themselves, shoot off the dribble with range,” Mann said. “I feel like I do that the best in this draft class right now. I think that’s going to separate me a lot.

“Guys like that where I feel like they’re crafty, they create their own shots, and (they have) the same type of game that I have. I feel like I’m a wiggle player, get to my spots and can beat a guy off the dribble whether I’m shooting for deep or getting to the rim.”

The Pacers have three picks in the 2021 draft: No. 13, No. 54 and No. 60. Mann will almost certainly be off the board by the team’s two picks at the end of the second round, so if Indiana wants to land him, it will have to do so with the 13th pick.

Mann has been mocked as high as 10th overall, but more common projections include New York or Atlanta (which would pair him with Young) at picks 19-21. The Pacers already have a very solid scoring duo in the backcourt between Malcolm Brogdon and Caris LeVert, who each averaged over 20 points last season, but adding Mann would provide another scoring dimension for a team that missed the playoffs by falling to Washington in the play-in.

Tre Mann likes to study crafty players like Stephen Curry, Trae Young

The Gators guard likes to learn from some of the best players in the game to prepare for the transition to the next level.

When it comes to preparing for the transition to the NBA, former Florida Gators guard Tre Mann likes to study some of the best players in the game and learn their moves on the court.

Based on his level of play, it is easy to see those moves come to life.

Mann was named to the All-SEC first team after averaging 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals in 24 games with the Gators. He turned in a strong run in the SEC and NCAA tournaments, and has helped improve his draft stock considerably as of late.

The 6-foot-4 product on Wednesday was one of six prospects to work out with the Indiana Pacers. Afterward, Mann named some of the players he watches in an interview with Wheat Hotchkiss of Pacers.com.

I watch Trae Young, Damian Lillard, Stephen Curry, Bradley Beal, Devin Booker and CJ McCollum, guys like that who are crafty and can create their own shots; the same type of game I have. I feel like I’m a wiggle player, can get to my spots and beat a guy off the dribble whether I’m shooting from deep or getting to the rim. I feel like I do pretty well.

Mann believes he is the best player in the draft when it comes to shooting, either off the catch or dribble. He shot 40.2% from 3-point range last season and certainly has the credentials to become a knockdown shooter at the next level.

With more workouts on the horizon, Mann can continue to improve his draft stock. He is currently projected to be selected in the 20s as his skill set projects to translate well in the NBA.

He certainly watches the right players to be able to eventually reach that level…

Tre Mann, JT Thor among prospects to work out with Pacers

Florida guard Tre Mann and Auburn forward JT Thor are among the prospects set to work out with the Pacers on Wednesday.

Florida guard Tre Mann and Auburn forward JT Thor are among the prospects set to work out with the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday, the team announced.

Mann was named to the All-SEC first team after averaging 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals in 24 games with the Gators. He has been most commonly projected to be a mid-to-late first-round pick and has been one of the biggest risers in most mock drafts as of late.

Thor averaged 9.4 points, five rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots in 27 games played last season with the Tigers. He finished the season as one of five freshmen in the country to register at least 250 points, 100 rebounds and 30 blocks.

In addition to Mann and Thor, the Pacers will also be bringing in Eugene Omoruyi, Joshua Primo, DJ Steward and Marcus Zegarowski during the workout.

The Pacers will enter the draft with the 13th overall pick following the lottery last week. They also have the 54th and 60th picks in the draft and will begin to ramp up draft preparations now that the lottery and combine have concluded.

The NBA draft is scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 29.

Tre Mann reschedules pro day at NBA combine after illness

Tre Mann was out of action for the combine’s Pro Day on Saturday with an illness, and he’s rescheduled for Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Former Florida point guard Tre Mann is expected to be a first-round pick in next month’s NBA draft, and after landing an invite to the NBA combine, he has the opportunity to boost his stock even further. However, it seems he’ll have to wait, as Mann missed the first Pro Day of the combine on Saturday with an undisclosed illness, according to ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony.

Givony reported on Sunday that Mann had rescheduled for that afternoon at 1:30 p.m EDT, seemingly indicating that whatever held him out on Saturday wasn’t anything severe.

Mann departed for the draft after an excellent sophomore year where he became the Gators’ leading scorer and one of the top offensive players in the SEC. He put on impressive performances on a national stage in the NCAA Tournament, scoring 14 points and 19 points in UF’s two games.

[exco_embed id=“e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

That has fueled a draft projection that usually falls in the early 20s, but some mock drafts have had him in the lottery, as high as the top 10.

Those projections are clear outliers, but the combine is an excellent chance for him to make them more commonplace. With the event set to end on Sunday, Mann will hope he’s at 100% for his rescheduled Pro Day.

Tre Mann thinks he could be a good fit with the Rockets

Tre Mann thinks he’d gel with the Rockets if the team were to use one of its three first-round picks on him.

[mm-video type=video id=01f92mf82rhzb5je37zs playlist_id=01eqbz250mdknqvm5z player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f92mf82rhzb5je37zs/01f92mf82rhzb5je37zs-d934d9c12925dd39248a8835a8022bee.jpg]

It would be a dream scenario for former Florida star Tre Mann to learn from one of the best point guards in the NBA in John Wall. With the NBA combine this week, Mann has a chance to improve his draft stock and prove why he’s a good fit with an organization.

The Houston Rockets were the first team to work out Mann. He said that he believes he would be a good fit with the team.

The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie wrote that the former Gators standout is a “pull-up shooting savant with terrific playmaking ability.” After his workout with Houston, The Athletic’s Kelly Iko spoke with Mann.

[exco_embed id=“e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

“The workout went pretty good, it was my first one,” he said, according to The Athletic. “I was able to compete, show the team what I’m good at up close, which is creating shots for myself and my teammates. I did pretty good on three-on-three and one-on-one, so I feel it went well. Got a good feeling for it, a great way to get one under my belt and get used to it, and it was fun.”

Most prospects slated to go in the first 20 picks of the NBA draft elect not to take the court at the combine. Mann didn’t take part in five-on-five or complete athletic testing in Chicago.

“I think I could fit in Houston,” Mann said. “They’re not too deep at the point guard spot, so I could come in and contribute to the team and help out right away. We’ll see how that goes as far as the draft, but I’m sure that’s a good fit for me.”

Houston holds the No. 23 and 24 picks in this year’s NBA draft along with the No. 2 pick. The Rockets could target Mann with their second or third pick in the first round. Most NBA mock drafts have him selected near the end of the opening round.

The Athletic’s senior NBA columnist and former Memphis Grizzlies vice president of basketball operations John Hollinger wrote that Mann measured small for a shooting guard. He added that some teams have concerns about Mann’s athletic testing numbers, too.

Regardless of size or testing numbers, it would be surprising to see Mann slip out of the first round based on his shot-making ability.

2021 NBA draft prospects who have interviewed or worked out with Rockets

This list, which is being continuously updated, includes all reports to date of 2021 NBA draft prospects who have been linked to Houston.

With three selections in the first round at No. 2, No. 23, and No. 24, the Rockets are likely to be one of the most active NBA teams in preparation for the July 29 draft. It’s an opportunity for Houston general manager Rafael Stone to rapidly improve the depth and talent of a roster that finished with the league’s worst record in the 2020-21 season.

As part of that search, Stone and the Rockets are casting a wide net on potential candidates to join the team. Based on various interviews, social media posts, and media reports, here’s a look at who has interviewed or worked out with Houston during the 2021 pre-draft process.

Tre Mann confirms workout with Rockets, believes he would fit well

Mann said he did well in 3-on-3 and 1-on-1 drills and could see himself fitting in on Houston’s roster, per Kelly Iko of The Athletic.

In confirmation of apparent news from his Instagram page, University of Florida product Tre Mann said he recently worked out with the Houston Rockets as part of his preparations for the 2021 NBA draft.

Per Kelly Iko of The Athletic, Mann said at Thursday’s NBA draft combine in Chicago that his recent meeting and workout with the Rockets was his first with any team. The 6-foot-4 guard said he enjoyed the process and believes he performed well in 3-on-3 and 1-on-1 drills, and Mann thinks he would fit well on Houston’s roster, according to Iko.

During his sophomore season with the Gators in 2020-21, Mann averaged 16.0 points (45.9% FG, 40.2% on 3-pointers), 5.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 32.4 minutes per game. Here’s how For The Win draft expert Bryan Kalbrosky described Mann’s talent in his recent mock draft:

Florida’s Tre Mann was simply elite as a shot creator who displayed drastic year-over-year improvements as a shooter and as a playmaker.

He has the dribbling and the pull-up jumper necessary to break down his defenders and he has good positional size, literally growing two inches and adding 15 pounds between his freshman and sophomore year.

Kalbrosky projects Mann to be taken at No. 20 overall, which is in range of the final two first-round picks owned by the Rockets — No. 23 (from Portland) and No. 24 (from Milwaukee). Because Houston owns multiple picks, it’s also conceivable that they could package those to move up in the draft order and select someone such as Mann, should they not believe that he would be on the board at their current slots.

Now 20 years old, Mann played two college seasons at Florida. See below for a scouting analysis video based on Mann’s play with the Gators.

NBA Mock Draft 5.0: All 60 picks updated after the 2021 lottery

Learn who we think will get selected with each of the 60 picks in the 2021 NBA draft.

The 2021 NBA draft order is set and the Detroit Pistons have won the lottery, taking home the No. 1 overall pick on Tuesday evening.

Of course, these projections are subject to change even over the next few days, as the NBA’s combine is currently underway in Chicago. Prospects are often able to separate themselves and improve their draft stock if they stand out during five-on-five scrimmages that will take place later this week.

Note that there are several players who are currently “testing the waters” (e.g. Texas Tech’s Terrence Shannon Jr., UCLA’s Johnny Juzang, St. John’s Julian Champagnie and Oral Roberts’ Max Abmas, etc.) that were omitted from this mock. Such players will have until midnight on July 8 to decide if they wish to return to the NCAA and improve their draft stock or remain in this class.

Unfortunately, collegiate national champion Jared Butler was omitted from our mock after news broke earlier today that he is “not permitted to play or practice” in the NBA, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania, unless his heart condition is deemed as cleared.

We will continue to release more mock drafts as we gather more intel, but until then, here is how we project the draft to shake out on July 29.
